***Official TEXAS vs Up Your Funnel Iowa St*** thread

Compared to who? Somehow tcu, okie light and tech have higher rated LBs? There 3* are better than our 4*. Or does Texas need 5* to beat everybody else’s 3*and4*?
Did you watch the OSU and TCU game… wasn’t much defense played in that game… not sure they are who we should be comparing our defense too lol

Baylor had 3 defensive guys drafted in the first 3 rounds last season. None of which were rated higher than a 3 star coming out of high school. They are all 3 starting or playing significant snaps as a rookie. It's just frustrating seeing other teams in the conference do more with lesser talent. I feel this offensive staff is doing a good job of developing talent but i'm still unsure of the defensive staff.

Do you think Baylor is better at recruiting or developing talent or are they better at taking players that may be questionable? I don’t know any personal story about any of these Baylor players to whom you refer so I may be way off base but I feel Texas coaches, university leadership and BOR are focused on recruiting stud athletes that are individuals that are of certain character and intellectual acumen. Unless you are literally a 5* phenomenon then you better bring more to the table than your skill and 3* ranking.

I’m just saying that the last decade we have not done a very good job at developing talent. Schools like Ok. State and Baylor are doing more with less.

Jaylin Ford (LB) named B12 DPOTW

He still has a lot to learn in coverage though. But damn, the growth in his vision, fits and explosiveness from last year is nice to see
With another year he’ll turn into an NFL player I think. Just the jump from last year to this year is enough to make me think that.

I wouldn't call them less because in reality a lot of their players are better than ours. Recruiting rankings are not always correct. They find the guys that have been looked over, didn't go to all the camps, or are late developers. Either way they are talented players which is why the NFL takes them. Kids develop at different rates and I think some recruits get the high ranking when they are freshman or sophomores because they have matured and developed and get labeled a blue chip because they are at that point. Others develop when they are seniors in high school but have already been labeled as a 3 star or unranked and don't get re-ranked. At the end of they day they are similar players when they get to be a sophomore in college.

Numbers show that star rankings do matter though. 63% of 5 star recruits get drafted into the NFL. Here's a good article that breaks down the last 5 years of data. Sure there's always a decent number of diamonds in the rough but at the rate we have been recruiting we should have produced more NFL players in the last decade.

Luckily this staff seems to be doing a much better job of that though.

Rankings are based on how they project to the NFL. The players size and measurables are weighted heavily in rankings. Players who project to have NFL size/speed get ranked high and then those same guys get drafted because they still have NFL size. Where as some players that are not prototypical size can still be a good college player but then gets skipped on draft day because they are not big enough or fast enough. They still can make a good team that can beat you. You can't measure heart or toughness.

No, that's not how rankings work at all. Just look at a guy like Bryce Young who is severely undersized for a QB and look how high he was ranked coming out of high school.

If you haven't noticed QB measurables and skillset has changed in the last 20 years. Yes, there are outliers at every position but size is a major part. I have yet to see a top rated left tackle that is 6 foot 0 and weighs 280.

Hard to play tackle when you weigh 280 pounds lol

Let's not kid ourselves..........size always matters. Now how we use that size means even more.........

Wait.......is this still about football?

Maybe for an offensive lineman. But skill always trumps size when it comes to rankings.
Dude, no it doesn't.

Here is the process. Find all the guys that have size, then out of those guys find the ones with the most skill. Then rank accordingly. If you don't pass the first cut you aren't getting far. Guys who are 5'6 and run a 4.4 forty grow on trees, very few make good college or NFL football players.

That doesn't hold true for skill positions in today's game. Especially the WR position. More and more 5'8 180 lb guys are playing and having success in the NFL. Same could be said for defensive backs as well. I would say the offensive and defensive line is the 2 positions where size matters. Skill positions not so much.
