Official Longhorn vs Purple Wizard thread

I’ve come to the realization that the last 8 years have sucked. Therefore, I’m happy Texas held on. These guys are trying to learn how to win again. Eventually they will find consistency in their play. But when is the last time we were 4-1 and in the top 20?
Agreed. We didn't play great. I was hoping for a blowout so we could get a backup QB in for the 4th Q. Our offense stalled out in the second half, despite having elite playmakers. But we did what we had to do to win. We stopped them on 3rd down when we needed to, and we ran out the clock. The past 4 years we would have messed that up. Progress for us, but still not dominating teams we should.

"Texas put their foot on Kstate’s throat when purple had all the momentum.

Say what you want about the rest of the game up to that point, but THAT is what a championship team does."

I apologize in advanced if you are still drunk.
TEXAS did not put their foot on K-States throat......period. A really good team doesnt have to sweat out a late rally from a team that was down 19-0 at the half.....a really good team comes out after halftime and puts up a couple of more scores to put that game out of reach....period. THAT is what a championship team does.

Sam was 29/36 and drove the ball down the field on the last drive and killed all the momentum KState had. How in the hell can you say a kid that hasn’t played a snap of college football is better than Sam is right now. All I know is I had a feeling that was gonna be a tough grind it out game and it was. We got the win and are 4-1 going into the RRS.

Hell I remember the year Vince had to convert a 4th and 29 against Kansas on the road to secure the win. Everybody just needs to relax and enjoy being 4-1, because there is a lot of people on here that I remember saying we could easily be 1-4 going into the RRS.

You’re using “drove the ball downfield” very loosely. He’s a tough kid, but can’t hit the broad side of a barn. 29 completions for 200 yards = dink and dunk. How many of those completions were swing passes? Look, I’m happy we’re 4-1 but our offense scored 1 touchdown against a bad KState team.

Sam is merely a pour man’s Tebow. We know Tebow cannot pass & Sam is not as good as Tebow. Sam is a crappy down field passer & relies heavily on short pass completions. He missed wide open WR that are 6’6” tall. That is hard to do.

Hey, a new member with some common sense and perspective! Welcome aboard!

Does everyone forget how bad we suck when playing at Kansas St. I’ll take that win all day. They might look like crap against everyone else but when they play us at home they’re a different team.

This. We played two big games back to back before this and won them. We posted this was a trap/letdown scenario earlier this week. First time we've won @ KSU in over 15 years.

I get that, but over the course of the last 8 years, including the worst 4 year stretch in our history, I’m satisfied they’re figuring out how to win. Yes it is frustrating to watch the O struggle but consistency will come with confidence. The confidence is building with every win.

The unfortunate thing is that one bad loss or a blowout will take a lot of that away.

I haven't gone through this whole thread but HOW does KState not get 1 penalty but we get 10 for 104 yards! I'll never understand how a team doesn't get a penalty in a game this isn't a perfect game and they're no perfect teams.

I always wonder if the refs go back and review the penalties given and say "Shit we kind of made that obvious".
My experience with refs is absolutely not. Don't give a gee whiz. Hate a team? Do your best to screw them without losing your job. Sleep well at night.

I saw at least one missed face mask grab on K State. The stats are misleading because there was one penalty called against them, but it was negated by one called against us. Then again, K State prides themselves on playing penalty free.

Just curious to how anyone knows Rising is ready? Did he get on the field and play an actual game yet?

No, which is why everyone thinking that he is undoubtedly better than Sam is crazy. Herman is playing the QB he thinks will give them the best chance to win, but the back up QB is always the fan favorite.

Because he is new and hasn't made a poor read on the field yet, Duhhhhh. Mock, Gilbert, Ash, Heard, Swoopes, Boo & Sammy we're already Heisman winners before they touched the field and it will be Risings turn next. C'mon, get with the program!

The ncaa, as a form of education, reviews many games and offers a critique to refs. I don't know if it's EVERY game, but I do know this happens and I also know that at the beginning of every season the team is made to watch a video compiled by the ncaa showing various penalties being committed-- some are egregious penalties, in order to let athletes know how things will be called for the upcoming season. It's like a highlight reel of bad calls.

One play Sam was diving into the line on the left side and a KSU defender came up and struck Sam's helmet square in the left earhole with the crown of his helmet.....I was certain of 2 things...Sam was surely concussed and the defender would be flagged for targeting....nothing.....How in hell could that happen?

swing pass???...I was unaware Sam completed any of those except the 2 where the RB was already in the grasp when the ball got there. The others he simply over threw the RB....How in hell do you miss a guy 15 feet from you?

I appreciate that Sam is a gamer but it concerns me that he is the best QB that we have. I also give Sam much credit for taking care of the ball. I am really scared the defenders will learn to play off the receivers because that is where the ball is going.

At this point, dance with the one that brung ya. Sam has the confidence and momentum and the team behind him. He has the most experience and comfort. That's why Sam continues to play, even if his ceiling isn't as high as someone like CR. It would be nice to be at a point in the 4th quarter of a game where we are comfortably ahead and we can play CR (or less my preference, Shane) and get him some game reps. Had we kept up the pace at Kansas State and it was 29-0 after 3, I'm sure we would have seen him. But there simply hasn't been an opportunity yet this entire season for another QB to get some meaningful playing time. Maybe at home against Baylor in 2 weeks...

oh, I agree....you absolutely have to go with Sam. I am just not buying into the idea that he is a good QB
I would agree that he's not "great." But I think the way he's performed this year qualifies as "good." He's doing what he needs to do. He's efficient enough. He is taking care of the ball. He has passed over 200 yards in every game. He's getting yards on the ground when he must. It's the most consistent QB play we have had in a long time.

Is he great? No, not really. He's not on any Heisman watch lists. Could he progress and become great? Maybe. Probably not. Sometimes QBs get a lot better, but most of the time -- what you see is what you get. It will be interesting to see what Herman does next year with a full year of development under Cameron/Casey vs an upperclassman Sam.

I think Shane is probably done after this year. There's no reason for him to compete next year against that group. I like him and I appreciate his loyalty, but he should fight for his 4 games on eligibility this year and he should transfer and spend 2 years QB'ing a team like Tulsa or Houston.

I sat and analyzed the game. Re watched and rewatched. Observation of what is the main issues of the team.
1) QB play has been spotty throughout the season but he looked very bad on missing wide open players. Especially the miss TD to Duv. If he can't perform, we have a solid back up who actually can throw a lot better. He's not a good runner but pass, yes.
2) COACHING play is not great. I looked at ever game thus far and we are scripted on our first drive. We went away from things that do work for the team. Targeting the big WR's and using Ingram. The KSU and Tulsa games were the same way. We didn't put our foot down on offense.

In order for our boys to win. We need better QB play. We NEED to start Ingram. He has been averaging over 6 yards per carry. Yet he doesn't get that many touches due to the transfer kid, which is a good player but the fish is way better. Has a great burst and the best vision I've seen from a fish in a long time. OL - I'm sorry to say this but the OL didn't look that good against KSU and the reason why? Shackleford. When he has been out, the OL look great.
Maybe it's me over analyzing things but that's what I see from watching these boys.

Well, we need one of the young ones to take over next year. 2018, 2019... Doesn't matter which recruiting class. I don't expect that to happen earlier.
Sam's going to make me regret that post, it looks like. Good.

The young ones are going to have a tough time, wresting leadership of this team from Sam Ehlinger. They believe in him, even if his long ball is sometimes scary-inaccurate.

I'm right there with you. Still need to see better accuracy, and hope he can keep this up, but that blackbird jambalaya is tasting pretty good so far.

Also, if Tom and this offense can do this for Sam, the future is bright with guys like Thompson and Roschon.
