We all have implicit bias, and that's a subtle type of prejudice that isn't going to go away. So people who "cry racism on everything" are closer to the truth.
We don't all show or apply overt racism on a personal basis. Some of us are convinced we never do, and yet we do. "I'm the least racist person you'll ever meet," blah, blah, blah. Again, with overt racism, the former are closer to the truth.
As for systemic racism, that's a bigger thing than I can judge. Does it occur a lot? The stats from police departments say yes. But, yeah, people do jump to the racism argument pretty easily sometimes, when they just weren't up to the job, were causing problems on their own, etc. It comes down to statistics instead of anecdotes.

I don't know if these individuals had prior arrest records or if they were model citizens but I do know their lives are fixing to change forever over something so easily avoidable.
I really don't like to have to lock threads, but it's the same one or two posters who think they're going to convince others how "wrong they are", and never will BTW, and try to stir the pot with claims of racial bias and political comments. Geez, you would think by now they'd get it. 
With all due respect, MM, you might take in the look in the mirror of your own biases. This thread would've gone on indefinitely with no complaints from you had it just been the conservative voices you agree with. It's just when a differing opinion chimes in that you take issue. You say no political threads but that's not entirely true. Just sayin.

I'll admit that sometimes its difficult to refrain from what you believe in politically, morally, religiously, etc, but it has been made clear that political views are against the rules here on OB. No one is going to change the other person's view, regardless of the way that you feel about things and how strongly that you try to state your opinion. It only leads to arguments, insults, ego and finger pointing, which is why it's a good thing to keep politics off of the board.

It was a horrible racist hate crime. But we won't be burning down our neighborhoods looting toilet paper and 40's from the nearest corner store. We behave civilized manner and let the courts handle the justice.

These 4 need a hell of a lot more than a butt whooping. They can lock the animals up for life or put a bullet in the back of their heads. Either works for me.
All races do dumb shit. Saying white people don't burn or loot is not totally true. I've seen cars, couches and trash burn for wininng an NC. Maynot be for the same reason but it is the same stupidity.
I don't know if I would call this a hate crime cause it will then digress into what is/isn't a hate crime.
It is a crime of meanness, cruelty towards another human being. I see three immature, ignorant, 18 year olds who just now are starting to realize the enormity of their crime. And of course there was the 24 year old lets not leave her out. As always the first one to talk is the one who will get the best deal. The other three will spend at least the next 40 years of their lives in prison. And they will deserve it.
Although I did nothing remotely close to what these kids did, I did some terrible things when I was that age I didn't realize what a bad thing it was until later. Those kids are going to have a long time to mull over what they did.

You may want to back out of this statement bell. Unless you are just trying to be funny (which it is not) then you and I and everybody on this board knows that crime will still happen...shootings will still happen after Jan 20.
I don't know if I'm one of "the same one or two posters," but I want to say this... I know I won't always convince others, but I'd like to think that if they (i.e., those with whom I disagree) were to make a damn good argument, that I'd be open-minded enough to consider it. That may sound naive to people who think everyone is cut-and-dried and in separate silos, only to remain in them, but I know that I've made a significant change on the abortion issue since turning 50. <del>There's hope for us all</del>. Nix that. There's hope for anyone willing to reconsider.
Barring one type of discussion is silly, IMO. Everything is a part of life, and the things that are forbidden to discuss are always the most important things. We ought to be able to discuss politics and religion as mature adults, while showing respect to others. At least until the trolls arrive. Longhorns are known for respecting diversity, except when it's connected with maroon or crimson.
