Texas Storylines
- True freshman safety Brandon Jones can make all-time Longhorns history today, although it may be a longshot. Jones has blocked punts in back-to-back games. No Texas Longhorn has ever blocked a punt in three straight games. (As a sidenote, it’s been a bit of a drought for punt blocks in Austin, the last one before Jones’ versus UTEP was in 2013 by Carrington Byndom per Texas SID).
- Speaking of Brandon Jones, there has been much discussion of increased involvement for the five-star phenom on defense along with another young player in Deshon Elliott and veteran backup Kevin Vaccaro. Seeing how the splits in the back end of the secondary shake out will be one of the big takeaways from the game.
- Will D’Onta Foreman keep the streak alive? He’s a beast and has rushed for over 100 yards in the last four games he’s suited up to play.
- Who’ll line up at right guard? It’s been mostly Jake McMillon at practice, but Sterlin Gilbert said on Monday that both McMillon and Alex Anderson were in the mix to fill in during Kent Perkins suspension.
- Charlie Strong, in his head coaching career, is 16-8 when his team is coming off a bye week or more than ten days rest (includes season openers and bowl games).
Local Flair: Drunk Diving Discipline Parallels
Here’s an interesting tidbit on this week’s “hot topic” of driving under the influence: Oklahoma State WR Jhajuan Seales (from Port Arthur), was arrested in 2014 for falling asleep in the drive through of a Whataburger after admittedly consuming alcohol, much like Kent Perkins, but Seales was only charged with a P.I.; presumably because he was never actually witnessed operating the vehicle.
In 2015, Seales was again arrested, this time for DWI and open-container, testing nearly twice the legal limit. All this on the night of the 2015 Oklahoma State University homecoming parade-crash tragedy, which was widely thought of as one caused, at least partially, by impairment due to drugs and/or alcohol.
Of course, we came to find that alcohol was not an issue with the driver of the vehicle/murderer of four people (including one surely precious little two-year-old girl). The driver was just insane and suicidal.
But it wasn’t clear at the time, and the community had just been shaken to its very core by the damage and harm that can be done due to irresponsibility behind the wheel of the vehicle. What a horrible look for a football player to be out driving drunk when four people on his campus were killed that day and 46 others injured … in the homecoming festivities his football game was the main event for.
And what a horrible look for Mike Gundy to only suspend Seales for one game … again.
I can tell you one thing for certain - Charlie Strong may have let Kent Perkins off a little easy with a one-game DWI suspension by the standards of some, but one game is the precedent set. You’re a football coach and your job is to win and develop young men and you can’t just throw them away any time they make a mistake.
However, his reaction the second one …
… on that day?
See ya.
Japanese Food in Stillwater?
It just seems a bit strange to me that the consistently highest-rated and ranked food establishment in all of Stillwater is a japanese food place called Tokyo Pot.
Out of 116 restaurants on Trip Advisor, it’s a resounding number one and the comments section is over-the-top with descriptions like
“Japanese food at it’s finest”
“Simply immaculate”
“Words cannot begin to describe the experience”
“I’ve never had this much fun at a restaurant”
What the hell kinda Japanese food place is this?
If anyone goes, let me know how it went and I’ll include your review the next time we convene; because for now we’ve got bigger fish to fry …
THIS. IS. GAME. DAY.
