Cosmi, Ossai named AP All-Americans

Junior OL Samuel Cosmi and junior JACK Josesph Ossai were named All-Americans by the Associated Press on Monday.

AUSTIN, Texas –
Texas Football junior offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi and junior JACK Joseph Ossai were named to the Associated Press’ 2020 All-America teams on Monday. Cosmi earned third-team honors, while Ossai was a first-team selection. It is the first career All-America honor by one of the five recognized publications (AFCA, AP, FWAA, Sporting News, WCFF) for both.

Cosmi, a team captain, started the first eight games of the season. In that time he led the team in total first down/touchdown blocks (25), total knockdown blocks (28) and total intimidation/dominant blocks (12). Entering his last appearance of the season, he had allowed only one QB hit, one tackle for loss and one sack on the year. Cosmi was part of an offensive line that helped Texas average 41.3 points per game, the fourth-best scoring average in school history. He blocked for an offense that averaged 6.36 yards per play, the seventh-best mark on UT record and helped Texas post two 60-point games (63 at Texas Tech, 69 at Kansas State). It was the first time since 2005 that Texas recorded multiple 60-point outings in a season. The Longhorns averaged 5.0 yards per carry and scored 18 rushing touchdowns this season behind Cosmi and the offensive line. Cosmi played a part in helping senior QB Sam Ehlinger (112 yards vs. Oklahoma) and true freshman RB Bijan Robinson (113 yards vs. West Virginia) each record a 100-yard outing with him on the line.

In addition to being selected as an AP All-American on Monday, Cosmi was also recognized as a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection and earned honorable mention as the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year from the league’s coaches last month.

Ossai served as a team captain and started all nine games of the regular season for the Longhorns. In that time, he recorded 55 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss – the most in the Big 12 and second-most nationally at the end of the regular season – five sacks, three forced fumbles, one recovery, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries. Ossai recorded a tackle for loss in eight of nine games that he played in this season, including matching his career high with six TFLs in a road win over then-No. 6 Oklahoma State. That night, Ossai totaled 12 tackles, six tackle for loss, three sacks, forced a fumble and recovered one to help the Longhorns earn their first road win over a top-10 team since 2010. He sealed the win by sacking OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders on fourth down in overtime, and in doing so became the first Power Five player to recorded at least 12 tackles, six TFLs and three sacks in a game since Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh in the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game.

In addition to being selected as a first-team All-American by the AP, Ossai has also been recognized as a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and a first-team All-Big 12 selection this season. He also earned honorable mention from the league’s coaches as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Cosmi and Ossai are the fourth and fifth Longhorns to earn All-America honors from one of the five recognized publications under head coach Tom Herman. They join 2017 honorees Michael Dickson (unanimous/first team), DeShon Elliott (consensus/first team) and Malik Jefferson in that group.
