Recruiting Thread 2017

I have seen a few people saying similar things. I don't think it's exactly fair. Rewind to February and what was really known about Briles? Sure, there had been several incidents that were public at that time, but it is easy to see those as isolated occurrences. Return to the present, and now we know that there was a systemic cover up and institutional mishandling of rape allegations among other disciplinary issues.

When these players signed LOIs, there may have been a lot of smoke but no fire quite yet (heck, even the BOR didn't have enough evidence to make a move to fire Briles et al). Now the fire is raging. Baylor keeps adding fuel by preventing these players from transferring.

I disagree. Evidence was coming out before last season even started. The entire Ukwuachu botched Baylor investigation was public at that time. And the only people that didn't think the football program had a hand in that were in Waco. They obviously didn't know it was going to cost Briles his job, but they knew there was a dark side, and if they didn't, it was because they chose to put their heads in the sand. Plenty was out there imo.

That is basically my point. There were a few incidents that were public, that I'm sure staff could explain away if asked. Other than that, some rumors without any clear details and again I'm sure the staff was ready to explain these things away.

Of course, there is going to be some blissful ignorance. If you like someone or something, you don't want to believe any of the bad rumors. A player and family that like Baylor will choose not to believe the rumors, while rival college fans will of course be more willing to take rumors as truth.

BTW, it'll be interesting when we do finally get details. At this point we have upgraded from rumors to a general law firm produced brief without names or details. Baylor will be back in the headlines if a detailed report comes out. They are really dragging this out.

If they didn't know they covered their ears and closed their eyes. I am not saying they are bad people, they are human and ignorance is bliss. As far as them getting out of the NLI, I have already said that I side with the players on those circumstances. As far is this not being the Baylor they signed up for, I call BS. OTL dropped their first report on Baylor before NSD.

Baylor is in a bit of a slump to say the least.

I wonder how often that happens but is never an issue because kids generally don't want out of the NLIs? I don't really know the process on how you forget to send one NLI. Maybe they forgot to send them on the entire class.

Maybe they forgot to send them on the entire class.

Well, we know that they sent in Donovan Duvernay's so it definitely wasn't the entire class. I'm guessing that Devin's just slipped through the cracks somehow.

The scuttlebutt on the other sites is that we are willing to take both bros now. Probably with the new OC and not really having a lot of talented receivers (a lot of bodies though) they've come to the conclusion that they can't pass up this opportunity again. He could play immediately in Gilbert's offense.

With Miller already in the fold (for now) and interest from Shavers, Netherly, etc., should Duvernay be a priority?

Yes. Those guys are 2017. Duvernay can help now. A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. Opportunities to land impact players at this point don't come around ever. Duvernay and Hudson are too good to not try.

Not to mention we have a lot of dead weight on the roster at WR, so our depth chart isn't exactly full of playmakers.

24/7 reporting Texas is the "overwhelming favorite" to land OL Patrick Hudson assuming he's released from his LOI.

Per OrangeBloods, UT is "the top choice by a wide margin" for RB Kameron Martin if he's released from his LOI. The coaches' level of interest in Martin is still unknown.

Scout reporting former Baylor commitment, WR Hezekiah Jones of Stafford, plans to visit UT this summer.

Good luck to my boy @sehlinger3 at the Elite 11 in L.A... Ball out bro

War room:

The big story this week that has held everyone's interest isn't necessarily what's going on around the Forty Acres, it's more about the ongoing fallout from the Baylor issues.

Of course, that fallout could very well spill over and have a very direct impact on Texas, should some of the Baylor 2016 signees (or not signee as is the case with Devin Duvernay) decide to become Longhorns.

Here's some of the more interesting notes I heard this week ...

A total of seven players are looking to get out of their Baylor letters of intent. A good number of them have indicated behind the scenes that they have a strong interest in Texas. As for the Longhorns' stance in this, it's a fairly slow process. Texas cannot have any contact with the players until they have been officially released from their letters of intent, either by Baylor or by the NLI Policy and Review Committee. If/when either of those things happen, Texas should be a major player for several of the top Baylor recruits, but nothing can happen right now.

Except in the case of Devin Duvernay. The family of the standout WR from Sachse went to the NLI website to file an online appeal, and couldn't find any record of Devin's information. Donovan, his twin brother, was in there. Devin was not. As it turns out, Baylor somehow messed up and didn't file Devin's Letter of Intent paperwork, meaning he's currently on the open market.

--- From what I'm hearing through the grapevine, Texas could find room for two or three additional players, with four players being a possibility if the numbers were able to work out.

--- I spoke with a source close to Patrick Hudson again on Wednesday night. Not much has changed, but it's still good news for Texas.

"Texas is still where he's leaning," the person said.

Hudson has not talked with the UT staff due to the NCAA rules of contact, but this one looks like it will fall UT's way if he is given his release.

The person I spoke with said Hudson and his family have had zero contact with anyone at Baylor since Art Briles was fired. Those in the Bears' athletics offices aren't exactly going out of their way to do the players any favors.

--- Expect Texas to recruit Devin Duvernay aggressively now that he is fair game.

In talking to someone with knowledge of Devin and Donovan's situation, it sounds like the two will almost certainly go to the same school, as was their plan during the recruiting process. The idea of Texas possibly getting Devin without taking Donovan isn't going to happen.

That begs the obvious question ... would Texas target Donovon if he gets released?

Call it an educated guess, but I believe the Longhorns would in fact pursue both brothers if the numbers are there.

Of note, TCU did offer both Devin and Donovan during the recruiting process. Texas did not, but if the numbers work out, as expected, that would likely change this time around.

Devin could theoretically make a decision on his college destination tonight if he wanted to, but he is expected to wait until his brother hears word on his release before diving back into the recruiting process.

The Duvernays (and most of the others looking to be released) will likely stay close to home. Texas and TCU will likely battle it out for Devin and Donovon if Donovan is released. This one's too close to call with any real confidence.

--- RB Kameron Martin is another name worth watching. In talking to someone with knowledge of Martin's situation, he'd love nothing more than to enroll at Texas if he is freed from his LOI. Again, schools cannot have any contact with Martin until he receives his release, but my guess is that the Longhorns would have an interest in the Port Arthur Memorial speedster.

Martin could very well look at other schools in addition to Texas, but from what I'm hearing, the Longhorns are his top choice by a wide margin.

--- Again, it all comes down to numbers and whether or not the players get released, but another name worth following is that of offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez. I would very much expect the Longhorns to be in the picture for the Copperas Cove product, should his request for his release be granted.

--- So how would the numbers work if numerous players eventually wanted to flip to Texas? Hudson's a no-brainer but from what I've gathered, it could basically come down to which guys are released first and were ready to make the move. Basically, things are very much up in the air.

--- Most of the Baylor signees communicate regularly and are on a group text message chain. A quote from one of the signees ...

"A lot of us could wind up at Texas. I think Texas wants a lot of us (Martin, Hudson, Devin Duvernay, Donovan Duvernay, Urquidez, Parrish Cobb)."

If there was a big winner this week in Texas athletics, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone more deserving of a gold star than athletic director Mike Perrin.

Known as the ultimate people person and the perfect person to clean up former AD Steve Patterson's people person problem, Perrin did more than shake hands, slap backs and tell stories this week... he was a true athletic director in every sense of the position.

First, he handled the Augie Garrido situation as cleanly as the situation would allow for, eliminating any concerns that that the final days of the Garrido era would be bloody. Instead, he handled his business in a way that would have been quite handy 30 months ago.

"We didn't know it at the time, but he's the guy that we should have sent in to deal with Mack," one source said this week. "He has a way of defusing combustible situations and he proved that this week. There are a lot of ways to lead and his way might not be like DeLoss' (Dodds) or Steve Patterson, but his way is effective. We needed him to get this done and he never backed off from a difficult task."

Days later, Perrin stood in front of assorted media at the Big 12 president/athletic directors meetings in Dallas and strongly delivered UT's positions on a number of matters, revealing that the Longhorn Network and expansion are not matters that the school will budge on easily.

For the first time in his tenure as athletic director, Perrin truly looked like a complete athletic director and not just a guy playing the role until a better option can be vetted and hired.

"He had a good week, didn't he?" one source told me on Thursday night. "We have a lot of confidence in Mike and now the public can really see why. We couldn't have asked for him to perform his duties any better."

Nacogdoches DB Josh Thompson is "probably" coming to UT's mini-camp on Sunday. If he makes it in, he'll be a guy to watch for a possible offer.

Key quote:"After the ETSN combine, I got defensive MVP. Coach (Jeff) Traylor texted me great job, told me to keep Texas on my mind and I'd been hitting their radar lately," Thompson said. "Also coach Jennings came by for spring practice and said later that something good might be coming for me.

"He (Jennings) wants me to come camp, but said he's seen everything. He just wanted to see me at the camp and then go from there."

If Texas offers:Thompson said the Longhorns would "definitely be at the top" but then clarified that Texas would be bunched up with several other schools.

The 6-0, 183-pounder doesn't have a list of favorites yet, but said he'll put out a top 7 or top 10 this weekend, after he gets a chance to talk to his coach.

The Brandon Jones influence:Incoming UT freshman Brandon Jones has put in some good words on the Longhorns' behalf.

"He just told me they're a DB school. If I'm looking to succeed at my position, it would be a great school. The coaches at Texas want kids to get an education first, and that's what I want to do," Thompson said.

Possible early decision:Thomspon said he may make a commitment before his senior season begins. If not, he'll try to make it shortly after it ends. (Suchomel)

When I last talked to Missouri City Elkins LB Kenneth Murray, the contact with the UT staff was somewhat limited. The next day, he picked up a UT offer. I followed up with him this week to get the details.

"My coach texted me, told me to give coach Haley a call. I got on the phone with coach Haley, coach Strong was there, coach Bedford, coach BJ. I talked to coach strong first, after that Bedford, coach BJ, then coach Haley. It was like a 20 minute call," Murray said.

Murray released a top 10 on Wednesday and the Longhorns made the cut. He plans to look into those schools over the next few months and then try to come to an early decision.

"I'm going to start looking into the schools in my 10, dig deep into those," Murray said. "I'll possibly commit before the season, if not before the season I'll have a top five before the season."

Murray plans to hit UT's satellite camp in Houston later this month. (Suchomel)

Texas defensive end commitment LaGaryonn Carson is hoping to make it to UT's mini-camp on June 12. If he's able to come, he said he'll probably just hang out and spend some time with the coaches and other prospects in attendance.

With the spring semester coming to a close, recruiting has kind of slowed down for Carson. Other schools have backed off ... for now.

"Everybody kind of knows where I stand," Carson said.

The 6-5, 255-pound Carson stays in close contact with the UT coaches, particularly area recruiter Jeff Traylor. He said Traylor's presence is a big reason why he committed to Texas.

"I talk to him every day. I'm just riding with him regardless," Carson said. "It's just everything about him, him as a person. He's been knowing me ever since I played against him when he was at Gilmer. And I know a lot about him." (Suchomel)

Texas will host its first summer camp this Sunday. I've reached out to a number of the Longhorns' top 2017 prospects but honestly, haven't had a ton of responses. A few notable players who told us they'll be in attendance ...Montrell Estell- DB - Hooks Damion Miller- WR - John Tyler (is a maybe, depends on parents) Josh Thompson- DB - Nacogdoches (probable) Randall Royall- LB - Houston Stratford Kary Vincent- DB - Port Arthur Memorial (hitting one of the two mini-camps) Anthony Cook- DB - Houston Lamar (2018) Kobe Boyce- DB - Lake Dallas (possibly but more likely on June 12)

Hudson is the prize. Duverney is also special and the only other one that would get PT instantly, but he takes up 2 spots.

If you only have 3 spots and assuming they want in, I would go Hudson and the Duverney bros. Martin and JP are solid players, but players like that can be gotten in any class. Really anything after Hudson is gravy.

The 2016 recruiting class has got to be our wildest ever.

IT (Justin Wells):

While we wait on Baylor to do the right thing and release the kids from their LOI, here's some Texas recruiting tidbits, and team notes as the summer workouts begin.

1. Sam Ehlinger is California Dreamin'

While UT's QB pledge from 2017, Ehlinger, is in Los Angeles at the Elite 11 semifinals this weekend, I got a chance to catch up with the 4-star from Westlake. Nothing new from the soft spoken signal-caller, but I asked what are some things he'd like to work on and improve during his Elite 11 trials.

"Anything and everything, I'm going into this open minded to any coaching I can possibly get," said Ehlinger. "You can always get better."

Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to a 25-year old. His maturity and wisdom is beyond his years. When you build a QB in the Quarterback Factory, he's the mold. He'll be back in Austin for the Texas camp on June 12th, then head to Oregon for the Opening the first week in July. Eric and I will get our Sammy fix this summer.

He also dropped this tweet last week to a fellow media member out of Waco. He's my hero.

2. Josh and Jordan Moore return to Austin

The Yoakum junior duo will be at Texas camp tomorrow, and as I've stated in previous Scoops, don't be surprised if Jordan (DB) and Joshua Moore (WR) are offered tomorrow.

"I like their defensive scheme at Texas," said Jordan, who dropped his Top 10 this week with UT squarely in the mix. "I love how Strong and Bedford does things. I could see myself at DBU."

What are the things that stand out about Texas, Josh?

"The school, it's just my childhood favorite, and plus my mom graduated from there."

Is it safe to say Texas is y'all's leader right now?

"Yes sir," said Josh.

Good answers, young men. Now show up tomorrow ready to work.

3. Tristan Allen

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound LB from Atlanta, TX is starting to get noticed. It's about time. The 2017 athlete runs a 4.6 and has the explosiveness you look for at the LB spot. He picked up his first offer this week, UTEP, and there's more to come. Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas State are on him as well. And UT, who sees him as a Fox.

"I can easily play both (ILB and OLB) because I have the size, strength, speed, length, and agility to play both," said Allen, who doesn't lack confidence. Must be a bEASTtexas thing.

"Coach Traylor came and talked to me recently," said Allen. "They're definitely interested."

Allen would like to camp at Texas this month, and might visit A&M and Baylor at some point.

4. A few team notes heading into the summer

I got some tidbits on a handful of Horns as the summer approaches and workouts begin from a source close to the program.

A) The Secondary: Davante Davis might be the team's best DB. My source says he's a future 1st rounder. Holton Hill is being pushed by Kris Boyd, so don't be surprised to see those two rotate a lot. PJ Locke is the hardest worker, and is pushing for playing time every snap. This season is large for DeShon Elliott as he really needs to work harder and secure his spot. They expect Brandon Jones to come in and play because he will not redshirt. The longer it takes Elliott to learn the schemes, the better chance Jones plays early and often.

B) The O-line: They need more bodies. Strong builds from the inside-out. His OL and DL are the most important spots in his mind. Texas feels like they need more depth. They feel good about their first five - Williams, Vahe, Perkins, Shack, and Hodges. But they want more meat from the 2nd and 3rd teams. That's one reason if two prospects from Waco happen to get released from their LOI, Texas would be a prime landing spot.

C) The QB: Nothing noteworthy here other than UT's probable starter, Shane Buechele, is already working behind the scenes on Garland Sachse free agent WR Devin Duvernay. Buechele realizes how valuable Devin could be in the slot, a spot that UT sorely needs speed at. Just when I think he's getting the leadership aspect of being the man on the 40 Acres down, he tops it. When he's not hitting jet skis in stride with go routes on Lake Sam Rayburn, he's helping build a monster in Austin.

ONE TO WATCH: Carson Collins, QB - Lucas Lovejoy (2019)

While Waco Midway's Tanner Mordecai, Denton Ryan's Spencer Sanders, and OK's Casey Thompson are UT's early targets for QB in 2018, Collins is a sophomore on the radar. The 6-foot-0, 180-pound southpaw will be in Austin tomorrow for UT's first mini camp. Texas Tech, UTEP, TCU, and SMU are on the junior-to-be early.

If not for one major mitigating factor BBR brought up yesterday regarding a possible gang rape coverup I don't think Baylor would release Hudson...and others. With this little tidbit in the woodpile Baylor better cut their loss's and start building over.

They won't get the death penalty but its not going to be far from it...

I think JP is a take as well. Football starts on the lines. Brought in 7 DL to fix those woes. Hudson and JP would make for 6 OL in the 16 class. OL needs some depth.

Would take both Duvernays and Martin as well. Speed kills.

Mack's whole 2014 WR class looks to have been recruited over at this point. Heck, maybe every Mack WR not named Amanti Foreman has been recruited over.

If Texas manages to get Devin D. in I could see 4 WRs transferring out after summer camp.

Hey Scholzie, if memory serves . . . UT was recruiting Tren'Davian Dickson back n the day. Now all the talk is about Duvernay. What's going on there? Why no chatter about Dickson?

Also, dad passed away a few years back. Hogan Park Golf Course built a bench on the 1st hole with his name on it. Pretty cool!

Dickson was an early enrollee for the Spring semester. He would be subjected transfer rules including two years lost for in conference transfers unless the NCAA grants all players a release. The others haven't enrolled so only the LOI rules apply at this point.

If there is room I agree. Take all you can because a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. My post was based on only 3 spots being available. I would go Hudson and the 2 Duverneys before Hudson, JP, and Martin.

Inside Texas reporting DE Ondario Robinson of Hutto will be on campus today. Has a good offer list of offer list including Texas, Georgia, Missouri, ou, aggy, and rape aggy.

http://247sports.com/Player/Ondario-Robinson-84150

Hope we land this guy at rush end. He, Lagaryonn Carson and Taquon Graham would make a stellar DE class.
