Highland Park defensive end Prince Dorbah didn’t necessarily have to prove himself at Sunday’s Texas Longhorns mini-camp. After all, he already had an offer from the Texas coaches. But that didn’t stop Dorbah, a top prospect in the 2020 class, from competing and showcasing his talents to the UT staff.
“I just went out there and showed my quickness, my ability to get off the ball fast and get to the quarterback,” Dorbah said following the camp. “I’m just trying to work on my hips a lot, my technique.”
It was Dorbah’s first time on the Forty Acres. After picking up a Texas offer last month, he decided to come up and get a first-hand look at what Texas had to offer. Prior to the camp, he spent time with Oscar Giles, taking pictures and getting a tour of the campus. Overall, Dorbah said he liked what he saw.
“It’s my first time up here. I just wanted to come up here and experience it for myself, see what all the hype is about, learn some stuff and take it back to my school and have fun with it,” Dorbah said. “I saw the campus. I went on a little tour. I saw the locker room, saw a lot of stuff. There’s a lot of nice stuff. I liked it.”
Last week, Dorbah spent time on the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State campuses. He said those two schools also impressed, but noted that it’s too early for him to have any sort of idea of where teams stack up in his recruiting race.
“I don’t know yet. (Texas) is like all the other schools that have offered me. They’re all the same,” Dorbah said. “I’ve only been to three schools so far.”
Next up, Dorbah will be at Arkansas on Thursday and he’ll then hit Alabama on June 23.
As for Texas, the 6-4, 215-pounder said he liked what he saw on his Sunday visit, including the stress UT puts on academics and life after football.
“It’s just that it’s a great school. You’re going to get a great education and you’re going to graduate,” Dorbah said. “I was talking to the director of academics and he said ‘We’re going to graduate you.’ That’s my first goal, that’s what I want to do, have a life after football because you’re not going to play football forever. That’s the main thing.”
On the field, the Texas coaches talked to Dorbah about utilizing his athleticism, length and versatility in the Longhorns’ defensive scheme.
“Here, they run a 3-4 defense so it would be like a b-backer, a strongside backer and kind of play that b-backer position where I can be a rush end and be a linebacker and drop back too,” Dorbah said.
Dorbah currently holds seven scholarship offers from the likes of Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, among others. He’s ranked as a four-star prospect.
