So what they did was change the props out on the C-130 to these new multiblade props that are curved slightly, instead of straight. As best I can understand, the increased number of blades coupled with the ability to tilt the rotors of the blade give it more "bite" which makes the plane able to take off on shorter runways and climb at more rapid rates. Not sure what it does for distance or fuel efficiency, but when you fly into crappy, short runways, you've got to be able to land and stop quickly, as well as lift your ass of the ground quickly.
The 105mm cannon stays the same as well as the GE gatling gun, and the old 40mm bofors were replaced with a bushmaster IV 40mm chain gun which is what the Bradley fighting vehicle uses for its main turret. Of course there were different weapons that were used during the evolution of this platform, everything from 20mm cannons to 30mm to 35mm etc etc. It's been an exercise of "how big a boom do we need vs how much ammo and fuel can we carry vs how long can we loiter on target" yada yada.
Bottom line is, this platform will fvck you up. It's scary as fvck. I can't even imagine what it would be like to know that big bastard was circling over head and NOT on your side. I saw a bumper sticker that an air force Spectre pilot had in his home office years ago. A friend of a friend. It basically had a rudimentary drawing of the gunship followed by these words "you can run, but you'll just die tired".
Spot on as usual clob!
That's some slap you in your face reality right there.
