Is Quinn Ewers the best QB on Texas' 2024 SEC Schedule? Let's take a look ...
Mississippi State- Will Rogers transferred to Washington and thought about entering again after Kalen Deboer left, but elected to stay on with new HC Jedd Fisch. That left Mississippi State and new HC Jeff Lebby (formerly of OU) with Rogers' 2023 backup Mike Wright (a Vanderbilt transfer), Baylor transfer Blake Shapen, and freshman Chris Parson for now as the three most viable options for State in 2024. Lebby did recruit White while he was at UCF and there's thought that there could be a connection there.

But, Shapen will probably be the guy. Ultimately, Lebby said he'd like to have a QB who can bring something with his legs in the same way that Dillon Gabriel did last season at OU, but Shapen is more of a pocket passer, rushing for a total of 29 total yards in 8 healthy games at Baylor last year.
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): N/A
Oklahoma - The Jackson Arnold era begins in earnest next season, but it got off to a rough start in the Alamo Bowl last year against an Arizona defense engineered by new Texas co-DC Johnny Nansen. Arnold finished that game 26 of 45 through the air (57.8%) for 361 yards, 2 TDs and 3 INTs, adding 38 yards on the ground. Arnold was an awesome prospect coming out of high school, and the Sooners obviously have really high hopes for the Class of 2023 five-star. We could see a Year 2 out of Arnold that is similar to an earlier period of progression for Ewers who also came into college with elite 5-star pedigree.
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +1800
Georgia - Carson Beck. He was really good in 2023. The coolest game on the Texas schedule next season will feature the QB, who, along with Ewers, has been tabbed by the sportsbooks as an early co-favorite to win next year's Heisman Trophy. This, of course, has a lot to do with the fact that both Beck and Ewers are returning starters at the helm of very talented programs expected to be successful again in 2024, but here's how their personal numbers stack up from their 2023 seasons:
Ewers
3460 passing yards
68.5% completion percentage
22 TDs
6 INTs
Per PFF
% turnover worthy plays: 1.7%
adjusted completion %: 76.3%
big-time throw %: 3.9%
NFL passer rating: 108.0
% of pressures turned into sacks: 25.2%
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +750
Beck
3949 passing yards
72.2% completion percentage
24 TDs
6 INTs
Per PFF
% turnover worthy plays: 2.3%
adjusted completion %: 80.6%
big-time throw %: 3.8%
NFL passer rating: 114.8
% of pressures turned into sacks: 13.8%
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +750
There are so many ways to shade the numbers and give caveats: the fact that Ewers was hurt for a while last season, the surrounding casts (although they actually can be seen as relatively comparable), level of competition from Big 12 to SEC, you name it. The bottom line is, this is not only the QB matchup of the year for the Longhorns in 2023 ... if things go as the sportsbooks see them, it will be the QB matchup of the year in all of college football.
Vanderbilt - One thing that PrizePicks has taught me this year is to never bet against Diego Pavia (former NMSU QB) in the rushing department. He's transferred to Vanderbilt along with former Utah signal-caller Nate Johnson, another dual-threat guy. At this point, people seem to believe that Johnson will be in the pole position here, but either way, Vanderbilt will almost surely not have the same level of QB play as your average SEC team in 2024, like most years.
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): N/A
Florida - Graham Mertz. He was good last season in his fifth college campaign. He announced he'll be back for Round 6 in 2024 at Florida (second year in Gainesville after spending 4 years at Wisconsin). Here are some of his 2023 numbers:
Mertz
2910 passing yards
72.1% completion percentage
20 TDs
3 INTs
Per PFF
% turnover worthy plays: 1.4%
adjusted completion %: 80%
big-time throw %: 3.9%
NFL passer rating: 110.6
% of pressures turned into sacks: 23.3%
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +7500
So, the sportsbooks believe he is 10x less likely than Beck or Ewers to win the Heisman in 2024, but that surely has something to do with the fact that they likely don't see Florida as a team as equipped to have a big season that would propel an offense's trigger man into that discussion.
Arkansas - The Pigs lost KJ Jefferson to the transfer portal after he played what felt like 15 seasons in Fayettenam. Jefferson went to UCF for one more round of college ball . It looks like his replacement will be Boise transfer Taylen Green who is also a really big dude (6-6, 220 pounds). Green is not going to be a pushover despite a 57.1% completion rate in 2023 and a pretty miserable 11 passing TDs to 9 interceptions. His legs can hurt you, for sure. Over the last two seasons at Boise, he's rushed for 1024 yards and 19 TDs and he's a hard guy to get on the ground when pressured (only 8.8% of pressures from 2023 resulted in sacks).
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +10000
Kentucky - Brock Vandagriff. KU has had relatively good luck with transfer QBs lately, including Will Levis of course and then last year, 2024 Shrine Bowler Devin Leary. This year they brought in Vandagriff, an elite 5-star prospect from the 2021 class who was behind Stetson Bennett to start his career at UGA, where he committed, but eventually lost the starting job when getting his shot prior to 2023 to Carson Beck. His transfer to Kentucky leaves him with two seasons of eligibility. He clearly has a lot of upside, and has worked in pro-style offenses at UGA getting mental and physical reps for three seasons -- certainly a prime candidate to really come onto the scene and announce himself as a player at this level in 2024. But the fact is, he has thrown 21 passes in actual games in his college career at this point (57.1% completion rate for 165 total yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs over three seasons).
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +10000
Texas A&M - Connor Weigman. Weigman got hurt early on in 2023 and did not return after late September. So we can only take 4 games into consideration, but he was actually good for the Aggies to start 2023. If you listen to PFF in regard to its "grades," Weigman was their No.4 QB of the 2023 season, although on a small sample. And, to be fair to PFF, he is actually among really good company at the top: Bo Nix, Jayden Daniels, Preston Stone, Weigman, Carson Beck, Michael Penix, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, Drake Maye and JJ McCarthy round out the Top 10. (Ewers is 13th in these "grades"). Some of the underlying stats for Weigman are really strong, too, though, on just 133 total dropbacks:
Weigman
979 passing yards
67.8% completion percentage
8 TDs
2 INTs
Per PFF
% turnover worthy plays: 2.1%
adjusted completion %: 78.4%
big-time throw %: 4.5%
NFL passer rating: 107.4
% of pressures turned into sacks: 7.3%
2024 Heisman odds (Bovada): +1800
Behind Beck and Ewers, Weigman and Jackson Arnold are seen as the next-biggest favorites to win the Heisman Trophy among SEC QBs who'll be part of the Longhorns' 2024 regular-season orbit. Kyle Field is never a fun place to play (or to even watch a game), for that matter. It's only fitting that Texas' two biggest rivals on the 2024 schedule aren't scheduled to have pushovers dealing the football.
Texas arguably has the best QB of any it will face in 2024, and when looking at the landscape of the 2024 NFL draft vis-a-vis the way 2025 projects, it does appear that Ewers probably made a good decision to return and elevate his draft stock. That doesn't mean the 2024 season is going to be any kind of walk in the park, though.
