A full decade after our last truly successful season, the outcome of the 2020 slate of games could have major implications for the next decade of Texas football. If Tom Herman and Co can do enough in 2020 to remain at Texas in 2021, things could really start to make a major upswing as all the pieces will truly be in place and the cupboard will actually be stocked. If I am CDC, I would continue to be patient with Herman in 2020, knowing that staff continuity could pay major dividends for 2021 and beyond. The fan base at large won't be happy with another 7-5 season but it could be wise to retain Herman even if that is the case. Here's to hoping for at least a 10 win season which could really set us up for success.

Why the patience? Wholesale coaching changes almost always come with a mass exodus of players and a down year in recruiting. The 2021 roster has a chance to be stocked with experienced and skilled players at all positions as well as being loaded with blue chip true freshmen from what is shaping up to be a stellar 2021 recruiting class in the state of Texas. If a new head coach is brought in, expect the transfer portal to be hopping, remaining players to be potentially poor fits for new systems and for Texas to have a down year on the recruiting trail during a year that could be the best in a long time.

Take a look at the potential 2021 roster, including current 2021 commits and those whom Texas has a legit shot at signing. Note, I am not sure how all redshirts will work out.

QB (biggest limiting factor for 2021 will be replacing Sam - this is a good group to pick from)
- Redshirt Junior Casey Thompson
- True Junior Roschon Johnson
- Redshirt Freshmen JaQuinden Jackson
- Redshirt Freshmen Hudson Card
- True Freshmen Jalen Milroe

RB
- Senior Keontay Ingram
- Redshirt Sophomore Jordan Whittington
- True Sophomore Bijan Robinson
- True Freshmen Camar Wheaton or LJ Johnson

WR (this is seemingly the weakest position - thanks Mehringer)
- Senior Brennan Eagles
- Redshirt Junior Malcolm Epps
- Redshirt Junior Al'vonte Woodard
- True Juniors Jake Smith and Marcus Washington
- True Sophomore Troy Omiere
- Unclear 2021 commits (Quay Davis could contribute, most others redshirt)

TE
- Redshirt Senior Cade Brewer (likely gets a medical redshirt)
- Senior Reese Leitao
- True Juniors Brayden Liebrock, Jared Wiley
- True Freshmen Lake McRee, Juan Davis

OT
- Senior Sam Cosmi (probably in NFL after next year if not this one)
- Redshirt Juniors, Junior Angilau, Rafiti Ghirmai, Christian Jones, Reese More
- Redshirt Sophomore Isaiah Hookfin, Tyler Johnson
- Redshirt Freshmen Jaylen Garth, Logan Parr, Jake Majors, Andrej Karic
- True Freshmen Tommy Brockermeyer, Savion Byrd, Hayden Conner, James Brockermeyer, and a 4 star guard or 2

DL
- Seniors none (wow)
- Juniors Daniel Carson, Keondre Coburn, Moro Ojomo
- Redshirt sophomores Peter Mpagi, T'vondre Sweat, Myron Warren
- True Sophomore Vernon Broughton (Princely Umanmielen, Alfred Collins?)
- Redshirt Sophomore Sawyer Goram-Welch
- True Freshmen Ja'Tavion Sanders (Landon Jackson, Marcus Burris, Tunmise Adeleye?)

LB
- Senior Juwan Mitchell, Joseph Ossai
- Redshirt Juniors Ayodele Adeoye, Byron Vaughns
- Redshirt Sophomore David Gbenda, Marcus Tillman Jr
- Redshirt Freshmen Jaylan Ford, Prince Dorbah
- True Freshmen Derrick Harris Jr (Clayton Smith?)

CBs
- Seniors Kobe Boyce, Anthony Cook, Jalen Green, D'shawn Jamison
- Redshirt sophomores Marques Caldwell, Kenyatta Watson
- Redshirt Freshmen Kitan Crawford
- True Freshman Billy Bowman (Ishmael Ibraheem, Hunter Washington?)

S
- Seniors Montrell Estell, BJ Foster, Demarvion Overshown, Caden Sterns
- Redshirt Sophomores Chris Adimora, Tyler Owens
- Redshirt Freshmen Xavion Alford, Jerrin Thompson
- True Freshmen (JD Coffey?)

In my view, this represents the most experienced talent in the starting ranks and quality depth that we have had in years. If Herman is out after 2020, you can start erasing some of the current players and definitely some of the 2021 guys.

so, no excuses next year.....

It won’t be just one thing like going 7-5 whether TH is retained or released. There will be other factors including how we end this bowl game. Ie:
Losses vs blowouts
Anemic offense even if 7-5
Porous defense where offense has to score a lot of points to win
Ending the season with declining level or quality of play ascompared to how the season began.

I think we will have some question marks in 2020 at:
QB - Can Sam remain healthy once again and if not, is Casey Thompson a legit back up.
RB - depth behind Ingram includes a true freshmen in Bijan and a redshirt freshmen (Whittington) who has been hurt all this year, and rarely used Daniel Young
WR- who steps up and fills dev duvs and CJs shoes. I'm hoping we see a big jump with Mehringer out of the picture. I think he held that position back in a big way
TE - Can Cade Brewer stay healthy? Who steps up out of Reese, Braydon or Wiley
OL - Does Cosmi stay? Who plays center?

We had so few major contributors on defense as seniors I think the core of players will be roughly the same (minus Brandon Jones, Jeffrey McCulloch and Roach).

Totally agree. I was just providing a general benchmark. Depending on circumstances and details a 6-6 season could be better for Tom than an 8-4. My main point was even with another poor record, I'm hoping the optics are good enough that he can be retained so we don't have to start this cycle over once again.

I would leave RoJo in as RB and move Whittington to WR. I highly doubt RoJo can beat out Thompson at QB so might as well use him where he has proved to be helpful. Whittington was originally a WR so the move shouldn't be too big of a change for him and it would get him on the field.

I understand patience but sometimes we can go too far. Take shaka smart, he has found a way to go 9-1 and drop 25 slots in the kenpom. It's truly amazing. I don't think herman wants to go that path but he constantly complains about the sec and their sad sisters of the poor scheduling.

Yep, both of those moves could totally happen. Whittington will always be at least a RB/WR type in the positionless football model. We will see about RoJo, he seemed to be a natural at RB

Let's let things play out with Shaka this year. Not sure we should complaint too much about a 9-1 basketball team. But as you say, it could just be smoke and mirrors at this point.

I know a lot of people are really upset with this year myself included. But i think we should wait until next year to really see how it goes before we give up on Herman. With more experience returning on the defensive side of the ball for next year and a fresh new start with a new defensive coordinator maybe they can turn things around. I’m optimistic about next year but also nervous at the same time. Hook em!!

Next year’s team is loaded, as well as 2021. The way these “fans” have been pudding down their legs and wailing at the sky, is pathetic.

2020
QB- Sam, Casey
RB- Ingram, Rojo, Robinson, Wittington, Young
WR- Eagles, Smith, Woodard, Washington, Epps, Moore, Lewis
TE- Brewer, Leitao, Liebrock, Wiley
OT- Cosmi, Okafor, Moore, Hookfin
OG- Angilau, Imade, Jones, Johnson, Tyler
C- Kerstetter, Ghirmani

DT- Coburn, Ojomo, Graham, Sweat, Broughton
DE- Bimage, Ossai, Jones, Carson, Warren, Mpagi
LB- Mitchell (I hope), Adeoye, Tillman, Vaughns, Gbenda
S- Sterns, Foster, Brown, Thompson, Overshown, Estelle
CB- Jamison, Cook, Green, Boyce, Watson, Caldwell, Duvernay

New DC and new OC. I say bring it on

So we can expect 11 wins then since were loaded and Tom Herman is the most mature, nicest, smartest coach in the history of ever!!!!

Anything less than 10 wins with this loaded roster will we have your permission, oh great one, to be upset?

We could see Derrian Brown in the future with being cleared for activity. We could lose from our DL Peter Mpagi diagnosed with heart conditions and recently being released from the hospital for the 2nd time. Looking forward to the future ONLY if ol Tommy Boy can get it together.

3 years in and you already cleaned house and made wholesale changes in coordinators and philosophy on both sides of the ball. What was your confidence 3 years ago? And what have you seen in the last 3 years that gives you confidence that the next 3 years will be different? I’ll hang up and listen

Absolutely. 2020 has been the year most people expected Texas to compete for the title since that class was signed. If Texas doesn’t win at least 10 next year, there has been some serious under achievement.

Not holding my breath. Get ready for disappointment. We go 8-4 maybe 9-3.

3 years ago Texas fans were pissed that Herman brought all of his buddies with him from Houston. I didn’t have much of an opinion then. It’s very rare that a coach gets a major job and doesn’t bring the guys that he trusts with him, as he wouldn’t be in that spot without them. I was underwhelmed by the Beck hire, but didn’t know much about him either, so it was hard for me to judge it. I was very pleased with season 2, felt like Texas over-achieved a bit. Very disappointed this season. Between the injuries and poor coaching on defense, this team wasn’t fun to watch early on. Later, when the defense began to improve, the offense completely shit the bed. Really disappointing season all around. I am hopeful that a better DC and an OC that can actually prepare and EXECUTE the game plan, will be a big improvement. Herman obviously wasn’t very good at calling plays and managing the team at the same time.

I get your point but when your have a coach making 5 mil you wouldn’t think he’d have to scrap his whole offensive and defensive philosophies- isn’t that what got him hired in the first place? I just try to relate things on a personal level which is probably a mistake. I doubt many of us would be getting a pat on the back and a go get’um attitude, more like a pink slip followed by a kick in the ass

Better defense and an effective running game should get us to 10 wins. I think Sam played hurt most of the season, that probably cost us at least two wins. If we can stay away from the injury bug, 2020 could be a break out season.

The staff needs to figure out why they completely under perform on road games. OU, TCU, Iowa St, and Baylor were our worst games offensively and all were on the road. Was that game planning or something else?

He’s not abandoning his offensive philosophy, that’s why Harrell isn’t coming. He wants to maintain his style of play and let a good play caller do it, kind of like Gundy. We will see if it works out. And you’re right. Most of us would have been thrown out by now, but his second season bought him some time

Well, last year Texas won 10 games plus the Sugar Bowl over Georgia who was one of the nation's best teams. Next 3 years "may" be different because we have more upperclassmen in the system. Other than that, not a whole lot. None of us really know if things will go downhill or if TH turns it around. Nonetheless, Texas has more going for it than against it.

I think the turn around can continue if Herman makes it to 2021. Things may go downhill fast if he can't and we restart the cycle once again.
