Thoughts on the spring game

It was nice to see Texas football one last time before fall. Here are my thoughts.

1. I'm okay with a two-headed monster at QB to start the season, but I fully expected to see Shane Buechele the man by the time conference play starts. 22-41 299 yards and 2 TDS. doesn't lie.

2. Our running game is going to dominate

3. The no huddle looks legit and I think it's going to ware down teams like Notre Dame who have to deal with both the heat and the tempo.

4. hard to judge the receivers based on the rain that was falling, but I feel like we have 2 game breakers in Burt and Collin Johnson.

5. We are thin on the dline right now, we are going to really need quality contribution from some freshmen. I have no problem saying our defense is better and should be one of the best in conference this year.

6. Our pass defense is going to be really really tough, our QBs had a good day, but our DBS were usually there.

7. punting sucks for the most part.

I realize it's just one performance and not a true game, but if there is anyone out there that still thinks Swoopes should lead this team, I can't help them. What more do you need to see? He was 4/16 for 70 yards with two interceptions. In other words, nothing has changed. The offense does not move with him as the starter.
Buchele got a slow start, but he didn't make any terrible decisions, and his throws for the most part were accurate, a few of them could t have been thrown any better.

Keep putting on weight, Shane. Maybe the football gods will be kind to us for once and let you make it through the season without injury.

This is the #1 reason I want to see Swoops continue to split time with Shane. One good hit and we lost him. Swoops can take the punishment and deliver a little on his own. Don't read too much into either interception swoops threw both were picks that were mostly on the receiver. He also had a couple throws that were right on the money and the receiver just dropped. I won't say he is a better passer than Shane, because he isn't but we need him to take some snaps because Shane is not physically ready to finish a whole season on his own.

To be fair, one of those INTs was not an interception, and was a well placed ball the WR should've caught anyway.

The other was not a bad pass, just a great play by Holton Hill leading to the INT.

That said, yeah Swoopes can't be the guy.

Did you all see Locksley's deleted tweets? Evidently very pissed he got zero snaps. Probably would have in the second half. nb4HeGone

I also have to say about Swoopes, man, what a great kid. So self aware, a team player, and a class act. He never expected to be the starter at Texas, and is just thrilled to contribute in any way. So supportive of his teammates, even to the guy that most likely will take his job. Yeah he has issues as a QB, but his attitude is exemplary. He'll be a winner in life because of it, and I'm proud he's part of the program. I'm of course one of his biggest critics at QB, but I just feel like he needs credit where credit is due.

Would love for them to find a way to get Buechele and Swoopes on the field together. Run 2 tight end sets with Swoopes as the 2nd TE or H-Back and then from time to time shift Buechele out wide and run the 18 wheeler package up tempo.

My dream of the lights coming on for Swoopes in this simplified reads offense seem pretty slim at this point. Swoopes never seemed able to recover mentally from the WRs' drops.

I talked to a Texas fan who was from his hometown and stated he was a great kid and wonderful family but was upset that he has had 3 different OC's at Texas and it has not helped his progress.

feel bad for Locksley, he has had a rough go but the truth is, he isn't a QB and the sooner he accepts it, the better the chance he has of making an impact and possibly making it to the next level.

Excuse me gentlemen, I'm stuck in baton rouge on a freaking golf course and obviously devoid of the Longhorn Network. Can someone please give me some break down instead of just commentary? What did we do offensively? Offensive formations? Sets? Routes? I've read that we still can't throw a damn out route..... anything else?

Clob to drunk to go into detail right now. But offensively we looked the best we've looked in 5 years or so. Started off slow with lost of penalties, no surprise, but once they got rolling they were firing on all cylinders. Threw a lot of go balls, didn't matter to who. Threw them out wide, in the slot, and to the TE. And surprising we connected on the majority of them. More plays of 20+ yards than I'd seen in a long time.

RBs looked great!

Secondary looked good, has depth. D line surprisingly had a decent pass rush. After the first unit though it's not pretty. Need more depth along the DL.

Seemed like we always had a TE in the formation. Either on the line or in the backfield as an H back. Mainly ran 11 personel

Thanks coach. Sober up. I'm flying back to NB tomorrow and I'll catch the game on my dvr. Just curious as to the minutiae of the game.

BTW, after 10 lbs of crawfish and too many beers to count, you wish you were as drunk as I am. ;)

It hasn't helped his progress, but it's not the reason he's a poor QB. He's just not good QB material. Having had multiple OCs has nothing to do with the fact that he still cannot make even the easiest throws with any consistency. He was a bad QB with bad coaches in high school, and he came to Texas completely undeveloped. He never should have been recruited as a QB in the first place, but Mack preferred the shortcut of listening to dumbass Bobby Burton instead of doing his f***ing job.

Regardless, Swoopes seems like a fine young man. He does well in the classroom, he's the consummate teammate, and, like Metcalf said, he handles his grievances and frustrations like a proper adult. I wish him the best, but I hope to never again see him with the ball in his hands in a non-18-wheeler or non-garbage-time situation.

What sucks is he has all the tools.....except......between the ears. Maybe he tries too hard. But I don't think he is the every down guy either BRB.

Your posted comments on shane need to be reviewed since he passed for 299 yards and looked good for a high school senior and he will grow and that is in one half since they called the game at half because of the rain..Swoopes passed for 70 yards but some ends dropped passes. Its hard to read to much into a spring game as If I remember Garrett GiLbert had a good spring game and we all know how that worked out.

Man, can't we have one day to feel optimistic lol! I thought Swoopes was the same Swoopes and Buechele clearly throws the best ball and actually looked like a QB. He didn't look that small to me and I think all the reports were just the media focusing on the only bad thing they can find. Not many blitzes were called so we don't know what he will do when someone really comes at him but he did show some elusiveness. The RBs are our strength without a question. The secondary made plays and Elliot "The Sheriff" is going to kill someone one day. Everything else was pretty vanilla and nothing spectacular. We have an offensive identity and more talent than we have had in a while. I feel good about what I saw.

strange thing about spring game stats....299?...I read that he passed for 189 yds. At any rate, I dont think we saw half of the offense that will be or even HAS been installed. Every deep ball was to one sideline or the other ....and only one that I remember to 85. It was a showcase for the offense no doubt, but I saw lots I liked about the defense......Swoopes always looks indecisive to me, even of handoffs. Maybe because he is so big he looks like slow motion, I dont know....He did throw some nice balls that were dropped, and neither int would I blame on him. On the other hand, Shane threw several out passes that should have/could have been pick 6. Still I loved the generalship Shane showed every time out there....No screens or "get out of jail" tosses to the TE.

Special teams....NOOOOOOOOO!

Does anyone know when the game is going to be re-shown? I'm looking forward to breaking it down a bit to really see what all the positions did.

Swoopes had a couple of passes dropped, one bounced off Burt's face...here is the thing: so what? What you needed to see is a different QB. A guy who makes quick decisions and accurate throws. But what you saw instead was the same Swoopes of the last two years. He has always been able to deliver one or two deep passes in a game. The problem is everything else.
Buchele also delivered a couple of great deep balls, one actually hit the reciever in stride! Remember what that looks like Texas fans? It's only been five years since we had a QB who could do it. But that's not where his game ends. He can throw short and intermediate routes too. Oh and I'd say there were at least another five of his passes that were dropped or caught by a guy who didn't keep his feet in bounds.
By the way, for those that didn't watch the presser, Strong flat out said that if Buchele wins the job, Swoopes will still have a roll in the office. I'm guessing they intend to keep the 18 wheeler. Why not? No one could stop it last year.
I know that there are people that just don't want to close the door on the Swoopes chapter, but if you saw something different from Swoopes than we've seen all along, we must have watched different games.

I don't disagree with a word you said, but here is the thing. If I were a defensive player and I saw Texas walk out a true freshmen QB, my first thought is I'm going to try and break him in half every chance I get, don't care if I get called for a penalty. This is what every defensive player is going to think when we face them.

We need Swoops to be ready, but also we need him to take some of the pressure off of Buechele and give him time to get used to the college game. We also need Heard to pull his head out and show the same dedication that Swoops and Buechele have shown. I still think he is the most talented guy we have on campus as far as pure athleticism goes.

He through 41 passes ... in one half? Was it a normal game timed, 30 minute half?

So did Naashon Hughes and PJ Locke III show anything yesterday? Remember that hit PJ put on the Baylor qb? Caused a fumble and knocked him out of the game. How do figure in on the defense this year?
