I didn't want to start a new thread on this, but since a DL is being discussed, thought I'd ask.

Orlando seems to be a 3 man front guy. Why is he not recruiting big defensive lineman? The biggest lineman he recruited was 250, and I believe he was a juco. In my mind a 3 man front is 3 big body types who eat up blocks so others can make the play. Obviously, his 3 man front is not designed this way. Anybody able to explain how his smaller quicker 3 man front works? I know the BIG12 is built on quickness, not size. But I still don't really understand recruiting smaller guys for a 3 man front. This is not negative, I just don't understand Orlando's scheme. I had assumed he was playing Hagar as an in line DL out of necessity until he got guys for his scheme, but it must be by design. Thanks

Muscle is better than fat? Leaner equals fresh dudes in the 4th qtr.. Leaner guys can get around fatter slower guys. There does need to be some size required but coming off the edges requires height, strenght, and leverage. Our guys in the middle are still big.

Orlando has been recruiting big DLine-men as well:

Chisolm: 6'4"- 300
Carson: 6'4"- 300
Ojomo: 6'2"- 285
Coburn: 6'3"- 330
Sweat (current signee) 6'4"- 285.....will be massive

Orlando's best lineman to date has been Ed Oliver....and he is about 290 I think

So is Orlando's scheme about lineman beating blocks or taking on double teams? Most 3 man fronts line over the lineman and have 2 gaps, where 4 man fronts normally have single gap responsibilities. In my mind, 3 man fronts are normally about 3 guys engaging 5 OL. So others can make plays. I would think bigger bodies would do a better job of taking up space. The 2018 guys seem to be more the space eater types, just surprised me he wouldn't go after size every year in the front 3. Maybe some of the smaller DE's in the 2019 class end up as rush OLB types. Orlando knows a hell of a lot more than me, I just couldn't figure out his 2019 DL approach. Pretty sure he knows why.

To me, he is taking large frame athletic guys and adding muscle. On D, speed and disruption are key. It's not just the lbers and safeties but everyone. Your type of d requires a scraping or penetrating linebacker or safety to make the majority of tackles. Orlando's scheme creates disruption from every postion. Speed, leverage, and strength provide that. Look what we did to jawja. Fromm couldn't throw an out to his receivers so we played soft corners and pinned our ears back and destroyed him.

Orlando is recruiting dlinemen that can move to the ball very fast. If Leal would have committed to Texas he would have been an inside 3 technique or a 5 technique. He never would have been lined up against the center. That is the only position that needs a big think body and even then our most successful guys are much like Poona Ford or Chris Nelson. Guys that are shorter and stocky but with a huge motor and the ability to get their pads low. Next up is Moro Ojomo who is a redshirt freshmen. Him and Coburn are going to be hell on defenses for the next 2 to 3 years.

The other part to this equation is the Miami Hurricane affect. In the 80's and 90's, Miami was famous for spinning down a good athlete into a great athlete at a different position. Take an average safety and bulk him up a bit and he becomes a linebacker that is a great athlete. Orlando is doing that with some of our DEs. This class we have 3'star Mpangi who if he stayed at DE would be average, maybe above average, but bulk him up to 300, and keep his athletic ability and you have a DT that the NFL drools over. And you have a DT that can stay on the field in these pass happy Big 12 offenses.

This isn't something new, one of Mack's best DT was Michael Houston who was recruited as a RB. I will also say that the biggest reason I wasn't surprised that Texas beat up on the Georgia oline is because those guys were all big fat guys who weren't used to going up against athletic smaller linemen like Texas had.
