Yesterday there were 3 Farrar to aggy CB's (Hamm, Holland, an ND guy). Hamm put out a #YESSIR alert, apparently Jim Turner could offer Farrar this afternoon (Hamm's not sure) and he "could shut things down immediately". Guess Hamm changed it because he has Farrar CB'd to Texas as of now.

EJ Holland: Texas still in mix for elite pass rusher K'Lavon Chaisson - a maybe for this weekend

K’Lavon Chaisson is a quiet person by nature. And when it comes to talking about recruiting, well, Chaisson isn’t a big fan of it. But the four-star defensive end out of Galena Park North Shore did shut down rumors about his recruitment. There were some rumblings that Baylor and LSU are the clear frontrunners and that Texas is not in the picture. Chaisson, however, said that’s not the case. “I don’t want to get into it on where I stand with schools, but I am interested (in Texas),” Chaisson said. “I want to make a visit there and see everything. It’s a cool program. I like it. Right now, I’m just enjoying the process.”

One of the biggest reasons Chaisson is still looking at Texas is the defensive scheme. Chaisson said he sees himself fitting in perfectly at the ‘Fox’ end thanks to his speed and pass rushing skills. And he’s right. At 6-foot-4, 211 pounds, Chaisson is one of the best pass rushers in the nation and was a first team all-state selection after helping North Shore capture the 6A DI championship. “I’m interested in Texas because I like the way that I would be used,” Chaisson said. “They have that ‘Fox’ end. That’s really what I want to play. I see myself as a pass rusher, so it would be a good fit.”

Chaisson added that he has a great relationship with the Texas staff and is definitely feeling the love from both defensive coordinator Vance Bedford and defensive line coach Brick Haley. “Texas is pushing me really hard and sharing good thoughts,” Chaisson said. “Coach Bedford and Coach Haley keep messaging me and letting me know that they really want me.” The Under Armour All-American is ranked as the No. 7 weak-side defensive end in the country and No. 16 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Per 24/7, TE Chance McLeod of Victoria East will be visiting practice today.

He and Parker Eichenburger are probably the two leaders for the big second TE slot after Major Tennison.

Rumors that there could be two commits this weekend.

I'm guessing one is Graham.

I have no clue who the other is.

Is it just me or do we have more early commits this year than the previous? I almost want them to hold off and commit in Jan/Feb like in years past so we don't have a bunch of decommits.

Other would be Tucker or Buckley.
I have heard conflicting stories on Buckley, that he wanted to commit a while back but his offer was from the previous offensive staff and the current offensive staff wanted to evaluate him further.

Yeah, I like the way it's been going for us at the end. And I like it where Rumlin has pushed for early commits, stopped recruiting everybody else, subsequently watched his early commits leave in the Fall and then found out it was too late to get in on everyone else.

Very good list of recruits coming in. Most on the list are 4* on rivals and the majority hold a Texas offer. Several elite young guys mixed in as well.

reporting CB Chevin Calloway of Dallas Bishop Dunne will be in Austin tomorrow. Big news considering he hasn't shown much interest in UT up until this point.

Here are Thursday's notes on Texas targets.

— Austin Westlake outside linebacker Levi Jones said he would likely attend the Texas spring game on Saturday. Jones was recently on campus for an unofficial visit and is high on the Longhorns.

— Arizona State commit and three-star Mansfield Lake Ridge inside linebacker Loren Mondy is also a maybe for the game. Mondy attended UT junior day and is on the radar.

— Manvel safety Derrick Tucker informed me that he would not be able to make the trip to Texas this weekend. Tucker was on campus for junior day and hopes to return later this offseason.

— Katy tight end Parker Eichenberger committed to Houston today and cancelled his weekend visit to Texas. Eichenberger said he is firmly committed to the Cougars and will visit there instead.

— Brother Martin (La.) wide receiver Jeremy Singleton has opted to go to LSU’s spring game. The three-star prospect was pondering making an unofficial visit to Texas this weekend.

— Four-star 2018 Sachse defensive back Isaiah Humphries has canceled his weekend trip to Texas and will instead head to Notre Dame. Humphries visited Texas in late February.

Fort Bend Travis offensive lineman Will Farrar opened up his recruitment after decommitting from UCLA last weekend. One of the schools Farrar is now considering is Texas. He made an unofficial visit to Austin on Thursday afternoon to take in a Longhorns practice and meet with the staff. “It went well," Farrar said. "I showed up, and I watched practice. I spent time with Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach (Matt) Mattox. Coach Mattox showed us around. We were here about four hours. The facilities are nice. I had never seen the facilities before, so it was cool going around.”

A big reason for Farrar's heavy interest in Texas is his strong relationship with Mattox, which dates back to his time at Tulsa. Farrar communicated often with Mattox when he was being courted by the Golden Hurricane and has now met him a handful of times in person. Farrar’s favorite part of the trip was getting to speak with Strong and seeing how he runs practices. The 6-foot-5, 290 pounder was able to view a practice without pads and learn where he would fit into the offense. “It’s a practice before the spring game, so it was just helmets," he said. "It was kind of light. They ran a lot of tempo and screens, so it was cool. Coach Mattox told me I would start off playing inside. He said things could change. I could move outside. I’m capable of doing that, but I’m probably going to start out at guard.”

Farrar will take a trip this weekend to LSU. There are no immediate trips planned afterwards, but he told Horns 247 that he would be back at Texas soon. He is also interested in Houston, LSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. UCLA is currently out of the picture, but he did not rule out the possibility of them jumping back into the mix. “I’m just going to enjoy it,” Farrar said of the recruitment process. "I’ll take my visits and go see what the schools are all about. We’ll just see where it goes.” A three-star prospect, Farrar is ranked as the No.13 offensive guard in the nation and No. 51 overall prospect in the state of Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

Austin Westlake offensive tackle Stephan Zabie does not hold an offer from Texas. But that hasn’t stopped his teammate and Texas quarterback pledge Sam Ehlinger from constantly being in his ear about the Longhorns. “My friend, Sam Ehlinger, is committed there, and he’s been talking to me about it,” Zabie said. “He loves Texas. He’s all Texas. He’s a hard commit. I’ve been checking it out. I see it from the outside, so it looks great.”

Zabie has only played one year of football. Originally from the west side of Philadelphia, he’s spent three years in Austin. The rising lineman made an unofficial visit in the fall and said he liked the program overall. “I like the UT campus,” Zabie said. “It’s a great campus, has a great program and is a great school. If they offer, I will check it out and see how it fits me.”

Despite playing just one season, the 6-foot-5, 290 pounder is already up to 12 offers. Oklahoma and Texas A&M are his current leaders. “It’s going pretty well,” Zabie said about his recruitment. “It’s really exciting because my first season to play football was this past season. I’m excited to get the exposure and compete.” Zabie will make an unofficial visit to Texas this weekend. A three-star prospect, Zabie is ranked as the No. 76 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 97 overall prospect in the state of Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

The Scoop From: Eric Nahlin

MARVIN WILSON

I caught up with someone who knows Wilson (Bellaire Episcopal) and the words the monster defensive tackle used to describe his Tuesday visit were “really good” and that the team looked “strong and fast.”

There’s no reason to be excited or concerned at this point. Texas just needs to hold fast and work the family angle. If Texas wins this recruitment (and it has a better chance than I initially thought), then family and proximity will have played a big part.

Late momentum on the level we saw last year will go a long way towards securing guys like Wilson, Browning, Hines, and potentially Okudah. That’s why some such as myself are optimistic with recruiting right now.

WILL FARRAR

Farrar (Fort Bend Travis) was one of the first names being discussed in the class of 2017 and admittedly I wasn’t all that high on him then like I was with Jack Anderson. That changed when I focused on him after his Texas offer. He reminds of the guard version of Zach Shackelford. He’s a mauler.

He visited Texas yesterday and had this to say beforehand: “I hear from Texas every day. Every coach on their staff hits me up on Twitter and we talk. I’m looking forward to seeing the environment and the way Coach Mattox runs practice. I’m going to be a little bit late to practice but I’m going to stay for a couple hours later.”

After Farrar briefly stated, “It went good! Really got to spend some time with Coach Mattox.”

Farrar was committed to UCLA for a time but recently opened things up. He’s stated A&M was a childhood favorite but the Ags have yet to offer. He visited College Station on Wednesday, Austin on Thursday, and will be in Baton Rouge this weekend.

The 6-foot-5, 290 pound Farrar won’t turn 18 until he arrives on a college campus.

SPRING GAME VISITORS

2017 (*Texas commit)

This is a quality list, especially when you consider priority targets like Marvin Wilson and Will Farrar already visited this week. We did remove Lagaryonn Carson (travel issues).

*Sam Ehlinger, QB - Austin Westlake

*Damion Miller, WR - Tyler John Tyler

*Major Tennison, TE - Bullard

*Kobe Boyce, CB - Lake Dallas: Boyce visited A&M last week as a courtesy, and after Kevin Sumlin tried to pressure him to open up his new commitment, Boyce declined. That’s a tactic Sumlin would use on some others, e.g., Damion Miller. Boyce will be a Longhorn.

Baron Browning, LB - Kennedale: In my opinion Browning is the state’s best prospect. It’s always good getting a 5-star back on campus. A spirited contest which highlights the young athletes will go a long way towards keeping Browning’s interest high. This is just another brick in the road to securing his commitment by early January.

Walker Little, OT - Bellaire Episcopal: Little’s about as wide open as it gets. He recently visited Ole Miss and will visit Stanford later in the spring. Scuttle here is all over the map which is usually the case when a player is this open. Any face time with Matt Mattox is a good thing in this recruitment.

Anthony Hines, LB - Plano East: See: Baron Browning. These two have very similar recruitments when it comes to Texas. Texas just has to stay the course and win some games and things have a great chance to end well.

Taquon Graham, DE - Temple: We’ve long maintained Texas looks good here and we’ve predicted him to Texas. Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later. This will be Graham’s second visit to Austin this month. I hear he wants to get a better idea of what the campus is like and to see the academic side.

Omar Manning, WR - Lancaster: I’m going to reverse course here a tad and say TCU is the team to beat, that Texas has more ground to make-up, and that UT will become a big factor likely after this weekend. One subscriber had a candid and unprovoked conversation with a relative of Manning and this relative stated TCU was the team to beat. I hollered at my TCU source and he said they are the team to beat but that they’re wary of Texas. “You know how these things can go.”

Myles Jones, DB - Magnolia West: The Kobe Boyce situation in reverse; the difference being Strong will play the long game and not pressure him to open his recent Aggie commitment up. Jennings is a big fan of Jones so this will be an interesting one to watch.

Josh Thompson, CB - Nacogdoches: Thompson certainly looks the part both build-wise and athletically. He’s a guy who should have a big spring. To his credit Strong was on Thompson last year amidst the heated Brandon Jones recruitment. Smart.

Montrell Estell, ATH- Hooks: We feel like Baylor is recruiting the athlete the hardest and Texas has some WR’s ahead of him on the covet list (Manning, Tyrell Shavers, Manny Netherly). What makes Estell interesting is he could play DB on the next level.

Herb Sparks, ATH - Wilmer Hutchins

Cam Buckley, WR - Cedar Hill: I discussed him last week. If he tries to commit I honestly don’t know what will happen but I suspect he’ll be asked to slow things down.

Xavier Newman, OL - Desoto: Said the recent guard offer: “I’m just looking forward to seeing how their program is and the coaches are with the players. Also, how the school and facilities are.” Newman also went on to say he’s unsure when he’ll commit and he’s just waiting on the right time. A&M feels like he’s theirs to lose and that’s the case heading into the weekend but Texas will never have a better opportunity to capture Newman’s interest than this weekend. These are the situations where it’s possible to see a big bounce in a recruitment. If he ends up at Texas it will remind of the Denzel Okafor commitment. Just replace A&M with TCU.

Stephen Zabie, OL - Austin Westlake: It’s a good year at the position when an upside tackle like Zabie doesn’t have an offer yet. Right now he is calling A&M and OU his leaders and both have offered. Zabie’s unsure of how close he is to receiving a Texas offer but I get the feeling that’s what he’s waiting on. Managing 0-line numbers and recruit personalities will be interesting this cycle.

Mohamed Sanogo, LB - Plano West: Texas can’t be left without a mike in this class, and with Hines being so damn good, all the staff can do is diligently recruit him and let his decision play out while building a relationship with Sanogo, a player Texas may have to offer late. The later your offer is to a player the stronger your pre-existing relationship needs to be in order to land him unless the player has very limited options. Sanogo has limited options right now but that will change.

Levi Jones, LB - Austin Westlake: Sam's best friend will join him.

Chevin Calloway, CB - Dallas Bishop Dunne: One of the top corners for 2017 will be there. It's a start.

2018

Jaylen Waddle, ATH - Bellaire Episcopal (Holds UH and Ole Miss offers)

Jalen Mayden, QB - Garland Sachse

Jalen Preston, WR - Manvel: I’m not convinced he shows up based on the hard to decipher message I got back from Preston. He’s highly rated at this very early stage in the Class of 2018.

Alston Orji, LB - Rockwall: He’s an offer, imo, and after talking to someone in the know he’s an offer to Texas. I’m not sure if he’s offered this weekend simply because of the way UT operates but he’ll be offered at some point. Important in this recruitment is to win over the father. Do that and it’s daylights for the competition. Strong has done well to continue Mack Brown’s success with players of West African descent.

Anthony Cook, DB - Houston Lamar: Another player who looks like an offer. Cook’s mother is Eric Cuffee’s 1st cousin. Lamar is absolutely loaded at DB with 4-5 guys who will play D1 between the 2017 and 2018 class.

Joshua Moore, ATH - Yoakum and Jordan Moore, ATH - Yoakum: Justin will have more on the small school twins.

Recruits heading to Austin, freshmen expectations, and more.

1. Boyd, Buechele, Collin, and Shack - Freshmen Expectations

While most of their friends are preparing for graduation parties and prom, these four are prepping for the Orange-White Scrimmage. UT had a handful of early enrollees from the 2016 class. There's been growing pains, confidence boosts, and a potential superstar in the making. I spoke to someone close to the group this week. He mentioned the good and bad.

On Boyd: The guy we all thought would play fullback in Austin is currently running with the 2's at linebacker. He's shedding the baby fat (arrived at 245, now 234) and becoming a lean, mean tackling machine. Demarco never imagined he'd play this quick so he's still swimming some with the schemes and formations. He thought he might sit for a couple of years, then work his way into the lineup. He's a humble kid who often doesn't give himself enough credit for what he's accomplished. He's the backup at Mike right now, along with Edwin Freeman. I fully expect to see him play a freshman and make an impact on special teams.

On Buechele: Shane could actually start Week 1 vs Notre Dame. In some ways, we all thought this was possible. Texas didn't have a guy on the roster that was the sure-fire starter, and Shane knew this during his entire recruitment. Having played in a similar system at Lamar, adding Gilbert was just the cherry on top. Shane has had his bumps and bruises - he's thrown picks, he's had an adjustment to the speed of the UT DBs, and he's been popped in practice which led to a fight. Spring football at its best.

On Johnson: We knew Collin had game, we just didn't know how quickly he would adapt to the D1 level. But it's safe to say he's been the brightest spot of the incoming freshmen. He's been downright unguardable. Factor in he's going against Hill, Davis, and Boyd in practice, and that's even more impressing. Texas stole this kid from Cali and the rest of the college football world will soon know come this fall. He's the one I'm anxious to watch at tomorrow's Orange-White game. Ocho Cinco 2.0 is the new age of Texas wide receivers.

On Shackelford: Instead of studying for senior finals, Zach is going over protection calls for tomorrow's Spring game. Think about that. When our own Chris Hall spoke highly on the 18-year old from Belton, we listened. The fact a true freshman QB and center could be lined up vs Notre Dame is something. But by all accounts, he'll be ready. If you ask him, he's been preparing for this his entire life.

2. Omar Manning. The 4-star wideout from Lancaster will be on hand for tomorrow's glorified scrimmage. He's one of the best in-state pass catchers for 2017 and Texas is recruiting him accordingly.

"(Texas) is really showing me a lot of love right now," said Manning. "I'm ready to see what the new offense looks like. I also want to meet the new coaches and get a feel for the school as a whole and ask questions. I have a lot to ask."

Manning dropped a Top 5 schools list recently and Texas wasn't one of them. That's starting to change, according to Manning.

"I really like coach Traylor, coach Williams, and coach Gilbert," Manning said. "They are great coaches I can relate to."

TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, and Okie State are considered the front runners at the moment with the Horned Frogs and Bears thought to be his leaders, per Eric. But if UT continues its hot pursuit of Manning, that could all change. One visit at a time.

3. Baron Browning ready to return. The top LB in Texas for 2017 has missed Austin lately. That should be words to all Texas fans ears.

"I'm just really looking forward to being back down there (Austin)," Browning said, who recently announced he'll be playing in the Army All American Bowl after his senior year. "I talk to Texas all the time."

Browning continues to show his freak ability after winning district in the 100-meters (h/t @brownrecluse) this week with a 11.21 after 11.07 in the prelims. "I was crushing them boys," Browning told me this morning. Indeed you were, BB.

I still think Browning is UT's to lose at this point. And his pledge would go a long way towards the Horns garnering Anthony Hines commitment as well. The thought of them playing beside each other is appealing in many ways to the 5-star duo. Playing beside Malik Jefferson helps too.

Browning and his family will leave for Austin either this evening or early in the morning. This continues to trend Texas.

4. Texas pursuing Alabama pledge. If the Horns can't find a talented TE in-state for 2018, then they aren't trying. Spring Dekaney 5-star Malcolm Epps is the latest example. He took in a UT practice this week, and despite being solid to Bama, Texas opened his eyes.

"It was amazing," said Epps, of his trip to Austin. "They (Strong and Traylor) were telling me they need a TE like me in this new offense. They talked about how my family could see me and how it's close to home. They are a home state school so I'm keeping my eyes on them."

As I was texting with Epps, something happened. He was offered. Not bad for the 6-foot-6, 220-pound tight end. He won't be at the Spring game but wants to come back to Austin sometime this summer.

It's early on this one, but Texas has a shot. How good of a shot is yet to be determined. Getting good intel on an Alabama pledge is a nice start. Just stay the course.

5. The Moore Twins. They're back.

The talented twins from Yoakum will once again be in Austin for an unofficial visit this weekend. They attended UT's scrimmage two Saturday's ago before shining at the Opening Regionals in Houston the following day.

"I'm more than ready to get back," said Joshua, who plays WR and safety. "Austin never fails to impress me. I know plenty about it. Austin is a special place for us."

His brother agrees.

"Texas is already one of my favorite schools," Jordan said, who also plays WR and CB. "I love it down there. My mom graduated from Texas so I've liked UT for awhile. They'll be up there for awhile and always be a big factor."

It's safe to say Texas the Moore twins are a package deal. They won't come out and say it, but it seems obvious when talking to them. Both are at the point they are loving the recruiting process, but remember they'll just be juniors come this fall. Long way to go here.

In case you are wondering, they are both takes.

Of note; Liberty-Eylau DL and Texas commit Lagaryonn Carson will not attend the Spring game due to travel issues. He's going to try to make it in sometime this summer.

Quotable quote:

"I'm so ready to get back," said Brandon Jones, about Austin. "It's about to be home. I really can't wait."

Why is there not one peep about what the recruits thought of the spring game?...we had so many in for the weekend....were they all pissed off or what?

2017 is going to be one awesome recruiting class.

Was told that Walker Little had a very positive meeting with Texas offensive line coach Matt Mattox before the spring game. His parents are loving the visit so far, and Texas has made it a point to roll out the red carpet for him. While Ole Miss is a major threat, Texas has to love where it sits with Little at this time based on what I was told

This is actually big news. We need a K badly. What we have right now doesn't cut it.

Good news for special teams. OrangeBloods reporting all-state K Chris Naggar of Arlington High has been accepted into UT and will be discussing his enrollment with the coaches soon. If they ask him to report in May for summer school, that will be the plan.

Texas sent out its first offer of the evaluation period on Tuesday when it extended a scholarship to James Clemons (AL) strong-side defensive end LaBryan Ray. The Longhorns had almost no contact with Ray prior to the offer, so it came as a pleasant surprise to the four-star prospect. “I’m just blessed,” Ray said. “I got on the phone with Coach (Brick) Haley, and we talked for a little bit. Then he told me he was offering me a scholarship. I was definitely excited. I was really happy.” While there hadn’t been much communication between Texas and Ray, Haley had his eye on him for a while. After all, Haley played with Ray’s father at Alabama A&M in the 80s. “I felt comfortable talking to him because my dad had told me about him,” Ray said. “My dad was an offensive lineman and Coach Haley was a linebacker, so they would go head up. I liked him, and my dad said some great things about him.”

One of the most sought after prospects in the state of Alabama, Ray holds offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma and a slew of other major programs. Alabama is considered the early frontrunner in his recruitment. Ray also has high interest in Michigan and Notre Dame and will visit both schools this summer. He plans to release a Top 10 at some point in the near future. So does Texas have a legitimate shot? “I’m definitely interested,” Ray said. “I grew up watching Vince Young and guys like that. They have a lot of tradition. I know Coach (Charlie) Strong has had success in the past and what he’s doing now is eye-opening.”

At 6-foot-4, 270 pounds, Ray is ranked as the No. 5 strong-side defensive end in the country and No. 8 overall prospect in the state of Alabama, according to 247Sports Composite.

This has nothing to do with the status of JK Dobbins but rather the fact that UT is really high on Carter now. With that said, LSU and Texas A&M are the heavy frontrunners in his recruitment.

— A lot has changed in the last 24 hours in the recruitment of DeSoto offensive lineman Xavier Newman. Remember, Newman listed Colorado as his top school in yesterday's story with Texas close behind. But from what I have been able to gather, Colorado has completely fallen off the grid and has been replaced by Texas Tech, which made a strong push for him yesterday. Texas, however, now seems to have vaulted into that top spot ahead of his decision. A source told me that 'things are looking really good for Texas right now.' A&M no longer appears to be a factor.

— I checked in with a source close to Temple defensive end Taquon Graham yesterday, and nothing has changed. If Graham committed today, it would be Texas. TCU is still trying to work its way back in the mix as is Texas A&M, but there is no reason to believe they will sway him between now and May 27 — his decision date. Graham is as close to a lock as you can get.

— A name to keep an eye on during the evaluation period is five-star Clinton (MS) running back Cam Akers. It's 'late' in his process so Texas might not offer, but they are at least going to give him a look. He holds a number of major offers and is ranked as the No. 2 running back in the country.

Horns247 Nightly Notes Here are Tuesday's notes on Texas targets.

— Both Oklahoma and Ole Miss stopped by Lake Dallas today to see Texas cornerback commit Kobe Boyce. The three-star prospect remains firmly committed to the Longhorns at this time.

— Shawnee (OK) offensive lineman Creed Humphrey received a big offer from Alabama. Texas recently offered Humphrey and hosted him for an unofficial visit. He has some interest.

— La Grange running back J.K. Dobbins notched a new offer from Florida. An Ohio State commit, Dobbins is keeping the lines of communication open with a few schools, including Texas.

— Ole Miss is the latest school to extend an offer to four-star Plano East defensive tackle Deiontae Watts. Texas offered earlier this offseason, but Oklahoma appears to be the team to beat.

— Katy Taylor defensive end Max Wright picked up a new offer from Oklahoma today. Texas was one of the first programs to offer the four-star 2018 prospect. He is ranked as the No. 4 strong-side defensive end in his class.

Way too early 2017 class By: Eric Nahlin

Though Texas will miss on plenty of those names, even some who may seem farfetched at this point will end up in Austin if the team can simply improve by three games.

With the exception of Nick Saban, Charlie Strong does the best job in the country of creating late momentum in recruiting. We've written volumes on the reasons: he leaves many slots open which creates a snowball effect when it's most needed, he gets recruits to buy-in and #believe despite poor seasons, he relates to prospects and parents alike, his track record for development is as good as anyone's, etc.

Assuming Texas wins eight, Strong and the staff will be able to sell trajectory, a young and exciting roster on both sides of the ball, a by God quarterback (seriously, it has to be divined), and, perhaps most important going forward, an improving ability to sell the University away from the football field and foster a family environment.

Essentially, Strong's pitch is becoming more and more fine tuned thanks to his ability to collate his strengths with Mack Brown's.

This ability casts an even wider net on the trail, but just as importantly helps thwart other school's sales pitches, some which might not be on the up and up.

Since I believe Texas will win eight games in 2016, I'm bullish on how I think the class will finish. Keeping in mind recruiting is almost entirely unpredictable and filled with plot twists.

QB Sam Ehlinger, Westlake (Westlake, TX) - TEXAS: Coach Ehlinger as far as recruiting goes.

RB JK Dobbins, La Grange (La Grange, TX) - fOHIO STATE: I'm riding with this until JK tells me not to.

WR Damion Miller, John Tyler (Tyler, TX) - TEXAS: Texas has the offense. Texas will have the quarterbacks. I'm feeling good here.

WR Mannie Netherly, Crosby (Crosby, TX) - TEXAS A&M: Tate's a flighty diva to put it mildly. Sumlin has issues, to put it mildly. The UT offense has caught Netherly's eye. I'm doing simple math here.

WR Tyrell Shavers, Lewisville (Lewisville, TX): He doesn't talk a whole lot but the little I've interacted with him has given me confidence. He seems like a kid who will gravitate to the personalities on campus and obviously the offense suits him. He's raw as a route runner but can play early because of the nature of the offense.

TE Major Tennison, Bullard (Bullard, TX) - TEXAS: Tennison's a key piece because he's so rare from a size/skill standpoint. I like his ability in this offense because he affords Texas the ability to keep the tempo up while transitioning seamlessly from 11 personnel to what amounts to 10 without having to substitute.

OT Walker Little, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX): I was talking to a friend the other day and stated, "eight years ago Little to Texas would be a done deal because he's a 'Texas' type of kid.'" I'm starting to feel he'll end up at Texas in 2017 too.

OT Stephan Zabie, Westlake (Austin, TX): No offer yet but he has such a high ceiling I just can't imagine they don't extend one. And if they do, I like him to follow Ehlie.

OG Xavier Newman, Desoto (Desoto, TX): We've discussed him a lot in the past couple days. Things are looking good here and he'll be a better take than his composite ranking (86) indicates.

OL Grayson Reed, Cy Creek (Houston, TX) - TEXAS A&M: Admittedly he seems happy with his recent commitment to A&M so obviously I'm projecting here. Texas may need some help with another middling season for A&M. I'm not sure they don't just let Reed go and focus elsewhere. I have him here because I needed a feasible fourth.

DL Lagaryonn Carson, Liberty-Eylau (Texarkana, TX) - TEXAS: One of the early must-gets has been in the fold for sometime.

DT Marvin Wilson, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX): Yes, I'm going there. Proximity plus my prediction of Little to Texas plays a part here. UT is virtually the only school I can see the duo continuing being teammates.

DE Taquon Graham, Temple (Temple, TX): Somebody retweeted one of my tweets not to long ago that read to the effect, "Texas needs to go by Temple and see Taquon Graham and Davion Curtis." The initial tweet was a full year ago. Needless to say if Graham pulls the trigger, it'll be a big get. We feel real good here.

WDE No clue, can't venture a guess. I think K'Lavon Chaisson and Robert Beal will both give fans hope but right now I don't see either having a great chance. I do think Texas has a better chance with Chaisson, however, as he knows he's a good fit for the defense and his in-person/on-campus recruitment hasn't really begun. UT definitely needs a pass rushing WDE in this class, though Hager making the transition (for now) helps numbers and some guys who could help are on the way.

OLB Baron Browning, Kennedale (Kennedale, TX): There's talk TCU is the favorite and if it's not them it will be UCLA. A TCU moderator has said UCLA may try and hire Baron's older brother as a GA. If that happens then all bets are off. UCLA wouldn't make that hire without a prior understanding. I don't know if any of that's true. What I do know is Strong landed Browning's kindred spirits, Malik Jefferson and Jeffrey McCulloch, in back-to-back cycles when others elsewhere thought they were lost causes. I'm going to stick to my read and the feedback I'm getting on this one.

ILB Anthony Hines, Plano East (Plano, TX): Hines is another huge need even if you're encouraged like I was with Anthony Wheeler on Saturday. He's an inside linebacker with outside athleticism. I'm a bit worried about him going OOS but often when a recruitment makes too much sense it swings in that school's direction.

OLB Levi Jones, Westlake (Austin, TX): I'm going to swim against the currents somewhat here and predict Strong wins this recruitment after building a trusting relationship with Jones' parents. For a family with the Jones' means, proximity isn't a big deal like it is with others, but as a former NFL linebacker himself, Robert Jones will have to love a scheme that highlights linebacker athleticism. If Jones doesn't make it into the class, I think the third linebacker will be someone who has yet to hit the public radar.

S Derrick Tucker, Manvel (Manvel, TX): If Strong operated like most coaches and used car salesmen, I think Tucker would already be in the class, but Strong isn't one to pressure for early commitments. I love Delpit. I love Okudah. I like Barnes. I wouldn't pick Texas for any, though UT likely has the best chance for Okudah at this time, which is telling on the other two. Both Delpit and Barnes will visit at some point but there are a lot of built in negatives Texas is facing with each.

CB Kobe Boyce, Lake Dallas, (Lake Dallas, TX) - TEXAS: Lil Mamba brings a lot to the table and to the class as a possible field corner who won't be a commitment you have to baby and nurture through the process.

CB Kary Vincent, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX): I don't have high confidence with this one, but he always gives Justin positive feedback and I know, while he coveted a Florida offer and in fact politicked for it, he's not showing much Gatah love as before. Of course with his dad being a former A&M wide receiver they'll be a factor, but they were quite late to the party and my hot-stove speculation is Sumlin is sitting on a hot-stove.

CB Again, no idea here. I could see Texas picking away at Chevin Calloway. His recruitment basically just started this past weekend with his visit and interaction with the coaches. I could also see an athletic stud like Timarcus Davis or Langston Frederick earning a scholarship. Or, Strong could just go to Louisiana, Florida, or elsewhere and use his evaluation x-ray vision to see something other schools are missing in a sleeper.

K LOL, wtf is a kicker

It's important to keep in mind with big-name early enrollees like Baron Browning, Anthony Hines, and JK Dobbins announcing well before NSD, Texas could get a late bounce that catches the eye of other big-name recruits.

Keys to the class: win a Hateful 8 (is that a good movie?) then land Browning and Hines.

We're nearly guaranteed a wild cycle yet again.

Great take. Kid was blowing up at those camps. Much better than his ranking.

He's a unique prospect bc he has played OT, OG, and C all in one season. So you know he's smart. Watch his film and he's every bit as nasty as Shack who has came in and started for us this spring. I've seen this kid up close and personal he's WAY better than his rankings. Very quick feet and very athletic for his size. Could make for a helluva guard prospect. Him and Vahe pulling and smashing people? I can see it now!

Here are Wednesday's notes on Texas targets. Horns247 Nightly Notes: Latest on UT prospects

— As mentioned on the board last night, Bullard tight end Major Tennison notched new offers from Colorado and Florida. Right now, things remain the same. Tennison is committed to Texas, but he will continue to listen to and visit other schools throughout the process. He really wants to see the Longhorns get the tight end involved this season.

— Port Arthur Memorial CB Kary Vincent added a new offer from Arizona. TCU still appears to be in the lead for Vincent, but he has interest in Texas and wants to make a visit soon.

— Texas commit Damion Miller was named an Under Armour High School Wide Receiver of the Year Finalist. Miller is still listening to other schools, but his commitment to Texas has been growing stronger as of late. Miller sent me a DM saying he was impressed and can't wait to get to Texas. I couldn't really do a full interview with him since his phone is broken, but I will see him early this spring. IMO, his commitment has grown stronger over the last month, and he really does like the new offense.

— Texas Tech put an offer on the table for Carrollton Ranchview athlete Dayo Odeyingbo. He is one to watch this spring. I’m told that Texas really likes him as a tight end.

— Another prospect to keep an eye on is fast-rising Flower Mound Marcus cornerback Matt Hankins, who also notched an offer from Texas Tech. He was a teammate of 2016 signee Andrew Fitzgerald.

Barton Simmons: Texas getting Xavier Newman on the way up

In the commitment of offensive lineman Xavier Newman, Texas is getting a guy on his way up in the class of 2017. I had a chance to watch Newman at The Opening Dallas Regional, an event that was loaded with elite offensive linemen. Despite four-stars everywhere, Newman and his handful of offers and low three-star ranking was the best lineman there. He walked away with the offensive line MVP award and an invite to The Opening Finals and he's moved way up in the 247Sports rankings to a high three-star.

At the event Newman backed up what he shows on film. He's got a real toughness to him, he plays with great balance and athleticism and he's able to win with leverage. At 6-foot-2.5, 272 pounds, Newman isn't an overpowering guy right now but he's got good weight and the ability to continue to fill out. He's not a sloppy kid. He's an athlete on the line. As Texas continues to transition to a fast-paced, high-rep offense, Newman seems to be a great fit. He can play three positions along the offensive front and as he gets bigger and stronger, he has a chance to be dominant.

Currently ranked as the No. 22 offensive guard in the country according to 247Sports Composite, Newman will have an opportunity to continue to raise that ranking with his padded workouts this summer at The Opening Finals.

E.J. Holland: Texas at the top of Walker Little's list

One of the biggest targets on campus this past weekend — literally — was Houston Bellaire Episcopal offensive lineman Walker Little. At 6-foot-8, 305 pounds, Little is a monster tackle and one of the state’s most sought after recruits. Texas has been making him a priority for the last year and took a big step forward in his recruitment on Saturday. “I had a great time on the visit this weekend,” Little said. “I loved getting to hang out with the players and the recruits. I thought the offense looked much better than it did last year.”

Little made the trip along with his parents. After watching the Longhorns take the field, the Little family stayed behind and met with both offensive line coach Matt Mattox and head coach Charlie Strong. “I definitely built on my relationship with Coach Mattox and Coach Strong,” Little said. “Most of our talks were just casual. It was more about getting to know each other better. I liked them.” Texas also made a big impression on Little’s parents — it was their first time getting to meet with Mattox. After the meeting, Little’s parents enjoyed Austin, while Little spent some quality time with some of the players.

So where does Texas sit in Little’s recruitment after his latest visit? “They are still at the top of my list as always,” Little said. “But I feel much more comfortable with the coaches and players.” While Texas is in very good position early on, it will still have to fight off a number of major programs. Little plans to make unofficial visits to Texas A&M and Stanford in the near future. Ole Miss, where two of his siblings go to school, is also a big player. A four-star prospect, Little is ranked as the No. 25 offensive tackle in the country and No. 21 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Cameron Brock: Four-star OL Stephan Zabie wants Texas offer

Austin Westlake offensive lineman Stephan Zabie was one of a number of top recruits on the Forty Acres for Texas’ annual spring game. Although he was disappointed it was called off after one half, Zabie still enjoyed the trip. “It was fun,” Zabie said. “I had a good time. I went with some teammates, so it was great. But they got rained out in the second half, so that was kind of a blow. We ended up just chilling in the lounge.” The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder saw good things out of the offense. One player, who he may one day be protecting, caught his attention. “Shane (Buechele) did a good job,” Zabie said. “I think he’s really good for a young quarterback with lots of potential when he gets the offense down. The offense did pretty good seeing how the defense has a lot of talent and the offense is raw with a new system.”

Zabie was able to meet with all of the coaches, but the one he spoke with the most was offensive line coach Matt Mattox. It was during that conversation, Mattox told Zabie he would be attending a spring practice at Austin Westlake. Zabie is “excited” to have him take a look at what he can do and hopes an offer comes his way. “I would like to think that, but I don’t really know,” Zabie said. “I’m not a coach, but they’ve been sending me a lot of love. That’s their deal. I don’t really know. I just got ranked by 247Sports. I hung with some of the best at The Opening camp. I got moved up highly in the rankings, so I’m just going to continue my thing. I have a lot of programs coming to see me that I’m excited about. It’s really just the start of my recruitment.”

Zabie, who has only been playing football for one year, said he likes that Texas is close to home and that he can continue his playing career with teammate Sam Ehlinger, who committed last summer. However, until the Longhorns offer, they will be behind the likes of Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. A four-star prospect, Zabie is ranked as the No. 22 offensive tackle in the country and No. 10 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Thoughts on Xavier Newman: Texas landed DeSoto (TX) OL Xavier Newman last night and I caught up with our own JY, a former college OL to see what he thinks about Newman’s game.

JY said, “He’s a really good player. He looks 6’3 but he’s got plenty of length so he may be able to eventually play tackle for the Horns though I don’t anticipate that to be the case.” Anytime you have guys who are versatile on the OL, that’s always a plus. Newman plays center, guard, and tackle at DeSoto. JY also noted, “He’s really effortless in his pass sets and he anchors very very well. Very impressive how he’s able to lock on to the defenders and finish them off. Really underrated player and he’s extremely athletic and powerful. Strong enough to kick inside and play as a guard as a young guy and slide out to tackle later on if needed.” Kinda reminds me of a young Kent Perkins, as he’s very versatile. JY ended it by saying, “He’s a rare combination of both mauler and dancing bear, If he works hard, adds weight, and stays healthy he’ll be an All-Big 12 type performer. Really nice player, and one that Texas fans should be excited about”.

Newman is a guy who will continue to develop and add weight during his senior season but this was a very solid get for Texas and OL coach Matt Mattox over Texas A&M and others. – (Andrew/JY)

Coaches on the Road: Spring evaluation period started this past week and so many of you may be wondering what players the Texas staff are visiting. However, we are told that the Texas coaches will not be heading out on the road until next week. – (Andrew)

How to Finish This Offensive Line Class: Something JY and Andrew touched on above is have versatility in your offensive linemen. People are typically one thing or another. But the more guys you can have that can sit down as a guard/center or widen guys as a tackle, the better. JY already noted that while Newman is expected to play inside he has a versatile skill set and like last years’ Texas OL signees, he’s a long athlete. This is how I’d consider finishing out the class…

Newman is in and he gives you a versatile guy who I suspect, based on his size, ends up as a Guard/Center

Walker Little…if Texas is able to land Little then they get a tackle that can play either side

Stephan Zabie…I’d finish the class going after Zabie. Zabie has strong ties to Texas. As a player he’s raw but you’re looking at an athletic guy who is essentially a replacement for missing out on Grayson Reed who was himself a hybrid Guard/Tackle.

With those three guys you’d be able to play every position on the offensive line splitting right to left. That’s what an OL class should look like to me. – (Super K)

Here are Thursday's notes on Texas targets.

— Bishop Dunne defensive tackle Damion Daniels earned new offers from California and Texas Tech today. Daniels will make an unofficial visit to UTSA this weekend. He has yet to see Texas this offseason.

— California, Kansas, TCU and Texas Tech all stopped by Bishop Dunne to see both Daniels and four-star cornerback Chevin Calloway, who made a visit to Texas over the weekend. Calloway’s interest in Texas is rising.

— IMG Academy (Fla.) outside linebacker Dylan Moses made an unofficial visit to Florida today. Texas is still in the lead for Moses, who will make a return trip to Austin in the summer.

— University Lab (La.) offensive tackle Adrian Ealy notched new offers from Oklahoma and Michigan today. LSU is the heavy favorite for Ealy, but Texas is hanging around in his recruitment.

— Nebraska became the latest school to offer Southern University Lab (La.) outside linebacker Christopher Allen. The four-star prospect currently has a Top 3 of Alabama, LSU and Texas.

— Oklahoma stopped by La Grange to check in on four-star running back J.K. Dobbins. The Ohio State commit is still hearing other schools out. Expect Texas to see him soon.

Big Weeks Ahead.......Here We Go......#LETSRIDE

"The next few weeks are going to be big for Texas. The work put in now will impact/influence what happens on NSD in February. Today should be all about putting the finishing touches on each coaches respective schedule starting on Sunday.....You will see the staff hit the road hard over the next few weeks. You will also see them during the evaluation period hit Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and obviously Texas above all else... you will see only a few with offers not get visits from the staff ---other than that expect every kid with an offer to get a visit from a Texas coach....Those are not the kids I am most interested in hearing about but the ones they go watch without offers as of today......"

Per TFB:
Spring Evaluation: The Texas staff will hit the road to kick of their spring visits next week. Next week we will be keeping an eye on who the staff is visiting.

A note worthy visit that is scheduled for next week is to Bishop Dunne High School. Dunne is the home of 2017 CB, Chevin Calloway and 2017 DT Damion Daniels. We are told Texas is expected to stop by next Wednesday. Calloway visited Texas for the spring game and it sounds like things went really well. The staff scheduling one of their first stops to see Calloway would indicate that they too feel like things went well.

The Texas staff would obviously love to bring in both Calloway and Kobe Boyce to restock the cornerback talent.

Tyrell Shavers & Camron Buckley: I recently spoke to a couple sources regarding 2017 WRs Camron Buckley (Cedar Hill, TX) and Tyrell Shavers (Lewisville, TX). As most of you know, Buckley was offered by Texas prior to the hire of the new offensive staff. Shavers offer is much more recent.

In speaking to sources on this I’m told that Buckley would like to make his commitment sometime in the early part of May. And I’m told that he’s strongly leaning towards Texas. However, what is uncertain is whether the new staff is going to honor the old staffs’ offer. I’m told that the new staff really favors bigger outside wide receivers. Enter Tyrell Shavers.

Shavers blew up recently after posting some amazing testing numbers at the Nike Regional Opening in Dallas. I’m told that Shavers fits more of the type of big fast outside wide receiver that the new offensive staff is looking for. In other words, Shavers is a take for the staff (though I’m sure they will do a further evaluation on him during this spring period). The interesting news is that, in talking to a source close to Shavers I’m told that he is very heavily leaning towards Texas. Source said that if Shavers was forced to decide today it would likely be Texas. – (Super K)

Per Scout:
Mammoth lineman Chuck Filiaga is one of the biggest offensive tackles in the country and weighed in at a solid 6-foot-6, 335 pounds at The Opening Regional Camp in L.A back in February.

For as big as he is, Filiaga is very well built and has tremendous upside. He's a naturally strong kid who moves around well and plays hard. He's still refining himself as a player in terms of his technique and becoming more comfortable on the offensive side of the ball but there's a reason just about every top program in the country has offered him a scholarship.

Filiaga played his last two seasons at Vista Murrieta (Calif.) and is currently still working out with the team and will finish off the spring semester before transferring to Aledo (Texas) for his senior year.

On the recruiting front Filiaga, spent his Spring Break a month ago checking out, in order, the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns, Baylor Bears, Tennessee Volunteers, Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide. The big lineman gave his thoughts on each program.

...........................

Longhorns- "I loved the UT campus and had a great time with Coach Strong. As soon as I walked in the door, the whole staff greeted me and were cracking jokes and made me feel comfortable. Coach Strong is a great guy and I loved what he had to say. He talked about the discipline he wants and expect in the program and how they're building something great there."
...........................

He recently moved from CA to Aledo, so we should have a shot here if we push hard.
