Recruiting Thread 2017

We will continue to see that until we start winning. I think we were getting top players but sad to say with Strong gone, kids are more looking OOS. I think Herman can be a great coach but recruiting is not looking great for him right now. Ed Oliver is the only top kid he has gotten since being a head coach. Recruiting is the thing that will save his job and I still say getting guys with only one or two offers will not cut it here at UT.

Strong didn't land any top recruits when he first got here. His first full class was when we started landing the big ones.

And Herman was at Houston. Ed Oliver was the first 5 star play to sign with a non power 5 school. It's not like Herman was supposed to be doing better.

If I'm not mistaken, Heard was a highly recruited kid 4*, Freeman was a 4*, Ar Foreman was a 4*, Poona Ford was a 4*. He landed a few 4 stars and we're highly recruited. Show me one kid that is a highly recruited 4* kid that Herman has brought in. Not saying he can't do it but it's not getting done. If you ok with kids with only one or two offers then something wrong with you because I don't see Bama, OSU, USC, UF, ND or LSU going for kids like that. Schools like Bowling Green goes after kids like that but not HERE

The players you mentioned other than Ford were already committed to Texas. They simply stayed with us after Strong was hired.

As for a highly ranked player Herman has gotten us, how about RB Toneil Carter? #6 overall RB in the country according to 247 composite, and I'm pretty certain a higher rated recruit than anyone Strong brought in to finish that 2014 class.

Just added another low end three star pick that was committed to Houston (originally UConn). I'm sorry but this is not a good showing. There are maybe three players in this class that there is a reasonable probability will ever see the field. One was already committed, the other fell in Herman's lap. The rest were committed to, or at least recruited by UH.

Are you talking about Cummins? He was never committed to Houston and the dudes recruitment just started to really pick up! He would have likely ended up at TCU or OU, damn good get considering who he would have ended up with.

It's funny how folks think a coach is suppose to kill it during a regime change...

Speaking of Cummins:
Multiple people aka "recruiting experts" who have been gushing over Walker Little, calling him the best OL prospect they have ever seen, #1 player in the nation, #1 draft pick potential, blah blah blah...... Well we have the two dudes committed that gave him the most fits and trouble all year. Bimage (3 star) and Cummins (3 star) put Little on skates mulitple times and made play after play against him. If Little pans out, which IMO he definitely will, then these dudes must be beasts as well.

I know the statistics prove that more often than not the star rankings are more accurate than not, but especially in the first year, when you don't have the time you would like to build the relationships needed, I like the fact that they are going after guys that are fringe 4 star guys who will probably have a chip on their shoulder when they get here. Both Bimage and Cummins appear to have that nasty, mean streak that our defense has been lacking. I, for one, and pretty happy with both of these signings. And lets remember, this team is full of guys who were 4 & 5 star guys. Everyone knew this class was not going to be as good as the last two just due to numbers and what was needed, but I like this class. I think there are 3-5 guys so far that are all conference type players by the time they are done.

Yes, he was committed to UConn, and based on what I read, was set to flip to Houston. The recruitment picked up because BU and TCU showed interest.
I wasn't expecting Herman to kill it, I just wasn't expecting a class of mostly low end players with few offers.
Not trying to pick on the kid, but he was closer to a two star than a four star.

You cant look at Urban to tOSU and get the same feel, they were still winning when they tossed Trestle to the curb, but Urban's first class at Florida coming from Utah was ranked 15th with 18 signees I believe (8 four stars, 9 three stars with a 3.39 average).. Hermans transition class will be similar. People expect too much based off nothing, three losing seasons, zero recruiting momentum for the program previous to Strong being fired and a new staff taking control of the situation. Relationships are the most important aspect of recruiting.

Thank you! It wasn't like UT was winning the conference the last 3 years and the coach "moved up" this program has been struggling for the like 5-8 years, that isn't going to change over night. Very similar to the coaching discussion that was had, we weren't going to get Urban, Saban, Dabo, etc regardless of how much money we threw at them. While Texas may still be a big brand globally, it isn't the end all be all when it comes to football. Many other places that have the same, if not more, advantages. Same goes with recruiting.

Of course winning cures all, I just hoped for a couple of moves to make the class a little stronger rather than filling it out with mostly duds.

f$&King ridiculous to consider them duds. It's about fit, need and scheme!
ok, so to be precise on this kid, not looking good with the remaining DE target, plus we might lose a current commit to OU. So this kid is a need. That does not mean they didn't scrape the barrel to find him. Maybe "dud" is the wrong choice, but he certainly isn't a highly ranked prospect, and anyone who says Herman looked beyond rankings because he saw something is being dishonest.

Can't call the duds before they ever get to campus and prove themselves on the field. A lot of 5 star and 4 star guys are duds too. Let them have their chance! There's a lot of talented guys out there with low, little, or no star ranking at all. The NFL is full of dudes who were looked over in recruiting or were late bloomers or whatever you want to call them.

Nobody is, You take the best you can get and move on. Chassion is a Texas lean, not looking good? Losing Q to OU would suck., but that doesn't look as likely as some perceive it be.

It's a damn transition class that had 7 kids committed when he took the job after three losing seasons under Strong. WTF do these unrealistic fans eat for breakfast every morning?

The class currently has 14 commits, 7 four stars and 6 three stars for an average of 3.43, I guess we could grab some space fillers like Arizona who currently has the 25th ranked class with 25 commits, 2 four stars and 20 three stars for a 2.96 average. Star gazing gets you nowhere unless you are pulling the Bama and tOSU type classes. Got to win to pull those kids.

So I did some research on some blue bloods (Texas, tOSU, OU, Florida, LSU, Alabama, Michigan) regarding the NFL and why some Texas HS kids are leaving the state. From 2010-2016 here are the draft numbers by year, total, in parenthesis is the number of kids in the 1st or 2nd round followed by the overall number
Texas: 6,4,2,2,0,5,1 (7) - 20 total
tOSU: 4,5,4,3,5,5,12 (15) - 38 total
OU: 6,4,7,6,4,7,4 (8) 38 total
UF: 9,4,2,8,4,8,7 (16) 42 total
LSU: 4,6,5,9,9,4,5 (13) 42 total
Bama: 7,5,8,9,8,7,7 (29) 51 total
UM: 3,2,3,0,2,3,3 (5) 16 Total

So of all those schools, the only Michigan is behind us in talent to the NFL and 1st & 2nd rounders. Texas is no longer THE place for recruits to go. Plus with the advent of social media, it is no longer unheard of to go from Florida to Oregon and have a lot of friends there already.

Per 247, yes, thats why he was a need. I don't know how good their information is.

EJ Holland? He has Chassion, Graham and Johnson all CB'ed to Texas. Got to sell subs.
Chaisson is UT's to lose. The Cummins sign was not to fill Chaisson's spot, they play totally different positions - especially in Orlando's 3-4 defense. Cummins took Carson's spot, who decommitted bc he's a grade risk and will have to go JUCO.

Aren't we sending a running back to the NFL that was a 3*???

This is how I predict we finish out our class (if we do it'll be best case scenario...bc well recuiting is unpredictable):

G. Johnson- 4 star LB, #1 JUCO LB
Chaisson- 5 star OLB/DE
Zabie- 4 star OT

1 WR out of Pouncey, Gardiner, Calvin, or Miller

1 DB out of Calloway (4*) or Guidry

SDE Max Cummins
Fort Worth, TX (All Saints Episcopal HS) – Video
3-star – 6-6/255 – #92 national position rank – 247

I discuss [fit] so often because it’s essential for success for all players who aren’t necessarily elite. Cummins couldn’t be a better fit at a position where resources are limited – 4i defensive end.

In Orlando’s scheme he’ll be tasked to play big versus interior linemen while sometimes being asked to be a stand-up rusher. When not holding the point of attack, he’ll be asked to knife through and make plays. He also shows good lateral agility and initial quickness.

His potential is the most appealing. He runs a 4.7 (40), 4.1 (shuttle), 30 vertical, 327 on the bench, and 500 on the squat.
[IT]

Cummins has great size with room to add weight and play above 270. He has great length with long arms and wide shoulders. Cummins moves well for his size, and he shows a good ability to bend and move laterally. Cummins anchors well against the run, and drives his feet to get to the ball carrier. He shows a decent first step off the line, and pursues with a motor that doesn’t quit.

He plays with great intensity and intelligence, and shows the ability to drop in coverage from time to time. His lateral ability allows him to play both players on the option to disrupt plays in the backfield.

It’s easy to see why Cummins blew up at the end of the cycle like he did. Long, athletic players with a strong motor are valuable pieces. If Cummins adds the weight he needs and refines his game he could turn in to a multi year starter with all conference ability.
[HS]

6'6" 255 and to look at that pic above he almost looks skinny. He has lots of room to grow.Watching his film against Little, I would take "scraping the barrel" again.

I dont get ragging on Herman for not drawing as well as tOSU when we are coming off a losing 3 year stretch. Mack Brown and Nick Saban in glory years would have had a hard time selling that.

Tell me that Herman is unproven at this level and we can talk, but to piss and moan over this first recruiting cycle with a new staff is frankly too rediculous to even discuss.

His offer list is what leads to that conclusion, not his size, and sure, if we want to cheer lead we can pretend Herman sees hidden potential here and he was a first option. That isn't true, but hey, lets be optimistic.
I don't expect to have the same type of class as a national contender at this point, I just hoped for one or two recruits I could point to and say this is the type of player Herman can get. Not going to get it this cycle.

Sorry your disappointed. I bet you threw fits as a child when you got the wrong GI Joe for Christmas. No, they are obviously not getting their first choices but they still have to fill a team. Just to remind you, these are the same caliber of players that have been kicking our 4 and 5 stars ass every week the last few years in an embarrassing fashion. Quit whining and let the coaches do their job.

this is a recruiting thread. Recruiting is not going particularly well. Sorry if it offends you that I'm not being supportive enough. I bet you are the type of person that needs a safe space when someone says something you don't agree with. (I don't know you, and you are more than welcome to be satisfied with the class, but please don't get personal just because I disagree)

I don't expect to have the same type of class as a national contender at this point, I just hoped for one or two recruits I could point to and say this is the type of player Herman can get. Not going to get it this cycle.
What about Carter and Brewer? Both of those are pretty good gets in a short period of time. How many of the ones that you feel we missed on would have come here if Charlie was still here? The only one I can think of is Marvin Wilson, he is visiting South Florida because that is where Charlie is. I don't think any of others were going to come to Austin regardless of who the coach was.
