I'm gonna vent a little. Yesterday sucked. Here's what I think I know though:
1) There is no defensive depth-- we are talent deficient on that side of the ball, for whatever reason. If we weren't we wouldn't have a walk-on starting at linebacker and a dude starting at WR that played WR last year. and I'm not disparaging those guys at all (more on that in a bit). We also have no edge rushers, which is a pretty important thing these days. Joseph Ossai is gone. We need to find more of those types, which is probably why we've been getting commits from d-linemen every other day for the last 2 months-- the coaches probably recognize there's an issue.
2) The coaches-- because of this talent deficiency, none of which is their fault AT ALL, they are hamstrung. if they had a dude to come in to spell schooler, ya think they might? I am a mere high school coach, but i'm pretty good at it and know what i'm seeing. yesterday in the 4th fowler said something akin to "oklahoma is subbing here, and Texas is not subbing at all." IT'S BECAUSE WE HAVE NOBODY TO SUB! LEAST OF ALL IN THAT SITUATION! yet some of you clowns want to fire PK today.
3) the o-line-- see the defense. there's just not any horses in the stable. clob may be onto them being soft. the school i'm at has a real chance to win state, but we have an inexperienced o-line that sometimes struggles. is it a matter of reps and technique?-- we can fix that. OR is it a matter of just not being nasty enough? if THAT'S the case, we're living on borrowed time. sark is trying to use smoke and mirrors to make it work until the horses are in the stable.
4) some of y'all-- i get fans and all. but let me tell you it is disgusting when we have people online bashing the dudes out there. because i'm not seeing lapses of concentration, and i'm dang sure not seeing lack of effort. brockermeyer, schooler, foster, kerstetter... they're all busting their tails. i don't know clob's identity, but using context clues, he played for us (best i can tell he's the only one on here). he didn't win them all. i'm sure he missed some tackles. best i can tell, he played for mackovic-- and there was one season where the team straight quit on him. i'm not saying clob was or was not on the team, and if he was i'm not saying he quit at all. but are you all gonna call him out??? i don't see 4 natty's hanging on the wall from the 90s, so i guess they lost once or twice. anyway, i just don't like that when kids are bleeding for the program.
5) so who am i mad at after yesterday?-- nobody. the team that now sits at #4 in the nation needed straight runnin luck on about 8 different plays to beat us. seriously, name one play we got lucky. we were clearly prepared-- which is a departure for us from some recent years. the kids played their tails off. worthy made a mistake then emphatically made it right. look, if the talent level is this thin in a couple years, throw rocks. i suspect it won't be. while i'm thinking about it, some of y'all chirp about the portal too much-- there's a reason they're in there, usually.

side note-- not sure the freshman qb was so great. very simple schemes for him, and he just chunked it up and got lucky a couple times. if i had a beef, it would be the lack of recognition of this. but with a 2 and 3 score lead most of the game, conventional wisdom says let em run.

anyway, i like these coaches. thank God this board wasn't around for mack brown's first season-- lost his first game to nc state due to 2 blocked punts. i'll call em out if they suck-- shaka, watson, i was rooting for charlie but..., shaka, herman's childishness, shaka

anyway, i'll stop venting

There were several 50/50 plays that killed us. OU made the 50/50 plays and we didn't. They get the TD on 3rd and 19 on a 52 yard heave hail mary throw into coverage. OU receiver makes a great catch and is able to keep his foot in bounds by a couple inches. We have the same play with Marcus Washington where he makes a great catch in the end zone but his foot is out of bounds by a couple inches. All of those plays went against us yesterday. I agree our effort was there but our tackling and wrapping up was absolutely abominable. Despite the poor defensive play, we still should've won that game.

I think, ultimately, it was the gut punch of absolutely crushing them for 15 minutes in every phase of the game. Then holding serve through the next 15 minutes.

Then watching helplessly, as we slowly, systematically, had our wheels fall completely off. It's like watching your first born win the Indianapolis 500, and then drive off the track to the nearest ravine and crater himself and his 2 million dollar car, at the bottom. And there isn't jack sh!t you can do about it. And the worst part of all--- it's happening in super slow motion.
Like excruciatingly super slow motion.

Losing sucks. I hate losing more than I enjoy winning and that's a character flaw. But when you watch something like this-- something so epically bad that back in the day, they'd write songs about it.......it is a tough pill to swallow.

Teams have "defining" wins and losses all the time. This was a defining loss. And this team either learns from it, recovers, pushes forward and come back to Dallas next year ready to score 28 points each quarter for 4 quarters and completely erase this-- or they wallow in it and it ruins their season and possibly career.

1 - Anthony Cook is our best rusher off the edge. He has a 91.2 grade in pass rush. Next up with more than 50 snaps is Ojomo...with a 71.8 grade. Not good. Oh yeah...Cook is a CB converted to the STAR position or whatever PK calls it. It's a hybrid player that can play in all 3 facets of defense. That is a terrific movement of a player by the coaches. For me, Cook has been our best defensive player this year. This also furthers the point El Diablo made for #1

2 - Missed tackle percentages - Jerrin Thompson is missing tackles at a 29.7% clip. He is one of the secondary players you're talking about. Overshown and Brock at 19.7 and 18.9 respectively. Schooler at 18.2. Foster at 14.6. Not good. Our supposed best corner has a passer rating against of 156.3. Holy shit that's bad.

Receivers catch 3 of 4 passes again Jamison and Josh Thompson. They catch 2 of 3 against Jerrin Thompson and Dunn. And believe it or not, guess who the best pass defender has been this year...BJ Foster.

3 - I told a buddy of mine that the reason they run misdirection so much is to give the shitty OL a little help. They might be the worst unit in all of D1 college football. Suprisingly, Kerstetter has been serviceable in pass pro. He has only allowed 1 sack, but has allowed 8 hurries and 9 pressures. He is graded as 81.8 in pass pro. That is where it ends for the good news. Next starter ranked is Angilau at 59.7...it gets much worse from there.

As far as zone blockers vs. gap blockers this unit is much higher ranked as zone blockers. This means they get their ass whipped if they're asked to down block and not work as a group. Big yikes. Okafor is the highest rated at 78.2 then Angilau at 77, Karic at 68.7, Kerstetter 60.2, Jones at 58.2.

In summary -- they aren't very good and aren't very tough respective to their opponents. I hate saying that because I'm sure they're nice kids, but damnit...have some pride.

Point 4 and 5 and the rest of your post I agree. These are good coaches trying to coach the bad out of these kids that have infected them from previous regimes.

I'm not too surprised about Overshown yesterday was the first time I saw him out here being a difference maker. At least in the first half. He's still a great athlete but he's raw. I was hoping he'd be the difference maker.

To me Overshown is more of a box safety than he is a true LB. He's playing a little out of place right now but that is due in part to us being thin at LB. NFL scouts love guys like him in today's game.

It's a depth issue. The defense is not horrible early in the game. They tire out in the second half and have no depth. Our dbs cannot win 50/50 balls.

It's not even like they were in poor position on those 2 long passes the other day. They just don't have good ball skills. If they turn their head on those 2 plays that an easy PBU of interception.

Or push the guy out of bounds

Hence why I would really like to see a 3-2-6 defense. Players like Cook, Overshown, Foster, Owens, Adimora, and Schooler would have the freedom to just run to the football. They can all play hybrid and line up in any of the 3 levels on D. Confuse the OL protections, the QB reads, etc. And let your LBs be LBs. You still have 5 in the box and can bring a 6th or 7th if needed.

It's a scheme that has essentially two hybrid players so it could look like anything from a 4-3, 3-4, 3-3, 3-2 standpoint. The hybrid players would just need to be good decision makers and good alley players. That's a tall ask, but shit, what we're doing so far ain't working. At least it gets more speed on the field.

We would still have the ability to matchup if the opposing team play 11, 12, 13, 21, or 22 personnel by bringing on beef on DL or strong side LB types (Davis, Thornton, Sweat, Warren, etc. on DL and Hullaby, Ford, Gbenda at the LB position).
