EJ completely blew the doors off the Cotton Bowl that warm August evening. I was already a big fan, based on his great early albums Tumbleweed Connection (that I still think may be my favorite rock album of all time) and Madman Across the Water. This, however, was the tour where he introduced Goodbye Yellow Brick Road with incredible, rockin’ performances of “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” and “Saturday Night’s Allright for Fighting.” For me, that’s when he peaked and I didn’t care much for his stuff after that (although 30+ years later, I had the good fortune to see him in a much smaller venue at a private benefit concert for a foundation, and he did fantastic piano solo versions of his oldies).
To top it off, his opening acts that night at the Cotton Bowl were some up-and-coming stars named B.W. Stevenson and Steely Dan.
Wish I’d had an iPhone back then to record some of it. Unforgettable.
Anyone else there?
