True Detective Final (Spoiler)

The series bordered on super cool only to fall flat. I think that the plot line went about 75 different directions and the writers tried to explain everything in the last 5 min. It had kind of “The Thing” going for it and then turned the corner into the whole environmentalist narrative. Personally I would have preferred more of a true crime serial killer storyline. I’d give it a C+ but the cinematography and score were excellent.

Oh-oh! A Poster in the Corral Will Not Be Happy - Soros Backed DA Kim Gardner Found Guilty on 141 Counts

Login to view embedded media

ICYMI| St Louis DA Kim Gardner is in a world of hurt after she lost her appeal for refusing to turn over her communications with operatives of George Soros and others in her prosecution of former Gov Eric Greitens. A court has already found that she committed 62 acts of misconduct and 79 cases of misrepresentation in convicting Greitens of crimes he did not commit. He was later cleared and the extremely popular Greitens is now running for the US Senate from Missouri.

She is the first African-American to head the Circuit Attorney's Office. In 2019, St. Louis police sought 7,045 felony cases, but only 1,641 were prosecuted by Gardner's office. Many were returned to the police citing insufficient evidence, despite claims of sufficient evidence to prosecute by the police union.

The bold part explains why the great people of St. Louis live in a shit-hole.

My only duty was to describe reality as it had come to me---to give the mundane its beautiful due.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Updike
The tasks of daily life are mostly necessary and occasionally (or often) become tiresome. Mundane. Ever find yourself saying (pick from menu; listen closely as our options have changed): I don't want to take a shower today, I don't want to [shave/put on make-up], I don't want to make the bed...
We've all said this stuff; let's don't make it worse by lying about it. So how do we "give the mundane its beautiful due"?
Tired of cleaning up the dishes? Be thankful we had a meal. Tired of doing laundry? We have clean clothes and running water. Don't want to go to work? Try being unemployed.
What opportunity for joy is concealed in my next chore?
Blessings lads and lasses,
Texas in the top two for Rivals100 ATH London Smith
London Smith.jpg
London Smith is one of the country’s top prospects in the 2026 class, and the Texas Longhorns are off to a fast start in Smith’s recruitment. The Rivals100 member took an unofficial visit to Texas in January and the Texas staff has done a good enough job early on that they’re right there at the top of Smith’s list.
“I think Texas right now would be in my top two,” Smith said. “I really love Texas, really love it.”
The other school in Smith’s top two is Oregon. He has yet to visit Eugene but said he’s looking forward to getting up there at some point.
“I’ve always loved Oregon. That’s my dream school,” Smith said. “I actually had a phone call with the coach and he seemed very cool so I’m going to get up there.”
Smith’s stop in Austin in January wasn’t his first time on the Forty Acres. He’s attended a UT home game, which he said he enjoyed. Texas’ strengths both on the football field and academically has made a strong impression.
“I went to one football game. The atmosphere was amazing. Texas has a lot to offer, student-wise, athlete-wise,” Smith said. “I think coach Sark put a great emphasis on the academic part.”
Out of Waco University, Smith ranks No. 28 nationally in the class of 2026. He’s listed as an athlete due to his versatility on both sides of the ball. On his January visit to Texas, he spent quite a bit of time talking to Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph.
“I talked to coach Joseph, the DB coach. He’s always really cool to me,” Smith said. “His message was if you come to Texas, we’re going to treat you like family more than anything.”
Smith added that he doesn’t have a preference on which side of the ball he plays, saying he’ll line up wherever he’s needed. The Texas coaches, like many others, love Smith’s combination of size (6-1, 180) and athleticism.
“They like my size. They think they could put me anywhere, use me as an athlete, offense or defense,” Smith said.
Texas might have an ace up its sleeve in Smith’s recruitment in the way of current UT freshman Kobe Black, who is Smith’s cousin. Black has already been working on getting Smith to join him in Austin, which is a plus, as is the fact that UT is a short drive from Waco.
“I like it being so close to home. It’s only an hour from Waco, so I can visit my family whenever,” Smith said.
Today's Gift (2-17)
No sooner do we think we have assembled a comfortable life than we find a piece of ourselves that no longer has a place to fit in.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Gail Sheehy

We marvel at the development of a child. That first wobbly step, the first garbled word, each stage brings its own form of joy. But don't we continue to develop all through our lives? We are different at 40 from what we were at 30. If we're lucky enough to live to age 60 or 70, we can only hope that we've gained some wisdom along the way. But a little adult milestone can become a crisis if we aren't careful. Suddenly, we're not comfortable in our job or a relationship.

Those who are in recovery learn that crisis can bring much needed growth. With the courage that comes from Faith, we can all face the changes that inevitably come, and find the joy in our continued growth. Today we pray for His help, that we may have courage enough to meet that challenge of change.

Blessings and Love,

Hebrews 13:8; [Despite the changes around us], Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Dedicated to Allen Jones, who found the courage and faith to change, before it was too late.

The Texas Card House War Room: One new addition is REALLY standing out

1700692542622-png.4826

(From Anwar)

The Texas Longhorns are currently in winter conditioning during the first phase of offseason workouts. Longhorn strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton and his staff are working throughout the offseason to get Steve Sarkisian’s team ready for the SEC. Due to the many new faces on campus, the players are learning the lifting and running basics right now. In addition, they are learning workout concepts. However, I was previously told once the foundation is set, you can expect a return to the norm during the summer to prepare for the season.

Here is what I learned about offseason workouts this week:

* Workouts occur Monday and Tuesday, plus Thursday and Friday. Wednesday is a recovery day for players. Players will not have full contact until spring practice.

* The most interesting occurrence is player-led activities occurring during practice. One of the staff’s offseason goals is to identify and develop leaders within the team. So far, a few players have emerged.

* Longhorn players participate in player-led workouts before each practice. Each position group has a designated leader who leads his group during workouts. I was not given the names of each position leader but here are a few:

  • This will not come as a surprise, but Quinn Ewers leads the quarterbacks.
  • Texas center Jake Majors leads the offensive line.
  • Barryn Sorrell is currently leading the defensive linemen.

* On their own, players are running up Clyde Littlefield Dr. instead of walking to the practice field. They work out on their own for at least 30 minutes before practice begins.

* I was told the workouts have been grueling, especially for the new players. Becton is making the players run A LOT and pushing them. One person told me Becton’s workouts are not for the weak.

* Sarkisian and his staff are starting to scratch the surface of installing the playbook. The coaches began the installation this week but have not dived deep into the playbook.

* I asked one person to name the most impressive freshman so far. Without hesitation, I was told former Mater Dei offensive lineman Brandon Baker has caught the attention of many people during workouts. Baker is massive but very fluid with his movements. Baker looks like an elite player during the early stages of winter conditioning.

* The staff has high expectations of defensive tackles Vernon Broughton and Alfred Collins. Right now, nobody is ready to say either will replace Byron Murphy II and T’Vondre Sweat. Nevertheless, Broughton and Collins have hit the ground running this offseason.

* I was told former UTSA EDGE Trey Moore looks good, from a physical standpoint. One person told me Moore is in tremendous shape and physically looks like a guy who belongs at Texas.

*****

(Alex)

* I caught up with one person close to the football team this weekend and asked them about a few different topics. On T'Vondre Sweat and his weight, I was told that he didn't weigh in at the Senior Bowl "because he probably weighs 380." The general point was that players on the team during the stretch run in 2023 knew that Sweat was playing at an even heavier weight than the 362 pounds he is listed as. You can bet that one of Sweat's biggest goals over the next two weeks is to get his weight down in order to show he takes keeping his weight in check seriously.

* I asked about how winter workouts are going and this person said that they are mainly working with strength and conditioning coaches right now, but that the team is having player-led workouts on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football. Quinn Ewers, Anthony Hill and David Gbenda were all mentioned as players leading the workouts.

* Does this mean that Gbenda is slated to start out spring as the starter opposite Anthony Hill? "Probably," I was told. This person said that everyone knows that the staff wants Hill in more of a will/outside role that can free him up to do some of the stuff we saw last year off the edge and in space, and Gbenda complements him well.

* I asked how the linebackers and the DLs like their new position coaches, and was told that they liked getting to meet them and getting to know them, but haven't really had that much of an opportunity to be coached by them yet. There is only limited time the players have with the staff as far as being coached right now, and both Nansen and Baker have apparently been traveling, recruiting, etc. I got the feeling the players have at least gotten some instructions from them about drills to run in player-led workouts, though. The front seven will get much more acquainted with their new coaches in an on-field setting soon enough.

* One more note on the defensive side of the football: I asked how the new edge guys, Colin Simmons and Trey Moore, looked. "Trey is crazy, man. And you know I don't just say that about guys. He's crazy." Apparently Moore has been making a solid impression to start out in Austin after transferring in from UTSA.

*****

(Suchomel)

* Wide receiver Taz Williams is still a ways off from deciding (he hasn’t even dropped a list of favorites yet) but if the Longhorns continue to recruit him aggressively, I expect Texas to be a strong contender. Williams is pretty methodical with how he’s approaching recruiting, and he’s big on WR development. Chris Jackson’s coaching/playing history is helping Texas, as is Steve Sarkisian’s history of producing top receivers in his offensive scheme. Williams took note of the Texas receivers from last year.

“I look at that a lot. (Xavier Worthy) ate this year. When I watched the games, when I’d go to them, he was doing big things. They had him, then they had AD, they sprinkled in a little bit of Johntay, Whittington. They sprinkled in a little bit of everybody,” Williams told OB.

* Many of you have seen this tweet by now of Boobie Feaster showing up to last weekend’s Pylon tournament with a Texas backpack …

Login to view embedded media
I was joking with Feaster and asked him what I was supposed to make of his backpack choice …

“If you think that’s a hint, that’s a hint,” he said.

* Might Texas fall victim to the dreaded “dream school” with Jonte Newman? Last summer, Newman put that label on the Longhorns but recently said he and Bridgeland OL teammate Ryan Fodje had been talking about going to the same school together. One of the schools they discussed was Oklahoma, and Fodje committed to the Sooner last week. We’ll see how much that impacts Newman’s eventual decision.

* Newman did attend UT’s junior day in February and got some time with Sark and Kyle Flood.

“It was a great visit. Coach Sark talked to us a bunch about the experience, just how Texas is,” he said. “I talked to coach Flood a lot. He said this is where you want to go if you want to go to the NFL. I really appreciated how he said that and I just liked being (there).”

Newman said the Longhorns are “definitely” in his top five. OU, Alabama and USC are also in there.

* Texas already had one 2026 RB commitment from Raycine Guillory. If the Longhorns take two, Carthage’s KJ Edwards is a name to know. Tashard Choice like Edwards enough to offer in the spring of his freshman year, and Edwards loves what he’s heard from Choice so far.

“His vision for me, he sees that I can be one of the top prospects in my class. He says just get better with my hands, because the protection and just being a balanced back can take you a long way in football,” Edwards said.

On top of his relationship with Choice, Edwards thinks he’d be a great fit in the UT offense. “They’re a spread offense. I can fit right into that instead of getting used to the formation and the plays,” he said.

(Note: Guillory will join House Divided on Orangebloods Live tomorrow at 12:20 pm cst)
