Tulsa Co-OC, Sterlin Gilbert, is in Austin this morning meeting with Strong

I thought the plan was always to interview both? We know that Cumbie is first choice, but I wouldn't be upset if we ended up with Gilbert. Perception wise it looks bad to be turned down, but no worse than losing 7 games.

With this current coaching staff I wouldn't be surprised if the were attempting to hire Garrett Gilbert as OC.

That was always the plan to bring in Gilbert to interview. He was supposed to be brought in on Monday the same day as Cumbie for a tour and interview. I think this is all still apart or the plan.

Like I said in another thread. I'll be upset if we don't land Cumbie, only bc he was our first choice not bc Gilbert isn't as good or as qualified. Gilbert is every bit the rockstar Cumbie is just on a smaller stage and less lime light.

Either one will be a upgrade, If cumbie is on the fence this long then I think his heart is not on it. This is a golden opportunity for him and not to jump on it quick throws some flags. He just needs to be careful that he is a hot commodity this year, if they pull a 5-7 next year they wont be banging so hard on his door to get him.

even with no decision from TCU Horned Frogs co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie, Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong is interviewing another candidate, as Orangebloods reports that Tulsa Golden Hurricane co-offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert is in Austin on Wednesday morning.

Horns247 quickly confirmed the news.

Texas reportedly offered the job to Cumbie during a Sunday evening meeting in Fort Worth, prompting the former Texas Tech quarterback to visit Austin the following morning, but he still hasn't announced whether he's staying at TCU or making the move to Texas.

A Dallas Morning News report on Tuesday evening indicated that "no decision was imminent" from Cumbie and that he was out recruiting with other Horned Frogs coaches that day.

So Strong has apparently shifted his focus, at least for the moment. Given that there were no reports that Strong has already met with Gilbert previously, this could be the first substantial contact between the two parties.

And Gilbert is certainly more likely to take the opportunity to go from a co-offensive coordinator position at a non-Power 5 school to the offensive coordinator at Texas. The advancement would represent a meteoric rise for Gilbert, who was the offensive coordinator at Bowling Green last year under another Art Briles protege in new Syracuse head coach Dino Babers.

As with Cumbie, the concern with Gilbert is his play-calling acumen since former Baylor offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery, now the head coach at Tulsa, calls the plays for the Golden Hurricane.

However, Gilbert has some track record of success developing quarterbacks based on his tenure at Eastern Illinois with Jimmy Garoppollo and prior to that he made several stops around the Texas high school football ranks, giving him appealing ties around the state.

Two days ago, it seemed like Cumbie might accept the job before leaving town. Will Gilbert receive a job offer and make the decision that Cumbie has not?

Strong did interview Gilbert this morning
Extended contract negotiations has delayed the decision so Strong needed to basically make a move.

BURTON SAYS HE WAS TOLD STRONG WILL HIRE AN OC BEFORE FRIDAY.

I'd rather have someone who is gung-ho and ready to lay it all out there. Excellent point that image is a fickle thing. Strike while the iron is hot, if TCU descends to middle of the pack or has offensive woes breaking in a new qb, all of a sudden he's cold product on the hot seat.

Don't know much about either candidate, but it looks like we're prepared to spend the $$$ to get the best available.

Remember when we were told he would get it done by today? Strong has no deadline. Trust me!

Unclear if Gilbert would get same offer Cumbie got, according to a source with knowledge of deal. It was $1.2 million, 3 years guaranteed.

You really are a lying aggy. You said you would stop posting and here you are running your ignorant face. Is is possible for an aggy to be truthful? I say no....it is not

hearing TCU OC, Doug Meacham, has landed the head coaching job at Tulane.

Makes more sense that Cumbie decided to stay at TCU

That was my speculation yesterday on why Cumbie would stay. Meacham is going to leave sooner or later.

AAS Horns Insider @HornsInsiderAAS

AAS has learned that Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee will be meeting with Texas Head Football Charlie Strong this afternoon. Stay tuned for more.

11:46 AM - 9 Dec 2015

Are you saying that Rhett got a text that he will be interviewing this afternoon? That's awfully presumptuous don't you think? ;)

LOL..yea, I don't think they read that before they put it out there., good catch. I think Rhett texted a friend that he will be interviewing today.

Don't know if it is true about Rhett but if this season at Auburn is any indication I say no. This sounds too much like this past season for UT.

Failure to launch

Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson went from preseason Heisman hopeful to backup to “game manager” over the course of 12 weeks.

The confidence coach Malzahn and his staff had in Johnson coming out of fall camp vanished with each interception he threw.

When the junior returned to the lineup for the team’s final five games, there was a clear reluctance to call on Johnson to make intermediate throws. The bulk of the calls were screen and swing passes at the sidelines with an occasional shot down field.

The overall numbers for Auburn’s passing game were ugly. The Tigers averaged of 175.5 yards per game was ranked 107 out of 127 FBS teams.

Bobby Burton just said, that it appears that Doug Meacham is the next HC at Tulane. So there you go....

Obviously I haven't been keeping up with the news. I thought I read last week that Meacham was named the new hc at UNT

LOL on the meachum stuff ...dohhh...

24/7 reporting Strong is reaching out to several people who have worked with Gilbert and will then make a decision on an offer.

He'd like an OC in place by Friday.
