Here are a few notes gathered from sources by OB staff regarding the ninth Texas football practice of spring, a Saturday scrimmage:
- As Jason Suchomel alluded to in his QB update this morning, it is apparently seeming like a two-man show between Swoopes and Buechele in any semblance of a QB battle. In a practice which had a reported ton of scrimmaging, we've (thus far) been unable to confirm if Kai Locksley even took a single rep at QB.
- Shane Buechele had a tough day at times, one person said he threw a pick to CB Antuwan Davis and had a few other bad passes. In fairness, the person said that the offense is much quicker and a lot of those patterns are timing-deals, so sometimes it's the receiver and the QB not being on the same page.
- Speaking of quicker, the speed of the scrimmage and the time elapsed being betweens snaps was very fast, one source said if nothing else it's helping the Texas defense to prepare for the Baylors of the world.
- Swoopes got virtually all of the reps with the ones, but Buechele continues to receive some. One source said neither player "looked that great" on Saturday.
- Multiple people indicated Paul Boyette is basically receiving the Hassan Ridgeway treatment in being made to work with second team when he takes reps and being held out of certain portions. It's at least a positive that Boyette isn't spending all his time in the pit, you just hope it doesn't linger like a Ridgeway because Texas is far too thin at DT to afford that in 2016.
- Backup RB Tristian Houston got a little banged up in the scrimmage, we'll monitor this issue. One source said Roderick Bernard got a lot of run and was impressive.
- S Dylan Haines reportedly got banged up during the scrimmage, we'll keep an eye on this situation. Kevin Vaccaro reportedly was first up to take reps in his absence.
- In a goal-line situation, LB Breckyn Hager made a nice play coming off the edge with his hand in the dirt.
- DE Bryce Cottrell continues to miss practice, in his absence Charles Omenihu is carving out a role for himself.
- LB Anthony Wheeler got some first-team run alongside Malik Jefferson per a person in attendance. This is interesting as it's only a matter of time before one of the younger players usurps senior Tim Cole. This report makes you think that Wheeler has the current edge over Breckyn Hager and Edwin Freeman.
