In no real order...

a. I'm tired of talk from the Texas program. As soon as I heard that this team had a players only meeting after the very first game of the season, I just rolled my eyes. This is exactly the kind of stuff that's happened in the last few seasons and nothing has ever emerged from any of it... just more losing. This is a very un-media like thing to say, but if I don't have to hear from Tom Herman or his assistants or the players until something actually changes on the field, I'm completely ok with. Just go away and come back when you're ready.

b.This team lacks real player leadership. You can't be a great leader unless you can be a guy that delivers on Saturdays, but the guys that want to be leaders on this team and in this program aren't great players. How do you follow anyone when they likely warrant being on the bench? It speaks to the disease of losing that exists in this program. I have no idea how you solve this issue if you're Tom Herman, but all of the competitive games Herman has engaged this team in over the last nine months proved to be meaningless when the first game kicked off.

c. I fully expect Sam Ehlinger to start on Saturday, unless Shane Buechele practices on Thursday, which we're waiting to hear about. I have no idea what to expect at this point, especially with the play surrounding him on the offense. Will an actual running back step up? Will his left tackle not give up important pressures in key moments? Is he going to be asked to throw the ball to the tight end?

One thing I do expect to see is more of Jerrod Heard and the Wildcat formation. When this team needs its run game, it might need to lean on gimmicks to a degree.

d. I think San Jose State is going to be a competitive game. Learning how to actually play well is step one this weekend. Baby steps.

e. If this coaching staff is as good as we all thought it was a week ago, then we're going to see a different team on Saturday. The best coaching these guys will do in their lives needs to be taking place right now leading into the USC game in nine days.

f. Saturday couldn't have helped with Houston Lamar defensive back Anthony Cook. All of my experience in this business tells me that Texas likely took a step back in his recruitment in the battle against Ohio State.

g. The weather today in Austin is awesome. Let's all skip work tomorrow and go to Zilker or something.
