The Horn, mornings with Rod Babers and Patrick Davis

Until recently, I love listening to Rod Baber, although he could get deep into the weeds at times. I thought it was a good balance when paired with Erin Hogan. Now that he’s gone, they’ve paired Rod with Patrick Davis. Full disclosure: I listened to Patrick Davis some in the afternoons for a while and I had to quit because he was just one big run-on sentence or an incomplete sentence and he was just diarrhea of the mouth defined. I don’t think he’s dumb, he just can’t seem to land the plane when he’s trying to make a point, and he never takes a breath and talks about three different topics in one long sentence.

It feels like he and Rod are both in the weeds in completely different ways now and so I have been frustrates trying to listen to them in the morning It’s possible that I’m just a cranky old man, I’m curious if anybody else has had similar experience with this show, or has suggestions for my morning commute TIA.

Cheapest way to watch Longhorn sports on tv or roku?

I'm checking again...
I'm paying about $180/month for Optimum internet/TV. Looking for something cheaper to watch live Longhorn sports. I have an antenna to catch games on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX.

Optimum is my only choice, besides maybe going with Starlink

Anyone use the free DOFU app? Or the cheapest way to get ESPN +?
Or fubu for pay?
Not looking for firestick jail break stuff (I'd probably mess that up)
Hook em! Thanks

Tokyo recs…Rules Followed

Hey OB’s. Heading to Tokyo with the wife for a business trip in April. Our vendor is putting us up in the Tokyo Marriott for the week and we’re going to stay through the weekend. Looking for recs for the 2 day weekend to ourselves. A fancy hotel or resort maybe on the outskirts.

Or should we just stay at the Marriott a couple more nights for the weekend and explore Tokyo more?

Thanks in advance!

Texas BASEBALL - Tanner Witt Update

After the loss last night to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Coach David Pierce announced that RHP Tanner Witt will miss extended time with an injury.

Pierce did not elaborate further on the injury or how much time he will be out, and cannot because of HIPPA and other regulations, but based on what I've heard, Witt is having a minor procedure to do some cleanup.

All that said, based on what I've heard and the path he has been on since his initial tommy john surgery, I have a hard time believing that Witt will be back this season. That said, it is the last week of March and Witt absolutely loves Texas, while being one of the fiercest competitors out there that wants the ball and wants to compete.

On the season, Witt is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA, but has had struggles with command and repeatability.

2024/2025 Texas Basketball

Now that our season is over it is time for the coaches to start building next year's roster. Rodney Terry will be back so it isn't worth arguing over that but in order for him to have a chance to stay around he is going to have to build next year's team.

The current players eligible to return are (with next years classification):

Chris Johnson, Sophomore
Chendall Weaver, Junior
Tyrese Hunter, Senior

Cole Bott, Junior
Gavin Perryman, Junior
Alex Anamekwe, Junior (I believe he put his name in the portal)
Preston Clark, Sophomore
Ze'Rik Onyema, Senior
Devon Pryor, Sophomore
Dillon Mitchell, Junior
Jackson Prince, Sophomore

By my account that is 3 guys who actually played plus Ze'Rik played in 23 games averaging 9 minutes, Chris Johnson played in 17 games average 4.5 minutes no one else played in more than 7 game or 28 total minutes.

I'm not sure what recruiting looks like but Rodney Terry is going to have to work the off season to rebuild the top of this roster with transfers and high end recruits.

No second trial for Sam-Bankman-Fried for illegal campaign contributions and bribing foreign officials

LMAO Politicians a breathe a sigh of relief

NEW YORK — A second trial of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried on charges not in the cryptocurrency fraud case presented to a jury that convicted him in November is not necessary, prosecutors told a judge Friday.

Prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan in a letter that evidence at a second trial would duplicate evidence already shown to a jury. They also said it would ignore the “strong public interest in a prompt resolution” of the case, particularly because victims would not benefit from forfeiture or restitution orders if sentencing is delayed.

Last spring, prosecutors withdrew some charges they had brought against Bankman-Fried because the charges had not been approved as part of his extradition from the Bahamas in December 2022. They said the charges could be brought at a second trial to occur sometime in 2024.

The charges that were temporarily dropped included conspiracy to make unlawful campaign contributions, conspiracy to bribe foreign officials and two other conspiracy counts. He also was charged with securities fraud and commodities fraud.

“Proceeding with sentencing in March 2024 without the delay that would be caused by a second trial would advance the public’s interest in a timely and just resolution of the case,” prosecutors wrote. “The interest in avoiding delay weighs particularly heavily here, where the judgment will likely include orders of forfeiture and restitution for the victims of the defendant’s crimes.”

Torres del Paine vs John Muir Trails

I'm planning to do one of these in the fall. Obviously the timing would be totally dependent on the conditions at the two locales which are on opposite sides of the equator. I'm curious which one is "better". John Muir looks pretty difficult as it's 220mi vs TdP at 50mi. I'm spending 3 months in Buenos Aires this summer (their winter) so I'll be proximal to TdP, but could just as easily fly back north and do the JM in Sept/October.

What do you guys think? Anyone done one or both?

Let's play two.

March 28, 2024. MLB Opening Day. Put me in, Coach. The start of baseball season brings a feeling that is hard to describe. Our buddy @Armadillo Slim reminded me a few days ago of a beautiful essay written by the late Bart Giamatti, who had the privilege of serving all too briefly as the Commissioner. In the essay, he speaks of having his heart broken by the game he loved. He explains that some people "grow out of sports," born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts forever. Then he admits that he doesn't really want to be that grown up, that he needs to think that some things are forever, so it might as well be "the state of being that is a game...in a green field, in the sun."

Opening Day is God's reward for surviving winter. As the old joke goes, we know God's a baseball fan. Genesis, Ch 1 "In the Big Inning..."
So for today, my mind and body will be at work, but my heart will be in a green field, in the sun. Maybe we'll play two.

God's blessing to you all,
