Recruiting Thread 2017

Ricky's '98 run set it off for Mack. Herman needs give the 2018 class reasons to believe by winning some dang games in 2017.

lol, as much flack as folks like to give bubble screen Davis or GDGD, the wheels began to fall off for Mack when he made him fall on the stake...

Mack/GDGD went 5-7 in 2010 because they started mailing it in on the recruiting trial well before that.

Agree the rot was already there, covered up by really talented QB and skill guys. The OL specifically was a cesspool well before 2010. Once the bottom fell out Mack wasn't going to lead them out of the hole even though he was still recruiting at a high level for the next couple of years.

Having on open depth chart certainly doesn't hurt, but all of the elite Texas guys aren't going to OSU, Bama, LSU, and Stanford because Texas is stacked. They want to win first are foremost and there isn't a program in this state right now that satisfies that.
Well sure. Winning ovbiously changes minds to. But point is guys will come for playing time even if they don't win right away. If you can't offer that and you may not win. Gonna be tough to switch guys commitment. I don't think it's a coincidence that Hermans biggest commit is a 4 star running back. The position that is probably the most open.

I disagree. What positions aren't open on this team? LT? We haven't had a winning season in 3 years but our depth chart is stacked? Yeah it's stacked with bodies. Outside of Foreman (gone) and Williams there isn't a player or position that didn't look like hot garbage for good stretches last year. Outside of the OL and QB there isn't a position group that a talented freshman couldn't get PT at.

We aren't missing on guys for an inability to offer PT.

Well then we're missing because guys aren't jumping on board with Herman the way they did Strong. And yes if you buy in to the theory that the coaching was the problem at UT then we have a talented roster that with good coaching should put out a better product.

along with a strong belief those schools will prepare them for the NFL..

We will continue to see that until we start winning. I think we were getting top players but sad to say with Strong gone, kids are more looking OOS. I think Herman can be a great coach but recruiting is not looking great for him right now. Ed Oliver is the only top kid he has gotten since being a head coach. Recruiting is the thing that will save his job and I still say getting guys with only one or two offers will not cut it here at UT.

We have to be patient with Coach Herman because this is his first recruiting class. He just got here and there are all the distractions when taking over moving the families, getting settled in etc..... Next year he wont have to deal with that and we will do a lot better. And it still looks like were going to be ok on signing day.

I agree. I just don't want to see 2 and 3 star kids getting offered next year. I would like to see UT offering the best in state and OOS

Somewhat funny this gets mentioned. Garrett Gilbert is still on an NFL roster....
Pretty sure he got battered wife syndrome at Texas. Dude had all of the physical tools, not sure he has it between the ears, but he had the physical tools

Found this interesting. Not sure who or what it's about

He was Greg Little's handler.

What a dumb@$$! The guy makes his coin brokering HS kids to colleges and he publicly threatens a college? Good luck with that business model. Tight lips, not shakedowns, are what those kind of coaches want when making those transactions.

Thanks, I missed Miller and Brewer. Should be a good mix of croots!

It appears that Miller has his academics in order and he is no longer an academic risk. If this is true, it's big news.

ILB Gary Johnson
Birmingham, AL (Dodge City C.C., KS) - Video
4-star - 6-1/225 - #1 national position rank - 247

How can you not love a guy who titled his Hudl video, "I Hate QB's and RB's!!"? If his stats listed on his Hudl page are correct, it appears he'll be showing alotta hate in some fiery burnt orange.
  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.26
  • Shuttle: 4.51
  • Vertical: 39.4
  • Powerball: 38
  • Bench: 305

Johnson could be one of the most important recruits of the 2017 class. He’s ultra-quick playing in the box and can scrape laterally as well as anyone on the roster but with a much better idea of what he’s trying to accomplish. This is what an ideal, modern inside linebacker looks like. Johnson is quick and smart enough to handle option or spread passing schemes but also sturdy enough to fill inside and handle lead run schemes.

Johnson gets downhill in a hurry and looks like he is shot out of a... cannon. He arrives at the ball carrier with bad intentions... He can run, he will strike you, he has good range, he squares guys up, and he plays with a bad attitude.

He can get downhill in a hurry and closes with controlled violence. He’s another example of what Todd Orlando appears to want in his blitz-happy defense. Johnson also does a good job of leveraging the ball. Reportedly Oregon likes him at safety so he gives you the added versatility of being a LB who can cover. Johnson is a former Alabama commit, but due to some academic barriers he can’t transfer to an SEC school.

His Hudl says he runs a 4.26 40? That is Chris Johnson, fastest in the NFL range. Surely that can't be accurate for a LB?

Gary Johnson, Juco LB, has committed. This is the kind of thing I was hoping for. The staff went out and competed to get a kid who wasn't already headed for Houston.
How bout them apples Horn. By golly, this was a must get and they got it done.

Now we need that signature. but, this was clearly a calculated BOOM.

yeah....lets get back to that 4.26 40....I heard he was fast, but that is rediculous fast. A 39.4 vertical???...That is NBA stuff. I realize that recruits ht and wt and 40 times are sometimes exagerated, but if he is even close to that then he might be faster than Duverney...I want to see some verification on that....hell, he would leave Malik in the dust ( then again, Malik has 15 to 20 pounds on him)

The vertical doesn't bother me as much. There are some absolute freak athletes out there, but that kind of speed is world class sprinter speed. I would think 4.26 is faster than Duverney. The fast 40 recorded as the NFL combine is 4.24 that Chris Johnson ran. Marquis Goodwin (the OLYMPIAN) ran a 4.27. I hope this is true as there isn't a back in the conference, or probably the country that if even, our dude doesn't catch.

Can you put this dude opposite of Malik and just let them roam sideline to sideline making RB's feel really slow? Also saw that Oregon liked him as a safety. Could he fill that hard hitting safety/LB hybrid that everyone loves?

He's a 4.5 guy. He's a linebacker not some shifty corner or safety! ILB and immediate contributor.
