Either one will be a upgrade, If cumbie is on the fence this long then I think his heart is not on it. This is a golden opportunity for him and not to jump on it quick throws some flags. He just needs to be careful that he is a hot commodity this year, if they pull a 5-7 next year they wont be banging so hard on his door to get him.
even with no decision from
TCU Horned Frogs co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie,
Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong is interviewing another candidate, as Orangebloods reports that Tulsa Golden Hurricane co-offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert
is in Austin on Wednesday morning.
Horns247 quickly
confirmed the news.
Texas reportedly offered the job to Cumbie during a Sunday evening meeting in Fort Worth, prompting the former Texas Tech quarterback to visit Austin the following morning, but he still hasn't announced whether he's staying at TCU or making the move to Texas.
A Dallas Morning News report on Tuesday evening indicated that "
no decision was imminent" from Cumbie and that he was out recruiting with other Horned Frogs coaches that day.
So Strong has apparently shifted his focus, at least for the moment. Given that there were no reports that Strong has already met with Gilbert previously, this could be the first substantial contact between the two parties.
And Gilbert is certainly more likely to take the opportunity to go from a co-offensive coordinator position at a non-Power 5 school to the offensive coordinator at Texas. The advancement would represent a meteoric rise for Gilbert, who was the offensive coordinator at Bowling Green last year under another Art Briles protege in new Syracuse head coach Dino Babers.
As with Cumbie, the concern with Gilbert is his play-calling acumen since former Baylor offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery, now the head coach at Tulsa, calls the plays for the Golden Hurricane.
However, Gilbert has some track record of success developing quarterbacks based on his tenure at Eastern Illinois with Jimmy Garoppollo and prior to that he made several stops around the Texas high school football ranks, giving him appealing ties around the state.
Two days ago, it seemed like Cumbie might accept the job before leaving town. Will Gilbert receive a job offer and make the decision that Cumbie has not?
