An Apple A Day Keeps Thankfulness Away

I recently had another health scare; this time it was my eyes. I started seeing flashes of lights/floating diamond shaped figures that glow around the edges. I hurried over to the Retina Associates of Austin to check out what was going on. It turned out to be a possible blood vessel leak, but nothing that won’t resolve on its own apparently. At my age, one must be vigilant about these episodes to avoid possible retinal detachment.

Almost needless to say, I was very thankful it wasn’t serious. This is just one of probably hundreds of things I can be thankful for. Every day I try my best to thank my Creator for His blessings, even when things are not going well.

Our Creator loves it when we are thankful, no matter the circumstances. But from our very first days, we weren’t thankful. Adam and Eve were living in paradise on earth, they could eat anything they wanted in the Garden of Eden except for one forbidden fruit/apple. Instead of being thankful for all they could have, they focused on the ONE THING they couldn’t have and were then cast out of paradise for their un-thankfulness.

It seems easy for us to forget all the blessings we have and instead focus on what we don’t have. To make matters worse, we may blame God for what we think we lack, instead of what or who is really the culprit. Sure, God allows bad things to happen to “good” people, but the reality is we all are not “good”, we need to keep ourselves accountable for our self-centeredness. We are born this way. I have two granddaughters that will be 2 years old, and it is hilarious and eye-opening to see that even shortly after birth, how babies/toddlers learn very fast how to say NO or resist sharing a toy or obey a parent.

Before you reach for the forbidden fruit, take an inventory of what else is in your garden, and be thankful my friends!
