Get welcome mat ready for 'Horns, OU

A lot of talk is going on at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., most of it about football and scheduling.

Some teams want a nine-game SEC schedule, others want eight so they can get the home-game payday and a win every year.

It may be nothing is determined this week because all the changes that are coming to the SEC are because Texas and Oklahoma are joining in 2025, although indications are it could be earlier since the Big 12 is adding four new teams next season. So why would they want teams who want out of the league hanging around?

Of course there is the issue of money.

According to the Big 12 bylaws, because the schools each made $38 million last fiscal year that’s how much they would owe the conference.

Not that they can’t afford it, but expect a negotiated buyout and the Longhorns and Sooners joining the league sooner than later.

Understand, money is why both schools are leaving.

Those two got a bigger share of the Big 12 revenue pie than the rest of the members, so they wouldn’t be leaving if they weren’t going to make more. Lots more.

Last year, the SEC signed a $3 billion deal with Disney, which owns ABC and ESPN, and if you think that amount didn’t include Texas and Oklahoma being in the SEC you aren’t paying attention.

The SEC was already the most powerful league in the country, and adding those two giants to its footprint just upped the ante big time.

Of course, there are tons of things to work out before the Longhorns and Sooners are competing on the SEC playing fields, but it does seem like the perfect time to realign the conference.

If they stay in two divisions then obviously UT and OU will want to be in the West — they have no idea what it is like to compete with Alabama every year — which makes geographical sense.

Missouri should be in the West, too, but the simplest solution, and the one that would seem the best for the majority, would be to stay in the East. However, two teams would need to slide toward the sunrise, and what two better to do that than Alabama and Auburn.

The West would have recruiting rich Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU.

The East would have Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Auburn who are in fertile recruiting areas.

That is just a suggestion that most likely will be ignored.

The SEC will continue discussions this week about the future of the league, including schedules, but there is no rush.

Heck, very few even knew Commissioner Greg Sankey was negotiating with Disney until after the deal was done.

I think now that the new big 12 teams have a firm date and there is a new commissioner coming in I expect a deal to get reached pretty quick. There is no real upside for the big 12 or Texas and OU to keep this up

The aggy AD is already saying that the next a&m vs Texas football game will played in collie station. Wait, he's in charge of scheduling? And the last meeting was in collie station.
Seems to me it should be in Austin. 🤘

My guess is the SEC promised them that as a way to smooth things over.

Supposedly the SEC is trying to decide between a schedule format that has two rivalry games that occur yearly or 3 rivalry games.

so if it’s two you’d have to think it’s OU and A&M.

if it’s 3 it’s OU, A&M and maybe like Arkansas?

I understand that when it does happen, OU and Texas will get a smaller tv share than the rest of the secsecsec teams.........for how long?

That would be a brutal pod. It would be the strongest in the SEC. Another pod will likely get Missouri and Kentucky in the same pod if this happens, weak.

Texas
Ou
Mizz
Ark

Aggy
LSU
Miss St
Miss

Bama
Auburn
Vandy
Tenn

Florida
Kentucky
S Car
UGA

I could go for the pod of tex, ou, aggie, and piggy though. It would be fun!!

What about the 8 conference game schedule vs the 9? I like the above format which would set up a nice 4 game playoff for the championship. Anyway, the 8 game conference schedule has appeal as well. It keeps the teams fresher without the extra conference game and allows for more bowl teams.... Will bowls be a thing in the future or are they going away?

With our showing in certain sports I think we are more than ready to face this sec sec football will get there. And I hate to say it but blowu in some sports can hold their own as well.

They aren’t doing “pods” I don’t know why people keep coming up with that BS

Well, one option under consideration is a 9 game sec schedule with 3 teams played each year. Not referred to as pods, but sure looks like a pod system

They aren’t doing “pods” officially, but they are discussing having two rivalry games which would effectively create “pods”

1-7 no divisions . 1 permanent rival, 7 rotating They will not go to 9 games

Just got off of the phone with a good friend of mine who has lots of good sources. He said that Greg Sankey has announced that the SEC will be going to nine conference games in 2023. Also the SEC has told Texas that they will pay their Big 12 exit fee and want Texas to join the SEC beginning in 2023. Texas would pay the fee back over three years, which will be deducted from their SEC conference cut. The conference structure will be determined by the university presidents, not Sankey. It will be either divisions or pods, but nothing has been decided at this point.

That's very interesting they would pay our exit fee, but I can see why with all the damn revenue we bring in and all the Nattys we have won recently. So when you say 2023 are you meaning this fall school year 22-23 or next fall 23-24 school year?

The TV contracts are set for school years. Starts August 1st and end July 31st. The early admittance is an exclusive deal for Texas. The SEC will deal with the odd number of teams for a year or two. OU does not want to pay the early exit penalty to the Big 12 and move to the SEC early.

I always assumed the exit fee would come from ESPN. They are going to have to settle up with Texas on LHN and I just assumed that would be part of whatever deal they cut. Seems like a win/win for both sides.

OU getting cold feet?

No. Apparently they don't want to pay the early exit penalty, which is pretty steep.
They don’t want to pay the exit fee, and yet by all accounts they are the ones who initiated all this…. Good job fellas

LHN will be absorbed by SECN so that may be the out that ESPN needs to avoid paying out the deal

I get that but I’d imagine they are still going to owe something. Even with an opt out there is sometimes a cost

with the AAC schools moving to the big 12 next season and a new commissioner coming in I imagine this gets worked out where they both can move to the SEC in 2023

There is a deal in the works to televise every SEC football game over the air rather than streaming. They are also going to add more SEC channels. Example; on DirecTV the SEC channel is 611. They also have 611-1 and 611-2. There will be more of those types of extensions added.

Yeah, and it will be that much easier to win hollow conference championships without Texas.

As an OU fan I'm good with it, we've got to get our recruiting in order imo
That’s the thing, and has been my point from get go about who knows where things will be once we get to the SEC. When the move was announced OU had made the CFP, was bringing in top recruits, and had a great coach. They looked like they were in a way better position than Texas was.

Fast forward a couple years Texas is bringing in the top recruits, OU has a lot of questions and UT might be in a slightly better spot than OU is.

Ha well we got our butts beat by BU, OSU and were damn near beat by 4 or 5 others last year so Venables has alot of shoring up to do but I think he and Lebby will prove fully capable

Venables is a step down from Riley. You don't want to admit it, but deep down you know it's true. No way OU duplicates the same success that Riley had under Venables.
