Recruiting Thread 2017

All I can say is, Strong now needs to hold his end up and start winning. Kids pick Texas because they ultimately want to play for championships, it's time for Strong to do that.

I've said this many times, Strong is a great recruiter, he is a great molder of character, he runs a clean program and he holds everyone associated with his program accountable.

He now has to prove he is a football coach. He has to prove he can win games and win championships. If he does that he will be here for a very long time, if he doesn't he will be gone within 24 months.

I agree with this 100%.........I like Strong. I think he is a great man and the players love him. I want him to be the MAN at Texas and win Championships and get Texas back up there where Texas belongs.....but we can't have the TERRIBLE hires, and the Iowa St's, tcu's and ark's, and expect everyone to lineup and kiss his ass. We need to play like we did against ou EVERY GAME.

Respectfully, can we please keep this thread focused on recruiting news instead of debates about Strong's job performance, abilities as a coach, and so forth? I've seen what seem like carbon-copy posts about this on at least two other threads.

Back to recruiting: the latest 2 CBs for 5-star OLB and Baylor commit Baron Browning have him going to Texas. I'll ignore the one from Chris Hummer, since the Horns247 folks are pretty weak on recruiting info overall (and everything else), but the other CB (and the first one entered) is from aggy247 writer Brian Perroni.

Very interesting...

Anyone have or seen a list for UT's Junior Day on Feb 27th? Supposed to be some really big names there. Possibly a couple commits could happen as well, we know 2 '17 recruits wanted to announce on signing day but Strong told them to wait bc he wanted his '16 recruits to have their day.

I think the 17' class will be about getting the best of the best and not quantity. Look for 18 to 22 takes this year.

Attrition always happens, they will probably sign close to a full class if not full. 22-24 players IMO

We have a log jam at WR surely some of those guys see the writing on the wall and look elsewhere after the Spring.

I would tend to agree. 14 WRs is a lot. Off the top of my head, Warrick, Oliver and Gray aren't in the 3 deep and might be looking around. That's the position most ripe for attrition IMO.

Max Allen: Back in early December Colleyville Heritage (TX) Kicker Max Allen announced plans to walk-on at Texas. After talking to Allen yesterday, It doesn’t look like that is the plan any longer. Allen told me “there was an admissions problem and I couldn’t get help by both the football and admissions offices” so he has decided to head to Oklahoma State. Allen also mentioned that he is choosing to head to Stillwater because he has been given nearly a full academic scholarship at Oklahoma State. It will be interesting to see if Texas offers a 2017 kicker because the only schlorship kicker on campus is Senior Nick Jordan. – (Andrew)

Bernard too. Hope a few of those guys go find playing time elsewhere.

Two notes from 24/7...

-DE Lagaryonn Carson should be in town for Junior Day on February 27th.

-They believe WR Montrell Estell from Hooks could be close to an offer. His offer list (per 247) includes: Arizona State, Kansas (offered 5/11/15), SMU, Texas State, Texas Tech (offered 5/9/15). Had a visit from Traylor on May 13, 2015 and attended UTL last year.

Higs yesterday:

  • re: 2016 class "I'm 100% done with the class of 2016. Unless it's a Texas kid and it's a grades issue"
  • thinks Texas will be the front runner w/ Browning and Hines
  • aTm is going to be in "desperation mode" this cycle (even more than last cycle if you can imagine it)
  • does not think Texas takes 2 QB this cycle
  • TE Brock Wright is "very happy where he is" (for those who are unaware, he wants to go to out of state and ND is evidently his dream school. he has been committed to ND since 6/26/16)
  • re: Toneil Carter "I will say, as of now no chance"
  • "will find out" about staff addressing kicker
  • it will be a "long process" with regard to Marvin Wilson
  • re: Anthony Johnson (current Toledo RB coach) and Louis Ayeni (former Toledo RB coach, at Iowa State)
"Couple of guys from Toledo, one prior one currently. Ayeni is a great guy. Both are great people from what I've been told. AJ clearly has the Texas ties etc...all the coaching stuff should be played out and finished this month for sure"

"AJ will have an interview on Tuesday"

From Ryan Bartow, National Recruiting Insider, his predictions on what commitments will happen this Spring. He CB'ed the following 3:

Texas finished as strong as anyone on National Signing Day. The Longhorns have four in the boat early this cycle and could be adding to the commit list soon with the likes of four-star running back J.K. Dobbins, four-star defensive end Taquon Graham and four-star linebacker Levi Jones.

3 more 4-star predictions: EJ Holland just got his early CBs in - OT Walker Little, OT Grayson Reed and WR Camron Buckley to UT.

I've read that Marvin Wilson is a beast of a prospect. And is a heavy UT lean. But that he will most likely go down to the wire and be a NSD commitment to his choice.

We need a scholarship kicker every other year !!!

Here are Tuesday's notes on Texas targets from EJ Holland:

— Four-star 2017 Cedar Hill wide receiver Camron Buckley will be at Texas junior day on February 27. Buckley is high on both Texas and TCU but does not want to make an early decision.

— Sachse quarterback Jalen Mayden might be in the 2018 class, but the staff invited him to junior day, and he plans on attending. By the way, Mayden picked up a big offer from Ohio State today.

— Hooks athlete Montrell Estell reported new offers from Arizona State, SMU and Texas State. A three-star prospect, Estell is one of the most intriguing prospects in the state. We will have more on him tomorrow.

— Houston Lamar safety Grant Delpit notched a new offer from Purdue. Delpit camped with Texas at Under The Lights and is a prospect to keep an eye on. He currently holds seven offers.

— Another prospect to monitor is Lake Dallas cornerback Kobe Boyce. I mentioned him in the notes on Sunday, and today he picked up his first offer from Iowa State. Boyce should blow up this spring.

Higdon Chat:

Texas info on a couple of prospects:

Poster:
where would you say Texas sits with these prospects:
J.K. Dobbins
Walker Little
Derrick Tucker
Levi Jones
Grayson Reed
Marvin Wilson
Camron Buckley

JH:
  • Good shape
  • no chance imo
  • Grades need to improve but likes Texas
  • Hines and Browning top dogs
  • loves Texas
  • Could be only one of a few DT's Texas even recruits
  • They really like this kid

Taquon Graham: I caught up with 2017 DE Taquon Graham (Temple, TX) yesterday who confirmed that he will be in attendance at the Texas Jr day later this month. I asked Graham if an early commitment was possible and he said, “Not just yet…I haven’t come close to a decision”. However, a few weeks back he did mention that it had crossed his mind. As most of you know Graham is teammates with 2016 WR signee, Davion Curtis, and I certainly see him as a Texas lean at the moment. Though I must say with long athletic DEs like Earnest Brown and others emerging in the region, it’ll be interesting to see if Graham remains a top target. – (Super K)

Derrick Tucker: Manvel (TX) S Derrick Tucker is Texas’ top target at the safety position right now. I caught up with Tucker recently and he told me that he plans to attend Texas A&M’s JR Day on February 28th and is going to try to make Texas’ JR Day on the day before as well.

Tucker is very high on Texas right now, and if he doesn’t make it to Austin on the 27th I fully expect him to attend Texas’ 2nd JR Day. – (Andrew)

Player Note | Kai Locksley: Right now the team is going through Pat Moorer’s off-season program as spring practice nears. I was told that some QBs, WRs, and DBs have been getting together to work 1-on-1’s.

Apparently, QB Kai Locksley has been putting in a lot of extra work and is looking good in his reps. One source said, “he has the arm and can also throw on the run better (than the other QBs)…he has been more dedicated than any of the other QBs off the field”.

That jives with what we heard from sources who saw him in the final scrimmage of fall camp last year. It’s obviously too early to tell how this quarterback race will shake out but this is an open competition and a new offensive staff and system. So, they’re all going to get a chance to prove to Gilbert that they’re right guy including guys like Locksley who probably isn’t at the forefront of most fans’ minds. – (Andrew & Super K)
