The Longhorns (0-1) will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing season opener when they face UTSA (2-0) Thursday. I was slammed at work today so here's a cut down version:

The Good from the USF Game:
  • Post Playing off Each Other - PF Joyner and C Charli had some very effective moments in high-low situations, passing it effectively over smaller defenders and finishing (usually). Both bigs finished with double-doubles. Joyner had 15 and 10, Charli with 11 and 11.
  • PG Sug Sutton - Not expected to play much, she ended up with 12 points, 3 assists and 0 TOs in 24 minutes.
  • G Lashann Higgs - Made a few plays for herself off the dribble and finished with a game high 17 points. Also made the only Longhorn 3 in their 9 attempts.
  • Charli has to avoid foul trouble this season and she finished with just 1 PF in 35 minutes on the floor (team high) but wasn't a pushover on defense. She won't be able to do that the entire season and she is a bit hot-tempered so if the refs keep letting her get mugged on the offensive end, she might lash out a few times.
The Bad:
  • Only 5 of the 9 Longhorns who entered the game scored. 2 starters with 20+ minutes each (F Jada and G Joanne) finished with 0 points and 1 rebound combined.
  • Posts turning the ball over - Charli had 5 to Joyner's 4. That's more than half of the team's 17 total. Joyner travelled at least 3 times in the first half so at least she cleaned that up in the second half :)?
  • Celeste looking a lot like freshman Ariel with the touch fouls 30 feet from the basket. The freshman picked up 5 fouls in just 16 minutes on the floor, she has to gauge what the refs will let her get away with faster.
  • Getting outrebounded 34-31 by a smaller, less physically talented team. Team rebounding is usually a strength of Karen Aston teams but only 1 player outside of Joyner and Charli had more than 2 rebounds (Lashann's 4).
  • There are more but I'm in a rush.
Against the Roadrunners, the Longhorns will have a considerable size advantage inside in addition to overall athletic ability. UTSA has 1 player taller than 6' 1" and that's a 6' 5" freshman who hasn't played in their first 2 games.
