Recruiting Thread 2017

QB Sam Ehlinger has been chosen for the Elite 11 Finals and will head to Oregon for Nike's The Opening. Named MVP too.

Austin Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger received his golden ticket to Oregon on Monday morning. The Texas commit earned an invitation to Elite 11 after a strong performance at the finals in Los Angeles over the weekend. Ehlinger was named the MVP and earned the "most coachable" award. Ehlinger will follow in the footsteps of 2015 Texas signee Shane Buechele, who won the accuracy award at last year’s competition.

The Elite 11 will take place July 6-10 at Nike Headquarters. At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Ehlinger is ranked as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the country and No. 22 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

He was the last name called on the reveal show just now.

If there is room I agree. Take all you can because a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush. My post was based on only 3 spots being available. I would go Hudson and the 2 Duverneys before Hudson, JP, and Martin.

I didn't do a good job of saying I think there is more room than what we see looking at the roster table as I think some Mack guys move on, if they want play, as they have been recruited over.

We will start this week with an update on the 2016 Baylor signees still trying to get out of their NLI’s.

Devin Duvernay – The speedster was scheduled to be in Austin today, but he pushed his visits back to next week. It appears that Duvernay is zeroing in on Texas, TCU, and Oklahoma. All three schools have certain things in their favor to win over the Sachse star. Texas was a favorite of Duvernay’s last year, and they now run an offense that fits his skills in the best way. TCU is close to home, and they offered his brother Donovan during the recruiting cycle. Oklahoma has Duvernay’s cousin Kyler Murray, along with a fast paced attack where his speed would excel. I believe this recruitment will still come down to a packaged deal between Devin and Donovan. It was reiterated to me this weekend that Duvernay loves Texas, and if the Longhorns were to go all in for both brothers they would have a great chance to land them. We will see what shakes out on his visits.

Patrick Hudson - Much like during the season, the big man is pretty quiet when it comes to matters of his recruitment. The sentiment behind the scenes continues to be that Texas would be an overwhelming favorite should he choose to go elsewhere and receive his release.

Parrish Cobb – Cobb’s father has been outspoken about obtaining his son’s release, and rightly so since it was promised to him on the condition of a meeting with new Baylor coach Jim Grobe. The word last week was that Cobb would be headed to Oklahoma once he was released, but I was told yesterday that Texas is back in play, and Cobb is starting to warm to the idea. The reason I’m told, is that some of the incoming freshmen are doing their best sales pitch to get Cobb to Austin. I was told Brandon Jones is leading the charge to land Cobb, along with his cousin Eric Cuffee. Combine that with Cobb’s reported love for Clay Jennings, and Texas might be able to secure themselves the best pure cover corner from last year’s class.

JP Urquidez – Urquidez and his family have been equally as vocal about their desire to obtain a release from Baylor. The indications are still mixed on the back end, but I believe Texas would have some interest if he’s out there.

Texas held their first mini-camp of the summer over the weekend, and we were able to speak to several attendees. One of the big headlines on the day was the offers extended to Yoakum twins Joshua and Jordan Moore. The 2018 brothers have been picking up big offers around the nation since the spring and it’s easy to see why. We spoke with both brothers last night to get the scoop on their day in Austin.

HornSports: Tell me about the offer, how did it feel?

Jordan: “It was a surreal feeling. I didn’t expect it, but at the same time I dominated in one on one’s so I kind of felt like I was going to get some kind of big news”.
Joshua: “The offer meant a lot to me! It was a big one. My mother actually graduated from Texas, so that will definitely play a factor in the process”.

HornSports: Is she already recruiting you to Austin?

Joshua: “A little bit. I think she was more excited than me and Jordan. She just wants what’s best for us, so whatever school we decide to commit to we know our parents will be behind us 110%”.

Jordan: “She’s been yelling ‘hook em’ all through the house today, but at the same time she tells us to do what’s best for us”.

HornSports: Most twins want to play together at the next level. Is that something you guys have agreed on?

Joshua: “Not really. As of right now, we’re just letting things happen. As it gets closer to decision time we will start to narrow things down”.

HornSports: Joshua, I heard you measured in at 6’3. Is that true?

Joshua : “Yes sir”

HornSports: I think I had you at 6’1 at the Opening in Houston.

Joshua: “Yes sir I was 6’1 a couple of months ago”.

HornSports: How did the offer go down?

Joshua: “Well actually he (Coach Strong) offered us out on the field right after camp. I went up to shake his hand and he gave us the news”

Jordan: “Yes, he offered us both at the same time”.
HornSports: Is it safe to say Texas will be one of your top options?

Joshua: “Absolutely”.

Jordan: “I can honestly say Texas is my number one”.

HornSports: Jordan, you guys have a ton of offers already. Is there one out there you don’t have but you’d love to get.

Jordan: “TCU. I’ve always wanted that one. My best friend, who is like an older brother to me plays receiver there”.

HornSports: Which one?

Jordan: “Tre’vontae Hights”.

HornSports: Have you guys thought about when you might make a decision?

Jordan: “No sir we actually haven’t”.

Both of the brothers are extremely friendly and great to talk with, so we should have a lot of great material from them over the course of their recruitment. It’s still early, but Texas should be considered the early favorite at this point.

One of the prospects that generated the most buzz at the Texas mini-camp this past weekend was Trinity Valley Community College DB Curtis Jones. Jones is a bit of a late bloomer, and a product of South Grand Prairie in the class of 2015 where he teamed with Texas safety Jason Hall. Jones has developed since he left high school, and the 6’1, 180 lbs. junior was a freshman qualifier so he would be eligible to enroll in whatever school he chooses in the fall. Jones told us that the Texas staff had no idea who he was, but that changed when he showed up on Sunday. “Coach Bedford wants me to come to the next camp. He said he loved my physical play and 4.43 speed. He told me he was coming to watch me play at Trinity Valley”. Jones told us he does plan to come back to Austin next week to compete again at the Texas mini-camp. Jones will attend the Abilene Christian camp this week as well in an effort to get as many eyes on him as possible. Now that Jones is on the Texas radar, a strong performance next week could make him a serious contender for an offer.

+++++

The name Metcalf is near royalty in Austin. When 2018 Seattle (WA) Garfield High School receiver Mekhi Metcalf attended camp this past weekend, he got a taste of it. The son of former Longhorn Eric Metcalf had a great time in Austin, and he told us all about it. “It was great. As soon as we started I got to see the many trophies won by Longhorn legends, including the two Heisman trophies won by Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. I also got to see all of the different facilities and spaces used by the football program. I was just amazed”. Metcalf measured in at 6’2, 168 lbs., and he ran a 4.83 40 on what he told us was a bum hip. Metcalf also got to interact with the Texas coaches, and he really enjoyed their feedback. “Coach Charlie Williams told me to keep up the good work so he can get a trip to Seattle to see me play”. It came as no surprise when Metcalf told us that he grew up a huge fan of Texas. If the Longhorns were to recruit him, he told us that they would most definitely be at the top of his list. Currently Metcalf is hearing from Washington State, Oregon State, Northern Colorado, Wyoming, and Hawaii. As he enters his junior season in high school, look for more schools to notice his ability and for his profile to rise.

We caught up briefly with Hutto defensive end Ondario Robinson who was recently offered by Texas. Robinson has been pretty quiet since the offer, but he did tell us about what it meant to him. “It was good to get because Texas has a rich history in athletics. It’s a great school”. Robinson has been in contact with Texas since the offer, and he actually visited today. We will try to catch up with him again to get a recap on how it went. Robinson is being recruited by Vance Bedford, and at this point Texas faces its biggest competition from Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Inside Access for June 7th, 2016- Higdon

I was out of pocket most of the weekend with baseball. So, I wanted to have Inside Access up a day early for you all. Ondario Robinson spent a LOT of time with Charlie Strong today by the way.

What influence has negative recruiting had since Charlie Strong has been here? Do coaches truly believe Texas will not be any good or are they afraid of how good Texas could be in the next few years?

Teams that play Texas are doing everything in their power to persuade kids not to attend Texas. They are very concerned about how good Texas is going to be over the next couple of years. Texas is a sleeping giant about to wake, so people are in panic mode. They will say and do anything to keep top tier kids from committing and attending Texas, but it’s too late. Recruits/families see what Charlie Strong is about to do in Austin, and there is nothing they can do to stop it in my mind.

With Summer workouts starting, any Updates on height and weight for the newcomers? Any updates on Buechele putting 10lbs of muscle on? :)

Added weight for all the kids in the class of 2016 at the end.

Who has the ultimate say, both realistically as well as legally, in the hiring of:

1) head coach --- AD I believe
2) asst. Coaches? – Head Coach

For example, does the AD get to choose, make the final decision on who "the guy" is, subject to the salary being approved by (whom, the BOR?)? And if the named "guy" agrees to a salary below the "need to be approved level," then the AD can and should make this selection?

Yes, I believe that is accurate

2) what about Asst Coaches? Does the HC get to choose "their guy", again subject to salary approvals, or does UTS AD have: 1) veto power, 2) can tell the HC who will be his Asst Coaches (aka Steve Patterson)?

Head coach makes those hires, but in some cases, the OC or DC is allowed to bring in the guys he wants. This is not always the case, though. Just depends on the situation. The OC or DC will bring candidates to the HC, and he will sign off on them or he won't. The HC will bring OC/DC candidates to the AD and either the AD will sign off on them or he won’t. Some people believe they are aware of the power struggle within the university, but they couldn’t be further from the truth about what takes place and what took place during the last hire of Texas football coaches.

Real current example: UT HC for men's baseball – AD will come up with a list of candidates, but I believe he isn’t the final say on the subject. He will need to get the names/salaries approved from above. Some schools will seek the council of outside companies for the coaching search which I find odd, but it does happen often.

What's your gut feeling on Patrick Hudson landing at Texas at this time?

Right now it’s a no-go in my book. Patrick Hudson has not been released at this time. When or if he does, then I will have something to talk about in more depth. Nothing for me to talk about regarding Hudson at this time as he has not been released.

How many hours do the players typically take during the summer??

Depends on the player, what year they are etc. It’s different from true freshmen and incoming seniors. I really can’t answer this question without talking to everyone on the team. Last year I believe some only had to take three hours of classes. This summer I think you will see the incoming kids take three and the rising sophomore kids take six or something like that. Again, just depends on the player.

Any hints on number of additional NRA folks this summer??

Things are going to happen moving forward. I certainly am not going to divulge any names of players that will not be on the team in the fall. That would just about be professional suicide on my part. I tell everyone each year to expect NRA or Natural Recruiting Attrition to make way for the incoming players, the players of tomorrow. It happens at every single program across the country, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. It’s the way of college football today.

Will we offer Donovon Duvernay a schollie?

Texas has the room. This deal could go either way. We will see what Devin has to say when he visit this weekend.

With you knowing all that you know in this recruiting world, what is the level of concern with Texas getting back to the point where they are getting the recruits that they want? The concern in the Big12 I'm sure is high, but what about on a national level? There seems to be more and more interest coming from the top talent on the board. I'm sure all the blue bloods know that Texas is a sleeping giant in the recruiting world.

Coaches go into every recruiting cycle with a certain level of concern. If you do not take this approach, you are foolish. Texas has had great success the last several seasons on the recruiting trail going head to head with Oklahoma and Texas A&M and many other schools. They have done so without winning many games. It shows the kind of recruiter/closer that Charlie is. People love him; they pull for him as well as gravitate to him. When they win this year, they will be on cruise control on the recruiting trail. It will be different vs. the last two years and the way they have recruited.

And since you have been on the other side with Florida..how is it from an SEC stance on how things would be if Texas things got rolling. I ask this because I do believe Texas can be greater than Alabama at their highest and tOSU.

That is a bold statement. Alabama is where they are (Winning 4 of 7 National Titles) because they have stockpiled five-star talent at every single position. I can make the case that the 2nd stringers at Bama in most years would all be starters at other major programs, that’s disgusting and why they win. They simply have more than the other guy. After Texas inks this 2017 class, they will be the single most talented teams in the Big 12 by far in my mind.

If Texas beats Notre Dame and OU do you think we make the college football playoff basically could you see us running the table?

No. Texas is still thin in some very key spots and young. Youth will catch up to them at some point in the season in some game they are supposed to win but do not. 2017 they will win the Big 12 and be in the final four.

How long will Texas wait to hear back either way from elite recruits before moving on to secondary targets? I guess the example I'm thinking of is at LB with the big guys expected to take it close to NSD would they turn away a Murray or Levi Jones to wait for Hines, Browning, Moses, etc.?

A lot of these questions will be answered during the summer months when these guys get back on campus for a visit. These guys can make the call and pull the trigger now. Kenneth Murray is very underrated in the media but not for the Texas coaching staff. They will balance some of these situations over the next several months. Remember, once the season starts the focus is on football. Most kids are going to either pop before September, or they wait for All-Star games or NSD. Texas is in no rush right now.

Kendall Jones is going to Juco. If he makes the switch to OG will we make another run at him?

No, they will not. Texas dodged a bullet with this kid and are LUCKY things went down the way they went down. There was a time when I thought he was a great player. As I did more research on the kid, I found out he was nowhere near the player I thought he once was. He should not have been a five-star kid, and he will never make any significance regardless of where he ends up down the road.

Is the reason you left Fowler off your list of updated weights for the DL because his chances of getting into Texas are getting smaller?

No, that is not the reason. However, I believe Southall has a better chance of getting in before August, but we have the summer to see what happens.

Gut feeling with the Duvernay brothers once the other brother is released?

Texas is the first choice in my opinion. If it doesn’t work with Texas, it will be TCU I believe.

Any updates on Walker Little, AJ Davis, Tyrell Shavers, Taquon Graham, or Kary Vincent? Any additional info from Taylor after his visit... I know we heard initially both he and his mom loved it, just didn't know if you've talked to him since?

Shavers is talking about a top ten or something like that. It will be a while on him I believe. I need to see all these kids visit over the summer, in particular, Shavers and Graham again. I like the way things are going with Kary Vincent right now. Kary is going to speak with Charlie this weekend about setting up his next visit to Texas to hang with the coaches more. AJ Davis has never visited Texas, even though he is supposed to come during the summer. Walker Little is a high priority clearly, and we should see him visit soon. The Texas trip for Taylor and his mom was huge. I think this will be proven with a return trip for Tyler at some point near the end of the summer, possibly for UTL.

What can you tell us about how the Devin Duvernay visit went today? (If it even happened...I haven't heard anything)

He did not make his trip today. He will be in town this weekend. This will work much better for Texas as he will get to spend more time with the coaching staff vs. coming in on a Monday during a camp for little kids.

I was asked the other day for a lottery number to pass the time. Took me a while to figure some out but here goes.

5-10-6-1-43-25

% chance you believe Fowler will qualify?

I have no clue what kind of work ethic this kid has. I can’t say its overly impressive or he would not be in this situation to begin with. What I know is this, if he does what he's supposed to do he will be at Texas in the fall and if not oh well.

% chance you think when it's all said and done he wears a Longhorn uniform?

I think he sticks with Texas no matter what happens this summer, but the question is when? I honestly can't give you a percentage not knowing him well enough to know what kind of work ethic he has. I think the more likely scenario would be prep school, and he can enroll at Texas in January. I don’t think he's that worse off where he would need the JUCO route.

What's the backup plan for guys like Fowler and Southall who might not make it in? I know the juco route for them, but does Texas still try to get those guys on campus after two years?

If they went JUCO, the recruiting process starts all over again. Usually, when a kid goes the JUCO route, they get lost in the system so to speak. All you can hope for is IF they don’t make it in this summer (I think Southall will) they can worst case hopefully go prep school allowing them to enroll in January. JUCO will be bad. I will make the case Alabama will NEVER see Kendell Jones on campus if he is enrolled in a two-year juco school. The only kid I can think of that this road traveled worked out for is safety Reggie Nelson and Florida year’s ago.

Assuming we get off to a hot start next year and then beat OU again, do you think Charlie gets an extension? If he does, would our 2017 class just explode?

I believe Texas wins enough this year, and he will get his extension. Yes, it will help with recruiting as well.

Besides Swoopes (graduates) how many QB's transfer or switch positions after this season. You don't have to give names. However, I'm sure you have heard something at this point. Kids don't keep to themselves very well anymore.

Lol, you are correct but no reason for me to add fuel to the fire. Not in this situation. You will see some changes, no choice.

Texas hosted a handful of talented recruits at its first minicamp over the weekend. While we reported every big name that made it to the Forty Acres on Sunday, there was one mystery recruit that made an unofficial visit a few days prior. We have been asked not to unveil the name of this recruit, but we can tell you that he is one of UT’s top overall targets in the 2017 class. I’m told the recruit had an opportunity to have a sit down meeting with Charlie Strong and his position coach and had a great time overall. I’m also told Texas feels really good about where it stands with the recruit. (Holland)

Possible that the mystery recruit is J.K. Dobbins. Holland was hinting in that direction a little while back.

Good tight ends are hard to come by. And that makes keeping Bullard’s Major Tennison a top priority for Texas. The three-star prospect committed to the Longhorns last October and his coach, Shannon Wilson, believes Tennison can be a special player in Austin. “He’s versatile,” Wilson said. “He’s very talented and intelligent. For his size, he moves so well. He’s a mismatch problem for a lot of people. We’re excited about him.” When asked to compare Tennison to an NFL tight end, Wilson had this to say: “There are not a lot of guys that are his size that move like him,” Tennison said. “Rice had one (Vance McDonald) that was similar that moved on to the NFL. Jace Amaro from Texas Tech is another guy. You’re just able to do multiple things with him.”

At 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, Tennison caught 24 passes for 541 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior at Bullard and established himself as one of the top tight ends in the state. While Tennison is currently committed to UT, he is looking around at other schools and is strongly considering Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan and Georgia — all have put offers on the table. Still, Wilson believes Texas would be an ideal fit for Tennison, who would be coached by fellow East Texas native Jeff Traylor. “Coach Traylor and I are really tight,” Wilson said. “We have mutual respect. We’re really close. He’s a fantastic football coach. I think that’s a great match for Texas. He’s from East Texas, and he’s going to do things the right way.”

Tennison is ranked as the No. 16 tight end in the country and No. 56 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite. (Holland)

Patrick Hudson - Much like during the season, the big man is pretty quiet when it comes to matters of his recruitment. The sentiment behind the scenes continues to be that Texas would be an overwhelming favorite should he choose to go elsewhere and receive his release.
Hudson just started following Lagaryonn Carson.

Highlights of QB Sam Ehlinger from Elite 11 last weekend. Looks good.

Here are Tuesday's notes on Texas targets (Horns247).

— Port Arthur Memorial cornerback Kary Vincent plans to release his Top 10 schools on July 10. Vincent made an unofficial visit to Texas last month and is high on the Longhorns. It would be a shock if UT missed the cut.

— Five-star Houston Bellaire Episcopal defensive tackle Marvin Wilson tweeted out that big news would be coming this Saturday. I fully expect Wilson to release a top schools list, which Texas should be on.

— Memphis Harding Academy (TN) offensive lineman Will Lawrence will camp with Texas this weekend. The 2018 recruits holds more than 30 offers, including one from Texas.

— Four-star Plano East inside linebacker Anthony Hines will make an unofficial visit to Ohio State on June 11. Hines visited Texas in the spring and will likely be back for Under The Lights in July.

— Madison Prep (La.) defensive lineman Troy James notched a new offer from Middle Tennessee State today. As mentioned last week, James is a name to keep an eye on.

Watched the Ehlinger video, Kid definitely has the body and moves really well but there is something about his release that looks a little odd and I wonder if that had something to do with some of the inaccurate throws.

Maybe it's the angle of the video but it looks like a 3/4 delivery with a release point somewhere outside his shoulder. Go the the video and freeze it right at 27 seconds and 31 seconds. Those throws were off. Look at the position of his head compared to his arm. It could have been bad mechanics on those throws. If you freeze it right at 1:10 much better arm slot and release point. Head is off to the side but not is bad, throw is accurate with zip, timing off a little. The other throws couldn't really tell, maybe just a consistency issue

EJ Holland: Ondario Robinson recaps Texas visit

Hutto defensive end Ondario Robinson made an unexpected unofficial visit to Texas on Monday afternoon. Instead of attending UT’s first minicamp a day prior, Robinson decided to wait in order to get a more in-depth tour of the campus and have a sit-down conversation with the coaching staff. “It was great,” Robinson said. “Some of my favorite parts were sitting down with Coach (Charlie) Strong and Coach (Vance) Bedford, seeing some of the incoming freshmen that I played against last year workout and talking with some of the players.”

Robinson was a little irked with Texas earlier this spring when the Longhorns didn’t express much interest. But UT put an offer on the table last month and is now making the local product a top priority. Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford made that clear earlier this week when explained to Robinson why it took the Longhorns some time to get in the mix in his recruitment. “Coach Bedford mostly emphasized that it took long to offer because they evaluate you in every aspect of life,” Robinson said. “It’s on the field and off the field. He also talked about how I would fit into the defense with my playing style. Coach Strong emphasized the level his players are held at, the core values of the team and what the team is all about.”

A three-star prospect, Robinson is an intriguing player with plenty of upside. The 6-foot-3, 236-pounder looks like a ‘Fox’ end but can also grow into a strong-side defensive end at the next level. Robinson said his interest in Texas is ‘high’ and added that the Longhorns are definitely in his Top 5. Robinson is ranked as the No. 26 strong-side defensive end in the country and No. 87 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

EJ Holland: Wide Receivers Big Board

With the evaluation period coming to a close, recruiting is starting to really heat up, and that means it's time for us to break down where Texas stands with its top prospects at each position. Here is a closer look at the wide receiver situation in the 2017 class.

- Damion Miller, John Tyler — Miller has been committed to Texas since last June. And although he has wavered at times, it appears his verbal pledge is strengthening. Ole Miss, however, remains a real threat to the Longhorns.

- Montrell Estell, Hooks — Estell surprised some when he made a verbal commitment to Texas over Texas A&M last month. Estell is one of the top small-school player in the state and has plenty of potential. He could end up playing defensive back.

- Omar Manning, Lancaster — Originally thought to be a TCU lean, Manning is exploring all of his options at this time. Texas is in a good position heading into the summer, but it is imperative to for the Longhorns to get one of their top targets on campus for a visit. [Update: Manning will visit Texas this Sunday.]

- Tyrell Shavers, Lewisville — This guy is from another world. Shavers stands at 6-foot-6, 202 pounds and runs a 4.38 forty. Major programs are enamored with his size, speed and potential, including Texas. Like with Manning, the Longhorns are in a good position but need to get him on campus for a visit this summer.

- Mannie Netherly, Crosby — Netherly is back on the open market after backing out of his verbal pledge to Texas A&M last month. Netherly recently said Texas was 'at the top' of his list. LSU and Texas A&M are also high on his mind.

- Jalen Reagor, Waxahachie — An Oklahoma commit, Reagor flipped to the Sooner from Texas Tech earlier this offseason. Texas decided to get in the mix after Reagor gave the Sooners a verbal pledge. He will be tough for the Longhorns to flip.

- Devonta Smith, Amite (La.) — Texas extended an offer to Smith, a five-star prospect, in the spring, but he does not appear to have any interest in the Longhorns at this time. Alabama is considered the heavy favorite in his recruitment.

- Hezekiah Jones, Staff — Jones is evaluating all of his options after backing out of his pledge to Baylor follow the program's scandal and firing of Art Briles. Texas has reached out to Jones, but it is unclear how strong of a push the Longhorns will make.

- Camron Buckley, Cedar Hill — Texas offered Buckley after an impressive performance at Under The Lights last summer. But the new offensive staff still wants to see more of him. Expect Buckley to camp with the Longhorns this summer.

- Charleston Rambo, Cedar Hill — An Oklahoma commit, Rambo recently told Horns247 that he would be open to listening to Texas if the Longhorns put an offer on the table. He plans on attending UT's satellite camp later this summer.

- Trestan Ebner, Henderson — One of the fastest rising prospects in the state, Ebner has been on UT's radar for a while. Texas has yet to offer, but assistant coach Jeff Traylor is staying in constant contact with the East Texas native. [Note: Ebner committed to TCU late Wednesday night.]

- Carmoni Green, Miami Central (Fla.) — Green made an unofficial visit to Texas in the summer and said he enjoyed his time on campus. UT has yet to offer, but the staff did see him during the evaluation period.

- McLane Mannix, Midland — A West Texas sleeper, Mannix ran a sub-4.4 forty at UT's first summer minicamp. Air Force is his only FBS offer, but he's a prospect that could blow up in the near future.

EJ Holland: Tidbits from Quick Twitch/Illinois satellite camp

Here are notes on Texas targets from today's Illinois satellite camp with Quick Twitch.

— Four-star 2018 Houston Lamar cornerback Anthony Cook had an extremely impressive performance at today’s camp. He uses his hands well, is technically sound and is simply the state's best cornerback in 2018. He is high on Texas early on.

— Lancaster wide receiver Omar Manning did not work out, but he did tell me that he plans to visit Texas on Sunday. I talked to a number of sources close to Manning, but the answers were similar: Manning is somewhat of a mystery right now. Texas is in it along with Oklahoma and TCU. He also plans to visit Ohio State.

— Cedar Hill wide receiver Camron Buckley did not camp today but told me he would participate in Texas’ satellite camp on June 17. Right now, Ole Miss and Iowa are the frontrunners in his recruitment. Texas wants to see more of him.

— Dallas Woodrow Wilson cornerback Darrion Green will also camp with Texas in Dallas on June 17. Green holds a handful of offers and is on UT’s radar. Green called Texas his ‘dream school.’

— John Marshall (OK) cornerback Justin Broiles told me that he hasn’t heard from Texas since he committed to Oklahoma in early March. Broiles is completely solid to the Sooners.

— Some 2018 recruits to keep an eye on are Lancaster cornerback Jordon Austin, Rockwall linebacker Alston Orji, Prestonwood Christian cornerback Jeremiah Lewis and Sachse defensive end Zach Gilson. All four had solid performances.

Does anyone has an idea of who we will get for the'17 class by position.

Interesting note from Jeff Howe on Jake Raulerson and possible Baylor refugees:

"Sounds like it'll be SMU or North Carolina (for Raulerson) with a chance of Michigan getting back into the picture. I wanted to check back again to see if Texas was an option and it's not. That's important to note because the Longhorns appear to be trying to keep as many open spots as possible in case Baylor signees who are released (at some point) want to come and the staff has an interest in taking them. Two offensive linemen could very well be joining the program in that regard."

Seems like Howe thinks we will have interest in Urquidez. This makes sense to me. Staff seems to prefer Hudson and Urquidez over Raulerson.

Per 24/7, DT Jayden Peevy of Bellaire says UT has been in contact since de-committing from Baylor.

Based on Scholz predictions, I added these players to the class calculator to see how things would stack up.

When given an option between multiple players, I chose the lower ranking player. This gave a class score of 272.64, which would have been good enough for the 8th best class when using numbers from last year. (Texas was 11th with a 263, prior to adding our Baylor refugees)

I repeated this but used the higher ranked options and got a score of 297.70. This score would have been good enough for the number two class last year, behind Alabama. Swap in Dylan Moses for almost any other recruit and our score bumps to 305, good for 1st last year.

So, depending on how things fall I'd say our class will range anywhere from 2nd-8th. I think we would all be very happy with that, especially since this class won't be as large as the previous ones. Let's win some games and win some recruiting battles!

Quote from CB Chevin Calloway of Dallas Bishop Dunne after visiting Texas on Wednesday (OrangeBloods):

"I was really able to relate to them and just how they are trying to do something big with the program," Calloway said. "I can see the hunger and I can tell they really want me to be a part of it."

Scout is saying the Baylor signees who have requested releases should have their cases reviewed by the NCAA (the National Letter of Intent board, to be exact) at the end of June. Official rulings should come down in mid-July.

A few names that will be attending the summer camp on Sunday (24/7):

2017
QB, Sam Ehlinger, Austin Westlake
WR, Omar Manning, Lancaster
WR, Damion Miller, Tyler John Tyler
TE/DE, Dayo Odeyingbo, Carrollton Ranchview
LB, Kenneth Murray, Fort Bend Elkins
CB, Kobe Boyce, Lake Dallas
S, Donovan Stiner, Bellaire

2018
OL, Will Lawrence, Harding Academy (Memphis, TN)
S, Jordan Moore, Yoakum

Horns247 Nightly Notes:

— Riverdale (La.) outside linebacker Josh Clarke will make his commitment on Monday at 6 p.m. Right now, Texas appears to be a long shot. Clarke received an offer in the spring but has yet to visit. Ole Miss is the favorite.

— Houston Bellaire defensive tackle Jayden Peevy notched a new offer from Tennessee. As mentioned earlier today, Texas is showing interest in the former Baylor commit.

— Midland wide receiver McLane Mannix is starting to earn some attention on the recruiting trail after posting a couple of sub-4.4 forty times this summer. Army extended an offer today.

— Nacogdoches cornerback Josh Thompson added an offer from Fresno State. Thompson is receiving interest from Texas, but the Longhorns are still evaluating him. He could receive an offer down the line.

— Oklahoma hosted Plano East inside linebacker Anthony Hines, Waxahachie wide receiver Jalen Reagor, Cedar Hill wide receiver Charleston Rambo, Southlake Carroll safety Robert Barnes and 2018 Prestonwood Christian cornerback Verone McKinley III for unofficial visits yesterday.

The aggys are having their BBQ thing on Saturday. Bolded are names of interest to UT.

Brian Perroni:
Texas A&M is hosting a huge event this Saturday in its annual recruiting barbecue. Though there are some other camps going on and some players will be taking the ACT in the morning and making the trip after, the event will be an absolutely loaded affair. Texas A&M has 10 commitments in the class of 2017 and two in the class of 2018 and there are expected on campus. In addition to those prospects, these are some other big-time names that will be there.

QB Kellen Mond, IMG Academy: A&M’s top quarterback target, Mond will have the red carpet rolled out for him. Joined by a pair of IMG teammates on the trip, the Aggies could supplant Auburn as the new leader for the four-star quarterback from San Antonio and former Baylor commit.

WR Jhamon Ausbon, IMG Academy: Ausbon, who is from Houston and was also once a Baylor pledge, is roommates with Mond at IMG and the two are very close. If Mond ends up at A&M, then Ausbon’s Crystal Ball will start to trend back in favor of the Aggies.

LB Santino Marchiol, IMG Academy: Originally from Colorado, Marchiol lists a top three of A&M, Ole Miss and Tennessee and could make a decision soon. The Rebels are thought to be the leader but another trip to A&M, and with a pair of teammates at that, can’t hurt the Aggies’ chances.

OL Creed Humphrey, Shawnee, Okla.: One of the top centers in the country, Humphrey has seen his stock explode as of late. Though he has an offer from in-state Oklahoma, the Aggies look to be the team to beat here.

ATH Keldrick Carper, Plain Dealing, La.: Carper recently listed a top four that included A&M and he has the Aggies at the top of his list. He could play either wide receiver or defensive back and is one of the top athletes in Louisiana.

WR Hezekiah Jones, Stafford: Also a one-time Baylor commit, Jones is very close friends with Mond and Ausbon. He had early interest in A&M but hasn’t looked too closely at A&M as of late. Could that change this weekend with one of the fastest players in the state?

WR CeeDee Lamb, Richmond Foster: A former Oklahoma pledge, the four-star receiver from Greater Houston is very high up the Aggies’ board and A&M feels optimistic about its chances with him.

WR Mannie Netherly, Crosby: A one-time A&M commit, Netherly opened things up last month. Though LSU is seen as a very big threat with him, the Aggies hope to get him back on the commit list.

ATH Montrell Estell, Hooks (Texas commit): Estell made a somewhat surprising pledge to Texas recently after previously listing A&M as his leader. He will likely be recruited as a receiver by the Aggies.

TE Kedrick James, Waco La Vega: Another one-time Baylor commit, James fits the mold of an inline tight end but is also surprisingly agile after the catch. Even before decommitting from the Bears, he made several trips to Aggieland.

LB Kenneth Murray, Fort Bend Elkins: Murray has seen numerous offers come his way over the past month or so. He plans to visit both A&M and Texas on Saturday so he will have a chance to compare two of the perceived top three, Oklahoma being the other.

DE Ondario Robinson, Hutto: Robinson is in the Longhorns’ backyard and he was recently offered by Texas but he wants to check A&M out as well. Don’t sleep on Oklahoma with him though.

LB/S Devodrick Johnson, Dallas Kimball: A high school quarterback, some schools like Johnson at safety but A&M offered as a linebacker. Right now, he does not have the Aggies in his top group but they hope to change that.

RB Trelon Smith, Houston Cy Ridge: A standout at this past week’s two-day camp, the all-purpose back was invited back to attend the barbecue this weekend. He does not have an offer yet but one could come his way.

RB Toneil Carter, Houston Langham Creek (maybe): One of the two top running backs on A&M’s board, Carter has been to Aggieland numerous times. It is a battle with Georgia for his signature right now.

DE Addison Gumbs, Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep (maybe): The four-star pass rushers out of California has talked about possibly making the trip this weekend but, even if he does, he is going to be tough to pry from the Pac-12.

OT Alijah Vera-Tucker, Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O’Dowd (maybe): A somewhat new target for A&M, it would definitely be a sign of sincere interest if the four-star Californian pays his own way to Aggieland.

LB Anthony Hines, Plano East (maybe): The very first in-state player offered in the class of 2017 by A&M, Hines is one of the top inside linebackers in the nation.

WR Omar Manning, Lancaster (maybe): Once thought to be a strong Aggie lean, Manning has opened things up since blowing up this spring.

DT Corey Bethley, Katy (maybe): A lot of players from Katy do not usually focus much on recruiting until after their senior seasons so if Bethley misses the event, it shouldn’t be a huge deal.

OT/DT Joshua Rogers, Houston Christian (maybe): Also high on Houston and Baylor, the high school defensive tackle has a lot of schools intrigued by the possibility of him on the offensive line.

Rivals is holding their annual Five-Star Challenge this weekend in Atlanta.

OL Chuck Filiaga told OrangeBloods that UT is "up there" on his list of schools and he'll be moving to Aledo next week. He stays in regular contact with Strong and Mattox.

Scout says the UT staff expect to host WR Devin Duvernay tomorrow.

Per OrangeBloods, DT Marvin Wilson is NOT going to IMG in Florida. Tomorrow's announcement will be a Top 10.

From OB - Stud OL: Big update here. OL Adrian Ealy plans to take several visits this summer, and Texas is one of the places he'll be stopping to see. He's really, really high on Texas right now. In fact, he said he'd like to have a top five late summer or early in his senior season, and Ealy said he expects Texas to make the cut and he plans to take an official visit to Texas. He'll be an early enrollee and recently transferred out of Baton Rouge University Lab to East Ascension H.S. in Gonzales, La.

We play everyone's favorite recruiting game; Percentages. Some of UT's top targets have a busy summer and we'll breakdown each. We also look at a few newer prospects to appear on the Longhorns radar with notes and quotes. We take a closer look at what Texas Basketball will look like in 2016-17, and a surprise visitor is on campus today. So much goodness, so much Scoop.

From: Eric Nahlin

NO'SULLIVAN

This one turned on a dime. On Wednesday I heard Texas was going to be tough to beat for Florida baseball coach, Kevin O' Sullivan. By Thursday night, that was dispelled. The deal breaker was Florida stepping to the plate and giving the CWS favorite promises it would give him significant facilities upgrades and more support in general. Things in Gainesville were so bad O'Sullivan didn't even want to show recruits the clubhouse. He begged for a scoreboard and when he finally got one it didn't even have instant replay. That's not exactly how you treat a coach of his resume. Texas saw blood in the water and even a couple of "Sully's" closest friends thought he was Austin bound.

We'll try and find out who's next on the list.

COBB

I once again talked to Collis Cobb, the father of 2016 Waco La Vega defensive back, Parrish Cobb. The discussion wasn't centered around anything other than their situation and trying to get out of their NLI. Basically they're playing the waiting game. Baylor continues to give zero indication of what it intends to do. All the Cobb's know is Baylor must respond to their request to release by June 27th. To hear Mr. Cobb tell it, he wouldn't be surprised if Baylor makes them appeal their ruling. To say they're frustrated is an understatement.

Using my own powers of inference, I can't entirely rule out Texas and Cobb, but the numbers game is still the main thing to keep an eye on. It's very similar to the lead up to National Signing Day in that things can break in different ways and how one scenario plays out affects another.

VISIT SCHEDULES, NOTES, AND PERCENTAGES

You know the drill, visit plans can change on a whim. This is how things are looking thus far.

You're about to get a good idea of how bit this season is, not only for Texas, but for the state of Texas recruiting. If UT has a poor season, you'll see an exodus of talent like we haven't seen in years. A&M's recruiting is down, Baylor speaks for itself, and TCU, though likely producing a fine product on the field, is still TCU and will have a small class anyway. Some OOS schools will benefit even if Texas does well simply because of in-state dynamics.

WR Devin Duvernay, Sachse (Sachse, TX) - 2016
-Texas (June 11th)
-TCU (June 13th

Notes: Needless to say this is will be a huge couple of days for Devin the Duve. There isn't a whole lot more to add that we haven't already mentioned so I'll reiterate. Devin fully intends on playing with his brother who hasn't heard anything back on when or if he'll be released from Baylor. Because the second summer session isn't until mid-January, the Duvernays don't necessarily need to be in a hurry to decide, especially with Donovan still in limbo. An interesting point brought up to me by one of the coaches involved in the recruitment is if Donovan will be allowed to attend the visits. He shouldn't be allowed because of his situation with Baylor, but then again he's Devin's immediate family and he isn't officially enrolled at Baylor. I'm trying to get clarity on that.

There seems to be a buzz around OU's chances to land the Duvernay's but I don't think they're a real threat based on what I'm hearing. It seems to be close between Texas and TCU and both sides are pretty confident. This could very well come down to Charlie Strong and Sterlin Gilbert's discussion with Devin and his father. This is a big weekend for Sterlin Gilbert. As far as TCU goes, they're happy Duvernay will visit them after Texas.

Percentages: 60%. Perhaps a little high, this could very well be a coin-flip, but I have faith in Strong. I'll repeat what I've said over and over, they have to lament how much they want Donovan as well.

RB JK Dobbins, La Grange (La Grange, TX)
-Ohio State (June 14th)

Notes: The state's top running back will make his second trip Columbus since early spring. Let's get that not-so-great information out of the way.

After talking to a couple of college coaches on differing staffs, it's clear they're still getting some positive feedback from Dobbins. He certainly likes Ohio State - who wouldn't - but in my opinion this one isn't near over.

I talked to Dobbins on Thursday and he kept things his preferred, low-key way. He just doesn't want much out in the public domain. I don't blame him. While this isn't a recruitment that will play out very publicly I will say my confidence in Texas flipping him is as high as it has been, even if there's still a lot of work to do.

Texas does have one advantage Ohio State can't compete with; proximity and all the advantages associated with it, namely relationships, both family and otherwise.

Things will pick up more in the fall when Dobbins makes some official visits that will be impossible to keep private.

Percentages: 65% (gut feel, not based on anything JK has told me)

WR Omar Manning, Lancaster (Lancaster, TX)
-Texas (June 12th)
-wants to visit Ohio State

Notes: Omar is coming; this time for real. I checked with Omar and a coach at Lancaster to make sure this trip was for sure a go and as of this writing it is. Omar tells me he's most excited to meet the entire coaching staff, namely Charlie Strong. To this point he's only met Charlie Williams, Sterlin Gilbert, and Clay Jennings.

For all practical purposes I think this is a Texas/TCU battle (crazy how this is becoming a thing) though if Manning doesn't feel comfortable at either school he'll be content to go OOS. I don't think it will come to that. Usage and campus life are two big sticking points for Manning and both in-state schools can certainly sell being an outside receiver in their respective schemes.

Sunday provides Strong the opportunity to do what he did with Chevin Calloway earlier in the spring; lay the foundation for something more permanent.

Percentages: 55%. Seems high, but because I believe It will end up being a two-horse race, I think it's justified. Behind the scenes exit quotes will be big.

WR Tyrell Shavers, Lewisville (Lewisville, TX)
-N/A

Note: He'll visit Texas this summer but I have no idea when; probably UTL. Shavers doesn't really talk much. Word from a buddy of mine who recruits his area received is the common belief is the 6-foot-4 dual-sport athlete will end up at Texas. That jibes with my personal feeling but that's not much to go on. Keep in mind that Charlie Williams also has some built-in relationships here and Texas should have the pulse of this recruitment.

Percentages: 65%

OL Will Farrar, Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, TX)
-Texas Tech (June 11th)

Note: I'm mentioning Farrar so I can stress numbers a bit more. Depending on what happens with the Baylor fall out Texas could push hard for Big Will or perhaps back off. I'm not entirely sure but numbers at the position are definitely in the air. The numbers on OL for the 2017 class has a high variance at the moment.

Percentages: Ask me after the Baylor dust settles.

OL Walker Little, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX)
-Ohio State (June 16th)
-Florida State (June 17th)
-possibly Texas for UTL

Note: Little's a high priority and a take no matter what OL numbers become. He and Marvin Wilson will head to Ohio State next week which is a minor bad break for Texas as that's the date of the North Houston satellite camp. No biggie. Little has been diligent in getting to know all of his options and this summer is an example of that. He also visited Stanford with his family in May.

I'm still confident in Little ending up at Texas but the coaching staff will have a lot of fending off to do.

If you haven't noticed, Ohio State is doing well to get Texas talent to visit.

Percentages: 85%

QUOTABLE QUOTE:

“I’m definitely building a big relationship with Coach (Matt) Mattox up there. With him being a new OL coach, I definitely had a lot of ground to catch up on. I’ve been talking with him a lot. I like Coach (Charlie) Strong. I like what they are doing out there but I’m definitely going to see how they do this next season, see how they grow, see what kind of players they’re building, but I'm definitely interested in the Longhorns.” - Walker Little, 5-star OL (2017)

DT Marvin Wilson, Episcopal (Bellaire, TX)
-Ohio State (June 16th)
-Florida State (June 17th)
-possibly Texas for UTL

Note: I talked to Marvin on Thursday at the TCU Pearland satellite camp. He says he's still enjoying the process and he looked like it with a big relaxed smile on his face. He speaks very highly of Strong. I didn't want to talk too much Texas while at a TCU camp but he did let me know he'll most likely visit for UTL but if he misses that he'll make it back to Austin by the end of summer. We laughed about how different he looks from the first time I saw him at Texas camp.

"That was right after my freshman year, I look way different now," he said with a chuckle.

Side note: He's stated on Twitter he has a big announcement coming on June 11th. At this time I don't believe he's going to IMG. I'm not saying he 100% isn't but it would be a surprise to many if that were the case.

Side note #2: I have reason to believe he was at the TCU camp because of the presence of USC coaches. In fact the first person to run up to him was former USC All American and 1st round draft pick, Kenechi Udeze. The former Trojan stud spent some time talking to a gentleman who made Marvin look kind of small.

Percentages: 33%. I go back and forth on Wilson. This percentage isn't high but it puts Texas right at the top.

DE Taquon Graham, Temple (Temple, TX)
-wants to visit Oklahoma

Note: I feel as good here as I ever have, which is James Brown good.

Percentages: 85%

DE Ondario Robinson, Hutto (Hutto, TX)
-possible return visit to UT this weekend

Note: The local product visited on Monday and came away impressed. There's been some talk that Texas was late to offer Robinson but that's entirely overblown. This recruitment will go the way Strong wants it to.

Percentages: 75%

DE Robert Beal, Norcross (Norcross, GA)
-Alabama (June 12th)
-Florida State (June 15th)
-Notre Dame (June 18th)
-Texas (June 23rd)

Note: I haven't seen the Texas visit confirmed anywhere else but I've heard from a reliable source he intends to visit in a couple weeks. If that happens, that's pretty big. Texas needs to keep getting him to campus the rest of the way to have a chance. Notre Dame is in the same boat. Beal was initially committed to the Domers. My ND writer friends aren't confident Beal will re-commit despite his intentions to visit South Bend again.

If I'm Texas, I try and coax Beal back for the Texas vs Notre Dame game for a long weekend. I still think he'll end up at Georgia or Alabama.

Percentages: 20%. Fox/WDE is a big need in the cycle and as of now Texas doesn't have many offers out at the position. That's a sign of their confidence in Beal.

LB Baron Browning, Kennedale (Kennedale, TX)
-Notre Dame (June 17th)
-Michigan (June 20th)
-Ohio State (July 22nd)

Note: That return trip to Ohio State is a bit of a problem. 247 reported Browning's parents will accompany him on that visit. It would appear the Buckeyes have replaced the UCLA Bruins as the preferred OOS destination. Another issue is that date: July 22nd is a Friday and the UTL camp is either the 23rd or the previous Saturday. We're not sure yet.

Ohio State technically has two or three spots remaining in its class. That's both good and bad. Low numbers remaining puts Meyer in a bit of a position to soft-leverage (don't confuse this with an ultimatum) Browning. It's been stated Baron would consider deciding before the end of summer and this could be the final straw to motivate him to do so.

I still believe it's UT or OOS. Texas needs to try and get the entire Browning family back to campus ASAP.

Percentages: 60%.

LB Anthony Hines, Plano East (Plano, TX)
-Ohio State (June 12th)

Note: Yet another high priority Texas target visiting Columbus soon. There's some intriguing Master vs. Student recruiting drama taking place between Meyer and Strong.

Hines is currently in Norman with OU commits Robert Barnes, Charleston Rambo, and Jalen Reagor. You know they're giving him the hard sell. But what I know of Hines is he's his own man. Also, OU already has a commitment from a Mike near Hines' equal, Levi Draper.

Expect the Hines' to make it to Austin for UTL.

Percentages: 60%

LB Levi Jones, Westlake (Austin, TX)

Note: I don't know of any concrete plans for Jones but he's discussed hitting the West Coast. I also believe he'll be at UTL. I lean towards him going OOS for various reasons and I can see him out West or perhaps at LSU.

The thing to watch for is if Texas pushes for Kenneth Murray (I believe they will - he really impressed Bedford) or if, heaven forbid, Browning commits somewhere else by summer's end. The staff is really high on Jones but it's going to be an arduous recruitment, not that Strong has ever shied away from those.

Percentages: 30%

LB Dylan Moses, IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL)

Note: I'm not sure what Moses has planned for the summer but I would bet he makes it to campus before the season starts. When last we heard him speak openly about Texas, he proclaimed the Longhorns his #1 school. That's absolutely meaningless as far as where he'll end up, but good publicity.

Texas visited him a couple of times this spring out in Florida. They're recruiting him like he's a high priority and luxury at the same time.

LSU certainly fell by the wayside for a while but seems to be regaining its footing. The move from Baton Rogue to Florida probably helped LSU's chances because that relationship had grown contentious from what I've heard. If Moses wants to return home, then his school will become obvious.

He'll almost certainly end up at Texas, Alabama, or LSU.

Percentages: 20%

LB Kenneth Murray, Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City, TX)
-Texas (June 11th)
-Texas A&M (June 12th)

Note: Murray will be making his first visit to Texas since receiving his offer. I've always felt UT would be the team to beat if they offered in a timely fashion and that's what happened. If UT pushes hard I could see the staff landing him before the season. That written, you never know how hard Strong will push for a commitment. Will he wait until later to see how things play out with Levi Jones?

Murray, like Hines and Browning, is an early enrollee and would prefer to have his choice made by September. Keep an eye on Oklahoma here as well.

Percentages: 75%

CB Chevin Calloway, Bishop Dunne (Dallas, TX)
-Texas (June 8th)
-Wants to visit Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and LSU

Note: When you have ground to make up on a recruit, the quickest way to recover is to get that player to campus as often as possible. Strong really opened Calloway's eyes when he visited earlier in the spring, setting the stage for a return visit that occurred on Wednesday (Justin will have more). We believe Texas fits the profile of school Calloway is looking for and we wouldn't be surprised to see him return in July.

That said, it's going to be a long summer of visits for Calloway. He'd prefer to trim his list and then decide by the end of summer but with his options we expect this one to go deeper into the cycle.

I like what Texas is doing here and I can see them landing the player I believe is the top corner in the cycle.

Percentages: 40%. I'm hedging against my intuition right now. Don't be surprised if this jumps dramatically by mid-July.

CB Kary Vincent, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX)

Note: We wrote at the time that Vincent's May visit was a game-changer and we still feel that way. That visit, along with Justin's insistence, has me as a big buyer in this recruitment. I was skeptical at first but now I'm won over. I don't believe LSU or Ohio State will have the numbers at the end and I don't foresee Strong losing Vincent to Patterson, especially after the May visit where Strong hit Mariah Carey high notes. Vincent will also visit Austin again in a few weeks with his parents. It's trending nicely.

Percentage: 70%

CB Jeffrey Okudah, South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, TX)

Note: I'm pretty sure Okudah will visit Florida State soon and last month he visited Ohio State for the second time. He'll release a top six in the next month and I'm confident Texas will make that initial cut. That's where my confidence on him wanes.

Ohio State is still the team to beat and it's not very comforting that his visit to Columbus in May was with Baron Browning. Also not comforting that both Okudah and Browning have discussed making a decision by summer's end. I'm not saying they're a package or anything like that, but they seem comfortable with leaving the state and OSU presents an attractive option.

It's crucial for Texas to get him back to campus ASAP, perhaps with Browning.

Percentage: 20%

CALLOWAY OR VINCENT? How about both.

One of the top corners in-state for 2017, Chevin Calloway visited Austin yesterday for a little 1-on-1 time with Strong and the staff. Once these prospects get on campus, the odds of UT landing them increases considerably. Strong has a way of connecting with these guys. It went real well.

"I was able to relate to them and just how they are really trying to do something big with the program," said Calloway. "I spoke to almost every staff member. I can see the hunger and I can tell they really want me to be a part of it. Talking to coach Strong 1-on-1 really stood out."

For some kids, the recruiting process can be arduous and time-consuming. But for the Bishop Dunne (Dallas) prospect that boasts 30+ offers, he's taking it all in stride and grateful for the journey.

"This opportunity (being recruited) is a blessing," said the 5-foot-10, 180-pound 4-star DB. "I'm thankful because a lot of kids would want to be in my position and this might never happen for them. So I enjoy every little moment of it. I Love it."

He's going to Arkansas today and Ole Miss on Saturday. Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, and Michigan have offered and are on his radar as well. After that, he wants to come home, sit down with his parents, and narrow down his list. And I fully expect Texas to be on that list.

"I liked everything about Texas," Calloway said. "Really want to see how they do this year."

If Texas could land the two top corners in-state for 2017, they'd wrap up the position and start focusing on 2018.

War room

Typing fast and furious from a hotel room in Atlanta in between breaks at the Rivals.com National Convention, so let’s blow through these updates quickly …

As we mentioned earlier in the week, top Texas wide receiver target Omar Manning is planning to visit UT on Sunday. I still haven’t received confirmation if Manning will be working out at the camp or in town for an unofficial visit, but getting the Lancaster standout on campus is obviously a positive step for Texas.

Manning is not rushing through the process and is still considering about 10 schools, but as we’ve mentioned previously, there is some thought that some of the relationships between the new UT assistants and key people at Lancaster’s football program are helping UT’s chances in this one, so getting some time with Manning should only help strengthen UT’s position. We’ll try to follow up with him after the trip to get an update. (Suchomel)

EJ Holland:

Perhaps the biggest recruit on campus this weekend was Omar Manning. The four-star Lancaster wide receiver did not participate in UT’s second summer minicamp, but he did get an opportunity to tour the campus and the facilities and meet with the coaches. So where does Texas stand overall? “Texas was always one of my favorite schools growing up,” Manning said. “I like the tradition there. I think the direction is changing. Last year, they landed a big recruiting class. That really stuck out to me.” Right now, Texas is definitely in the mix along with schools like Ohio State, Oklahoma, TCU and Texas A&M.

For now, Manning wants to continue strengthening his relationship with head coach Charlie Strong and wide receivers coach Charlie Williams. Both spoke to Manning during his time on the Forty Acres. “I’m building a really great relationship with Coach Williams,” Manning said. “He actually came to my school twice in the spring. I like him a lot. I like Coach Strong, too. We are all just building better relationships with each other.” While the visit and getting face time with the coaches should help Texas, Manning's biggest question about the program remains unanswered — how will UT’s new offense look this season? “The offense is opening up, so I really want to see it,” Manning said. “I can’t get a feel for it on a visit. I just have to wait until the fall to see how it all comes together and how I would fit in and things like that.”

Manning said he has a Top 10 list but wants to keep it private and not post on social media. He is planning on making a verbal commitment before the season but added that he might push it back. At 6-foot-3, 203 pounds, Manning is ranked as the No. 22 wide receiver in the country and No. 24 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Devin Duvernay is expected to visit Texas this weekend, but in talking to a source on Thursday night, it doesn’t sound like the visit is set in stone. Texas is obviously hopeful that the standout receiver makes it in, but things are still up in the air.

A visit would be positive, but if Duvernay doesn’t make it in it’s not the end of the world. The person I talked to last night reiterated that Devin is not likely to make any sort of decision until his brother, Donovan, finds out what his situation is in regards to being let out of his Baylor letter of intent. The person I spoke with also felt like TCU is biggest threat to Texas right now, with Oklahoma running third.

Speaking of players getting let out of their letters of intent … a representative from the NCAA spoke at the Rivals.com convention on Thursday and fielded questions from the Rivals.com publishers. The situation with the potential Baylor signees came up, and the representative said the issue of players getting released will essentially be left to Baylor. It’s more of an in-house issue than it is something the NCAA would like to get involved with.

Sounds like this one could drag on a bit. (Suchomel)

A quick note on the nation’s top prospect, defensive tackle Marvin Wilson

There’s been a lot of talk about Wilson and LSU, but in talking to some people here at the Rivals.com convention, Florida State could be a team to watch. In fact, I’m told people inside the Florida State program feel the Seminoles are the team to beat right now.

******

In case you missed it on Thursday …

Dallas BishopDunne cornerback Chevin Calloway, one of the top players on the UT recruiting board, was in Austin on Wednesday for an unofficial visit. A Rivals100 member, Calloway tells me it was a very productive visit.

"I was really able to relate to them and just how they are trying to do something big with the program," Calloway said. "I can see the hunger and I can tell they really want me to be a part of it."

This follows up a visit Calloway made in April, which also made a strong impression. Back then, Calloway told me that visit helped UT’s chances. I expect this week’s visit did the same. (Suchomel)

A couple comments from Trinity Valley C.C. defensive back Curtis Jones, who made a very strong impression at last weekend’s mini-camp after clocking a 4.43 at 6-1 and 180 pounds.

“Everybody really liked my physical play, how I react to the ball,” Jones said. “I ran a fast 40 time too so they liked that. Overall I just had a good day.”

After the camp, the UT coaches brought Jones over to the football offices to sit down and talk. Vance Bedford told Jones he is now on UT’s radar, and Jones is planning to camp at Texas again on Sunday.

“He liked my physical play, liked my speed. He said he liked what I brought to the table. He said they’re looking for playmakers, not just athletes,” Jones said. “Coach Bedford is going to come watch me play during the season.” (Suchomel)

Some comments from brothers Jordan Moore and Joshua Moore, both of whom picked up scholarship offers from Texas after UT’s camp last weekend.

Jordan – “At the beginning I was hoping because my mom went here and it’s been my favorite school ever since I could walk and for them to offer me … for me to compete like I did today … I went from running a 4.68 on my 40 time and I got with former Longhorn D.J. Monroe and he bumped me down to a 4.43 today. I’m excited about that. I knew once I ran that 4.43 it was just in me and I was going to come out and ball today.”

Texas is talking to Jordan about playing defensive back. Joshua is a receiver.

Joshua – “Like he said, my mom graduated from here so that will play a really big factor if we decide to come here or not. I wasn’t expecting an offer at all. We came out here and did what we could and performed to the best of our abilities.”

Jordan, on schools that are standing out – “I’d say A&M, my dream school UT, LSU hasn’t offered but they’re standing out, TCU, Houston.”

Joshua on schools that are standing out – “OU, Texas, A&M, UTSA, Texas Tech”

Jordan is scheduled to camp at Texas again on Sunday. Josh is scheduled to be here in Atlanta for the Underclassmen Challenge. (Suchomel)

A quick rundown of the players we’ll be tracking down today as they check in for the Five-Star Challenge …

RB Najee Harris – Committed to Bama but holds a UT offer.

TE Mustapha Muhammad – 2018. Holds a Texas offer.

WR DeVonta Smith – UT offer. Texas has ground to make up here but worth checking on.

OL Adrian Ealy – UT offer. Another one that is a bit of a longshot but worth checking on.

OL Chuck Filiaga – He got in last night. Just saw him. Massive kid. Will talk to him shortly.

OL Walker Little – One of the top priorities for this weekend.

DL Robert Beal – Looking forward to talking to him. Texas is high on his list but he doesn’t do many interviews so this will be a good chance to get caught up.

DL Marvin Wilson – No-brainer.

LB Baron Browning – Another no-brainer.

ATH Dylan Moses – I’ll be curious to hear if Texas is still listed as his leader.

LB Tyler Taylor – Visited UT over Memorial Day weekend and really enjoyed it.

DB Anthony Cook – 2018, picked up a UT offer last week after the mini-camp.

DB Grant Delpit – Texas not really in the mix here, but worth checking on.

DB Jeffrey Okudah – I still feel Texas has a lot of ground to make up, but the Longhorns are at least in the race.

DB BJ Foster - Top player on the 2018 LSR.

No. 2 – The power within the Class of 2017 ...

The more and more I think about the statement I made from the weekend, the more and more I’m convinced that when we’re talking about Houston Episcopal defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, we’re talking about one of the two or three best players at his position from the state of Texas since I’ve been in the college football recruiting industry, a statement I make while acknowledging that he wasn’t as dominant this weekend in Atlanta as he has been in almost every other setting he’s been in as a prospect.

While the likes of Malcom Brown, Rod Wright and Frank Okam represent five-star defensive tackle prospects from the past, Harris and Wilson rank above those three.

Call them the rare six-star.

Yet, more than the discussion of Wilson’s magnitude of a prospect, the thing that stood out to me over the weekend as I considered the history of it all is the realization that Wilson isn’t the only in-state prospect we can talk about in those tones.

Fellow five-star prospect Baron Browning is in the exact same type of discussion, as I’d include him with the likes of Derrick Johnson, Sergio Kindle and Malik Jefferson as the best linebackers this state has produced in the last two decades. As the No.9 overall prospect in the country, you can go ahead and put South Grand Prairie five-star Jeffrey Okudah in that conversation of elite of the elite defensive backs. Hell, there might not have been a more impressive player from the Lone Star State this weekend that Okudah.

All three of those players rank among the top 10 nationally of all prospects in 2017.

The math over the last five years suggests that nearly two-thirds of five-stars are likely to emerge as NFL Draft prospects in every class (40-percent will go in the first three rounds), so at the very least we’re talking about three very special prospects without the added hyperbole. With the added hyperbole, they reach a separate level.

Call them six-stars… must-haves in every sense.

No. 3 – Rivals Five-star links...

With the completion of the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge this week, I thought I’d make it easy for everyone by providing links to all of the information in one easy-to-click spot.

Enjoy.

No. 4 – Scattershooting on the Longhorns ...

… The only way this baseball coaching search is a success is if they hire someone with at least one national championship. Otherwise, Texas didn’t get what the job should demand.

… John Burt might not have made a lot of noise at the NCAA Championships this weekend while finishing seventh in his heat, but just remember that he is one of only two freshmen to have qualified for the national finals. He’s a guy that has to have the ball in his hands more this season. Explosive.

… The best thing the Texas Longhorns have going for it in the pursuit of Devin Duvernay is the presence of its 2015 and 2016 recruiting classes, which includes freshman quarterback Shane Buechele. Let’s keep it real by saying Texas is only in this race because its quarterback position has a light at the end of the tunnel. As he takes his time to evaluate his opportunities, it would probably go a long way if players like Buechele and Malik Jefferson continue to sell the idea of being apart of a special group of players that are headed towards great things.

… Eventually, Patrick Hudson and the rest of the Baylor signees that want to go elsewhere are going to have to make more noise and create yet another national uproar in order to force that administration to do right by the kids and not just its own football needs. That’s what got Baylor in this position in the first place.

… Charlie Strong being late for a press conference on Friday because his plane landed at the wrong airport? Of course, that happened.

No. 5 – Buy or sell …

(As always, all of these questions were submitted by actual Orangebloods subscribers.)

BUY or SELL: Shane Buechele is announced as the starter more than one week ahead of kickoff against Notre Dame?

(Sell) I’ll take the under and say he’s announced on the Monday of game week, five days in advance of the game.

BUY or SELL: NCAA remains hands off and none of Baylor's 2016 recruits, other than Duvernay, ends up playing elsewhere in 2016?

(Sell) Eventually, there will be a public uproar over this story and Baylor will give in.

BUY or SELL: Shane Buechele is capable and of a Josh Rosen type season is if he stays healthy?

(Buy) 23 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 135-ish quarterback rating? Sure, he’s capable of that.

BUY or SELL: Walker Little and Marvin Wilson play for the same university in two years?

(Sell) Going with the smart money.

BUY or SELL: Hard to believe this is even a possibility, but Art Briles is Baylor's head coach in 2017?

(Sell) It’s a crackhead dream for people refusing to live in reality.

BUY or SELL: CS, the poster, has a clue?

(Buy) I’m… I mean he… when he’s not in disagreement with me, he usually has lots of clues.

BUY or SELL: Sansa Stark is savvy enough to outsmart Littlefinger?

(Sell) She’s in over her head.

BUY or SELL: Hypothetical World Cup final. You'd rather have Messi in his prime than Maradona in his prime?

(Buy) I’m going with recent confirmation bias.

EJ Holland:
Fort Bend Elkins linebacker Kenneth Murray always had a soft spot for Texas. He grew up watching the Longhorns, showed up to The Opening Houston Regional in UT gear before he even earned an offer and said it was ‘huge’ when Texas did in fact put a scholarship on the table last month. After making an unofficial visit to Texas on Saturday morning, Murray said the Longhorns are without a doubt one of his top schools. “My visit went really well,” Murray said. “Some of my favorite parts were just sitting down with the coaches and joking around with them. It was really cool and my family really liked what they had to say. I think Texas is heading in the right direction as far as being great again. I don’t care about wins this season. I just want to see some overall improvement.”

Murray added that he is a supporter of Texas head coach Charlie Strong and believes he is doing a ‘great job’ with the program. Murray and his family had an opportunity to meet with Strong after they toured the campus and the facilities. Murray said he appreciated the unorthodox approach Strong took with his recruiting pitch. “He actually told me not worry about them or recruiting,” Murray said. “He told me that I would always have a scholarship with the Texas Longhorns and to go out and focus on being the best player for my team. I liked that. I respect him and so does my family.”

At 6-foot-2. 210 pounds, Murray is a versatile prospect that can play both inside and outside linebacker as well as safety. Texas is recruiting him as a defender rather than pigeonholing him to one position. While Texas is in great shape with Murray early on, the Longhorns will have to battle against the likes of Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, a school he also visited on Saturday. “The visits were about the same except A&M had some good barbecue,” Murray said with a laugh. “But I talked to Coach (Kevin) Sumlin the same amount of time as I did with Coach Strong. Both had a great family environment. Texas just has a different atmosphere. I don’t know how to explain it.”

Murray plans to visit both Texas and Texas A&M again later this summer. He also hopes to see Oklahoma at some point in July. An early enrollee, Murray wants to make a commitment before the season but might opt to wait. The three-star prospect is ranked as the No. 59 outside linebacker in the state and No. 113 overall prospect in the country, according to 247Sports Composite.

The number of D1 baseball coaches with a national championship who (1) aren't over 55, (2) haven't already reupped at their current job, and (3) have the right offensive philosophy may be zero. I said under 55 because I'm hoping for another 20-year hire for our 5th coach.

I wouldn't be so quick to sell Briles in '17. Don't underestimate the level of sliminess possible from that Waco cesspool

May mean something, may not. WR Devin Duvernay now following Strong, Coach Gilbert, Coach Williams, Coach Traylor and Ehlinger on Twitter.

OrangeBloods reporting TE/DE Dayo Odeyingbo did not show for camp on Sunday, but he'll be at the Dallas satellite camp this week.

Higdon Chat:

Devin Duvernay?

I believe he wants to come to Texas. He knows the WR depth chart at Texas is MUCH better at Texas vs. TCU. I think his parents are a bit unsure right now because Texas never truly offered Donovan during the recruiting cycle, while all these other teams did. The truth of the matter is Texas was the ONLY school who was honest with this situation regarding offering Donnovan back in the day. SO we will wait and see what unfolds.....The last I heard they wanted both boys to enroll together.......I am not even going to speculate on what if....so for me, I wait and see what happens at the end of this month regarding a release or not.....

If Briles is back for 2017 does Baylor keep all kids from the 2016 class?

not imo....this is about the all mighty dollar, don't let anyone tell you otherwise...its not about anything other than money, period....Its not about whose to blame, who they should have had hired or anything else anyone can think of --This is about the end result, the dollar....

Any updates on Fowler and Southall?

won't know anything on either for a while...if they do what they are supposed to they should be ok...Southall is doing really well

With his Top 10 released, where do you think Texas stands with Marvin Wilson?

I would think in that top 4 of Texas, LSU, OU and maybe one more team.....UTL will be key for more than a few kids including Big Marv. It could start and end with Marvin. He is the No 1 inside guy on the board --but for me, this is not a position I am paying much attention to at all...

How did things go with Omar Manning?

They went good, he spent a bunch of time with Sam and the coaching staff....He is a very very hard kid to get a read on..not just for me, but for the coaching staff as well.... I think he is spread out right now with Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, OU, TCU and Texas......

Jordan Moore seems to be all Texas right now. It's still super early but could you see him committing and shutting it down?

I believe that is something that is possible. I am not predicting the "when" over the "who" you know that by now, however, he would be one of my "who'. I can tell you Joshua loved his trip to Georgia though, loved it....

If NSD was tomorrow, who are Dylan Moses and Robert Beal inking with?

Alabama and Texas, respectively. With Beal, there is some behind-the-scenes stuff for sure but it's also a bit of what I believe is going to happen moving forward --as I have said with him, his next trip will be huge--I will know everything I need to know in about a week or so..... Charlie has done a good job with this one. Beal has good relations with Texas, but better than other schools? Not sure, I don't know what kind of relations he has with other places....all I know is he is about to make his 3rd or 4th trip and this won't be his last to Texas...

Out of the elite prospects (Hines, Browning, Wilson, Okudah, Manning, Calloway, Beal, etc), which ones can you see shutting it down before the season starts?

I would be stunned and I mean stunned if ANY of those kids announced a public decision prior to the season starting....

Any players you feel worse about inking with Texas today than you did last week?

Not that I am aware of my friend... One side note though...Baylor being a private school can do whatever they want...they won't fire Briles imo with cause bc of the cash they would owe him. They can't pay for their stadium without these donations...I am "starting" to believe he gets the 1-year suspension.....Baylor is Crazy LMAO.....

Who finishes with the better class, Texas or OU?

It will be a battle between the two all year and up until NSD. I am going with Texas in the end -- all they are lacking are some wins....

Do you think Marvin Wilson and Walker Little end up at the same school? If you could only take one, who would it be?

I always go OL if given the choice and you gave me the choice so Walker Little...and its 100% up in the air, they could end up at the same school but they are NOT tied together at all...if they ended up at the same school its just by chance.....Walker Little will be at Texas over the summer from what I have been told, yes sir...

How does the staff think about their chances with Jeffrey Okudah?

They don't feel good with him... Even if we win big this year, he has never seemed very pro Texas to me... When I was covering UF the hardest thing fans had a hard time with was kids who simply didn't like UF. Maybe they grew up liking Miami or FSU, the UF fans could never understand how a kid could do that. I think this is the same case with Okudah...I simply think he isn't a fan of Texas football for whatever reason...

Is this coaching staff adjusting to the IMG effect??

What's different? I am confused with this question sir. I don't know what the IMG effect is?

How much influence does the staff let players have in the scouting and talent identification process?

They have ZERO influence as far as who to offer....However, any slap joe off the street can tell a coach about a recruit AND they will always check the kid out regardless...Recruiting is about doing your homework...regardless of where the information comes from...They would investigate the red flag....

Is Stephan Zabie still getting a look from the staff?

He is on the board, they are well aware of him.

Are you concerned about a position group thus far this cycle in terms of where Texas sit with their top targets?

I would say DB probably because lack of numbers in my mind....after that I would probably go with WR -- but even at WR based on how I think the season goes with Shane they will be ok on NSD

Is Lagaryonn Carson still a solid commitment to us?

He is solid to Texas, that I can say. As for his grades, time will tell all my friend.

Anything from Chuck Filiaga?

Every recruiting cycle there is a kid who I have a difficult time gauging. This year, it’s Chuck. I could see this kid ending up at a number of schools including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon or even Washington. This kid imo is wide open and I mean wide open. He rarely does interviews. With kids like this I find myself watching what they do, where do they visit etc. I “think” Texas will have a shot as well as Oklahoma. He is not a kid that I am factoring into the Texas NSD plans though.

True or False, wide receivers will flock to Texas in order to play with Shane?

I can't say that until he proves himself but I am not worried about his abilities as a QB. I think, mostly the kids focus more on the kids they are coming in with. In this case Sam Ehlinger...but, yes they want to see this offense take flight....see what I did there lol....flock -- flight.....I could not resist.....

Any chance you can put a mock OL class for 17?

Foreshadowing is a dangerous game for me to play. I tend to stay away from that "this" time of year. I can say I think Texas is in a good spot with OL today. Stanford could be a team Texas will need to beat for at least one kid at the end of the day....

Damn, Tyrell Shavers a 6'6" WR with 4.3 speed just announced to Bama. We were in his top choices. I was really hoping we'd get him. Still a while before signing day, so I guess I can still dream.

I think we end up with him. That Bama luster will wear off, and Texas is going to pick up steam during the season.
