2019 Recruiting Thread

Sanders is Bama bound. Cain is better for our offense anyway. He's the inside zone masher.

I like both, size and speed, like D'onta Foreman. Sanders has both. Could be wrong, but Cain looks more like Benson, which is to say he's not breaking away anywhere.

Still not convinced we couldn't take Sanders from Bama. Oh well, can't go wrong either way I guess. I just really like Trey a lot more. Derrian looks like he has some speed though.

Either one is a great pick up. Sanders has the size and speed advantage but Cain is no slouch either. I'd be happy either way!

i'd take benson over d'onta. maybe it's because we were losing more with d'onta but i was generally meh on him. then again, he may have kept things from being REALLY embarrassing

Yeah not me. No way. Benson had a much better O line and actual QBs. If those two could trade places, Foreman would've won the Heisman, and we wouldn't even remember Ced.

Will always remember Ced he won 3 state championships for Lee that will never be forgotten. I see your point but benson wasn't scared to hitsomeone.

Hmm, do I hear some Midland bias in there? Lol. True he wasn't scared to hit someone, but he also didn't have the explosiveness of D'onta to make something happen when the blocking breaks down. Ced was great, I just think D'onta was more on Ricky's level. Shame he had to play on such a shitty team.

Hell yeah Midland Lee! I remember Benson ending Huston Street's football career in that state title game in DKR that one year.

I was at that game. The new wife and I had nothing to do so we made our way to DKR, actually I think it was still just Memorial Stadium.
Cedric lit up Street as he crossed the goal line.

Huston Street, there's a name I haven't heard of in a while. Didn't know he was a football guy also.

Yep, he was an all-state safety. Undersized and obviously overmatched physically by Benson, but Street still put up a valiant effort. He had 20-something tackles in the title game, and most of them were on Ced. He definitely felt that game for while afterward.

He was strong safety for Westlake that day. Had Benson bull rushing him all day. Think he made the correct career choice.

Give me Jacoby Jones and Myron Warren on the D line and I'll be very happy.

Alabama offered RB DJ Williams of Sebring, FL. Hmm. No Trey Sanders?

Any day now: I.Hookfin
National 24/7 analyst, Wiltfong, has crystal balled OL Isaiah Hoofkin of Fort Bend Dulles to UT.

Maybe Juco: Myron Cunningham

OT Isaiah Hookfin, Sugarland Dulles (TX) -- We were able to take a look at the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder in Sugar Land on Thursday night. We see what Texas sees - untapped potential, great feet and balance, and really solid technique in pass protection. Not much punch and could play angrier in the run game. He's a late bloomer that would tuck neatly into this class. More schools are catching on as well - Auburn, Mississippi State, and Arizona State want him now too. He took an unofficial visit last weekend to Austin, bonded Wild Hogs-style with Tyler Johnson, and will likely take an official to the 40 Acres in December. I like where this is trending.

OL Myron Cunningham, Iowa Central CC (IA) -- His recruitment and Hookfin's could be tied together. Both are tackles who offer athleticism, they're just on different plots of the eligibility spectrum. Cunningham, like Hookfin, will likely visit in December. Taking both isn't out of the question but Texas may defer to the grad transfer market if it doesn't go with a Juco option.

Offensive lineman Isaiah Hookfin attended the West Virginia came on an unofficial visit and was hopeful a UT offer would come his way. Hookfin got his wish after the game was over.

“We went in the lounge area. Coach (Herb) Hand had come and talked to me and my family and presented the offer to me,” Hookfin said. “I kind of saw it coming, but didn’t really see it at that moment. It was just joy, happiness of course.

“It was the same with my family. My mom was excited as always, my dad was happy for me. My little sister was just there. She was proud of me didn’t want to show it.”

Texas is in a good spot here and has made a really good impression over the past few weeks, but Hookfin has maintained that he wants to take his time and not rush into a decision.

“I’m still taking it slow. I’m not going to rush anything. I still want to evaluate all my options, look at what fits me, what can help me the best,” Hookfin said.

The 6-5, 273-pound Hookfin said he and the UT staff talked about an official visit, but no dates has been set up. He did say it’s “likely” that he’ll return for an OV though. Auburn is another that will get a visit and Mississippi State is a possibility that was mentioned.

When it comes time to decide, Hookfin said getting on the field early will be a key factor.

“Right now it’s playing time,” he said when asked what factors will be important in his decision. I want to set myself up to start or play a lot as a freshman. Just to get some experience, if possible, get those years and then be able to go to the next level.”

I asked Hookfin what he knew of UT’s depth chart …

“They have a good amount of depth as far as o-linemen. I know coach Hand is looking for more
lean tackles like Cosmi, that type of build at tackle,” Hookfin said. “I know he’s looking more of that in the last couple years. So I’m really trying to set myself up to be that guy for these schools.”

Been trying to tell you. I still think there's something to that twitter exchange between him and Bru.

Still not sure how this works if we get Cain, considering the 3 RB class thing. Maybe he doesn't mind if one of those is his hs teammate? This could get very interesting.

In those state games I can still picture him running down that side line by himself I think it was raining too

As always with Texas recruits the one thing I want to see, the one thing we all want to see, is can he help us beat OK? Will they play like 4* against them?

So far I've liked what I've seen from Coach Herman's recruits who've played against OK.
Needless to say Sam has shown up, but so has Ingram, Sterns, Foster and of course...

Dicker the kicker

One final thought I've noticed that 8 of our commits are from out of state. Now that's interesting.

They’ve had to go out of state because they’ve only landed two recruits inside the top 25 of Texas. Herman needs to get that back under control in the next class that’s unacceptable.

The needs of this class are extremely thin in the state. The state has like 2 elite DL, and most would say just one with that being Leal. If you don't have what you need in state, you've got to go somewhere else to get it. Lest we forget what happened in state last year, I think Herman will be fine in state going forward.

The Football Brainiacs are saying that UT is still pursuing TCU Commit OL Andrew Coker of Katy Taylor. He will not be in Austin this weekend for the Iowa State game, but he could possibly take an official visit in December.

Super K

***In case you missed it, last week, Texas 2019 DT target, Rodas Johnson (Columbus, OH) committed to Wisconsin. As you may recall, Johnson is originally from Texas. He moved to Ohio when he was around 11 years old but still frequents the great state to see family. He visited Texas this past summer and was planning on taking an official visit.

Johnson tells me however that since his commitment he hasn’t had contact with Texas. So it appears the Horns have moved on.

***When I saw TCU OL commit, Andrew Coker a few weeks ago he said, unequivocally, he would take an official visit to Texas. At the time he had said he would also take an unofficial visit to Texas for the West Virginia game.

That did not happen. I checked with him earlier this week and he tells me he will not be able to make it to the Iowa State game. However, I’m told Texas is still pursuing him.

Look for him to possibly take an official in December. Texas will have a big recruiting weekend after the season.

***A JUCO running back to keep an eye on is Rhamondre Stevenson (Cerritos College). The Sooners recently offered Stevenson and when I checked on him I discovered that Texas has actually been in touch with him for bit, as well.

Everything I’ve heard from my contacts out in California have been glowing about Stevenson. He’s considered far and away the best running back in the JUCO ranks in Cali. I’m told he’s very big and very fast.

***2019 DE, Myron Warren tells me that he’s still hoping to make it up to Texas this weekend for an unofficial visit. As of yesterday, however, it sounded like he still wasn’t sure if he’d be able to make it.

I honestly don’t know why Texas doesn’t simply bring him on an official visit. I would surmise they want to make sure they hold on to their official visit in case more schools jump in the mix before signing day. But getting him in this weekend for a home game environment would be helpful.

***Also, a quick note on high upside 2019 OT, Isaiah Hookfin. He will not make it in this weekend for the Iowa State game. He tells me that he still has yet to set up his official visit to Texas or any other school (he already took one to Illinois).

That may have a little bit to do with it. Floyd, Tillman, Smith, and Watson are all better options that anything in-state. But at WR, S, TE, DT we had to go OOS b/c of misses in-state.

I think the far bigger issues (and they are temporary) are:

1) Texas' two primary recruiting rivals in Texas are OU and A&M. Both are going through new coach recruiting honeymoons this class. And OU is doing it coming off a playoff appearance.

2) Herman's first season was an improvement in many aspects compared to the previous three seasons of the old regime, however they were still 7-6.

3) Texas' 2018 class was an absolute monster. They dominated the state better than possibly has ever been done: six of the top seven and ten of the top 13 in state. They also had maybe the best DB class ever signed. In-state recruits see this and know all these guys well. Some of them just don't want to sign up to come in behind them. like the A&M commit that literally told a reporter Texas' class was too good and I don't want to compete with that.

Recruiting updates after the ISU win:

Stampede:

— This weekend was important for several reasons, but something that stood out the most to me was the impression Texas made on key defensive line target Myron Warren. Texas was the presumed leader heading into his trip to Austin, but the Longhorns still had competition from Oregon as well as a dark cloud that was a potential LSU offer hanging over their heads. However, Warren publicly named Texas his leader after his first ever trip to Austin and set his decision date for Dec. 8. Keep in mind that Warren is officially visiting Texas on the following weekend. I would be extremely surprised if the Longhorns don’t land Warren.

— So what about that potential LSU offer? It could still happen as LSU would like to take two more defensive linemen, per Geaux247’s Shea Dixon. While Ishmael Sopsher likely taking one of those spots, there are still a lot of moving parts with the other. Unless LSU offers before Warren makes his decision, I wouldn’t be too worried. If Warren does pick Texas on Dec. 8, the Longhorns are going to press for him to sign during the early period and should have success doing so.

— Texas hosted one official visitor this weekend in JUCO defensive lineman Jacoby Jones, who backed out of his verbal pledge to Oklahoma last week. UT defensive line coach Oscar Giles worked extremely hard on Jones behind the scenes while he was still committed to OU and made a big impression this weekend. As I mentioned when he first arrived, Texas Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington picked Jones up from the airport. Carrington was also heavily involved all weekend with Jones. From everything I was able to gather, Texas hit a homerun this weekend and is in the pole position. Still, the Longhorns will have to fend off Oregon.

Inside Texas:

MYRON WARREN, the man from Many...

Out of the swamp, Malcolm Roach style, Warren arrived in Austin on Friday evening with one mission -- learn everything he can about Texas Football. He left with a big smile on his face, a decision date, and plans to return to the 40 Acres. “It was a wild atmosphere,” said Warren about his first trip to the ATX. “An awesome night. It felt like home. I've decided to announce on December 8th, and I'll be taking my official visit here on December 14th.

He’s no longer playing the waiting game with LSU. He’s making sure he’s got a spot straight so he can announce early next month. The former TCU pledge from Many grew up like most Louisiana natives with a purple crush on the Tigers. But Texas has done a tremendous job with Warren and his family since his offer less than a month ago. “Texas has an outstanding program and everything really stands out from the fans, the players, and the coaches,” Warren explained.

Good foresight by the staff making sure they saved his official visit. He’ll be back in Austin for the red carpet OV six days after his announcement date. That should tell you something. “I was happy that (UT) got to show me around the campus, facilities,” Warren said. “(UT) showed a ton of love towards my family. I see that they really want me to be a part of the family.”

I really like Warren, and I just hope LSU doesn’t. If LSU offers at any point before he signs Texas may be out of luck. As of now Warren wants to sign on NSD2 but expect UT to try and coax him to sign in December.

.....BUTLER C.C.’s Jacoby Jones

When the 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end watched Gary Johnson’s breakout year last fall, Jones pondered the possibilities of the student-athlete life in Austin. But he committed to OU. Too soon apparently. After Mike Stoops was removed, his desire to play in Norman sputtered. His de-commitment signified a major shift in his recruitment as his official visit at Texas was a mere days away.

The staff hit the proverbial home run with Jones and his family. He’s a 3-for-2, but like I mentioned in the Prospects Thread, he won’t redshirt at UT. The plan is hit 270-275 pounds by next summer-fall to get him ready for 4i in the Big 12. Texas looks real good here. The #fUTure19 has two defensive linemen currently committed. They’ll take these two as well.

On Isaiah Hookfin…The 6-foot-5, 265-pound tackle from Sugar Land got knocked out of the playoffs on Friday night. As he prepares to move on to life after Dulles Football, there's an entirely different chapter Hookfin is ready to begin. He'll take an OV to Austin on December 8-9th and with no other trips scheduled. Do the math. Orange house.

Another side note; just because you don't see a certain emoji tweeted doesn't mean Texas only have a silent or two. The staff was incredibly active this weekend, filling holes that really needed filling. I think this d-line haul might turn out nicely.

Wouldn't hold my breath on him. He has too many close friends at USC. Just seems like he's searching for a reason to pick them.

Scholz....you are right on as usual, but USC is by the minute turning from a shitshow to a worse shitshow and This isnt lost on him.....or his family. I have no inside info whatever, but I feel very good about this recruitment.
