Release from UT:
DALLAS, Texas – Junior running back D’Onta Foreman has been named a semifinalist for the 2016 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday. Foreman, who leads the nation averaging 179.2 rushing yards per game, is one of 10 semifinalists.
A native of Texas City, Texas, Foreman has rushed for 1,613 yards through nine games this season. He has eclipsed 100 yards in 11 consecutive games, tying 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell’s record for the most in school history. Despite missing a game early in the season against UTEP, his 1,613 rushing yards rank sixth-most in UT history already and are the second-most through nine games in UT history.
Over the past three games, Foreman has gone on an historic tear. His 758 yards in the last three games are second to just Ricky Williams’ 807 yards during a three-game stretch in his 1998 Heisman Trophy-winning season. He rushed for 341 yards – third-most in school history and the most in the country this season – at Texas Tech, which followed up a 250-yard performance against nationally-ranked Baylor. He is just the third player in UT’s 124-year history, and first since Hodges Mitchell in 2000, to register back-to-back 200 yard games.
During his 11-game, 100-yard streak, Foreman has rushed for 1,917 yards (174.2 ypg) and 16 touchdowns. More impressively, he has averaged over 7.0 yards per carry on 271 attempts during that stretch. He leads the nation with 11 straight 100-yard games and his nine 100-yard games in 2016 are also the most in the country. He has eclipsed 150 rushing yards six times this season. More impressive have been his numbers in the big games, as all nine games this season have come against Power 5 opponents. Against Big 12 Conference opponents, Foreman has averaged 189.3 yards per game with 10 touchdowns. Against ranked foe, he is averaging 176.8 yards per game.
Foreman became the first player at Texas since Jamaal Charles in 2007 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season when he did so against Baylor. He has raced past that mark and has his sights set on Ricky Williams’ school record for rushing yards by a junior (1,893). Foreman has scored a touchdown in seven of nine games this season, totaling 13 on the year with five multi-TD performances. Prior to a game against Kansas State earlier this season, Foreman had scored a touchdown in seven straight games.
Foreman enters Saturday’s game at Kansas, the opponent against which his 100-yard streak began a season ago, with 2,367 career rushing yards. He has scored 18 TDs and has a 6.8 yards per carry career average, tied with Vince Young for the best in school history.
To determine the 2016 finalists, members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes after this week’s games. Three finalists for the award will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast a second vote to select the 2016 award recipient. The 2016 Doak Walker Award recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8 on ESPN.
