After Chris Warren III had a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma State, followed by three straight incomplete passes, I began to wonder how many times running backs carried the ball on consecutive plays this season. Texas football coach Tom Herman has a stated goal to be a running team. Herman has presented stats on several occasions to show how championship football teams are dedicated to the ground game. Obviously, Texas has struggled to run the ball this year – ranked seventh in the Big 12 (ahead of Baylor, Iowa State and Kansas) and 81st in the nation – and there have been different reasons given by players and coaches to explain these issues.
One of Texas’ main issues is simply a lack of dedication to the run game.
When I examined the play-by-play of each game this season, I wanted to see how many times these running backs carried the ball on at least two consecutive plays. I did not factor in quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s runs because the staff said many of his rushes were not designed plays. Instead, I focused on the amount of times Chris Warren III, Kyle Porter, Toneil Carter or Daniel Young received at least two straight carries. As you can imagine, that number is pretty small.
Here are the results from every game this season (play-by-play of each possession is listed below):

Here are some other numbers to note:
- Texas has run 567 offensive plays this season.
- Running backs average 4.7 yards on their first carry before receiving the ball a second time. It appears running backs need an average of 5-yards a carry to receive another opportunity.
- Longhorn running backs average 2.89 yards on their second carry after at least one of them is given the ball.
- Running backs gained zero yards on their first attempt three times. In addition, there have been three occasions where no yards were gained on the second straight carry.
Texas may want to dedicate itself to running the ball, but even in close games, using this group of running backs is not a propriety. Some Longhorn observers will attribute the failure of Texas’ run game to lack of touches given to players by offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Others will say the struggles are due to a lack of talent at the position. The rest will blame injuries to the offensive line. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
