Recruiting Thread 2017

Time is a damned funny thing. Reletive is correct. This last hour has dragged on forever, but the last decade went by in a blink!

Bama, LSU and Auburn should all be light years ahead of Aggy next year.
Agreed with LSU hiring Canada away from Pitt to go along with Coach O, they could have that team fun to watch. If LSU can find an offense, they will be back on top in a relatively short time. They were close this year without a semblance of an offense. If they could score 25 a game, that defense would be real tough to beat.

doesnt look good for Little either......might not be our best year for recruiting.

aggy sucks every year, but next year is going to be even worse than their usual suckage. :D
but they are a playoff team....oh wait... ;)

we are only taking about 18 recruits so it doesn't have to be a topo 10, it just has to fill in the gaps and give some depth. I did expect a bigger kick from Herman but we were a 5-7 team with no bowl, lets see how he closes out. I doubt it will be Charlie style though.

I figure Little is Stanford bound and it is not a big deal. I'd love to have him on the forty.

Some upticks in recruiting. Things currently looking good for:

TONEIL CARTER

Will Tom Herman catch his first break?

With Georgia telling Toneil Carter they want him to enroll in the Summer rather than mid-January, he decided to de-commit this morning. This is the same Georgia who pressured him not to take any visits ahead of the dead period.

Not taking a visit the weekend of the 10th puts a crimp in UT's chances to flip him but they're not dead in the water. There are some who are close to Carter who would prefer to see him at Texas close to home. Herman and Meekins were wise to target him almost immediately upon being hired.

Baylor is also pushing but they're playing from way behind. A&M is almost certainly not going to push and are likely done at the position.

The goal for Texas will be to get Carter in for a visit immediately after the dead period (ends on Jan. 11th). This is not unlike the Zach Shackelford situation last year. The thinking is Carter could visit, and then basically stay.

With Carter de-committing from Georgia this morning, that changes a few things and certainly helps Herman and the Horns but he's exploring all of his options. He'll be in the Under Armour game in early January but unfortunately there won't be much of a positive Longhorn influence out there.

We'll see.

TAQUON GRAHAM

I know there's a lot of fear about losing the Temple defensive end but it's largely misplaced.

He is still listening to OU but that's largely because they've been contacting him so much for so long and went by Temple yet again before the dead period.

At this point he's UT's to lose and he really likes DL coach Oscar Giles and how he'll be deployed. Herman has called him a couple of times to talk but Taquon and his mother want to meet him face to face to get a good feel for him. At that point Herman will likely close the deal.

Graham's also being pushed by Michigan and Alabama but we don't see him going far from home. Texas is the big leader with OU having a slight chance to flip him.

Graham will visit Austin for the big OV weekend starting January 20th. He may also take an OV to OU.

SOME POTENTIAL NEW OFFERS

We're expecting a decently busy week of offers but I don't know for sure who will be given the call. Here are some possibilities if not this week then ahead of NSD.

OT Henry Klinge, Southlake Carroll: I posted about him in the Prospect Board but in case you missed it he's really interesting prospect. He missed his Junior year but there was speculation back to his Sophomore season that he was the best OL in the Dragon program. That includes A&M commit Carson Green (finally saw his film, good player). Klinge is 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, so his ability to bend and create leverage at a nearly college ready size is a big positive. I sent his tape to Halas and he's a fan, citing only concerns about stiffness on outside zone. One college coach put it to me, "He's going to blow up over the next few weeks. Big guys this late are hard to find and schools will start scrambling." One school scrambling is Baylor and they've already offered. Klinge has been hearing from Texas and has been told they're still evaluating him. He's also hearing from TCU, Tech, Houston, Boise State, and some others. As offers collect, he'll hear from more schools.

WR DJ Edwards, West Palm Beach, FL: Edwards was contacted by new WR coach Drew Mehringer last night. Any time I get a new Florida name I go straight to Andrew Spivey from Gator Country. Said he, "He's athletic as hell and did a good job at Florida's camp. He has a case of the drops and needs to get better at route running but Florida is dumb for not offering because of his athletic upside. Here's another guy you guys should go after -- Marlon Williams. He's committed to USC but is looking around. Edwards is hearing from tons of schools and holds a Rutgers and Houston offers, meaning the current staff has already signed off on him twice.

I passed Marlon Williams' name along. Williams is from Mobile and would likely visit if Texas offered. Along with USC he's hearing the most from Florida State, LSU, and Auburn. His 247 profile has him down for a 3.90 shuttle. Alrighty then. We'll see if Texas makes contact.

WR Michael Young, Destrehan, LA: I'm expecting Young to hear more with so much uncertainty at Notre Dame, the school who currently holds his commitment. He says he's pretty firm but he may listen to Texas because of how high his former teammate, Gerald Wilbon, speaks of the school.

NEW MEMBER OF SUPPORT STAFF?

There's speculation that former A&M Consolidated head coach David Raffield will join the support staff in some sort of high school liaison role. Herman elected to retain Hardy McCrary for a similar role so this is just him building out the staff further, assuming it happens.

Raffield and Herman apparently go back a number of years and I believe Raffield was mentioned in Herman's first press conference. Before being head coach at A&M-C, he was the head man at Cy Falls for a number of years.

He's also a graduate of the University of Texas.

BREWER

Texas finding difference makers at tight end has been like going down a wormhole with no end in sight. Projects, jucos, and possible future OT's have been inked since nabbing Blaine Irby in 2008.

But 2017 was going to be different. The previous staff put all their eggs in the Major Tennison basket. The 4-star from Bullard pledged to Texas early and they weren't going to offer another to ensure they kept Tennison in the fold. That blew up in their face when Gilbert and the dad didn't get along, Major de-committed and flipped to Bama.

The backup plans weren't sexy. They started looking out-of-state when they should have looked down the road. You see, Lake Travis had a 6-foot-3, 225-pound pass catcher from the 6A DI State champs, Cade Brewer. He held offers from OU, Texas A&M, and OSU, but committed to SMU because of his QB, his relationship with Chad Morris, and his loyalty.

When Herman got the job, he went to see LT and Westlake battle in the playoffs soon after. He left the stadium wondering why UT had never reached out to Brewer. He was going to change that. An offer appeared 24 hours later. A visit came two weeks later.

"I like Texas," said Brewer. "Met and talked with coach Herman for a little bit then I went to go look at the facilities, then went to go look at the dorms and campus. They said I could have a chance to come in and play early if I put in the work."

The best part is Brewer holds no ill will towards Texas. He says he thinks they didn't recruit him for lack of size. But in this day and age, and in Herman's system, a pass-catching threat like Brewer is a must. In Gilbert's Veer and Shoot, it wasn't.

Two weeks ago, I was told Brewer was sticking to SMU. Now, he's starting to think UT. This is trending nicely for the Longhorns as we approach the holidays. January is going to be a bumpy, but fun ride in recruiting land.

For the record, I really like the other TE offer, Reese Leitao (Jenks, OK), who just so happened to de-commit from Nebraska last night. And Texas wants to take two tight ends in 2017's class. Just sayin.

MOORE TO ANNOUNCE ON CHRISTMAS EVE

If you follow recruiting at Inside Texas, you're very familiar with the Moore twins, Jordan and Joshua, from Yoakum. They've visited UT half a dozen times in 2016 and professed their Longhorn love to Eric, Joe, myself, and anyone else who would listen this past season.

Jordan, 6-foot-0, 175, announced he was ready to commit awhile back on Christmas Eve. We all assumed he'd push back the date, but he told me after the Bulldogs dropped the 3A DII title game to Mineola on Thursday night that he would in fact drop a Top 10 (big smile), then his decision on December 24th.

I told him I wanted his Top 5, not 10, and one thing he loved about each school.

Texas- "I love it! Childhood favorite, it feels like home."
A&M- "I fell in love as soon as I stepped on campus."
Ohio State- "It's lovely. Winning team and is a huge family."
OU- "The team treated me like family, DB plays physical, and is a old team."
Houston- "Family ties. I really liked it there. Great atmosphere."

At the end of the day, I think Santa Claus could be bringing Texas fans a DB for Christmas. I just hope he doesn't try to go through the chimney.

COMMITS TALK ORLANDO

The worst kept secret in all of Austin was the impending hire of Defensive Coordinator, Todd Orlando. We knew it, you knew it, and the players knew it. He's said as much following UH's Las Vegas Bowl loss.

A couple of pledges reached out for a quick thought on their future coach.

"It's really a great hire, " said Lake Dallas' Kobe Boyce. "I can't wait to be coached by him."

"I knew it was coming," said Nac's Josh Thompson. "I'm excited. Can't wait to ball out and get coached by him and coach Washington."

Texas should make this official at some point this week. Once the staff is finalized, then we'll be cooking with gas.

RECENT OFFERS

San Antonio Reagan's Derek Kerstetter was a little surprised when he got the call. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive lineman and Oklahoma State offer has been solid to the Cowboys since last summer. He's supposed to visit Texas after the dead period, but his focus is on the Army Bowl right now.

"I'm looking forward to the Army All American game," Kertetter said. "It'll be so much fun."

Does Texas have a shot?

"I'm strongly considering UT," said Kerstetter. It's a start.

When Carrollton Ranchview DE Dayo Odeyingbo received his offer, his response to a colleague was, "WTF?"

His response to IT about possibly taking a visit, "Not sure."

This is another offer that took too long, lack of communication, relationships, blah blah. As we've documented, Strong may have left Herman was plenty of groceries for this week, but next week's dinner was barely planned.

He ends up at Vanderbilt with his brother is my best guess.

TIDBITS

The word on the street is that North Shore DE/OLB K'Lavon Chaisson is recruiting for Texas behind the scenes. Everything I hear says Texas. Except for Chaisson, who isn't the easiest person to get a hold of. Two guys he's really going after are Wylie East RB Eno Benjamin and Lancaster WR Omar Manning. OU and LSU are making a late push for his services, but at the moment I feel confident UT is the team to beat.

Dallas Bishop Dunne DB Chevin Calloway is down to Texas, Ole Miss, and Arkansas. I'm told it's really UT and the Hogs. Herman and Washington have made up some serious ground on the 4-star cornerback, but he's also got family ties to Fayetteville.

I expect him to visit Texas in January. With Thompson, Boyce, and Estell already in the mix, grabbing Calloway should wrap up DB recruiting for 2017. With the insane talent at defensive back in-state for 2018, don't fill up on bread. Leave a spot or two as you go after BJ Foster, Anthony Cook, Jalen Green, and the Green twins from Desoto (Joe and I will have a feature on the Green's later this week).

GOOD LUCK, CHUCK

Back in October, I traveled to watch Aledo’s senior offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga. Filiaga had moved from California to Texas during the previous offseason, so I was curious about the adjustments the 6-foot-6, 330-pound lineman had to make.

He told me something along the lines of “that Texas heat took some major getting used-to.” Luckily for Filiaga, his final high school game took place in the air conditioned comfort of AT&T Stadium. Filiaga’s Aledo team outlasted Corpus Christi Calallen and its wing-T offense 24-16 to win the 5A Division II state championship.

"My thoughts coming into this season was really preparing myself for their type of physicality and being mentally strong to play Aledo football,” Filiaga said after the game. “Now that we’re state champs, it’s all paid off with the great coaching staff that we have.”

Filiaga was on Texas’ radar as soon as he made it to the Lone Star State. He unofficially visited Texas before the season, was in Austin for the Notre Dame game and visited after the season to meet Tom Herman and his new staff.

He will release a top three this week ahead of his planned January 7th announcement at the Army bowl in San Antonio. He wouldn’t say whether Texas would make it or not, but he did speak highly of members of the new staff.

“They’re still there,” Filiaga said about Texas’ standing. “Everybody will find out where they placed at next week. Texas, I’m still keeping contact with Coach Warehime and Coach Herman.”

“They’re a great staff. They have a great set up for the new Longhorns,” Filiaga would add.

Filiaga only used four of his official visits and does not plan to take the fifth one after his decision. Though originally from California, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of indication that a California school is competing for his signature. Filiaga has kept a lot of details about his recruitment very, very quiet. I think that Texas is competing with TCU, Oklahoma and Michigan for a spot in his top three.

Carthage RB makes a name for himself on the biggest stage

For Carthage, the state finals are not an unfamiliar place. The Bulldogs have been to seven state championships, and all four of their previous titles have come in the past eight years.

The Bulldogs made it five titles in nine years as Carthage defeated Abilene Wylie to win the 4A Division I state championship on Friday night.

Carthage’s success came due to an unbelievable game by a Bulldog defense that forced six turnovers and the Bulldog running attack, led by junior Keaontay Ingram. He ran hard during the state finals going for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. He also caught three passes for 23 yards out of the backfield and from the slot, good enough to earn him the offensive MVP award of the state title game.

Before the game, Ingram had offers from TCU and SFA. Ingram’s performance caught the eye of the coaches in Columbia, as Missouri extended an offer on Sunday.

I caught up with Ingram yesterday and he said he thinks a Texas offer could be in the works soon. Right now, Warehime has been the one on him most.

Ingram’s name is on the rise. Justin reported yesterday that Ingram had an invite to The Opening’s Dallas regional camp, and I confirmed that with Ingram. He’ll be picking up some more offers soon and will keep bEAST Texas athletes in the spotlight.

ONE TO WATCH: 2020 Aledo RB Jase McClellan. The freshman receives plenty of carries for the 5A powerhouse, and delivered on the biggest stage. He was named the 5A DI title game offensive MVP, and while receiving the award, his teammates chanted “he’s a freshman.” His play in the title game caught the eye of SMU, who gave McClellan his first offer. Former Aledo and Texas RB Johnathan Gray has even said McClellan looked better than he did as a freshman. That’s high praise from high school football’s leading scorer.

Can someone answer this for me please? If you have a full scholarship from Texas or any school and decide that the school isn't for you and transfer are you as a player waiting for the next school to offer you a scholarship or are you having to take on the burden of debt like a normal student?

If you are offered a scholarship then you take it. If you are not offered a scholarship and you decide to continue your education then you pay for it like everyone else does.

A guy usually transfers out of a program by announcing he is transfering to...X...
Seems like there would have to be some collusion between the athlete and the new school for it to happen.I have yet tho hear a kid say..." I am transfering FROM school x and have no idea where I will go next"

I'm just wondering does said athlete usually get the same full ride? I don't honestly know how this works when it comes to deciding to transfer. When recruiting is over do these schools still have access to give scholarships? I'm just going to assume most wouldn't transfer if they didn't have the same "free education" .

I think it's regular for them to announce their transfer and start looking. I am guessing they finish up their semester and then enroll the for the next semester at their chosen school. Raulersen announced his intent to transfer and was here for a while finishing up his degree so he good play immediately under the grad transfer rules. His destination wasn't known immediately because he applied to several different grad programs. I believe UCLA was his first choice but didn't accept him.

One guy's guess on how our class shapes up at this point after Carter's commitment. This is a 20-person class.

QB - 2 S. Ehlinger and possibly one more
TE - 2 R.Leitao and 1 maybe C.Brewer
OL - 2 2 OTs out of G.Polley, D.Kerstetter (leaning our way) and M.Huhn (just decommited from UH)
RB - 2 T.Carter and E.Benjamin
WR - 2 D.Miller and O.Manning

DE - 3 out of T.Graham, L.Carson (probably not), K.Chaisson, B.Jones
DT - 1 no idea
ILB - 2 M.Bimage and M.Sanogo
DB - 4 K.Boyce, M.Estell, J.Thompson, C.Calloway

land all of these prospects and it ends up around a top 15 class per composite.

To be honest, I would prefer Eno, I don't know much about young, for all I know he might be the next D'Onta Foreman, but Eno is a leader. I think he would make a hell of a pickup even if he isn't a great player on the field, he would be a good person to have in the locker room. At this point taking both would be okay since our depth at RB is pretty low and I don't see too many great backs in Texas next year.

Eno was an alternate to Dobbins and Carter, Carter called and Eno is out. Young is a power back, get him in and be done.

Look for Eno to end up in the PAC, I'm not sure Eno has the upside that some do at the next level. Coaches sure seem to waiver on bringing him in and he seems to be viewed as an alternate on most big boards. He is an EE and will commit on the 7th before enrolling.

I personally think Eno is maxed out for size.

TEs. Hopefully we get 2 of these guys.

OrangeBloods saying TE Cade Brewer of Austin Lake Travis will be making his final decision between SMU and Texas by the end of the week.

Quotes from TE Reese Leitao of Tulsa, OK after de-committing from Nebraska (Rivals):

“I talked to them (Nebraska) and let them know I just wanted to make sure my options were open," Leitao said. "But, they are still a consideration of mine."

“My first official visit will be to LSU Jan. 13,” he said. “I am just going in to increase those relationships with the coaching staff, just check it out and learn a lot more. I want to go see what the tradition is all about because I know they have a really rich tradition. It’s a big school, a big campus and they seem to care about their football a lot.”

“TCU, I liked my visit there. My parents were also impressed with them as well,”
Leitao said. “It is at the defensive position, so it gave me a chance to look at things on the other side of the ball. I was impressed with speed on their defense and I could come in and showcase my athleticism off the edge, so I was intrigued by that.”

“I really liked the atmosphere when I was (at Texas),” Leitao said. “It was good to see Coach (Tom) Herman again and that whole staff that was at Houston. Everything checked out, I was very impressed and my parents were impressed.”

“Those teams really are my focus right now,” Leitao said. “Ole Miss I have been recruited by and a little bit by Auburn too, but I don’t know if I’ll be taking official visits there.”

The visit schedule for Chassion is as follows…

LSU: January 13th-15th

Oregon: January 17th-19th

Texas: January 20th-22nd

Colorado: January 23rd-25th

USC: January 27th-29th

My question, is it cool for these players to just miss 2 weeks of school for OVs? I feel like hosting players during the school week sets a bad precedence, basically saying that school doesn't matter.

Sheffield to Texas would be very odd... didn't even know we were really in on him. Then again, this is all coming from Hammroid

Heard Kendall Sheffield to Texas, per Hamm.
Aggie faithful seem to be of the opinion that dad doesn't like the position coach. I don't know why Sheffield went JUCO and assume it had to do with academics because he played for Blinn, correct? How do the Ags miss out on a player in their own hood?
