Recruiting Thread 2017

The Sunday Pulpit: Tom Herman should pursue a graduate transfer quarterback

Texas football coach Tom Herman can learn an important lesson from Charlie Strong.

When Strong arrived in Austin, he inherited quarterbacks David Ash, Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard, an incoming freshman. Ash had two starts in 2013 before sustaining a concussion against BYU. He returned two weeks later, left with a head injury against Kansas State, and wasn’t cleared to play throughout most of the 2014 preseason. Ash proceeded to sustain another concussion (cute word for brain injury) in the season opener, and never played football again. Swoopes played so poorly during the spring game of Strong’s first year, the coach considered moving him to tight end. That move never occurred, but Swoopes was incredibly inconsistent throughout his first season as a starter. Meanwhile, Heard was a freshman and not in the mix for playing time.

If the previous staff pursued a graduate transfer, somebody who could give the coaches above-average production while their young quarterbacks could sit back and learn, there is a chance Strong’s tenure could have gone differently. A veteran quarterback could have been the difference between six wins and possibly eight in 2014. At the very least, an experienced quarterback would have compiled more than 57 passing yards against Arkansas in that embarrassing Texas Bowl loss. The lack of consistent quarterback production was a huge detriment in Strong’s first year, and some might argue it was never adequately addressed through his tenure.

That is why it is so important for Herman to obtain a graduate transfer quarterback this year.

Sure, graduate transfers sometimes provide teams and fan bases with a false sense of hope. Former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson emerged into a star as a graduate transfer. Meanwhile, some quarterbacks searching for playing time at other programs eventually held clipboards - again - in a different uniform. For the most part, if a quarterback is not playing, coaches usually have a good reason. If a school is stacked at the quarterback position, then it makes sense to leave, and that is how other programs benefit from a graduate transfer.

When Herman looks at his current roster, he should be apprehensive. Not only should Herman be concerned about having only three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster this season, he should be nervous about each passer. If anybody believes Herman has inherited a quarterback room without any question marks, they are not taking an objective look at that position.

Let us start with Shane Buechele.

Last season, Buechele finished with 2,958 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a true freshman. According to UT, Buechele is the first Texas quarterback since Colt McCoy in 2009 to have at least 2,500 passing yards and 20 touchdowns in a season, the first player since Bobby Layne in 1944 to start his first career game as a true freshman at quarterback for Texas (only player in school history to start each of his first two games), and is tied for second-fastest to reach 2,000 passing yards in a season in UT history. We also know Buechele is a gym rat. Buechele's work ethic is the main reason why he started last season.

Nevertheless, former offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert did a great job of protecting Buechele this season. Gilbert did not ask Buechele to read the entire field, but they worked sidelines in the passing game. Buechele threw five interceptions in the last three games. In addition, Buechele’s small frame took a lot of hard hits down the stretch. There is no telling if Buechele can physically hold up during the 2017 season, or what kind of quarterback he could be if asked to do more in Herman’s offense.

Nobody really knows what Matthew Merrick brings to the table. When Merrick was initially signed, he was supposed to be a gray-shirt, and no one in the building expected him to receive playing time. Merrick continued to grind and played well enough to surpass Kai Locksley last year, while allowing Heard to switch positions. Considering Herman probably evaluated Merrick when he coached at Houston, it might be hard for him to factor into the quarterback competition this year.

The majority of people who follow recruiting believe incoming freshman Sam Ehlinger is the real deal. Ehlinger, a former Westlake standout, finished with 7,375 passing yards, 89 passing touchdowns and 126 total touchdowns during his tenure. As a junior in 2015, Ehlinger led Westlake to the 6A D2 State Championship game, losing to Galena Park North Shore.

However, Ehlinger has been plagued with injuries as a high school quarterback. Ehlinger reportedly broke his wrist, had surgery for a torn meniscus, and broke his thumb. Ehlinger may have a lot of talent, but his injury history should concern Herman and his staff.

Considering Herman is not expected to sign another incoming freshman quarterback, a graduate transfer is the best way to solidify that room.

Right now, there is not a lot of buzz surrounding graduate transfers. The market will heat up in April, and that is when Herman should answer every call he receives.

Here are a few quarterbacks worth considering:

- Houston quarterback Kyle Allen is the obvious graduate transfer candidate. Alex Dunlap previously reported Allen could follow Herman to Texas. Allen threw for 3,532 yards and 33 touchdowns over two seasons with Texas A&M from 2014-15 before transferring to Houston. Herman knows Allen better than any other transfer candidate.

UH QB Kyle Allen on pace for graduate transfer, HS coaching source says. Many are already assuming he follows Herman. Will have 2 years left

- Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire is the most popular name on the market right now. According to several published reports, Zaire will delay his commitment decision until mid-April, with Wisconsin and North Carolina as the front-runners. Zaire has played in 17 college games, completing 59.2 percent of his passes for 816 yards and six touchdowns with zero interceptions (a passer efficiency ranking of 149.3).

- Michigan quarterback Shane Morris is another option. Morris, a backup this season, announced he would transfer a few days ago. Morris is a very good athlete, but it is fair to question his arm. A one-time five-star quarterback prospect, Morris was one of the first players to commit to former Michigan coach Brady Hoke - making his pledge as a high school sophomore in 2011. For his career, Morris has gone 47 of 92 for 434 yards and five interceptions. He has rushed 18 times for 87 yards.

If Herman is unable to obtain a graduate transfer, it makes sense for him to kick the tires on Jerrod Heard and see if he can be a viable option. However, I still believe Heard is better utilized as a receiver than at quarterback.

Herman has done everything the right way since being hired. He has confidence, a plan, a great coaching and support staff, and could emerge into a fantastic coach at Texas. If there was a blueprint for what a successful young coach might look like, Herman would check every box. Heck, if Herman is satisfied with Buechele, Ehlinger and Merrick, we will have to trust his judgment.

However, Longhorn observers recently witnessed what happens if you are too complacent with the quarterback position. Herman should do his best to avoid the same oversight.

Sports On A Dime

1. We keep saying Herman “gets it," but one sentiment he expressed about Stan Drayton on Thursday sealed the deal for me. Herman said his goal is to develop Drayton into a head coach, which is why the running backs coach is also the associate head coach. According to The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, known as TIDES, there were 15 black head coaches in the Football Subdivision (four in Texas), which is viewed as the elite tier of college athletics, in 2016. Herman’s commitment to diversity resonated with me. I believe Herman's "realness" will have the same positive impression with the team's African-American players, and recruits, too.

2. The best thing about Herman’s completion of his staff is players finally have a chance to develop relationships with their position coaches. It is pretty clear Herman has an old school mentality and will challenge his players, but that allows position coaches to play the role of “good cop” and keep the necessary team unity.

3. The dead period is Monday through Thursday, and I expect Herman’s staff to hit the homes of recruits like spider monkeys later this week. Obviously, they are playing from behind and have an uphill battle, but if a few more players like Toneil Carter fall into their lap, Herman’s staff can feel good about its effort, and build toward next year.

First of two recruiting weekends this weekend (the big one is on the 20th). So far this weekend:

EE RB Toneil Carter moves in (excellent)
CB Chevin Calloway visiting with his buddy Carter (would be a great flip from Ark)
SDE Taquon Graham making his official (must hang onto this guy from the land thieves)

In other news:

EJ says Texas is gaining steam again for WR Omar Manning. Still expects a flip from TCU.

DT Austin Faoliu's dad played under Gary Patterson. TCU could flip him from Arizona.

From Eyes Of Texas, EJ said if we offer and flip Denton WR Chris Miller from Colorado then Denton OT Grant Polley becomes easier to flip too.

Here's a nice thought and optimistic look at the finish to the '17 class. It's entirely feasible that we'll end up with a top 20 class in this transition year which is pretty damn good considering it's also a smallish class.

Another poster on Shaggy (UTLawnghorn) played around with the class calculator and added these guys to the class:

OT G.Polley
WR O.Manning
WR T.Ebner
DE K.Chaisson
DE B.Jones
LB G.Johnson
CB C.Calloway

This class put us at 244.39, which would've been good for 17th last year. Fun note: that class would have 20 commits and be 17th. Last year, A&M was at 238.94 and OU was at 238.02 both with 21 commits in their class.

TFB 2017 Class Breakdown (1/10/2017)

2017 Class Breakdown: Clemson knocks off Alabama to win the National Championship and the college football season comes to an end. That means every program in to country will turn all their focus to the recruiting trail. With about 3 weeks until National Signing Day on February 1st, Texas is currently sitting at 13 commitments. I still expect them to sign anywhere between 18-22 recruits for the 2017 class. I’ll break down how many recruits you should expect to see sign at each position so you all know what to look out for down the final stretch to NSD.

Quarterback: (1). Commitments: Sam Ehlinger

Texas has their QB signed, sealed, and, will be delivered to Texas for good this weekend as he’ll be moving in and ready to get going this winter/spring with the team. Now I will say I’m not ruling out an additon of a grad transfer QB at all, but if that happens it won’t be until well after signing day.

Running Back: (2). Commitments: Toniel Carter and Daniel Young

Texas is also done recruiting at the RB position for 2017. Carter is taking his official visit to Texas this weekend and will be in Austin to stay as he’s enrolling early. He has a great combo of speed and ability to run between the tackles for some power. Young is more of a power back who was flipped from Houston and is exactly what Herman and Co are looking for with their power-zone rushing scheme.

Wide Receiver: (2). Commitments: Damion Miller

Right now Texas is still looking to add another 2017 WR to go along with Miller. The two biggest names are TCU WR commit Omar Manning and OU commit Charleston Rambo. Some other names to keep an eye on are Colorado commit Chris Miller from Denton HS and Henderson (TX) WR Trestan Ebner.

Tight End: (2). Commitments: Reese Leitao and Cade Brewer

Tight end is another position Texas is done recruiting in the 2017 class. As Tom Herman made it a huge priority to find some pass catching TE’s for the 2017 class, as it wasn’t much of a priority for Charlie Strong/Sterlin Gilbert.

Offensive Line: (2-3). Commitments: Derek Kerstetter

This will be an interesting position to watch down the stretch for me. Right now Kerstetter is the only commitment is he will most likely play guard at the next level. Missing out on Walker Little still hurts Texas but Charlie Strong stocking up on the OL and DL make 2017 a year where Texas doesn’t have to stock up on 4+ OL. Colorado OT commit Grant Polley is a guy Texas is pushing for very hard right now, as he moves very well but still needs to add some weight. I think Herman would like to take 3 OL in 2017 and Houston OL commit Sam Cosmi could be a possible late offer. There wasn’t going to be much contribution from 2017 OL signees during Texas’ 2017 season outside of Walker Little (if they landed him), and I still feel that way today.

Defensive End: (2). Commitments: Taquon Graham

It’s pretty simple at DE for Texas, hold onto Graham. The only other name at DE is Madison Prep (LA) DE Bryan Jones who will visit Houston, Texas, and Texas A&M before NSD.

Defensive Tackle: (0-1). Commitments: None

This is the lowest position of need for Texas in 2017, mostly due to the fact Charlie Strong took 5 DT’s in the 2016 class. It seemed his plan was to go all-in on 5-star Marvin Wilson, and if they missed on him they’d take 0 DT’s in 2017 and that’s a perfectly fine plan. Texas recently offered California DT Austin Faliou, so we will see if he visits. Another option who could be in line for an offer is Joshua Rogers from the Houston area, though he seems to be down to Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

– Line Backer: (2-3). Committed: Marqez Bimage

Texas already has Bimage in the fold. The two other primary targets are OLB/DE K’Lavon Chaisson JUCO LB Gary Johnson. Both guys are high priority targets. They could always offer a guy like Mohamed Sanogo but I don’t think he can play at Texas, and if the new staff really wanted him he’d have an offer right now.

– Defensive Back: (4-5). Committed: Josh Thompson, Kobe Boyce, Montrell Estell

The DB position will be an interesting one to watch as that is the position with the most top targets still available. CB Chevin Calloway, Kam Curl, and Kary Vincent all say they’ll visit Texas. Then the wildcard of Kendall Sheffield. If Texas can land one of those guys in addition to the 3 they already have, that’ll be a really solid haul.

Note: TE Chase Rogers no longer visiting Texas and CB Kendall Sheffield just commited to tOSU.

Visits:

Nahlin- let's do a status check on some remaining targets with upcoming visits.

January 13

RB Daniel Young, Spring Westfield (Houston, TX) - TEXAS: Young will make his first visit to Texas that I'm aware of. Solid interior running candidate. Solid commit.

OL Derek Kerstetter, Reagan (San Antonio, TX) - TEXAS: Kerstetter flipped from Oklahoma State despite having not visited the new staff at Texas. I'm expecting him at center or guard.

DE Taquon Graham, Temple (Temple, TX) - TEXAS: Texas wants Graham in this weekend to attempt to close his recruitment down once and for all. In my opinion that's the wrong approach. Tell him to take his visits and then come see the staff on the 27th and lock it down. Regardless, I still feel really good about Texas getting the signature. Graham will visit OU on the 20th.

DE Marqez Bimage, Brenham (Brenham, TX) - TEXAS: Solid commit. Baylor made a credible threat but Bimage accounted for everything involved in the decision and comes from a "Texas" family.

CB Kobe Boyce, Lake Dallas (Lake Dallas, TX) - TEXAS: Solid commit. Let him work on Chevin Calloway.

CB Chevin Calloway, Bishop Dunne (Dallas, TX): I have Calloway as an Arkansas lean and he'll visit the Razorbacks the following weekend. That's not ideal, at least as I'm still conditioned to how Strong closed. He loved having the final say. This one likely comes down to in-homes. Let's see what Herman and Washington can do.

January 19 (mid-week visit)

DE Ryan Johnson, St. Paul’s Episcopal (Mobile, AL): I posted a couple weeks ago I've heard this one is currently down to Auburn and Texas, with UT having hope because Auburn is up against the numbers. I get the feeling that Auburn will find a way to make him fit, but there is at least a ray of hope. He'll see Auburn immediately after his Texas visit. I don't think Alabama will have the room but you can't rule that out entirely -- because Saban.

January 20

WR Trestan Ebner, Henderson (Henderson, TX) - BAYLOR: If offered, he's likely in the calculator. The staff desperately wants a dynamic slot receiver. Most like him at safety but interestingly the last staff -- which put a premium on explosiveness -- liked him at receiver as well. Ebner recently flipped from TCU to Baylor because of his preference for offense.

WR Damion Miller, John Tyler (Tyler, TX) - TEXAS: Solid commit.

DE K’Lavon Chaisson, Galena Park North Shore (Houston, TX): The dynamic lineman will visit LSU this weekend and then Texas, so the order is at least in UT's favor. I'm holding to my Texas prediction and am not overly concerned, at least yet.
LB Gary Johnson, Dodge City C.C. (Dodge City, KS): Fans are excited about some predictions that have come in for Johnson that are in UT's favor but I'm not sure how a prediction can be made with him yet to visit Oregon and Taggart/Leavitt, Texas, and USC (in that order). There is cause for hope for UT because of the chance to come in and secure a starting spot early, though hindering that somewhat is Johnson wouldn't be able to arrive until late May/early June. Certainly this is one to watch, and though Todd Orlando isn't known as a great recruiter, there is no better salesman for his defense.

CB Amik Robertson, Thibodaux (Thibodaux, LA) - LOUISIANA TECH: Robertson is being set up as an emergency, last second offer. It's wise to get him to visit after the Calloway visit since they should have an idea of where they stand on that front. I'd probably have him come in on the 27th.

DB Josh Thompson, Nacogdoches (Nacogdoches, TX): Solid commit. Love his upside. Should be a composite four-star.

DB Montrell Estell, Hooks (Hooks, TX): Solid commit. Love his upside. Is barely a composite four-star, should be higher.

ATH Jordan Pouncey, Winter Park (Winter Park, FL) - MIAMI: He'd be a WR at Texas. His visit schedule is Miami, UT, and UT-lite. Formerly committed to Notre Dame, I now have the Canes in the driver seat with Texas in second place. Still, there's some intrigue here.

January 27

DE Bryan Jones, Madison Prep Academy (Baton Rouge, LA): He'll visit Houston, A&M, and Texas. I don't think Texas has pushed hard for him since the Austin arrival, but I think UT can pull him with the late, full-court press. Same high school as Malcolm Roach.

No Date Set/Potential Visits

WR Jamire Calvin, Cathedral (Los Angeles, CA) - OREGON STATE: He has one official visit remaining and might use it despite his recent commitment. Explosive.

WR CeeDee Lamb, Foster (Richmond, TX) - OKLAHOMA: Best receiver in the state. I don't think UT will get a serious look but you never know what Lamb will do in his recruitment.

WR Charleston Rambo, Cedar Hill (Cedar Hill, TX) - OKLAHOMA: I just don't feel the relationships are built here for the flip. Too bad, would love to land him.

WR/ATH Chris Miller, Denton High (Denton, TX) - COLORADO: Would have visited on the 20th had it not gotten out publicly. Now the task is to get him to reschedule and keep it quiet. Really good player -- better than Ebner at the position.

TE Cade Brewer, Lake Travis (Austin, TX) - TEXAS: We simply just need to find out when he'll visit.

OL Grant Polley, Denton High (Denton, TX) - COLORADO: I think he's going to visit on the 20th but I'm not entirely sure. Staff might need to use an in-home to get him to visit.

DT Austin Faoliu, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) - ARIZONA: Was offered last week and is seeing himself benefit from the annual late market that emerges for big bodies. He'll visit OU this weekend. OU offered the same day as Texas and has a much richer tradition with Californians. I think a visit is likely but I don't think a flip is at this point but I don't know him well.

DT Josh Rogers, Houston Christian (Houston, TX): Great size and athleticism, he just plays terrible competition and is extremely raw. He'd be an Aggie if they had room for him and that still may happen. I could see Texas making some real noise here but here's the rub -- his visit schedule is UofH, A&M, and Ole Miss. He used one in December to OU. Texas would need a midweek visit or to get him to alter his schedule.

CB Kary Vincent, Memorial (Port Arthur, TX) - LSU: The staff will have to work hard just to secure the visit. That tells you how unlikely a flip is.

ATH Kamren Curl, Muskogee (Muskogee, OK): He'll visit OU this weekend and Arkansas the 27th so the opening would be the 20th. First of all it will be tough to land him, but if the staff did they could potentially play Estell at WR. No idea if that's the thinking. Still, I don't see Texas landing him.

"Texas coach Tom Herman said he's not a fan of the proposed early signing periods and would rather prefer prospects being able to sign national letter of intents when they are ready, much like it was before the modern era of recruiting."

I'd like to see LOI day moved back a month so all these coaches can finish the year with their team instead of having to move in December for recruiting purposes.

That seems like an odd move. Wasn't his name mentioned when UT was searching last year? Seems odd.

Cumbie got most of the buzz in our OC search, but I agree this is out of left field. I must have missed something but why the lateral move to a way lesser program?

My thoughts exactly. He could have taken the Auburn job or something like that. But this is the same day that the OC from Auburn left to take the OC job at UConn (yes football OC, not women's basketball)

Agree,he could have gone other places.TCU offense took a downturn this year and maybe he got the blame and I might add he was co-offensive coach at TCU along with cumbie and maybe he wanted to run the whole Offense himself.

Reagor said losing Meacham would open things up then tweeted that he would sign with TCU last night, but he left the door wide open with his statement. "As of now, I had to say I'm 100% committed to TCU". These kids are a trip.

Hopefully they can flip Omar.

Texas hosted 2017 Colorado OT commit, Grant Polley (Denton, TX) this past weekend. I caught up with Grant’s mother who offered some interesting thoughts about the trip.

“It was a great trip. They’re (Texas staff) going to turn things around. I have no doubt they will be successful in quick order.” One of the complaints of other visitors in the past was that the Texas visits were often not particularly organized. According to Grant’s mother that couldn’t be further from the truth under the current staff, “It was so organized. We were taken good care of. Even the GAs would open the door and clap as the players walked through the door, I guess to simulate walking through the tunnel. He (coach Herman) has the right staff there and they are working hard to get to know the players. They will be successful”.

Polley’s mom added that the visit went so smoothly that, “I couldn’t tell they were a new staff”. Grant’s mother also liked the fact that the Texas’ staff went out of their way to show the diversity of the staff. This is certainly an area where Texas has an advantage over Colorado. “It was a great 48 hours. It was a little bit of everything to having dinner at the touchdown club to meeting with the nutritionist and the academic advisers”.

Going forward, the Polley’s said that while Oregon’s new offensive line coach, Mario Cristobal is recruiting Grant, they will likely shut things down and narrow their focus solely on making a decision between Texas and Colorado. “Texas and Colorado are doing in-home visits this week. We are going to take this week to think things through and weigh the options and then Grant will make a final decision.”

[TFB]

Organized!....That is a comment I have seen about several areas since Herman took over. I really liked Strong, but I think his lack of ability to organize was his downfall.

Kinda quiet following the visits this weekend?
Here's what I've read/heard or seen on twitter:

-Polley solidified to CU
-Manning solidified to TCU
*They could still considered flip but it would be closer to NSD to avoid drama and spotlight. IMO I think they both stick, but I feel more confidant about Polley flipping than Manning.

-Graham's visit went great, more solid to Texas but OU still a threat
-Johnsons visit went great, but will still see USC (Commit watch)
-Calloway visit went great, but will still visit AR

-Offer out to JUCO DT Murchison (Commit watch)
-Offer out to OL Zabie (Commit watch)

All other visitors were already committed to UT and solid with their commits. Their visits went great.

From HS-
Polley talked with a member of the staff here (Harrison) last night and confirmed that he is shutting it down and sticking with Colorado. Also clarified that he will not be hosting an in-home visit with the Texas staff.

I just looked at the updated Austin Statesman Fab 55. Three of their top 5 are going to tOSU. I mean every once in a while they sign a TX player I think JT Barrett is from Wichita Falls. But never anything like this.

Wth is going on here?

Urban Meyer is the coach, the consistently play for conference and national championships, they consistently put a ton of players in the NFL, tOSU is one of the premier college programs in the country and a true blue blood. Meyer has recruiting ties in the south that the previous regime didn't have. This trend isn't going to stop unless UT & aTm finally start winning meaningful games.

So what you're saying is that it's all up to UT. I'm good with that.
Well yes, because I think Texas will be a member of an athletic conference headlined by Notre Dame before A&M wins a meaningful game (i.e. conference championship and more)

Coach...I have read this on here and Hornsports, but I cant look it up anywhere. I go on 24/7 and they still have the old rankings. Where are you seeing this.

We will continue to see that until we start winning. I think we were getting top players but sad to say with Strong gone, kids are more looking OOS. I think Herman can be a great coach but recruiting is not looking great for him right now. Ed Oliver is the only top kid he has gotten since being a head coach. Recruiting is the thing that will save his job and I still say getting guys with only one or two offers will not cut it here at UT.
