Where’s Your Citizenship?
I recently updated my passport which was expiring this summer. I haven’t traveled much except for work until I retired. Next year my wife and I want to travel back to Europe. When we went to Portugal last year it was a lot of fun, but exhausting. After the 9th day, I was ready to go home to the US.
I’ve been on earth now almost 63 years and at times, like my trip to Portugal, I grow weary and tired. There are days I’m reminded that this is not “home”, my real home, my citizenship, my country is in HEAVEN.
Within the Christian faith, there are many hints of what Heaven will be like. Many of us don’t think about it much unless someone we love dies, then our attention to what the afterlife might encompass comes to mind.
Others think about it when they are going through hard times, health issues, financial problems, etc. The Bible provides many comforting passages about how this life is temporary compared to eternity. No matter how bad things can get here on earth, we are promised a perfect home designed just for us on the other side of this life if we have faith in Jesus.
Not only are we assured of a home prepared exactly for us, but we are also promised rewards for those who persevere in the tough times. This life is a marathon and if you have ever run a marathon, you know how painful that long race can be, but crossing the finish line is an amazing feeling.
Let the verses below and others you can find help us live faithfully, knowing that our ultimate destination is with God in heaven. May we find comfort and strength in His promises as we journey through life, seeking to follow Him wholeheartedly.
