Recruiting Thread 2018

Maybe it's just the reporting of it then, but if the THSCA is 30k members, then how can they all be collectively upset at Jimbo or any other coach for that matter? Why are they always referred to as a single entity? Is there a spokesperson that issues the official stance of the organization? What does it mean to be in the good graces of the THSCA vs the bad?
Idk maybe I worded that bad in my OP, but I don't think all 30k members are mad at him. Maybe just a few, maybe none, maybe it's all blown out of proportion. Like anything there's an elected council and different committee's within the THSCA who speak on behalf of the association. Do they speak for all 30k I doubt it, but the majority yes. I think this thing is being blown out of proportion just like the Strong deal. But it gets clicks and is a popular story because of who's involved.

This is from the THSCA website:
Our Objectives:

  1. To help maintain the highest possible standards in athletics and the coaching profession and to work together for the improvement of conditions of Texas high school athletics.

  2. To secure a better understanding of the opportunities of improvement in high school coaching and to place at the disposal of coaches sources of information.

  3. To attempt to improve the major sports in all phases by aiding the coaches in securing a more thorough understanding of the various sports.

  4. To have a representative group of coaches to whom athletic problems of general interest may be referred, in hopes of creating better relationships between schools.

  5. To promote good fellowship and social contact among coaches.

I know we also collectively fight and petition legislation that will hurt the UIL and public school athletics. For instance bills are trying to get passed to take the athletic period out of the school day, or letting private schools into the UIL to compete against and be in the same districts as public schools. Which the THSCA is obviously against, and without us fighting it, those bills would probably have gotten passed.

Hope that helps, I felt like I was rambling.

Committed Visitors: For a few weeks now, we’ve been reporting that Texas is going to host a huge official visit this weekend. There will be some uncommitted recruits in town but there will also be a big number of Texas commits in town as well doing some recruiting. Some of those guys are…

Heights (TX) CB Jalen Green

Alief Taylor (TX) WR Brennan Eagles

Hou. Lamar (TX) CB D’Shawn Jamison

Hou. Lamar (TX) WR Al’Vonte Woodard

Dekaney (TX) TE Malcolm Epps

Westfield (TX) DT Keondre Coburn

Eastern Hills (TX) OLB Byron Hobbs

Seminole (TX) OT Reese Moore

Wakeland (TX) OT Rafiti Ghirmai

IMG Academy (FL) LB Ayodele Adeoye

The Texas High school football coaches get upset at various coaches every year it seems. In some cases it’s probably for attention. In other cases they might have legit beefs. At the end of the day though it doesn’t mean a whole lot. Most of them probably don’t even know Jimbo very well if at all.

Where things stand with key 2018 prospects

The Horns247 staff was back on the road this week and saw several targets in action. Let’s start with the guy on everybody’s mind — five-star cornerback Anthony Cook. There was a report out earlier this week that Cook would be making his decision on Dec. 20. Yes, he will be signing that day. But that doesn’t mean that a decision won’t come from Cook before then. From talking directly to Cook and his family, they are still weighing there options and are contemplating having a commitment party a la D’shawn Jamison or making a commitment video. Right now, there is no set date on when Cook will pull the trigger. The latest he wants to do it is on the day he is slated to sign.

So where do things stand overall? Not much has changed. LSU and Texas are in a heated battle with Ohio State on the outside looking in. It looks like things are truly 50-50 heading into his decision, but if I were forced to make a pick, it would be Texas — trust me, I don’t feel comfortable saying that. Cook has seen everything from the schools he’s considering. It’s simply about following his heart/gut and going with the best fit. Cook’s family will be supportive regardless and doesn’t have a preference.

Texas is still targeting Alabama defensive line commit Vernon Jackson, and the Longhorns are a legitimate player here. The Crimson Tide would like to keep him in the fold, but they aren’t going to lose sleep as he continues to research options closer to home. Jackson’s interest in Texas has grown significantly as of late, and we expect him to make an official visit in January. Texas needs to focus on keeping nose tackle Keondre Coburn. As we reported earlier in the week, A&M is making a push for Coburn, and he doesn’t plan on signing early with the Longhorns. The Aggies are expected to make an in-home visit with him early next week and host him for an official visit in the near future. Coburn will make an OV to TCU next weekend and is also set to see Alabama and UCLA.

Obviously, Texas is getting him in for an official visit this weekend. It is imperative for the Longhorns to do everything they can to convince him to stick with his verbal pledge. (EJ Holland)

Jimbo Fisher on the wrong side of THSCA?

A story started making the rounds on late Tuesday night that new Texas A&M Head Coach Jimbo Fisher had angered the Texas High School Coaches Association. Fisher met with THSCA president Gary Joseph on his first day recruiting at Katy High school, where Joseph is the head coach. Fisher then met with Fast 7v7 Head Coach Ro Simon at Simon’s home. Fast is one of the best select 7-on-7 organizations in the country, and is home to some top talent in Texas. Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football reported on Twitter that this meeting angered the THSCA in their ever-growing battle against select 7v7. In talking with a source, it sounds like the high school coaches were upset that Fisher made a visit to Simon and validated 7v7. While the nature of recruiting is drifting more towards groups like Fast, many high school coaches are against it.

One source told me that meeting with Simon was essentially putting a 7-on-7 coach equal with a guy like Joseph. I don’t think it was a bad move to meet with Simon, but I understand the optics of the situation. In contrast, Tom Herman and many other coaches have hosted Fast and Simon on their campuses before, but they did not draw the same ire. Many times, these 7v7 coaches come to campus with a group of their kids on a visit. The coaches might meet with them to build a relationship, but it’s usually a private event and the significance of it being on campus versus an “in-home” visit looks a lot better in the public eye.

Even those in the 7v7 community know the dynamics of existing in a world with the THSCA. I spoke to a high-level source in the world of 7v7 who told me they know there are certain protocols to be followed being caught in between high school coaches and college recruiters. This person acknowledged that while those rules aren’t fair to well-intentioned organizations, they are part of the game everyone signed up for. When new coaches are hired at colleges in Texas, the idea of outsiders versus insiders is always brought up. When Herman was hired, he immediately acknowledged high school coaches in his introductory press conference, and even name-checked a few for emphasis. He then spent his first few weeks on the job getting face time with those coaches. The fact that Fisher met with Simon on Day 1 was brought up several times by those I spoke to in the coaching community.

Charlie Strong dealt with a scorned THSCA during his time at Texas, and while it never stopped him from recruiting well, it did present some obstacles. Fisher can surely get over this, but it does go to show the difference between recruiting at Florida State and Texas A&M. (Mike Roach)

7 on 7 is the aau of football. if they aren't checked soon, they will grow out of control like aau did, where kids choose to play for their 7 on 7 team and opt to not play for their high school.

What’s the insider feeling on Coburn?
He has a former coach on staff, he has Ed Oliver telling him how much he enjoyed playing for our staff, there seems to be a lot of bell ringing over nothing.

This kid has offers from Bama and LSU, why on earth would he pick Aggy or Purple Baylor?

Yeah it seems the aggy side is just hyping the narrative that Jimbo will get anyone he wants recruiting wise rather than looking at actual intelligence into the Coburn recruitment.

War Room:

We’re officially less than two weeks away from the early signing period (December 20-22), and things are moving at a fast and furious pace with a number of prospects. Let’s go position by position on where things stand with the Horns’ top targets …

Quarterback

Casey Thompson (UT commitment) – The Newcastle (OK) product will take his official visit to Texas this weekend. Thompson has never given any indication that he’s looking around and I don’t expect that to change at this point. He’ll enroll at Texas in January.

Cameron Rising (UT commitment) – Every time I’ve talked to Rising over the past several months, he’s said the right things about his UT commit and he’s never really given any reason to be concerned. When I spoke with him this week, it was more of the same, but he has yet to completely rule out the possibility of taking a visit to a place like LSU or Arizona State. Texas has done a couple in-homes with him in the past two weeks and Tom Herman is scheduled to do another next week. I feel confident that he sticks with Texas due to his relationship with the coaches, but the slight chance that he may visit elsewhere means this one is still worth watching.

Running back

Keaontay Ingram (UT commitment) – I’m still expecting Ingram to be the only back in this class, and I’d still be shocked if he didn’t wind up at Texas. That being said, he did tell me this week that he’s unsure if he’ll sign in December or wait until February, and he hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of taking other visits either. Even with all that, Ingram landing anywhere other than Texas would be a shock.

Craig Williams – He’s committed to Baylor, but a coach at his school told another Rivals reporter he had been invited in for an official visit by Texas. I’ll be a little surprised if anything comes of this one, but probably a name worth filing away just in case.

Wide receiver

Brennan Eagles (UT commitment) – He’ll take his official visit this weekend and has been locked in for a while.

Al'Vonte Woodard (UT commitment) – Pretty much the same status as Eagles.

Rondale Moore (UT commitment) – As we mentioned earlier in the week, Moore is not planning on signing in December, per someone close to him. Texas did a good job of tightening up its grip on Moore’s commitment when Moore took his official visit in October, but sources told us this week that Purdue is still a major factor in this one and Moore may visit Purdue next weekend (“That’s the plan as of now,” I was told on Thursday night). Texas is going to have to work to hold onto this one. If he does wind up taking a Purdue OV, the guess here is that calling this one a coin-flip may be a bit generous.

Jaylen Waddle – Expected to visit A&M this week, which pretty much closes the book for Texas.

Terrace Marshall Jr. – Texas is pretty much out of this one.

Tommy Bush – Things have quieted down with this one. It’s not out of the question that the Longhorns could circle back to him and show more interest, but right now there are other areas on which the staff is focusing.

Julon Williams – He doesn’t have an offer, but has been in talks with Texas and he could be a guy the coaches try to target if something happens with Rondale Moore.

Tight end

Malcolm Epps (UT commitment) – He’ll take his UT official visit this weekend. Epps has been solid for a long time.

Luke Ford – Ford recently listed a top three of Alabama, Georgia and Auburn, but the Longhorns aren’t giving up. Corby Meekins has done in-home visits the past two weeks, but this one doesn’t look like it’ll fall UT’s way..
Dominick Anderson – Anderson doesn’t talk much, but according to a teammate of his, Texas is still in the mix. It would be a pretty odd story to see him re-commit to the Longhorns, and he’s supposed to take an official visit to A&M this weekend. I’m not expecting Texas to be much of a factor in this one, but Anderson’s a bit of a ghost so it’s hard to tell what he’s thinking.

Nic McTear – He visited for a game recently and really likes Texas, but doesn’t have an offer at this time.

Offensive line

Reese Moore (UT commitment) – He’ll visit this weekend and is locked in.

Rafiti Ghirmai (UT commitment) – He’ll visit this weekend as well. He has talked about taking other visits, but I’ll be a little surprised if that happens.

Junior Angilau – I’ve long-believed that Texas was the team to beat for Angilau. If his mother has her way, he’ll be a Longhorn. He’s planning to take some other visits, but the guess here is that he winds up at Texas.

Badara Traore – Committed to LSU on Thursday evening. Tough blow for Texas there.

Cameron Wire – He’s committed to LSU and may visit Texas at some point, but pulling a committed player from Louisiana away from LSU seems unlikely.

Mikey Grandy – A new JUCO offer, Grandy is supposed to visit Texas next weekend. A recent UCLA offer muddied the waters a bit on this one, but Texas still has a very good chance at landing him based on my conversation with Grandy last week.

Jahmir Johnson – Ultra-athletic JUCO tackle told OB he’ll take a Texas official visit on December 15. He has already visited Arkansas, will visit Missouri this weekend and USC on January 19. Too early to predict how this one will play out but Johnson becomes a bigger priority with Traore off the board.

Kaitori Leveston – He told Rivals.com last week that he’ll be sticking with his Kansas State pledge, but I don’t expect Texas to just throw in the towel. If the Longhorns can get him on campus, he’d be a strong flip candidate.

Trevor Elbert – There’s been talk that JUCO OL Elbert could join Johnson and Grandy on an official visit next week, but I’m still working to confirm that one.

Defensive line

Keondre Coburn (UT commitment) – Coburn will visit Texas this weekend. As of right now, he’s planning on taking other official visits and it may be tough for UT to talk him out of that since he’s been saying for months he wanted to see other places. Having a key DL commit take visits isn’t good, but I wouldn’t lose too much sleep about Coburn flipping elsewhere. He said this week the other visits would just be so he could verify that he made the right choice with Texas, which I expect will happen.

Moro Ojomo – Texas offered this week and this one looks to be heading in the right direction. Ojomo told OB he’ll take a UT visit in January and he’s been hoping for the Texas offer for a while. Would be a nice addition to the class and I think it happens.

Vernon Jackson – He’s still committed to Alabama but is planning to visit Texas in January. If Bama starts to fill up before then, or if Jackson just decides he wants to stay closer to home, this one looks pretty good for Texas.

Bobby Brown – Texas is staying on him but I don’t see that one happening. He likely sticks with A&M.

Max Wright – Same story as Bobby Brown.

Daniel Carson – He visited UT, but he doesn’t tip his hand at all so it’s tough to say what he might be thinking. He’s supposed to visit Miami this weekend.

Jarrett Jackson – The current Louisville commitment has visited Texas and South Carolina. He’ll take his official visit to Louisville this weekend and told us everyone will know of his final decision on December 20. Jackson says he’s torn, but if his twitter action means anything, Louisville looks like a safe bet to hold onto his pledge.

Joshua Landry – He doesn’t have a Texas offer yet, but could factor in if things don’t shape up well with some other guys.

Linbacker

Byron Hobbs (UT commitment) – Nobody is more locked in to his commitment than Hobbs.

Ayodele Adeoye (UT commitment) – He’s supposed to visit this weekend but it’s hard to tell what Adeoye is thinking. The last time Rivals interviewed him, he said the right things about his commitment status but he has already taken one other official visit. This is one we’ll be watching until he actually signs his LOI.

DaShaun White – The coaching change at A&M has made this one tough to predict. Whereas I thought White would wind up at either Texas or Oklahoma before Jimbo Fisher was hired, I’m not quite sure where he’s leaning now. Texas continues to make him a priority but there’s a lot of buzz about OU, and he is still technically committed to A&M.

Joseph Ossai – There’s been talk for a while that Ossai would be making a decision, but things have slowed down a bit with A&M’s coaching change. It’ll be either Texas or A&M, and if the Aggies retain DL coach Terry Price (which appears likely), Ossai probably sides with A&M.

Nikolas Bonitto – He has already visited Texas and Louisville. He’ll visit OU next weekend and may visit Alabama as well. Louisville has been on him the longest so a lot of people think that’s where he’ll wind up, but Bonitto told OB on Thursday that he doesn’t have any favorites.

Amari Gainer – He was going to visit Texas this weekend but FSU did an in-home and shut that one down.

Damone Clark – Clark enjoyed his Texas official visit, but it’s hard to see the Longhorns pulling a Baton Rouge kid away from his LSU commitment.

Defensive back

Caden Sterns – He’s locked in. Nothing to worry about here.

DeMarvion Overshown – He tweeted this week that he’s all ready to sign in a couple weeks.

B.J. Foster – Arguably the highest upside of anyone in the class. Locked in, will enroll early .

D'Shawn Jamison – Texas’ most recent commitment, from back in October. Will visit this weekend and is locked in.

Jalen Green – There’s talk of schools like LSU and A&M trying to make a run at Green but I’m not expecting anything crazy to happen. He’ll visit this weekend as well.

Anthony Cook – Same story, different day for Cook. I wish I had something new to report, but I don’t. Texas or LSU, with Ohio State on the outside looking in. His decision could literally come at any moment, and it’s an extremely close race. I continue to feel that Texas looks good with Holton Hill opening up an opportunity for early playing time.

Kicker

Cameron Dicker – Locked in.

A quick update on quarterback Tanner McKee, out of Corona (CA) Centennial …
McKee, who will be a member of the 2020 class after taking a two-year mission following his high school graduation, was paid an in-home visit by Tim Beck this week.

“The visit went great. Really enjoyed it,” McKee said via text.
McKee said Beck spoke to him about how well he would fit into what Texas does on offense.

So far, he has taken official visits to Texas, Texas A&M and Alabama. He’ll visit Stanford in January but that will be it (no BYU official visit).

As for the Longhorns …

“Texas definitely fits in. That’s why I’m still talking with them,” McKee said. “I like what they are doing and I like the coaches.” (Suchomel)

******Keaontay Ingram and his Carthage teammates continue to march on in the state playoffs. Last week, Carthage won handily, and Ingram had a huge game, going for 161 yards and 2 TDs on just 8 carries, along with a 59-yard TD reception.
For Ingram, it was just another day at the office.

“I felt like I had an okay game,” Ingram said.

Okay? What would he consider a good game?

“Probably like 275 yards,” Ingram said.

Tom Herman and Stan Drayton did an in-home visit with Ingram last week, and Ingram said things went very well.

“It was awesome. We had a family bond, got to know a little about them, asked questions that needed to be asked,” Ingram said. “I felt like they answered some questions and we had a good time.
“I didn’t really have questions. My grandparents had questions - how they feel about academics, schooling, lifestyle, asked about church as well. My family is big on church. They mentioned the churches they have on campus.”

Other schools, like Oklahoma State, LSU, USC, Baylor and Michigan continue to work Ingram. The standout back said he’s “pretty solid” with his Texas commitment, and as of right now he’s unsure if he’ll take any other visits.

“I still don’t know (about visits), to be honest with you. I’m still so solid right now,” Ingram said.

The 6-0, 190-pounder said he’s considering signing in December, but he’s not certain if he’ll do that or wait until February. I did ask him if A&M might be a school he’d consider if the Aggies reached out.

“That doesn’t have too much of an impact. I did have an FSU offer, but they weren’t on me too hard,” Ingram said. “I’m really not too worried about that right now.” (Suchomel)

i understand what you're saying, but aau doesn't resemble actual basketball either. IF IT GETS THE KIDS THE EXPOSURE AND ATTENTION THEY WANT, they will absolutely forego high school ball for 7 on 7. it's happened in a few, currently rare cases already. i don't know what the equivalent would be for linemen, and maybe one doesn't exist, but the divas want attention. example-- kid goes to a school that runs slot-t. he's not gonna get the stats of his buddies. so instead of playing safety or halfback for school, he "focuses" on 7 on 7. anybody can have fancy stats with 7 on 7, and there is less actual grind involved, so some will opt out of high school ball if the 7 on 7 coordinator is given similar power to the high school coach.

Yeah but someone who strictly plays 7 on 7 isn’t going to be a very good 11 on 11 full contact football player. Do you think there is going to be a long line of schools ready to sign up defensive players that have never actually tackled anyone, WRs that never had to block, RBs that have never been tackled, or QBs that never had to deal with a pass rush or any DL? Yeah sure it’s something they could learn but they only have 5 years to play 4 in college.

If college football is going to continue as a contact sport, 7 on 7 only wouldn’t be a good pool to get talent. Maybe someone forgoes 11 on 11 football but it’s not going to be an epidemic.

i'm going to try to not hijack the thread. but recruiting ain't about the best high school player. more often than not, it's about a coach coming in and seeing a frame. or looking at track times. then they get them into camps to talk to them. you can see if a defensive back can run and cover, has hips. a wr can run routes and show that he can catch. a qb can show timing, arm strength, coverage recognition, etc. anyway, if there is an easier way out, somebody will find it. apologize for highjacking the thread.

Just take it in stride. Think of it as a 2020 commit and continue to root for him and Texas.

I don't think it's a forgone conclusion he's going on a mission, but if he does it's kind of hard to get excited unless you just like seeing our aggregate point total go up a little.

I do not care about the aggregate point total. That is for people who want superficial success. Focusing only on the 2018 class and team is also kind of superficial.
Especially in a situation that you do not have control over.

Football is kind of superficial. Certainly doesn't stop you me from having an opinion about it.

Third top 25 tackle in the class whether he is 2020 or not. Need some guards and he likely projected as guard.

We have two top 25 tackles committed, he is the third. We simply may not see him until 2020. Need Guards.

Not seeing him until 2020 + however long it takes to get back into OL shape kind of defeats the purpose though right that is if he even comes here in 2020. This is the equivalent of landing a sophmore's commitment to me. It's positive but doesn't mean much right now.
