Recruiting Thread 2017

So with all of the new additions and commitments for this year, where does that leave us? How many more are we expecting to sign/commit for this year? Any big "need" areas that are still out there with recruits that we have a realistic shot with?

20-21 projected in this class. Losing Carson leaves us with 11 commits so ~10 more. Maybe something like this remaing targets:

QB - probably done, maybe a grad transfer
RB - done
WR - 1-2 more: Omar Manning, ?
TE - 1 more: Reese Leitao or Chase Rogers
OL - 2 more: Grant Polley, Matthew Huhn?
DE - 2 more (3 more if Graham flips to ou): K'Lavon Chaisson, Bryan Jones, Ryan Johnson, Dayo Odeyingbo
DT - 1 Corey Bethley?
LB - 1 or 2 - Marqez Bimage, Mohamed Sanogo?
DB - 1 more - Kendall Sheffield or Kary Vincent

So did they know it was a academic issue and part ways ? will he not qualify for atm ?

According to 247Sports.com, Carson’s relationship with the Longhorns has ended. He has decommitted from the school as the two sides went in a “different direction.” The report notes that there were multiple things off the field that contributed to this. The Crystal Ball Prediction for this defensive end prospect is now at 100 percent for Texas A&M.

Prudence Mackintosh said"never disparage an institution of higher learning", because your child might end up there. So, we have our and ATM.

Eric Nahlin is now predicting Juco transfer, former 5-star CB Kendall Sheffield to Texas. For those who don't read Inside Texas, Nahlin has known Sheffield's father for a while now.

24/7 reporting CB Chevin Calloway will now give Texas his final official visit on January 27th. He'll visit Arkansas the week before and they should be UT's primary competition.

Brainiacs Open Post 12/28-29:

Reese Leitao: Just a quick note on Texas TE target, Reese Leitao. After the commitment of TE, Cade Brewer I asked Leitao if that committment would affect things with him and Texas. Leitao said, no Texas is still very much in the picture. – (Super K)

Some Official Visits Set: We’ve reported on some recruits who have set there Texas official visits, and here’s a list.

January 14th: DB Kobe Boyce, DB Chevin Calloway

January 20th: S/ATH Montrell Estell, WR Damion Miller, DE K’Lavon Chassion, DE/LB Marqez Bimage, DE Taquon Graham

January 26th: DE Ryan Johnson

January 28th: DE Bryan Jones, (Chevin Calloway may move his visit back to this date per reports from the UA Game)

These are just a few of the guys right now and these plans can always change so we’ll keep you all up to date.

My Take On Texas’ Newest Commits: Texas has landed 3 commits in the last week in TE Cade Brewer, RB Daniel Young, and OL Derek Kerstetter. Here are my takes on the three…

Cade Brewer: While still thin, which is why I’m not sold on him yet as a blocker until he bulks up Brewer is the best pass catcher out of Texas’ 3 remaining TE targets (Brewer, Leitao and Rogers). I do like that Brewer has experience blocking at the end of the line and in an H-Back role. A guy like Sal Cannella was never even used like that in JUCO so he had no blocking experience. The moment he steps on campus, Brewer will be Texas’ top option as far as a receiving TE. So if Herman wants to use the TE in the passing game Brewer could very well see the field as a true freshman.

Daniel Young: This was the interesting take in a lot of people’s minds as RB Eno Benjamin is set to commit on January 7th and Texas was the likely destination. Instead Texas is now full at the position after landing Houston-area RBs Toneil Carter and Daniel Young. Daniel Young is a more power-style runner than Carter and Benjamin, doesn’t have great speed but can be a bruiser which will fit what Herman wants to do with his power zone running scheme. One thing I’ve found interesting in talking to some about the Benjamin vs Young debate is that Eno Benjamin is thought to be one of the more overworked RBs coming out of the state of Texas in a while. He took a lot of hits this year and isn’t the biggest guy. Texas would’ve taken him regardless if Young didn’t commit but I thought that was interesting in talking to people after Young committed. I have also heard there are some in the Texas camp that believe Eno may have been a little overdeveloped. In other words, there wasn’t as much upside there.

Derek Kerstetter: SA Reagan (TX) OL Derek Kerstetter flipped from Oklahoma State to Texas on Monday and is a product of having made a lot of improvement from JR to SR year. His improvement minded me of RS FR OL JP Urquidez in that regard. Kerstetter is a guy who is likely headed for a RS year, but I wouldn’t say he’s a “depth take” only. AT 6’5 and around 300 pounds, he just needs to continue to mold his body in the right direction. While he played OT in HS, I could very well see him sliding inside in college. – (Andrew)

Trestan Ebner: Henderson (TX) ATH Trestan Ebner recently decommitted from TCU after being committed to the Horned Frogs for more than 6 months. I recently spoke with Ebner and he told me that he has been in contact with Texas WR coach Drew Mehringer, and that he plans to officially visit Texas on the weekend of January 20th. He told me he has a top 5 of Baylor, Texas, TCU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M.

I was told the main reason Ebner decomitted from TCU was that the staff wanted him to play DB in college, not WR which he seems to prefer. I was told that Ole Miss also likes him at DB, so I wouldn’t expect him to land there if that’s the case.

Baylor seems to be in a good spot for him. He doesn’t have a Texas offer even though they like him at WR, and TAMU doesn’t have any more room for another WR in their class. Baylor has no wide receivers committed in their 2017 class so Ebner could be the guy at that position. If Texas doesn’t offer Baylor is the likely destination for Ebner. – (Andrew)

TE Recruiting: Texas has one of the two TE spots filled by Lake Travis (TX) TE Cade Brewer. The top two candidates to fill the second spot are Reese Leitao and Chase Rogers. Here’s where we are right now, Leitao is the top target as he has a Texas offer and Rogers doesn’t. Leitao took his Texas OV right before the dead period and it looks like he may take one to LSU after the dead period. Rogers doesn’t have an offer, but I feel very good about him being in the class if he gets an offer before the final TE spot fills up. Rogers plans to visit Texas on the weekend of January 14th.

Jordan Pouncey: Winter Park (FL) WR Jordan Pouncey decommitted from Notre Dame yesterday and Texas offered just over a week ago. Right now it sounds like Texas will receive an official visit from Pouncey, but it also looks like the in-state Miami Hurricanes are the early leader to land Pouncey. – (Andrew)

Charleston Rambo: I have been told that Texas is working very hard to get OU WR commit, Charleston Rambo to visit Texas after the dead period. Some on the Texas side tell me they are optimistic he will make it in at some point. Again, something to watch. – (Andrew)

I love seeing our school get new recruits but i just don't want us to settle on anyone just to fill a spot. I would love to see some 5 stars or 4 star kids signing.

First you have to move on from being dog crap for 7 years.

As a fan base you'd think we'd know by now that having a scheming and recruiting guys that fit scheme goes a long way.

Herman has gotten verbals from 5 guys, so far, during the dead period.
2 RBs
2 TEs- very much a need for his offense
1 OL- Late bloomer that had a great senior year

One of those RBs is a burner too. We don't have anything like him on our roster currently.

If we are going to be an elite program, we have to sign elite players, but I agree we have to move on from being dog crap first.

This class isn't going to be filled with 5'star difference makers, it's a class that will have some solid players and guys that will likely fall away over time. This is a transition class just like 2014. 2014 had some solid players and one great player. Let's hope this class has the same.

The key is how this class fits in with 2016 class and the 2018 class. No class is an island they have to mesh with other classes to improve the teams. What we need from this class is a few leaders that will own the team when they are seniors like Ehlinger and Graham.

I will be the first to tell anyone that I am so disappointed we aren't going to get all that elite talent in Texas, but nothing we can do about it now, so let's just hope we have the right guy and he can put us in place to get that talent moving forward.

SOW- your last paragraph is exactly what I'm talking about. I feel we should have at least hit on one of the top kids in TX. If we don't see improvement on the field, recruiting will only get tougher. I'm just hoping that this class turns out great. Offensively, we look great with the QB, RB, WR, TE pickups. Defensively, we need better production from the DB'same, so the JUCO would be a major pickup.

I still wish we could have found a transfer QB. Allen made the most sense but guess he got PO'd. Surprised Stidhem went to Auburn as he doesn't really fit their offensive philosophy

It's still early in the transfer process... guys will be transferring all the way up until damn near the start of the year. Herman may want to get a look at what he has in spring ball with Shane first

And it's now official. Bummer.

Wells-The 6-foot-5, 270-pound DL from ETX Lagarynn Carson told me he's no longer committed to Texas.

He's talking to Blinn JC and Cisco JC right now about securing a spot. The writing has been on the wall for months now so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

He's in alternative school at the moment. Wish this kid the best.
247 sports has him at 100% aggie. But if he has behaviour issues, then lets just let the "Swag copter" have him

Their crystal ball is only 2 picks, and they are both from May 2015. I wouldnt put too much stock into that. He is going JUCO

k'lavon chaisson is a better player than I realized

LSU still scares me in this situation due to Marvin Wilson recruiting him for the Tigers.. he seems like a strong lean in our direction but..

Do you have info on Marvin Wilson?...I knew he was an LSU lean, but I never knew he was activly recruiting for them....everything I see has Wilson as undecided. I am not fussing here, I just want to know.I realize he is a very long shot for us, but until I see a commitment I can still hope.

I'll see if I can locate the article.. it was a few weeks back.

Wilson was not openly recruiting just any player for LSU - only recruiting Chaisson . Chaisson seemed to have taken it with a grain of salt.. saying he and Wilson are friends and talked about playing together.

LSU is dangerous enough without other outside positive factors.

we really really need Chaisson, key missing cog in our defense.

Brainiacs say we're on commit watch for a D player today maybe.

Commit Watch?: We are told that Texas is on commit watch. We checked with the recruit, who we can say is a prospect on the defensive side of the ball. He would not confirm one way or another whether or not he would announce today. He simply said, “we will have to see”.

Whether said recruit announces today or not, we feel confident he will end up at Texas regardless at some point. – (Andrew)

Kenny Guiton: Last week Tom Herman made another hire to his support staff in former Ohio State QB from Houston in Kenny Guiton. It looks like Guiton will be joining as an offensive quality control coach, which is someone who helps the team prepare for their future opponents. Guiton was previously an offensive graduate assistant at Houston under Herman. As we’ve said since Herman was hired, he wants a large support staff around him similar to what you find at Alabama with Nick Saban and Ohio State with Urban Meyer. – (Andrew)

Tim Beck: We know reports are beginning to surface that Tim Beck will be hired as the new Texas co-OC/QB coach. We have not been able to confirm the reports just yet. The Texas staff is scheduled to meet later today for the first time since they broke for the holiday. Hopefully we will know more after that. – (Super K)

Kam Curl: I spoke with the father of 2017 DB, Kam Curl (Muskogee, OK) this morning and it sounds like the recent Texas offer is going to finalize his visit schedule tonight. Curl’s father tells me that as of right now it’s looking like they will visit Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas with a tentative Texas visit date of around January 20th.

Again, that visit schedule should get finalized sometime in the next day. As of right now, TCU is considered the favorite in Kam’s recruitment. – (Super K)

Bimage maybe?

Anything to back this up? All insiders seem to be thinking we are in the lead but of course LSU will be a threat.
Late push and Ed O can do the couch talk much like Strong. I heard he was all in with Texas more than a month ago (like all but announced to the public). LSU is a real threat.

24/7 purports to have recruit reactions from the Tim Beck hiring:

Texas found its offensive coordinator on Tuesday as the Longhorns hired Ohio State’s Tim Beck.

A former Texas high school coach, Beck has strong recruiting ties to the Lone Star State and should give the Longhorns a boost.

Here are what some of the nation’s top recruits had to say about Beck.

QB Tate Martell, Bishop Gorman (NV)

“I love Tim Beck. He’s one of the reasons I committed to Ohio State. He’s a great dude. I wish him the best in everything he does. Sam (Ehlinger) is lucky to get a great guy and a great coach. With Coach (Tom) Herman and that offense, I think Sam is going to play early if not as a freshman. He has such a good skillset for that offense. He’s a bigger sized kid. He’s going to be able to take a beating in the run game, and he has a great arm.”

RB J.K. Dobbins, La Grange

“I feel like he is a really cool coach.”

WR Omar Manning, Lancaster

“Coach Beck showed me a lot of love when he was recruiting me at Ohio State. I still keep up with him. He showed a lot of interest and came up to my school a lot. He came like four times to talk to me. He’s a really cool guy. I like him a lot.”

OLB Baron Browning, Kennedale

“He’s a good recruiter. He’s a really good man. He was my area recruiter, and I have nothing but respect for him as a man. He was a coach in the DFW not too long ago. I like him overall. You can crack jokes with him. He’s a good guy.”

CB Jeffrey Okudah, South Grand Prairie

“He’s a great recruiter. He recruited me really hard and did a great job building a relationship with me. I think he’s going to pull in a lot of big-time guys.”

JH Chat stuff:

Q: Does Texas ink Taquon Graham?

JH: From what most say Texas should be the favorite but an OV to OU will be very serious and concerning if he makes

///

Q: What players should Texas expect to commit January to Texas? Do you feel this staff has a game plan as soon as the dead period is over?

JH: I think you will see Texas get to 20 -- so this will be a very busy month my friend indeed. Chaisson, Manning, Vincent, Cosmi, Calloway, Bimage, Rambo are just a few kids who will make final decisions as we press on to NSD....You will also see a couple new names pop up moving forward such as a Pouncey or Chris Miller type of player...

///

Q: Out of all the wr offeres out there, besides manning which ones do you feel Texas has best shot at inking?

JH: I am going with Rambo...I like him over Manning as a player

///

Q: Outside of QB, what will be the strength of the 2017 recruiting class?

JH: Well quality over quantity overall I am going Young & Carter at RB
