Recruiting Thread 2017

Coaches on the road:

Scout
reporting UT visited Manvel yesterday to see S Derrick Tucker. CB Kobe Boyce was expecting Coach Williams yesterday afternoon as well.

Texas hosted a number of top recruits for its annual spring game earlier this month.

But one notable name missing from the visitors list was Kennedale outside linebacker Baron Browning. There was a lot of speculation about his absence, but Browning said it simply had to do with family.

“My mom needed me to stay home that weekend,” Browning said. “That kind of shut everything down, so I stayed home. Then I went to watch some film with Coach (Zarnell) Fitch at TCU. I just wanted to pick his brain since I’m going to be playing more Will and last year I played more Sam.

“I talked with Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach BJ (Brian Jean-Mary). They just told me it was all cool. They understood. They just asked about my family, and family comes first.”

There have been some talks that Browning is really focused on TCU and UCLA at this time. But the five-star prospect made it clear that he is still considering most of the schools in his Top 10, which he released three weeks ago.

And that includes Texas. Browning has a special relationship with head coach Charlie Strong, likes the direction the program is heading in and truly enjoyed his visit to Austin in late February.

“I like the class they got in this year,” Browning said. “I’m looking to see how the team and the defense does this season. Coach Strong stands out to me. He’s the icing on the cake. You don’t find too many coaches that really care about their players and how they do in the classroom.”

Browning said he likes both TCU and Texas because they are in state, but he added that he’s ‘not afraid to go far away from home.’ In fact, his brother played football at Stanford, so Browning is taking closer looks at Alabama, Ohio State, UCLA and others.

The only visit Browning has set for this spring is Ohio State, which will take place at some point in the next month. After that, he plans to really focus on his upcoming decision.

“I definitely want to make it before the season,” Browning said. “I was actually thinking of doing it at The Opening this summer, but I’m not sure if I want to wait that long. I just kind of want to get it over with.”

A five-star recruit, Browning will graduate from Kennedale in December and enroll early.

At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Browning is ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker in the country and No. 3 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Hornsports - A rundown on the recruiting board 4/25.

It was a slow week on the recruiting scene. There is a small lull in between the end of Texas spring practice, and the beginning of the spring evaluation period. The HornSports staff worked the phones to get some info on recruits, and we thought we’d bring you a big picture look at where Texas stands with those on the recruiting board.

Quarterback – Sam Ehlinger – Austin Westlake (Texas commit)
Nothing new here. Ehlinger is as firm a commit as one can be. The Westlake gunslinger is leading a recruiting charge for the Texas class, and behind the scenes it’s resonating with recruits. It should be encouraging to hear that many recruits really respect Sam and his game. While he’s not a public guy recruiting on social media, we were told he’s very easy to connect with, and other recruits see him as incredibly genuine. Ehlinger has taken on a Charlie Strong like “long game” approach to this process, and it should pay off down the line in one aspect or another.

Running Back – Toneil Carter – Langham Creek
Texas is trying to intensify their recruiting efforts for the Houston area runner, but they do have a battle on their hands. The Louisiana born prospect values the opportunity to play in the SEC, and it looks like the Aggies are starting to pull away in this race.

Running Back – JK Dobbins – LaGrange (Ohio State commit)
This one has to hurt for the Longhorns. A premier prospect that lives just down the road from your campus ends up choosing an out of state option after declaring Texas his dream school. The good news is that Texas has plenty of time to turn this into an Erick Fowler like recruitment. Dobbins is flippable, but he really does love Ohio State. If Texas wants to win out they are going to really have to step up their game.

Running Back – Najee Harris – Antioch, CA (Alabama commit)
It was nice to see Texas throw their hat in the ring for one of the top players in the nation, but the reality is this one is not going to happen barring a miraculous season and top notch recruiting job.

Wide Receiver – Damion Miller – John Tyler (Texas commit)
Miller is going to continue taking visits and talk about evaluating options, but the spring game went a long way to calm his concerns about the Texas offense. Our sources tell us that Miller loves Texas and wants to stick with his commitment, but he also wants to make sure he’s making the right decision for himself. If the Longhorns can continue to show growth on offense, they should be able to hold on to the east Texas star.

Wide Receiver – Omar Manning – Lancaster
Manning is a pretty quiet player, but it’s well known within metroplex circles that TCU holds a solid lead for him right now. Oklahoma is also a serious contender, but from what we understand Texas is on the outside looking in. There seems to be some optimism within the Texas program about their chances of landing Manning, and I’m not sure where it’s coming from.

Wide Receiver – Tyrell Shavers – Lewisville
We’ve got a mixed bag of information on Shavers. A source on his high school coaching staff indicated that Texas was in a very strong position to land the high end athlete, but sources close to Shavers we spoke to yesterday indicate that the SEC is more alluring for him. A primary concern of Shavers is the ability to play baseball at the next level. LSU, Texas A&M, and Florida State seem to be the schools talked about at this point.

Wide Receiver – Camron Buckley – Cedar Hill
There’s a delicate situation arising with Buckley, who plans to make a commitment on May 2nd. Texas currently leads for the south Dallas star, but Texas made some indications they’d like to evaluate him in the spring before accepting his commitment. The Longhorns are waiting on players like Shavers and Manning, and they may not want to fill up so quickly. If Texas doesn’t take his commitment, we are told Ole Miss is ready to accept one and they would be the likely destination.

Wide Receiver – Mannie Netherly – Crosby (Texas A&M commit)
Netherly is open for business from what we hear, and Texas is trying to get their foot in the door. Mannie grew up a Texas fan, but he was put off by the fact that Texas offered later than most other schools. Texas has the opportunity to get in there, but it seems like LSU has a lot of steam right now.

Wide Receiver – Montrell Estell – Hooks
The east Texas receiver seems to be taking things slowly, but Texas is in the thick of the race. We are told A&M leads by a slim margin, but this one might be a long way from ending.

Tight End – Major Tennison – Bullard (Texas commit)
Tennison enjoyed his time on campus for the spring game, and he seems genuinely torn by his love for Texas and his desire to see other options. It should also be mentioned that the Texas offense didn’t do much to feature the tight end during the spring game. If Jeff Traylor can stay the course, Texas has a good chance to hold on. Expect more visits for the big tight end throughout the year, but don’t overreact to the ebbs and flows of this recruitment.

Offensive Lineman – Adrian Ealy – Baton Rouge University Lab, LA
Ealy does have sincere interest in Texas, but any time you’re dealing with a U-Lab player you’ll have to battle LSU. While the Longhorns will battle hard and probably even get Ealy on campus for an official, LSU has to be the heavy favorite in this one.

Offensive Lineman – Xavier Newman – DeSoto (Texas commit)
The newest Texas commit tells us he’s 100% solid and has closed his recruitment. That’s kind of refreshing to hear in this day and age of recruiting. While we still caution anything can happen, we aren’t getting any negative vibes from Newman at this point.

Offensive Lineman – Edward Ingram – DeSoto (LSU commit)
Ingram wasn’t too hot on Texas before he made his pledge to LSU, and we don’t expect to see him come back around.

Offensive Lineman – Walker Little – Bellaire Episcopal
Texas did a fantastic job hosting Little and his family for the spring game. While his recruitment still holds many twists and turns, Texas positioned themselves very well for the top lineman in the state. Stanford looms large in this one due to their academic and athletic prowess. Ole Miss has family ties to Little, and Alabama is Alabama. This is one of the big battles for Charlie Strong this year, and I like him in most of these fights.

Offensive Lineman – Tyrese Robinson – McKinney Boyd (Oklahoma commit)
Robinson flirted with Texas a few times, but he’s strongly committed to the Sooners and their 2017 recruiting efforts. If something were to happen with Robinson, Texas would be right there to pick him up. At this point they are banking on a long recruitment that chips away at the Sooners lead.

Offensive Lineman – Will Farrar – Richmond Travis
Farrar visited Texas a few weeks ago, and we were told it went well for Texas. The big man seems to be slowing the process down which goes against a belief he would move on to his next commitment quickly. Texas sits in a strong position, but if A&M offers it could get tough.

Offensive Lineman – Chuck Filiaga – Aledo
Filiaga is moving from California to the north Texas powerhouse program, which bodes well for the Longhorns in this recruitment. Expect some west coast flavor, along with challenges from A&M and Oklahoma.

Offensive Lineman – Creed Humphrey – Shawnee, OK
It’s tough to get a read on Humphrey, because he hasn’t been taking interviews over the past few months. Oklahoma and Texas A&M have also offered, but the idea we get talking to people behind the scenes is that Texas is the strongest candidate in the state to win his commitment. Never count out the Sooners for an Oklahoma kid, but this relationship goes back to Matt Mattox’s time at Tulsa.

Offensive Lineman – Grayson Reed – Cy Creek (Texas A&M Commit)
Once considered the run away leaders for Reed, Texas lost out on a battle with A&M for the versatile lineman. There could still be some movement here if Texas gets him back on campus, but Grayson is pretty serious about his commitment, and he doesn’t intend to de-commit.

Defensive End – Taquon Graham – Temple
He will announce his decision on May 27th, and I will be surprised if it isn’t Texas. Graham bonded with the staff quickly, and he’s close with Davion Curtis and Kobe Boyce. Graham is the top pass rushing end in the state, so that means a big win at a need position if they pull it off.

Defensive End – Lagaryonn Carson – Liberty-Eylau (Texas commit)
He’s committed to Texas and recruiting hard for the Longhorns. While anything can change in recruiting, Carson looks locked in at this point.

Defensive End – Robert Beal – Norcross, GA
He named Texas his leader after defecting from Notre Dame, but Texas will have to battle to take a prospect from deep in the heart of SEC country. Things will get interesting if Texas can get him on campus this year, and if they do I like their chances.

Defensive End – Bryan Jones – Baton Rouge Madison Prep
Jones is the teammate of Texas signee Malcolm Roach, and while that might work in their favor we hear that LSU carries too much weight. The Tigers have yet to offer, but if they do we believe he will shut it down.

Defensive End – LaBryan Ray – Madison, AL
Texas extended an offer to Ray last week, but you don’t need me to tell you how difficult it will be to win an Alabama kid away from the Tide.

Defensive End – K’Lavon Chaisson – North Shore
Chaisson is receptive to the Texas recruiting pitch, but LSU, Baylor, and Texas A&M are probably in front of the Longhorns early on.

Defensive Tackle – Marvin Wilson – Bellaire Episcopal
Wilson is the crown jewel at the position for Texas. He wants to see wins and progress from the Longhorns, because his relationship with the staff is strong. Texas sits behind Alabama, LSU, and Florida State for his services early on. They are probably even with Texas A&M as far as in state options go, and they can make their way up his list with a good year.

Defensive Tackle – Damion Daniels – Bishop Dunne
There’s not a lot to report on Daniels at this point. He’s picking up offers just about every day, but he hasn’t talked much about how his recruitment is going. He’s probably a strong lean to Oklahoma State where his brother plays, but it doesn’t seem that Texas is very involved early on.

Linebacker – Baron Browning – Kennedale
Everyone wants to know where Browning is going, and the top player in the state is playing things close to the vest. At this point we’d guess that Texas, TCU, and Oklahoma are the strong players for him. Outside programs like LSU and Alabama are a threat as well, but this one has the feel of a regional recruitment early on. Browning didn’t make it to Austin for the spring game due to transportation complications, and he showed up on TCU’s campus that very day. The bottom line is Texas sits in a good position going into the summer for the freakish linebacker.

Linebacker – Anthony Hines – Plano East
Hines is a top target for Texas as they look to find a dynamic inside backer. They don’t get much more dynamic than Hines, and Texas has been on him for quite some time. Charlie Strong and Malik Jefferson are big influences for Hines, but Oklahoma is also a threat for the most recruited prospect in the nation.

Linebacker – Levi Jones – Austin Westlake
At first sight we thought Texas would be a shoe in for the local product, but we hear that they actually have quite the battle on their hands. Sources tell us that the brother of Cayleb Jones has his eye on some other schools. Texas has Sam Ehlinger and Breckyn Hager on their side, but those two will have to put in overtime from what we understand.

Linebacker – Dylan Moses – IMG Academy
Moses still has Texas tops on his list, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Alabama, LSU, or Florida State out in front when we get to the fall. Texas will most likely get a visit, and if they are smart they will want to get the last visit. Moses has a lot of love for Charlie Strong, and Texas will put up a good fight in this one. It’s still difficult to see Texas coming out on top in this one.

DB – Kobe Boyce – Lake Dallas (Texas commit)
Boyce is locked in for Texas, and he’s recruiting for the Horns in DFW circles. Boyce is pot committed to Texas and the DBU legacy.

DB – Jeff Okudah – South Grand Prairie
The Longhorns did a good job to get back in this race, but they have a ways to go before they are in a comfortable position. Okudah will be stopping by campus in the next few months to discuss plans for him within the Texas defense. Okudah wants to play in a flex position like Jalen Ramsey at Florida State. If Texas can show they have a plan for how to play the unique prospect and win some games they might be able to climb back to the top. For now this feels like a battle between LSU, Ohio State, and Alabama.

DB – Grant Delpit – Lamar
Delpit announced a top 10 this week and Texas wasn’t in it. While I’m sure they will continue to pursue, it doesn’t look like this one will happen.

DB – Chevin Calloway – Bishop Dunne
Calloway announced that Texas was back in the race for him after visiting for the Texas spring game. The problem with this recruitment is the lapse in communication between Texas and Calloway for long periods. If they want him, they need to get out and see him this spring to show him how much they like him.

DB – Kary Vincent – Port Arthur Memorial
He’s expressed a real interest in Texas, but he hasn’t been on campus yet to see them. Texas A&M offered recently, and with that being his father’s alma mater they obviously have a strong link. Baylor is also in it due to his friendship with Kam Martin.

DB – Derrick Tucker – Manvel
Tucker has always shown Texas love, but he hasn’t been on campus much this year. We get the feeling if he had to decide today it would be Texas, but a source told us Houston is a very real player. Tucker likes the idea of playing in his home city and staying close to the family.

Baron Browning... There have been some talks that Browning is really focused on TCU and UCLA at this time.
EJ 24/7 Has the right perspective on this IMO-

I spent most of my Monday afternoon hanging out at Kennedale and watching five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning work out. After conversing with Browning for an extended period of time and talking to others at his high school, I really don’t believe that this is a race between TCU and UCLA. I would even go as far as to say that I would give Texas the in-state edge as of today. Browning is set to make his decision in the next few months, and Texas should like where it stands. The most important thing for UT is head coach Charlie Strong to close (pardon the pun) strong, something he’s done time and again during the past two cycles, and assistant Brian Jean-Mary getting more involved in the recruitment, which should happen in the coming weeks.

Here are some quotes from my conversation with Browning that put his recruitment into perspective as far as the Longhorns are concerned:

On where things stand overall: “I dropped my Top 10, but I’m not really communicating with some of those schools. Anything can change. I’m still considering TCU and Texas obviously because they are in state. But I’m still weighing some out-of-state schools heavily. I’m not afraid to leave home.”

On why UCLA is a big player in his recruitment: “Coach (Scott) White. As far as linebackers coaches go, he is by far the one I have the best relationship with right now. If I go there, I’ll be in good hands. He is one of the only coaches that not only stays in contact with me but my parents. He even talks to my grandparents and my older brother, who is playing a key role in my recruitment as well. Coach (Scott) White really has a plan for me. He’s going to show off all my skills. He wants to use me like Myles Jack.”

On the academics at Texas: “I was really impressed at junior day. They have a lot of academic advisors and a lot of resources for you to succeed and do your best in the classroom. If you fail, it’s your fault and nobody else’s. And obviously academics is a big factor for me.”

On if he’s talked to Texas about how he’ll fit into the defense: “They haven’t talked too much to me about that to be honest, so I’m not really sure how I would be used.” (Holland)

Hmmm, I am going to need to make a couple of calls inquiring about that RB out of Antioch, Ca since I'm right around the corner. I didn't know we were interested in him.

Per TFB:
Derrick Tucker: As we noted earlier in the week, Texas stopped by to visit one of their top 2017 DB targets, Derrick Tucker (Manvel, TX) on Monday. Coach Hailey has been making the rounds here in Houston and seeing Tucker was obviously a day one priority.

Tucker tells me that the schools recruiting him the hardest at this point are Texas, Alabama, TCU and Arizona. We still get the sense that Tucker is a Texas lean and we certainly expect him to be visited again during this spring evaluation period. – (Super K)

Kobe Boyce: Another day one priority for Texas was current CB commit, Kobe Boyce. Texas made sure to visit him on Monday. I chatted with Boyce briefly and, as many you have noted in the comments section, there is a lot of interest in Boyce right now. OU is expected to make a second visit to see Boyce this week. TCU is expected to visit this week and are apparently pushing Boyce for a visit. And, Alabama apparently has begun recruiting Boyce and are asking him to visit this summer as well. – (Super K)

Kobie Whiteside: Texas defensive line coach, Brick Haley recently stopped by Alief Taylor HS (Houston, TX) to visit a few prospects including 2017 DT/NG, Kobie Whiteside. Whiteside does hold a couple of a FBS offers and I do expect his list to expand some. For Texas I think this is about making sure they’ve seen all the in-state interior defensive linemen. Having taken such a big class last year with so many freshmen coming in, landing that star interior lineman this cycle may be a little tougher. – (Super K)

Tyrell Shavers: Longhorns were expected to be in attendance for Tyrell Shavers baseball game, however I’m told it was rained out. I continue to hear that Texas is really focused in on Shavers.

As many of you may have noticed, Charlie Strong isn’t the type of guy who is going to spray out a lot of offers. They like to focus on a guy and get that guy. It seems Shavers has become a top Texas priority. – (Super K)

Spring Evaluation Visits: If we hear of any visits today we will update you here. Also, if any of our readers happen to get word about where any of the coaches may be, please feel free to post in the comments section below.

Will Farrar: Texas stopped by to see 2017 OG, Will Farrar (Richmond, TX) yesterday. Farrar recently decommitted from UCLA. – (Andrew)

Frisco: We know at least one coach will be in the Frisco (TX) area. This is obviously home of Texas Tech commits, Dawton Deaton and Jack Anderson but there also some 2018 prospects they will likely be checking on.

UT coaches also saw ATH Montrell Estell (Hooks) yesterday.

Higdon Chat:

Most likely for Filiaga: Going to a school in California, a school in Texas, or other?

I believe he ends up in Texas, but this is a difficult thing to predict right now. We need more time; we need to see him take more trips. We also need to see as the OV’s get going is he taking more trips back out to the West coast? That could be a pretty telling sign.

Texas going to continue recruiting Reed? Or has the ship sailed? Kind of still stings losing him.

I believe they can get back in on this one, especially based on how the two seasons may play out moving forward.

I know it's still extremely early, and there are people who have not yet been offered yet but will end up in this class, but as of right now who do you think will be the WRs, LBs, DBs and the sole RB in this cycle as of now?

The players at the top of the board are still the same I believe.

WR –Three that come to mind
Mannie Netherly
Omar Manning
Tyrel Shavers

LB – Three that come to mind
Anthony Hines
Baron Browning
Levi Jones

RB
They should still get JK Dobbins on campus for a visit UOV for a game and OV after the season

DB
This is the trick position in this class I believe. They have one CB with Boyce on board. They visited Derrick Tucker yesterday and will see J. Okudah this week as well as Chevin Calloway. You will see new offers at this position imo moving forward with the evaluation period and into camp.

If NSD was tomorrow where would browning go?

I believe he would ink with Texas if NSD were tomorrow, but it’s not tomorrow, and we have a LONG way to go still.

Lately, I've been reading we are going to make Toneil Carter a priority and go after him hard. Do you see any way we get back into this recruitment or is this one a little too late? Is there anything we can be optimistic about here big picture? I haven't heard about much interest from him in us, so I'm curious how this ends up.

As of today, I believe he ends up with the soe. Yes, Texas has been recruiting him for a while now.

Does any of this Baylor stuff affect recruiting? Have you ever seen anything like this?

I don’t believe it helps them, but if a kid wants to go to Baylor, this will not stop him.

Managing a QB room has to be the hardest room to manage. Keeping it stocked has to almost impossible. How would you manage the Texas QB room over the next 3 recruiting cycles?

Sam in the 2017 class and two in the 2018 class is what I would shoot for. With Sam and Shane on board next season it will be VERY difficult to land two QB’s so the more likely scenario is one now and one then. Whoever they take in next year’s class must be the best of the best.

What's the players schedule during summer??

Pat Moorer

I think weights, cardio, and stamina drills during June??

Lots of strength and conditioning type stuff and the players will hit the field on their own in addition to all of the academics they need to focus.

Just wondering when practice schedule and two-a-days??

I think it starts in the first week August.

When are the 2016 signees allowed to participate??

Soon as they enroll which is the first week in June.

Looking at our roster, except in the trenches and WR, we already have a good idea of who's starting, and it looks really young...What affect does that have on the recruits? Good in the sense of "look they play new talent" or bad in the way of "looks like these guys are the starter favorites and I'm not going to see any time on the field until a couple of years?"

It has an impact, but to truly understand how much of an impact we need to see who does what at WR this season. I like Burt and Johnson, but after that not much all I feel is Texas level WR—not yet anyway. This year is a big year for a lot of players including DeAndre McNeal.

Name three players Texas has made up the most ground with the past three months.

I would go with Hines, Browning and Little would be the kid I feel they have made up the most ground over that three-month time frame you listed

Any announcement on when UTL will be this year?

Not public

Who is your breakout freshman?

Man, it's easy for me with Collin Johnson –However, CJ will be overshadowed by what Shane does this year. Much easier for Shane with the ball in his hands every play

Who is your breakout sophomore?

I am going to give Davante Davis a shot; I feel he is prime for a HUGE Soph. season as well as Anthony Wheeler who goes over the 100 tackle mark this year IF healthy all year

Thoughts on Texas inking a top 3-5 class in 2017. Charlie has the attention of a lot of 5 stars this year.

I believe you will see him ink a class this year with the highest average star ranking he has ever signed. The overall lower numbers might keep them from the top three not entirely sure just yet, but the quality will rival every single class signed anywhere in America.

How would you rank the top 15 recruits on how highly you thought of them coming in if you combined the 2015 and 2016 classes?

First of all, great question! Thank you for the question and thank you for being a part of this community. I appreciate you ( CCRAW11) giving the site a chance so WELCOME ABOARD. Combining the last two classes and you will quickly see how talented the class they just signed is for me.

Malik Jefferson
D’Andre Christmas-Giles
Davante Davis
Jeffrey McCulloch
Collin Johnson
Holton Hill
Anthony Wheeler
Andrew Fitzgerald
Kyle Porter
Jordan Elliott
Zach Shackelford
Shane Buechele
Jean Delance
Eric Cuffee
Malcolm Roach

Anything to worry about with soe checking in on Carson? He seems the most solid commit this side of Sam but I only have Twitter to judge by, and we know what you say about that. Carson at least took a Baylor visit since committing I think where Sam seems to have no other interest whatsoever. Any worries with Carson?

Always a worry with some of these kids. It’s recruiting and you simply never know. LC speaks with the Texas coaches ALL THE TIME but his problem has been finding a ride to Austin. We will see if that continues throughout the summer and I am sure he will make it back often. Just call it a hunch.

Based on this time last year what was your comfort level on our chances to pull a great top 10 recruiting class last year, how does that compare this year and you comfort level with pulling another great class? Do you feel better same or worse at this point?

I feel a bit better honestly. I wish they had a few more ships to give out, though.

On their visits with recruits, do you expect coaches to make it to Florida or Georgia? Alabama?

All of the above but not just yet.

CBS Sports just ended the debate and proved what most of us already know, and it's that Texas is DBU. No surprise there though I'm sure there are some fan bases in the southeast that are having a hard time with this. My question is, do recruits care about this? Do they ever mention it? Are they annoyed when fans mention it when trying to sway them?

I think it does play in because that means the school has a history of putting players in the league from that position. UGA with RB’s, Bama with DL, etc. It is a factor, but the three most important factors will always be location, Relationships and playing time. The order depends on the kid and the situation, though.

I have not seen this information, so I apologize if this was addressed previously. How did Marvin Wilson's visit go when he came by two weeks ago? Did we make up any ground on the other top schools? Any details are appreciated!

He has a good relationship with Charlie Strong and likes him. It was a great trip for sure and Texas gave him a lot to think about. Texas is bringing in a BIG haul on the DL, and that is also something to think about for Marvin. Texas will wait for him for as long as it takes and that will give them a chance being the main in-state school he is looking at imo. WELCOME ABOARD sir and thanks for asking the question. I am glad you are part of the community donwayne.

I am adding on to the previous post about Baylor. Obviously, if something like that would happen at Texas (even one time), it would make national news. I am familiar with Sanders and Meander. I am curious, other than Baylor, what other institution is this tolerated (that you have covered or know about)? Strong would be gone if it was on his watch, and not because he was Charlie Strong, but because he enabled it.

It seems like Penn State is one? Eventually, it came to light, though. I believe schools that tend not to be National Powers get away with this kind of stuff and I don’t think anyone really pays that much attention to what goes on at a place like Baylor but they will now – not good for Baylor mind you.

Also, what impact, if any, have you heard from 2017 recruits about this situation?
BTW, I am proud Strong does not tolerate any disrespect towards women, we don't need enablers.

I have not heard any feedback from recruits, and those are subjects that don’t tend to come up in a normal conversation between myself and a recruit.

Your favorite recruiting moment. Your most hated?

WOW! Well, everyone knows I grew up a Gator fan. Year’s ago, HUGE big time DT Marcus Stroud –many felt was headed to UF. It was down to UF and UGA and the kid had a UF shirt on and ripped it off to reveal, yup you guessed it a UGA shirt on lol Kids today! Best moment had to be when Tim Tebow pulled the trigger to UF. The kid had a UF mailbox for crying out loud and watching ESPN drum up this crazy publicity as if he was going to Bama. Tebow and Spikes were always headed to UF.

When will the public know which 2016 guys qualified and which ones did not? I know no one knows yet but is it like a June timeline? August? Varies from recruit to recruit?

End of May I think around the 28th they start to move in.

Does Texas remain in the big12?

Yes

I'm kind of dissatisfied with what we heard from Malik this spring I was expecting a big leap from last year to this year ..is it the position or is Anthony Wheeler that good to where he outshined Malik?

Wheeler was that good. Malik is NOT out of position as everyone will have you believe. What does everyone keep saying about MJ? Get him to the edge, get him away from the middle, let him rush the QB and let him do the things he does best. Most of the people talking about this have no idea that the MLB position that MJ plays is the ONE positon that will have more blitz packages than ANY other position. Why would you want him to play anything other than that spot when it gives him the ability to rush the QB MORE THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER ON THE FIELD? This topic is driving me crazy as you can see lol. I am glad you asked about it so I can clear it up for everyone. Now, we know the defense was not blitzing anyone this Spring, so in theory, the one thing that MJ does better than anyone is rush the QB and he was not able to take advantage of that skill set for the most part. Do not worry about MJ; he is going to be moved all over the field. It does NOT matter where he starts a play or where he lines up at pre-snap ONLY where he finishes.

You think Cuffee redshirts?

No

Iyo who is a better prospect Dylan Moses or Browning?

Now its Moses but in two years from now, I think it will be Browning.

Mostly Everybody thinks that Holton Hill is the best corner we got, but I think Devante Davis is the best am I wrong?

You are not wrong. I believe D2 is the best DB on the team.

Does Beal Browning Hines Wilson end up at Texas? Maybe the percentage of that happening?

I can tell you I feel really good about the first three, and we will see what happens with Marvin. Beal talks with CS all the time.

Geez this is exciting to hear.

Just think of our possible defensive signing class.

DE- Graham and Beal
DT- Carson (I know he is a DE right now but most think he grows into a DT) and Wilson
LB- Browning, Hines, and Jones or Moses
CB- Boyce and Calloway or Vincent?
S- Okudah and Tucker

As others have mentioned, if we can put it together on the field, this recruiting class could be truly outstanding.

More staff visits (24/7)...

-Coach Traylor stopped by Bullard to see TE Major Tennison.

2018 Recruit but who cares we need something to talk about lol.

A four-star prospect, Foster also holds offers from Arizona State, Baylor, Oklahoma, TCU and others.

The 6-foot-1, 188-pounder is ranked as the No. 1 safety in the country and No. 1 overall recruit in the state in the 2018 class.

UT possibly likes him at TE.

Quotes from WR Omar Manning of Lancaster (24/7):

“It was a childhood favorite for me growing up,” Manning said. “Texas was the big school here. I used to always watch them. Tradition, obviously. It’s just a good program. I think Coach (Charlie) Strong does a really good job. I think he’s going to turn it around this year.”

“I want to see the offense,” Manning said. “I know they’re going to have a different offense that they’re running this year. I want to watch them through the season and see how they do with it."

“I like the new offense because it’s kind of like what we do here. I feel like I can fit into any offense — pro or spread. It really doesn’t matter. But the way they explained it to me, I think it’s going to be pretty good.”

“I’ve been talking Coach Williams lately,” Manning said. “He’s just been telling me about how the offense is changing, how they have a new game plan and how I would fit in. I like him.”

Omar Manning goes in-depth on Texas

Omar Manning is continuing to blow up. Manning added new offers from LSU, Michigan and Ohio State in just the last five days. The four-star wide receiver doesn’t want to make any hasty decisions and is taking things extremely slow. In fact, Manning doesn’t want to release a Top 10 list until the end of spring. When he does, Texas will almost certainly survive the cut. “It was a childhood favorite for me growing up,” Manning said. “Texas was the big school here. I used to always watch them. Tradition, obviously. It’s just a good program. I think Coach (Charlie) Strong does a really good job. I think he’s going to turn it around this year.”

Manning was supposed to make an unofficial visit to Texas for its annual spring game a few weeks ago but was unable to attend due to travel issues. He hopes to make it to Austin ‘soon.’ Manning also said he wants to make a visit to Texas in the fall and is really looking forward to seeing how the Longhorns perform on the field, especially on the offensive side of the ball. “I want to see the offense,” Manning said. “I know they’re going to have a different offense that they’re running this year. I want to watch them through the season and see how they do with it. I like the new offense because it’s kind of like what we do here. I feel like I can fit into any offense — pro or spread. It really doesn’t matter. But the way they explained it to me, I think it’s going to be pretty good.”

At 6-foot-3, 203 pounds, Manning is a big, physical receiver that commands constant double teams on the outside. As a junior at Lancaster, Manning notched 33 receptions for 671 yards and 12 touchdowns. New Texas wide receivers coach Charlie Williams loves Manning’s skillset and has been making him a top priority. “I’ve been talking Coach Williams lately,” Manning said. “He’s just been telling me about how the offense is changing, how they have a new game plan and how I would fit in. I like him.”

Manning said he plans to visit a number of schools this offseason. Alabama, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, TCU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M are just some of the schools he said are standing out to him early on. Manning is ranked as the No. 21 wide receiver in the country and No. 23 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Xavier Newman happy with decision, ready to recruit

Things still feel a little surreal for DeSoto offensive lineman Xavier Newman. After earning an offer from Texas three weeks ago, Newman made an unofficial visit to UT for its annual spring game and followed that up with a verbal commitment just four days later. Everything escalated quickly, but Newman knows he made the right call. “I’m just very excited to be committed to Texas,” Newman said. “I know that Texas is the right place for me. It’s a good school. I really like Coach (Charlie) Strong and what he’s trying to build there.”

Newman committed to Texas over offers from Arizona State, Kansas State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M and others. Just days before his pledge, Colorado was at the top of his list. But things started to change as his announcement neared. While offensive line coach Matt Mattox recruited him hard, it was Texas quarterback commit Sam Ehlinger that sealed the deal. “He played a big role,” Newman said. “He introduced himself to me at the spring game and after that, we just started talking. We really got to know each other. He told me all about Texas, and I really liked it.”

Now, Newman is starting to do a little bit of his own recruiting. “I’m trying to get them to offer my teammate Isaiah (Stewart) so he can commit with us,” Newman said. “I’m also recruiting Stephan Zabie. If they offer, I want him to jump on board.” Newman added that he is 100 percent solid to Texas and does not plan on making any other visits at this time. With his decision out of the way, Newman said he’s simply looking forward to seeing the Longhorns this upcoming season.

And he has some really high expectations. “I think (Texas) can be great,” Newman said. “I think they can win all of them.” At 6-foot-2, 272 pounds, Newman is ranked as the No. 23 offensive guard in the country and No. 83 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Some recruiting notes from 24/7...

-Coach Mattox made a visit to Keller Timber Creek to see OL Alan Ali. He is currently committed to SMU, but UT could be close to offering.

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3889909/alan-ali

-LB Tyler Taylor of Buford, GA plans on visiting UT once summer begins.

-QB Sam Ehlinger has been speaking with the UT staff about taking the commitment of WR Camron Buckley. It's still a bit unclear if the staff wants to honor the offer that Coach Norvell made to Buckley last summer at the "Under the Lights" camp. Coach Williams wants to evaluate him in person, as he's not currently a priority with offers out to WR Omar Manning and WR Tyrell Shavers.

-LB Levi Jones of Austin Westlake is supposedly feeling UT more and more. The biggest competition right now appears to be LSU.

Scout reporting UT was supposed to see LB Anthony Hines of Plano East yesterday.

DT Marvin Wilson tweeted Bama is out of his recruitment. "Bo is gone, there goes Bama in my recruitment."

Per 24/7, Coach Jennings was at Houston Lamar today watching 2018 CB Anthony Cook.

Coach Bedford was at San Antonio Jay visiting OL Matthew Huhn.

All of Strong’s assistants are currently on the road recruiting and gathering information about prospects.

From what I was told, the goal is to hit as many campuses in this state to obtain information about players they want – and guys who might be flying under the radar. The staff will stay on the road until the end of May.

As we have previously reported, Strong’s top priority is competing for players inside the state of Texas. Even though it is impossible to lock down every top player from this state, the Longhorns wants to compete for each player.

That being said, Texas is still going to recruit players from outside of Texas.

Linebackers coach Brick Haley has the green light to recruit in Louisiana, and Texas is still interested in players from Florida. In fact, my sources in Florida told me Texas is extremely interested in two players from Lakeland High School – running back A.J. Davis and receiver James Robinson. For full disclosure, I graduated from Lakeland High School and have a lot of connections to the program.

Davis is leaning toward Oklahoma, while Robinson in interested in the University of Florida. I think Texas has a better chance of getting Davis’ attention, but was told Robinson is a fan of Strong and the staff, plus likes the spread offenses in the Big 12. As Texas fans know, Strong is more concerned about winning players in January and February (unless they are early enrolles) than obtaining a verbal commitment in April. Texas will take the pledges of players who want to commit early, but their method of turning up the heat when it counts has worked in their favor.

When coaches are on the road, they are required to give Mike Giglio, Texas’ director of player personnel, a progress report. Coaches are not allowed to have conversations with recruits on campus, but they can speak to the high school coach about a player and gather information, and academic qualifications typically are address during those conversations. After the fact finding mission is done, Giglio compiles the information obtained by coaches.

If you want to get an idea who many miles staff members are putting on rental cars, check out the Twitter page of assistant coach Jeff Traylor, who is constantly posting status updates. (Richardson)

Big news re Marvin Wilson eliminating Bama. Bo was doing some serious damage recruiting in Texas. ie. Kendall Jones, A' Shawn Robinson, etc...then two or three top db's.

I wouldn't take that tweet nearly as seriously as that reporter did. It's a long way until February. These kids throw up so much misdirection and bullsh*t on Twitter, too. Higdon says to ignore Twitter for pretty much anything other than basic factual info ("I will/won't be visiting X school this weekend" and the like), and I think that's sound advice. It's just a game for so many of these guys.

We certainly helped him in that regard when we hired him away from Bama and then gave him back to Bama. Just gave them a stronger foothold for DLs in our state. Glad to see him go.

He must have done something bad. Because they cut bait quickly. (that is how it is done....Baylor with your rape allowing coaches....Ole Miss with your coach giving out ca$h.....you gotta nip this stuff in the bud)

LB Anthony Hines of Plano East after receiving a visit from Coach Jean-Mary (Inside Texas):

"I always love going down to Austin, and it was great to have Coach BJ out here to see me today. He’s an awesome coach. We have a great relationship. I like him a lot.”

Per TFB:
Will Farrar: Fort Bend Travis (TX) OL Will Farrar received a visit from Texas DL coach Brick Haley on Tuesday. Farrar says he has lots of interest in Texas but hadn’t heard from them since he visited 2 weeks ago. At that time, it seemed Farrar was going to make another quick decision after decommitting from UCLA, but that is no longer the case. I was told by Farrar that he plans to take all five of his official visits before making a final decision and one school that will 100% get an official visit from him is LSU.

Right now it seems that LSU and Texas are his top options but one school that could really change things by offering is Texas A&M. Right now Texas only has 1 OL commitment (OG Xavier Newman) and I’d expect them to land 3-4 OL in the 2017 class depending on how the numbers fall. – (Andrew)

Bronson Boyd: A sleeper 2017 WR I’ve had my eye on for awhile is Arlington Oakridge (TX) WR Bronson Boyd. Boyd has seen his stock continue to rise with offers coming from Texas Tech, Arizona, Wisconsin, and more. I was told Texas had some interest in Boyd due to him being a great all around athlete (he can flat get it done on the basketball court as well). Boyd told me that Texas plans to come watch him in person on May 3rd. This could be one to keep an eye on down the line. – (Andrew)

CeeDee Lamb: Richmond Foster (TX) WR CeeDee Lamb decommitted from Oklahoma this morning. Lamb doesn’t hold a Texas offer but visited Austin multiple times last year before committing to the Sooners. I asked Lamb if he has heard from the Longhorn coaching staff at all recently and he told me he hadn’t. I’m not sure if they will pick up the communication with him since he is back on the recruiting market, but it seems LSU is the top choice for Lamb at the moment. – (Andrew)

A few notes form 24/7...

-Coach Jean-Mary will be in Florida on Monday visiting LB Dylan Moses.

-the talk that UT is sliding. or has been eliminated, in the recruitment of LB Baron Browning if false (Inside Texas has a report saying the same).

-while visiting Plano East last week, the coaches liked what they saw out of OL Casey Verhulst. He is now communicating with Coach Mattox.

From: Justin Wells LATEST ON LONGHORN COMMITS

a. Major Tennison

"Coach Traylor stopped by Bullard this week and he talked to my coach for a while," Tennison said. "Everything is still good with the Horns."

Despite websites proclaiming he's wavering, that's simply not the case. But like we've told you before, Strong tells commits to take those visits. To go see what other schools have to offer. He's crazy like that. It's a quiet confidence he exudes that players and parents pick up on and find endearing.

Tennison recently added Georgia and Florida offers. Both are trips he might take this summer.

"We will probably go see Georgia pretty soon, but no plans as of yet," Tennison said. "We will make it down to Florida at some point as well."

At the end of the day, Major loves Texas. He loves coach Traylor, the school, and everything the university has to offer. But he also wants to make sure he'll be used properly in this new offense. And I don't blame him. He's been assured even if he doesn't see Caleb Bluiett or Andrew Beck catch a lot of balls this fall, that's no indication of how he'll be used. He's different than those two. He's different than any tight end Texas has had in years.

Gilbert has no problem utilizing the TE position. He just needs a weapon like Major. As long as the Tennison family understands this, I feel strongly confident he'll be a Longhorn by NSD 2017.

b. Damion Miller

One of the top wideouts in 2017, John Tyler's Miller, received a visit from Jeff Traylor this week. And as we've stated since his Junior Day and Spring game visits in the last few months, the 4-star touchdown maker is still all Texas.

"Everything's cool," said Miller. "I'm still solid as ever."

I'll see Damion in person next Tuesday to catch up with him, 1-on-1. Always want to put my eyes on teammates Bryson Smith, Tre Allison, and Jantavious Mosley. As usual, the Lions are loaded for another playoff run in 2016.

c. Lagaryonn Carson

Nothing new to report here on the 5-star DL from East Texas other than coach Traylor stopped by Liberty-Eylau to see him this week. Besides Sam Ehlinger, there might not be a more solid pledge to the Longhorns. But that's not stopping other schools from pursuing. Namely, Texas A&M. I understand being diligent in your job, but how many times can the kid tell the Aggies 'no'? And A&M's DC John Chavis won't listen. Talk about wasting resources.

I'll see Carson on Monday for a more in-depth 1-on-1. Looking forward to seeing the big fella with a million-dollar smile.

3. THE X-MAN TALKS TEXAS

UT's newest commit, Xavier Newman, is a happy young man.

The Desoto 4-star and Opening invite is a 6-foot-3.5, 280-mound road grader with a nasty streak Janet Jackson has written a song about.

"I just loved the program and coach Strong had a big impression on me," said Newman.

He's also a fan of new OL coach, Matt Mattox.

"Coach Mattox is a great coach," Newman said. "(UT) likes me at guard, but also my versatility. I want to get back to Austin and attend Under the Lights this summer."

I still think Texas wants 3-4 offensive lineman in 2017, so I look for them to continue to pursue other prospects, perhaps even going out-of-state. I know Walker Little is still the top priority and that won't change. They still like McKinney North's Tyrese Robinson and Cypress Fair's Austin Deculus, both of who are probably long shots at this point. But knowing Strong, he'll continue to recruit them like they're leans.

4. ONE TO WATCH: Austin Hawley, safety - Gladewater

The 2017 defensive back from bEAST Texas is finally starting to get noticed and it's about damn time. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety has skills to pay the bills. He's a 4.5 40 guy, who has won back-to-back district titles in the 110.

Arkansas, SMU, and Tulsa are recruiting him right now, but he's yet to be offered. He's hoping the satellite camp ban will help get him exposure this summer and boost his stock. He's also got a 3.4 GPA and excels in the classroom.

On a personal note, Hawley is a kid you root for. He's lost both of his parents and his grandparents are unable to take care of him. He lives with a family friend and wants nothing more than to get out of Gladewater and start his life and college career. I'll be following closely. After posting his highlights yesterday, I had three schools call and ask about him. It's just one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Keep your fingers crossed.

5. QUICK NOTE ON 4-STAR WR

Richmond Foster's CeeDee Lamb de-committed from OU this morning. He told me he wants to keep his options open and see a few more schools. Texas might be one of those visits. Watch the 6-foot-3, 175-pound pass-catchers Hudl. He's one to keep an eye on.

Who said Browning was wavering?
There had been reports that it was down to a TCU/UCLA battle. Not true.

From: Eric Nahlin BARON BROWNING RESET

Sometimes I have to pick up the faint of heart recruitnik by the scruff of the neck and shake some sense into him. With rumors on other sites circulating Texas is losing ground on the Kennedale 5-star, this is one of those times.

A&M sites aren't going to have good information on this. A&M is out of it. Keep in mind negative Texas recruiting information has the same value on their boards as positive A&M recruiting information, of which there's little.

The TCU guys aren't getting their information from my source, and there isn't a better wealth of information than the person I talk to.

If you haven't heard, the prevailing notion is this is a TCU and UCLA battle. This was news to my source.

"I'm glad you called. I don't keep up with that stuff. I'm learning a lot (laughs). Baron's still wide open. He released his top 10 and that's about it. He doesn't have a leader. I can tell you Texas is right there. He wanted to go to the Spring game and was trying like crazy to go, but something came up with the family."

He would go on to tell me what happened. Basically something unexpected came up and it was stated it would be best if he was close to home. He was still trying to go to Texas despite this situation arising. "Him still trying to go to Texas should tell you a lot. Hell, me calling you should tell you a lot. I know there's other stories you could be chasing."

Indeed. I was also told some things I was asked not to share that strengthen my belief that Texas will be the team to beat when it's all said and done.

Browning has stated he may make a decision before the season but my source discounted that. "I doubt he does. He's going to take all five official visits, what's the point of making a commitment? He'll also go to Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Alabama this summer. Like I said, he's open."

This source raves about Charlie Strong and loves what he's building. I've mentioned before how happy he was for Strong when he beat OU after the horrendous week prior.

You may recall these quotes from Justin right after Junior Day. Baron himself stated, "We had another good talk with Strong as we always do but this time both of my parents were with me and he really impressed them and my parents aren't the type you can show some facilities and impress them. They want to know about the network, the alumni, the opportunities, academic advisors. They were blown away."

I had totally forgotten about these quotes and I was still optimistic on Browning to Texas. In talking to Justin about the conversation I had on Thursday, he reminded me of Baron's glowing remarks to him surrounding his visit.

This one is positive on all fronts.

I didn't feel it was my place to ask about the potential UCLA/GA situation for Baron's older brother. I'm supposed to go see the Brownings this month and may broach that subject.

I was also asked to keep some things 'off the record' that only make me feel more confident about UT's chances. That's happy hour fodder.

Tangentially, I love what Strong is going to do with Malik this season. Basically the football field is going to be one big freestyle for Jefferson, where he'll have the freedom to hunt and kill as he sees fit. Normally a coach would have to shelve the idea of doing this long term because good luck finding someone to replace 46, but Browning would be the natural replacement for this. When Browning says he hasn't talked to Texas about how he will be used I'm reminded of a friend of mine's favorite saying, "I can show you better than I can tell you."

Ok, So aggy was being aggy.
aggy recruiting info is pure propaganda. Keep in mind, optimistic reports are how they sell subscriptions, not facts. And the aggy fanbase laps up the misinformation gladly. Because better than reality.

Per TFB:
BJ Foster: Coach Strong doesn’t extend a lot of offers and certainly isn’t hasty when he does. So seeing an early offer is always significant. Last week Texas extended an offer to 2018 ATH, BJ Foster (Angelton, TX). In Foster’s case the offer wasn’t exactly early though as he already holds offers from schools like Baylor, OU, Texas A&M, TCU and others.

After the offer, Foster let us know that he plans on taking a visit to Texas this summer. Additionally Foster noted that he did grow up a Texas fan so one would certainly think the Horns are the early favorite. – (Super K)

Taquon Graham: I caught up with Temple (TX) DE Taquon Graham, who plans to make his commitment on May 27th. Graham let me know that right now, he doesn’t have any visits set up between now and his commitment date. He took 5 visits in the past few months, and 3 of them were to Texas. The Longhorns are in a very nice spot for Graham and commits Sam Ehlinger and Lagaryonn Carson are helping out with this one. – (Andrew)

Dayo Odeyingbo: I spoke with 2017 DE, Dayo Odeyingbo (Carrolton, TX) who told me that Texas stopped by to visit him. Odeyingbo said that he spoke to area coach, Charlie Williams, over the phone following the school visit.

If Graham does indeed commit to Texas later this month then I suspect they’ll be done at the defensive end position. But it’s a long way to signing day so Texas is obviously just making sure they’ve got alternate plans should they need it. – (Super K)

In addition to offering WR Devonta Smith (Amite, LA) yesterday, we also offered 4-star Lakeland (FL) RB AJ Davis:

TPGt8Ag.png

Strong ain't skeert. Cue aggys caterwauling about Texas recruiting OOS (even though they do it more than us and nobody notices or cares)

TFB reporting:

"We have been able to confirm that Texas will do satellite camps in the state of Texas. We have not confirmed yet whether any camps will be held outside of Texas.

In talking to a Florida source we are also told that Texas will hold their satellite camps with the Florida Gators. As of now we’ve been told that the Texas – Florida camp will be held in Houston and Dallas. Since Texas is holding their camps with Florida we would surmise that Texas will also attend camps hosted by Florida in Florida. However, given how rigorously coach Strong is recruiting the state of Texas, that is not a certainty until we are able to confirm it. – (Super K)"

"Jean-Mary was also at Lakeland HS to see RB AJ Davis, who was offered by Texas yesterday afternoon. It seems like Davis has some serious interest in the Longhorns and seems open to playing outside of the state of Florida, which is never a bad sign for an out of state target. – (Andrew)" * Higdon is tweeting a lot about AJ Davis. Higs does have a bunch of Florida connections and is a UF fan, but he seems pretty stoked. Who knows, we may have a shot.

Hornsports

The spring evaluation period is in full swing, and the Texas coaches hit the road with a mission on their minds.

While the primary objective will always be to see valued recruits and perform further evaluations, the Texas staff is also trying to re-establish a strong connection to Texas high school coaches. Jeff Traylor has been burning up the miles throughout east Texas, and the other members of the staff are pressing the flesh at high schools in their designated recruiting areas. We spoke to a coach in Fort Worth that met with Texas offensive line coach Matt Mattox last week. This particular coach is at a lower-level school with no players on the Texas radar, yet Mattox waited 20 minutes for him to be pulled out of class before sitting with him nearly an hour.

This coach told us that he was very impressed with Mattox, and said he could tell that the Texas staff was doing everything possible to establish the strong relationships with high school coaches that the Mack Brown staff benefited from for more than a decade. While this may seem like basics for a school like Texas, it was clear the coach we spoke with saw a change. He mentioned he was impressed that they called to confirm beforehand, and then actually showed up when they said they would. He made it clear that former Texas coach Bruce Chambers had not put in the same effort in the past.

As for Mattox himself, we were told that he came across as extremely down to earth, and appeared engaging and interested while talking with coaches. This is not surprising based on what we’ve been told in the past about him, but it’s safe to say the Longhorns are starting to make inroads to Texas high school coaches again.

+++++

We have a quick note on Cedar Hill wide receiver Camron Buckley. Buckley told us a few weeks ago he planned to make a commitment announcement today, but after talking to him this weekend it looks like he will push that timeline back. Buckley was offered by Texas during the Under the Lights camp last summer, but with new offensive coaches on board it seems that Texas wants to evaluate him during the spring before accepting a commitment. Buckley is also looking closely at Ole Miss and Miami, but he formed a bond with Texas quarterback commit Sam Ehlinger. If Texas chooses to take Buckley, we have strong indications they would be the destination for the talented WR. We will keep a close eye on this one and update you if anything else becomes available.

+++++

With the 2017 class under the microscope of spring evaluation, Texas got a jump on the 2018 class by extending an offer to Angleton athlete BJ Foster. Foster is an incredible prospect on both sides of the ball, and he is squarely in the mix to be the top player in the state for 2018. We spoke with Foster following his offer to get the goods on where Texas sits in his recruitment.

We asked Foster what a Texas offer meant to him, and he told us he was excited about it while also acknowledging he would take his time with the process. “They are a great school, but I’m still young and have lots of time to think about it,” said Foster. The Texas coaches haven’t had a lot of contact with Foster, but Clay Jennings reached out to the Angleton staff to let them know their star player had an offer on the table from Texas. Foster hasn’t been to campus yet, but he did tell us he plans to visit this summer.

While many kids in the state grow up watching Texas on Saturdays, Foster told us he didn’t really watch anyone growing up. “I really didn’t watch football when I was little. I had my mind somewhere else, but when Quandre (Diggs) was there I watched them all the time.” Angleton High School has been good to the Longhorns throughout the years. The Houston area program produced Quentin Jammer, DJ Monroe, and Quandre Diggs. Foster told us that Diggs and Monroe went to school with his sister and cousins, and he grew up around both of them. Diggs even reached out to Foster on twitter following the offer announcement to do some recruiting.

Foster plays both at running back and safety in high school, and he shows the talent to stick at either position at the next level. We asked him which position he preferred, and he wasted no time telling us which position and why. “Defensive back,” said Foster. “They get to deliver the hits, not take them.” While Foster told us he’s taking his time with the process, he made it clear that Texas is a heavy favorite for his services early on.

Holland on 247 reporting while Texas in the mix with S Jeffrey Okudah, he is still leaning out of state and the major players are tosu, bama, OU, Georgia, USC, LSU.

Not sure what the main goal of a satellite camp is? Is it for player evaluation, exposure, both? I always figured the less talent rich state schools would have them OOS for necessity. Kind of like Oklahoma State having several in Texas rather than relying on a bunch of Texas kids to drive up to Stillwater since your main recruiting base is OOS. Or holding them across the country as a lot of those players have no way of visiting your school outside of an official visit.

I would think the purpose of camps for a program like Texas would be getting kids on campus. I don't understand what purpose satellite camps serve in Dallas or Houston. Are there a lot of Dallas/Houston kids that can't make it to Austin? I realize that the camps we host there are always a few no shows due to schedules or travel issues, but I don't think the # of recruits that can't drive 3 hours on weekend is that large. If getting to a UT camp is important to you that's something that can be accomplished with little effort even if you are poor. Getting to Austin from Florida or California is another story.
