2/3/1959 THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED- A plane leaving Clear Lake, Iowa bound for Fargo, ND with Buddy Holly (22), Ritchie Valens (17), the “Big Bopper” (28) and the plane’s pilot crashed just moments after takeoff. Two of Holly’s bandmates gave up their seats to Valens and the flu-stricken Bopper; Buddy's guitarist and a young bass player from Holly’s hometown of Lubbock named Waylon Jennings. It’s said that Valens won a coin flip with Holly’s guitarist to get the plane seat. 17-year-old Bob Dylan was at their Duluth show just 3 days prior.
