Cliffs notes: As Texas fans rolled out of bed this morning, they said their prayers for offensive linemen. Well, College of San Mateo (San Meteo, California) offensive tackle Mikey Grandy answered some of those Longhorn prayers when he announced he signed with Texas.
Rankings: Grandy, who has four years to play three at Texas, is rated as a three-star prospect with a 5.6 Rivals Rating.
Key offers: UCLA was the main competition for Texas, and Grandy also held offers from Arizona State, Louisville, and others.
Evaluation: Grandy looks every bit of the 6-5, 315 pounds he’s listed at with thick legs, and a strong frame. It’s not a surprise that he plays with strength, and can drive defenders when he gets his hands on them, especially at the second level. Texas coaches won’t have to encourage Grandy to play through the whistle. They might have to encourage him not to take it too far.
On tape, he shows nice usage of his hands and feet that could probably pass at tackle. With this size, strength, and a little lack of length, I think he profiles best at guard, but could profile at both tackle and guard spots if desperately needed like Derek Kerstetter this season.
Basically, Grandy looks physically ready to contribute, and shows the type of technique, movement, and motor on tape to compete for early playing time.
Enjoy:
What this means for Texas: The Longhorns need offensive linemen. The Longhorns need offensive linemen that could push to contribute immediately. Grandy checks both those boxes.
