CJ Baxter Congratulating Wisner

Rewatching the game, and I noticed CJ Baxter going to Wisner to congratulate him after his 55 yard catch and run TD. Baxter looked big next to Wisner and was walking fine. I have a feeling he’s going to be impactful for us next year, but it’s going to be a really crowded back field with Blue likely coming back and Wisner, Gibson, and a recovered Clark. Good problem to have!

Recruiting Q&A - Which WRs will Texas land? Spring game recruiting updates? How would I handle QB recruiting?

AP23280565633942.jpg

How often do you get hit up by a HS kid or his circle asking how they can get noticed?

Interesting question to start with. It happens all the time. If it’s not recruits, it’s their parents or occasionally a coach. If you look at my Twitter DMs from people I don’t follow, it’s full of kids sending me their information and hudl videos. I don’t mind it. I actually appreciate the ambition.

What is the order of our WR takes?
Say we take 4. Which ones?
Moore, French, Lockett, Johnson, Harris, Marsh

I would put Dakorien Moore on his own level. Just below him I’d have Jaime Ffrench and Andrew Marsh on a level grouped together. Then Kaliq Lockett, Kelshaun Johnson, Marcus Harris and Daylan McCutcheon and maybe Tanook Hines on that next level.

If I’m predicting four in this class, give me Dakorien Moore, Jaime Ffrench, Kelshaun Johnson and I’ll go with Marcus Harris as the fourth.

How is RB recruiting looking. Looks like we narrowed it down overall to Simon, Davidson and Stewart.

We have Stewart committed, and we seem to lead for Simon. Do you agree with our potential take of Simon and Stewart or is there another RB in state or OOS that would be a better fit in your opinion?

I think a two-back class of Rickey Stewart Jr and James Simon, which I’m currently predicting, is just fine. Landing Jordon Davison would be huge, and it’s not out of the question (although Ohio State is the team to beat there), but Texas has a running back room that’s full of young talent so I don’t think missing on him is a backbreaker. The Longhorns took two highly-rated guys last year, so this might be a cycle where the coaches have to trust their evaluations and go with players who are a little underrated instead of a marquee name that might be looking for a little more open depth chart.

Did Ty Haywood or Michael Terry III attend the spring game? If not, why not and does that end their recruitment by Texas?

I don’t believe either made it in. I wasn’t really expecting them and didn’t see them. Texas and Ty Haywood just never really got off the ground, in part because UT is looking elsewhere. Michael Terry seems like a guy UT could push for down the road and still have a chance, but as of right now I’m not expecting that one to work out either.

With Sark's connection to Mater Dei and the need for Defense and LBS, how come there is no buzz on Nasir Wyatt High 4 Star?

As of late last week, Nasir Wyatt told us he was planning to attend the Orange-White game. I did not see him though so I’m trying to confirm if he made it in. I’m thinking his travel plans changed. He does like Texas and I could see UT figuring into that one at some point, but Oregon and USC are the trendy picks for him from people on the West Coast.

Who is Texas recruiting at the DE positions this cycle? Lance Jackson is already committed, but it doesn’t seem like Texas is aggressively pursuing any of the other highly ranked edge prospects from within the state like Chad Woodfork, Malcolm Simpson, Kamauryn Morgan, Michael Riles, etc.

You’re right in that a lot of the in-state names that were discussed early on as top targets seem to have kind of fallen off the board. Carmello Brooks did visit Texas a couple weeks ago as part of that big April 6 recruiting event so he’s a guy to watch (Brooks was at Cal last weekend, btw). Smith Orogbo is another who recently visited Texas and is supposed to return in June for an official visit.

Texas does have a couple out-of-state official visitors locked in for June in Hayden Lowe and Damien Shanklin.

I don't see a player like K.J. Lacey willing to wait his turn at QB here at UT .
I also believe Duncanville QB Keelon Russell has a lot of upside and would be willing to wait his turn while getting developed and prepped ala Arch Manning and Trey Owens .
I think we should offer Russell ASAP and let the chips fall where they may .
Lacey being from OOS also makes him harder to hold onto and Russell would continue the Duncanville pipeline .
What are your thoughts on this situation ?

I think it’s a good problem to have for Texas. Steve Sarkisian and AJ Milwee identified KJ Lacey very early on as the guy they wanted in the 2025 cycle, so there’s a lot to be said for that. Those dudes don’t miss on their evaluations very often. Lacey committed last summer and while he has shown up on a couple campuses to watch games, he’s always been very upfront with the Texas staff and has maintained all along that he’s very solid with his commitment. To me, that has to count for something.

I really like Keelon Russell as a player and he seems like an awesome kid, but with Lacey basically shutting out other schools I think you have to honor your word with him. Not to mention Lacey is a damn good prospect. If something happens in a couple months where Lacey starts to really flirt with another school in the way of maybe an official visit, Texas could probably still circle back to Russell and make that one happen. There is a limited window of opportunity there though … Russell told me that a late offer, say in September, would probably be too late.

Can you please tell me the date and exact time I can break out my Gary Oldman "Everyone" gif?

I’d say keep it warm for late June and July.

If you are up to the task, who in the 2026 would you say is bonafide, and who is on the fringe of 5 star status?

I’m assuming we’re talking about guys in the state of Texas. Right now, per the Rivals rankings, there are only a few guys that are in that conversation. That’ll certainly change as rankings are updated but Drew Evers, Keisean Henderson, London Smith, Tradarian Ball, Jalen Lott and Davian Groce are the players ranked in the top 50 nationally that hail from the state of Texas. Personally, I’d add a guy like OL John Turntine into that discussion and I’m much higher on Texas commitment Raycine Guillory than his current ranking (No. 149 nationally).

What is the latest on Jonah Williams?

He was at Texas A&M’s spring game on Saturday. Honestly, until he sets up a Texas official visit, I wouldn’t spend too much time focused on that one. Even with a UT OV, my belief is that Texas is playing from behind there.

James Simon plays 1A football in Shreveport. North Louisiana football is not nearly as good as what is played in the south part of the state. He looks good but does the competition he faces concern you?

I understand what you’re saying and it’s a legitimate concern, but the other side of that coin can also be true. Texas has recruited some backs from powerhouse programs that haven’t exactly panned out because their OL in college isn’t as dominant as what they ran behind in college. Calvary Baptist did turn in an undefeated state championship season last year in the Division III Select division (which appears to be mostly private schools) for what it’s worth.

Will Texas take three or more LBs in this class ?
Besides Bo Barnes (commit) and Pettijohn who is an obvious take.
Who could be the third LB ?

I’d probably go with North Crowley’s Jonathan Cunningham right now. He didn’t make it in for the Orange-White game as originally planned, but is scheduled to take a Texas official visit in June.

Do the outstanding performances of the QBs in the spring game make it more likely that K.J. Lacey will decommit?
What could Sark say that would make him stay committed?

In talking to Lacey shortly after the game, he was all smiles when talking about the QBs. He mentioned how impressed he was with Arch Manning and Trey Owens and said he has no doubts that Quinn Ewers would have heated up had he gotten more time. After those performances, the message from Sark should be on development and what he can do for Lacey.

Wimner of the Steel Cage Match for who gets D Moore on the jersey?

DeAndre or Dakorien

Gotta go with Dakorien on that one.

After portal DTs, (will we take 3 or 4?) the next room that seems a tiny bit weak is the secondary. Will we take someone there & in what position? Any guesses who?

Good timing. You sent this question in on Monday night, only to have Terrance Brooks enter the portal on Tuesday afternoon. The one name we’re really focused on right now is Arizona cornerback Tacario Davis. We’ve heard some chatter that Texas is involved there but are working to confirm.

After a visit, have you EVER had a recruit tell you they did not have a good time? It appears it is just a given that EVERY single recruit tells you they had a good time.

It does happen occasionally. In fact, it happened this year when a certain DL told me his junior day visit in January wasn’t great because it was just too crowded.

Another memorable example is when I called Andrew Coker, who was committed to TCU but had just taken an official visit to Texas. Coker had just left his hotel to return home from his visit and he told me he just wasn’t feeling it at Texas and was going to stick with TCU. I put a note on the board and the Texas coaches freaked out a bit because Coker hadn’t even told them the news of him turning UT down.

OT: any of yous ever tried the $7 luxe cravings box at The Bell?

I haven’t been there in at least a decade but keep seeing their ads on tv. It probably has one million billion calories and carbs and makes me get fatter typing what’s in it (the GI stress would occur too). It contains a chalupa supreme, beefy 5 layer burrito, double stacked taco, chips with queso and a medium drink.

How did you feel afterwards if you tried it? Were you still able to PIIHB or did the food coma get you first? This is OB. I’m sure there are some stories.

Any of you Dallasians been to a Twisted Trick restaurant/bar before?

if so you won't anymore.

couple gets a fiery drink...flaming pineapple that has everclear in it and has a flaming lime on top. Bartender pours more everclear in drink and it explodes all over them setting them on fire.

Trump DRAFT Executive Order to Create Board to Purge Generals and Admirals

I can’t send a link because I have the WSJ App for the story.

Here is the first paragraph from the article (the title of the article is the thread title although I added admirals):

“WASHINGTON—The Trump transition team is considering a draft executive order that establishes a “warrior board” of retired senior military personnel with the power to review three- and four-star officers and to recommend removals of any deemed unfit for leadership.

If Donald Trump approves the order, it could fast-track the removal of generals and admirals found to be “lacking in requisite leadership qualities,” according to a draft of the order reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. But it could also create a chilling effect on top military officers, given the president-elect’s past vow to fire “woke generals,” referring to officers seen as promoting diversity in the ranks at the expense of military readiness.“

I am interested in how our military types view this. I will hold on to my thoughts. I will note that is likely unprecedented in U.S. military history (although there have been purges of general staff by at least a couple of world leaders I can recall (those folks, however, were hung or shot, which won’t happen here).

UT students from 70's-80's. Do you remember either of these?

Those who attended UT from the mid 70’s to the mid 80’s - Do you remember either one of these guys?

1. A mounted “You Are Here” map used to stand on the southwest corner of the main building, just off the West Mall. There was an old guy (probably in his 80’s), dressed similar to Bear Bryant, with houndstooth hat, sports jacket and grey slacks that used to sit on a retaining wall near it. He’d wait for a young co-ed to come look at the map and then move in, helping them find their way, with his arm around them. Once they were informed, or just walked off, he’d give them a little swat on the ass with a rolled up newspaper he always carried with him. We called him Herbert the Pervert.

2. There was a 60-something white guy, a little chubby, with very rosy cheeks, bald on top with long white hair and a long beard, that attended UT for years. Used to see him on campus all the time. Talked with him once - his name was Val, but everyone called him Father Time. Read a story on him once that said he was left a trust fund by his deceased father and he could only draw from it as long as he was a student at UT. Read somewhere he’d already been a student for 30-40 years at the time.

There were a few other icons around campus back then (the screaming preacher lady across the street from the Co-Op. etc.) These were two of the more colorful ones that I remember.
