I was going through some recent interviews on my digital recorder and came across former Texas coach Mack Brown’s Q&A session from Tom Herman’s press conference. Some of you may have seen bits and pieces of his interviews, but here are a few quotes worth sharing on a slow day:

Brown on why he thinks Herman will be successful

“I think his passion. His passion for people. Football is not all about what we think it’s about. It’s about people. Football is very simple. People are complicated. What you got to do is take all the complicated people and get them in one room and make them all play better than they can, make them feel good about themselves, make them earn the right, and then you have to figure out who to hand it to, and who to pitch it to, how many ways to get it to them, how to line up on defense, and that’s much easier than getting the guys in order. If they trust you and believe in you, the rest of it works."

Here is Brown’s advice to Herman

“What I will give Tom is you earned the right to do this job, so you do what you think is best. I will tell him exactly what I told Charlie. I’m out of the way. If you need me, you call me. If you call me and ask me direction questions, I’m going to give you direct answers, but I’m not going to be in his way, and I’m not going to be around a lot.”

Brown on if he knew Herman would be successful while on his staff

"You don’t know at 99. When he’s that young in 99 and 2000, you’re not sure. You’re not sure what path he’ll take. He could have been successful in business. He could have been a CEO. He could have been successful as a high school coach. You’re not sure about a young guy making no money. Michelle (Tom's wife) was making all the money. That’s the only reason it could work. That’s what I hugged her neck for. This is because of you, not because of him, and she laughed. What he’s done is what I tried to do which is take a piece of everybody’s he’s worked for, put it back into your personality. You see some things you like that people do, and you see some things you’re not going to do. That helps with you with both, and he’s worked really, really hard, and he’s earned his way to this position. It’s not, 'I’ll get a couple of great jobs and all of sudden you’re at the University of Texas.' This guy has worked really, really hard and earned the right to be here. Coach (Darrell K) Royal told me one time don’t ever hire a coach, or sign a player at this place, unless he’s earned the right. Tom’s earned that right."

Brown’s response when asked if Herman has what it takes to win a national championship

“I think he does. I was asked that same thing by Tom Hicks when I was hired. I said I got to have a lot of help, but I’m being to be okay. I got to have a lot of help. He’s going to need a lot of help, but it’s all out there. He just has to put it all together.”
