I don't know if Tom Herman's team saved its coach on Saturday night.
There's a lot of a season left to play and this is just a step in a multi-level step process that the Longhorns will have to complete to likely save Herman's job.
However, for one night in Stillwater, you have to give Herman and his team a lot of credit because beating Oklahoma State in overtime on. Saturday was gutsy and grimy to say the very least. I'm not sure that the Longhorns played well, as much as they just refused to quit the fight. Ever.
Despite mistake after mistake, this team just kept playing its guts out, which feels like the best compliment one can give Herman and his staff tonight.
The offense never played at a consistent high level. The defense struggled with Tylan Wallace all night. The penalties (13 for 142 yards) were obscene.
Hell, Sam didn't even play remotely well.
But, Joseph Ossai and the entire Texas defensive line played one of the best games from this unit in a decade. D'Shawn Jamison had a game-saving kickoff return for the Longhorns that reminded of Jordan Shipley against Oklahoma in 2008. Oh, and the Texas defense just kept making big plays.
Add it all up... Texas was a deserving winner. It was sloppy as hell, but it's still a road win against the No.6 team in the country. It also included a comeback after halftime, which teams under Herman never do.
It almost doesn't make sense, except that it's 2020 and it makes perfect sense.
(Other thoughts on the game).
* Ossai was as good in this game as any defensive player I've seen in a Texas uniform since Derrick Johnson. 12 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble only kind of tell the story of his performance. That young man made some money with this performance.
* I can't give the Texas defensive line enough credit for its performance. It stopped the run all game and was a hell on wheels pass rushing monster all game. THIS was the performance we've been waiting to see from this group.
* The Ta'Quan Graham truthers can take a bow. He was excellent at times tonight.
* Sam Ehlinger had a 123.8 game rating on the road and the Longhorns won? I can't believe it. It's important to note that he wasn't good for. much of this game, but he made some monster plays in the fourth quarter and overtime, which is about the most Sam Ehlinger thing you can write in 2020.
* Throw Joshua Moore the damn football!!!!
* Jake Smith had a redemption performance tonight. Attaboy, Jake. I was ready to scoot him off the field when he had a key third-down drop early in the game,
* Chris Ash's unit deserved to win. Ash deserves a game ball, especially when you consider that OSU had three long touchdown drives fairly early in the game.
* Tylan Wallace is awesome.
* I've been waiting for a team to pay for kicking the ball to D'Shawn Jamison all season and in the third quarter with his team down by 11, he made Oklahoma State pay dearly.
* That was a weak penalty called all him after the touchdown., Very weak.
* Ryan Bujcevski catching a high snap on the 40-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter was a 3 point save. Big hold and a big kick from Cameron Dicker. Bujcevski deserves a game ball. He was awesome all night long.
* What Spencer Sanders did to Juwan Mitchell in the second quarter in a one on one situation in space is illegal is 37 states. Oklahoma is not one of those states Still, Mitchell played a pretty damn good game over four quarters. He's playing better, football folks.
* Sam Ehlinger to Brennan Eagles down the seam on a vertical. I don't know what that's not a staple of this offense.
* The offense getting off to a really slow start had a lot to do with Ehlingrer starting the game 1 of 5 for 10 yards in the first 10+ minutes of the game.
* I really don't have words for Derek Kerstetter snapping the ball to a ghost quarterback, which basically killed a drive, but I do have words for penalties that also stall drives because it puts the offense off-schedule... they can't happen. Kerstetter is not having a good season and today wasn't a good game.
* Oklahoma State handing the ball to Jacoby Jones in the first quarter was a play to remember with 55 minutes to go. Without those sloppy turnovers by the Cowboys, the Longhorns might have been down by three scores.
* Third and four on the second series of the game with the team down 7-0... Jake Smith has to catch that ball. There's no reason to be on the field with the stakes this high if you're not going to catch that ball.
* Josh Thompson is my guy, but hoo-boy, he had a tough day before going out with an injury.
* I'm not sure why the coaches believe Cade Brewer is the second coming of Tony Gonzales, but they really wanted him in the passing game down the field tonight. It didn't work.
* Jared Wiley wasn't involved enough tonight, which is weird when you consider how much they featured Brewer.
* Roschon Johnso. earned some trust tonight. That was a big second half performance.
