Former Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford joined my podcast for a very entertaining football discussion. He had a lot of positive things to say about a program he still loves and supports from his home in Colorado.
Here are the cliffs:
- Bedford is proud of the players he recruited who made it into the NFL (Malcolm Roach, Brandon Jones, Malik Jefferson, Charles Omenihu, DeShon Elliott, Davante Davis, Holton Hill and P.J. Locke). He praised Tom Herman and former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando for developing those players into NFL prospects.
- Bedford said Herman's offense is attacking every part of the field this season as opposed to previous years. He said Longhorns are utilizing several formations, attacking vertically and horizontally, mixing in 12-personnel, and think this is Herman's most potent offense since arriving at Texas.
- When Bedford was an assistant at Florida, Urban Meyer believed it was important to have an offense that protected the team's defense. He believes Texas has an offense strong enough to help this defense if necessary.
- In addition, he believes Texas has what it takes to defeat Oklahoma this season. He is more concerned about Oklahoma State.
- Bedford said Texas is able to apply pressure up front with its 4-2-5 defense and believes Chris Ash will be able to disguise coverages with this scheme.
- Bedford also believes Tom Herman has the program trending in the right direction. He said Texas will improve as the season progresses, making the Longhorns a very dangerous team.
- I did not ask Bedford about The Eyes of Texas, but he wanted to address it. Bedford said he is proud to sing the song and always will. He does not judge anyone else who disagrees, but Bedford still loves The Eyes of Texas.
- If offensive linemen from this state do not want to play for Texas, Bedford wants to see the Longhorns recruit out-of-state players. Bedford encouraged Herman to get offensive linemen from different states who want to become Longhorns.
- Sadly, Bedford's cat died a few years ago. However, he does have a small dog.
