Video of Joe Mixon punching woman is public record, state Supreme Court rules

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — The video showing Joe Mixon punching a young woman in the face is a public record and a copy of that record should be provided according to the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

The court ruled the video that the City of Norman withheld, claiming it was not an arrest record, is in fact a public record as the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters argued. FOX 25 is a member of the OAB.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the city failed to address a key claim when Judge Thad Balkman put the video in the court record. That failure meant that the fact the video is also a court record is now undisputable.

In addition, the justices wrote that the Oklahoma Open Records Act does require copying of the video. A large number of media members were allowed to view the video at the Norman Police Department, but no copies were provided. The city claimed the law only allowed for inspection. However justices said they are “compelled to define the public’s right to inspect a record as including their right to obtain a copy.”

The OAB sued for the video in February 2015. The suit was originally dismissed before heading to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. In February 2016, a court of civil appeals judge ruled the video was public record but the City of Norman refused to release the video. Certain members of the media were allowed to view the tape in September 2014.

Mixon entered an Alford plea in October 2014 and served probation and 100 hours of community service. He was also suspended for a season.

yea....but now we get to see if its true what the sooners have been saying - that she started it and deserved to have her face crushed in.

we call it Cleveland county justice
and doing the broad cast thay ask what is a sooner? and they replied "cheaters"?

Good ruling by the court. Looks like the actual release will likely be delayed until mid January.

It's unclear, however, if the video will be immediately released. One Norman city official said an appeal for a re-hearing of the ruling remains possible, which could delay release of the video until at least January 2017. link

I wonder if the city of norman would fight this hard to suppress a video of a criminal if they were a everyday citizen. I wonder how much they are spending to fight this.

My prediction is that Joe Mixon will play his last game in the Sugar Bowl on Jan 2nd. He's been there three years and that's how long you have to be in school before you can declare for the NFL draft.

He got there in 2014 and right after he got there was when he hit that coed, they didn't kick him out of school they suspended him for a year. OK had their worst team of the Stoops era in '14. Instead of giving him the time he deserved to rebuild, they got mad and imo, Bob Stoops panicked and decided to bring Mixon back. After all he was the crown jewel of the recruiting class. But the thing was they didn't need him because Samaje Perine became a star. They had other good rb's as well. Stoops should have told the fans hey I missed in recruiting I need a couple of recruiting classes and we'll be back. I've won a nc and a bunch of Big XII titles for you just chill out for a year.

But he didn't. And you know from a pr standpoint there has been so much media attention to Art Briles and Baylor that OK in comparison has gotten off light.

I'm not saying Mixon handled the situation in the best way, but if we are just going by the law here how should this be viewed? She slapped and spit on Mixon ( along with racial slurs) and retaliated with a punch ( which as big as he is did damage to a much smaller person). Forget what he should have done, what she should have done, etc. I'm asking according to the law is she just as much at fault or more so for the altercation?

Second part is as Texas fans what would have been a sufficient punishment? Banned from college forever? Did you want prison time? 100 lashes? Lol. I'm just asking guys

So one bad decision ( it was really stupid) you feel he should be kicked out of college and sent to prison? Ok. That's your opinion. Little do you feel she was at fault in any way?

He should have I agree. We all make idiotic choices. I'm just not sure prison time for this is the right Decision lol. I think that's excessive.

Keep being you. Never change.

Are you kidding? I believe perhaps she should be held accountable also, but at the very least that POS should have been dismissed from the team. If you don't think this is a stain on your program you are an idiot.

There is a second video????? Picklemans withheld evidence? Supposedly the second video show just about everything that happened and backs up the girls story.

“Unfortunately, the decision to attempt to intervene in the OAB case was twisted by some people to further a false narrative wherein Mia supposedly spit on, punched and hurled racial slurs at a cornered man,” Molitor attorneys, Ben Baker and Rusty Smith, said in a statement released to The Oklahoman. They called that narrative false and said “one could conclude that Mia — and the truth — would be well served by the public disclosure of the video of the punch.”

But the attorneys say they have analyzed the other Pickleman's video, which depicts the same time frame from another angle of the restaurant.

“It is our belief that allowing the public to view only a snippet of the events of that night — the punch and the seconds leading up to it from one angle — does not begin to tell the entire story of that night,” the attorneys said. “Both videos from the restaurant, along with the police reports, witness statements and recorded interviews will end the speculation and false narratives about Mia, they will address all of the pertinent events of that night, and they will allow the full truth to be known. Unfortunately, if the single video of the punch is released now and to the media, the court of public opinion will receive and review evidence before a jury does. Not only could this undermine the integrity of the ongoing federal civil cases, it would also be an incomplete presentation of evidence.”

I've made bad choices in my life some could call them idiotic BUT what I have NEVER done is broken a woman's jaw because she called me a name. I've been slapped as well and yet some how I made it through life without rearranging a woman's face. So let's say some man came up to you and just straight knocked you out and broke your jaw. Not one ounce of you would want him to go to jail for a few months? How about if it was your daughter, mother, sister?

The spitting is B.S., I believe. Mixon's statement, as quoted in the press, doesn't say that anyone spit on him. I'm guessing Sooners made that up to try to defend his actions. (And not that spitting would justify what he did.)

Amelia Molitor did slap him, after he lunged at her with a clenched fist. Before that she shoved him away. The account makes it sound like he was getting up in her face, daring her to react. A slap, though, isn't usually used to defend one's space. It tends to follow a crude insult. Something that a woman finds really offensive. She claims he used an anti-homosexual slur against one of her friends.

We'll learn more when the video is made public, but NewsOK reporters claim he threw a right hook into her jaw, knocking her literally off her feet. Airborne. Her head hits a table as she goes down to the floor. He flees the scene, while she's still motionless for half a minute. Then she tries to get to her feet, and she staggers and then sits. Her friends try to control the blood flow with napkins.

Mixon's account is that "someone" uttered a racial slur. He didn't say it was before the punch, though, and he didn't claim Amelia Molitor said it. It could have been as he was fleeing, or it could have been what set him off.

A slap from a woman is not going to be a big deal to most men. It's not going to cause him to fear for his safety, or have nightmares, or suffer from anxiety or other PTSD symptoms. It's not even going to leave a mark, probably. So it doesn't make sense to equate their actions.

The OU hate for this Sooner (Ms. Molitor) is just sad. It reminds me of Penn State hate for the coach who reported things. We should NEVER, NEVER defend Longhorns who hurt others. Never. Don't make excuses for them. Don't pretend it's not a big deal. Don't blame the victim. Don't suggest that they deserved it.

I assume that you think kids that play the knockout game made poor choices and that punishing them would be excessive too.

The sad part about this whole situation is not the incident at the restaurant. It's the appearance that Mixon's lawyer, the Norman Criminal Justice System, and gooner colluded to try and protect the assailant because he plays football for OU.

I'm willing to give Mixon one more game to try to earn my forgiveness, but he's going to have to leave it all on the field before I'll even consider.

Tiger that was an ignorant and immature response. We are all adults so let's try and conduct ourselves a tad better while discussing topics. No one is acting as though it's no big deal or that he didnt deserve punishment.

If Mixon were are reserve DB or sum such, he would have been kicked off of the team. Sadly, Stoops kept him and "gave him another chance", because he "deserved a second chance". Of course, it had absolutely nothing to do with how good of a RB he is.
