None of us should be surprised that the Dodgers are at the forefront of this scandal, likely led by the loudest anti-Astros hypocrite (Trevor Bauer) of them all. Highest spin rate in recorded history this year. Any Dodgers fan complaining about getting beaten by the Astros in 2017 simply doesn't understand how ironic that is and was.

From the article:

An SI analysis of Statcast data suggests that one team in particular leads the industry in spin: the defending world champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to the data, L.A. has by a large margin the highest year-to-year increase of any club in spin rate on four-seam fastballs, which are considered a bellwether pitch. In fact, the Dodgers’ four-seam spin rate is higher than that of any other team in the Statcast era. There is no proof the Dodgers are doctoring baseballs, but nearly across the board, their hurlers’ spin rates on that pitch have increased this season from last.

The Dodgers declined to comment.

Didn’t Charlie Morton also have a huge spin rate increase his time in Houston? That seems to happen a lot these days

Everybody cheats. And I’m sick of the whining about the Astros. But pitch doctoring is as old as the game. Done by everyone. Heck it gave Mike Scott a Cy Young. I’m kind of nonplussed by it. Electronic stealing isn’t baseball. Jacking with baseballs is as baseball as it gets.

yes I was a pitcher. Lol.

Just like the dodgers, yankess, and red sox. Pivot to the Astros!

Stealing signs is as old as time- using electronics just makes it more effective.

Doctoring baseballs is as old as time - hiring chemists to design specific composites that are stickier than anything available in a normal dugout makes it more effective.

they’re both cheating. To be at the forefront of the latter cheating, while still crying like a little bitch about the former, is beyond pthetic

Yea banging trash cans is real high tech.

There are a lot of HOF pitchers who doctored the ball.

P.S. I posted about this in one of the Astros game threads. Garrett Richards for the Red Sox was blatantly cheating. Before almost every pitch he wen to the rosin bag. Then he would wipe his index and middle finger over his shiny forearm. Rosin plus sunscreen = sticky.

both bauer & cole had spin rate decreases in the their last starts (both Ls) .. timed with the announcement that MLB was going to start a crack down. will it be bigger scandal than sign stealing? maybe not but its as.. probably more wide spread as sign stealing.

i think people are about to see just how much impact spin rate has on pitching... and the inability to hit.

Bauer gave up a season high 6 hits in that game and Cole tied his season high in ERs.

Whitey Ford allegedly scuffed the ball on his belt buckle as he stood on the mound looking in at his catcher. That was a long time ago, before most of you characters were born. It's a time-honored tradition. You can watch him; he frequently held the ball at his mid-section, his gloved hand blocking the view of his pitching hand.

Everyone used electronic sign-stealing also...and then the league made a stink about it and the Astros got caught continuing to do it again and were punished.

Same will happen here. The league is now making a stink about it and whichever teams/pitchers get caught doing it will be more severely punished.

Foreign substance is exactly why his spin rate when off the charts last season and got him a Cy Young.

i think one difference on the scuffing vs sticky stuff is the control the sticky stuff gives in addition to the movement. scuffing is more about movement. we are also talking about a collection of talent in the majors that throws much faster than those in the past. this is crazy velo mixed in with control and movement. yikes.

If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying hard enough to win.

2 big differences between the “scandals”:

1. MLB didn’t make as much of a public “stink” about the stealing signs scandal as they have with the doctoring balls scandal. They released some memos but didn’t go through the effort they are going through now with this new scandal. They had caught two teams cheating before the memo (Red Sox and Yankees) but didn’t make any real effort to clean it up and gave those teams slaps on the wrists, so no one took them seriously.

2. The Astros weren’t the only team caught “cheating” after MLB made a “stink” about it. Red Sox and Yankees were both caught after but neither was punished as severe or made an example of and several teams (including the Dodgers) were accused of cheating but were never investigated.

I'm not sure if one team cheating better at the same thing every other team is cheating at is the same as the shit the Astros pulled.

It’s rumored that the Dodgers paid Trevor Bauer so much money so they could gain access to the chemical he uses to doctor the baseball. Supposedly it’s some of the best in the game. It’s also no coincidence that all the Dodgers spin rates have gone up this year since he has signed. We’ve simply reached a new era and baseball where pitchers are trying to find new ways to cheat.

Ffs. That might be the dumbest alleged “rumor” Ive heard on here. And by a lot. Not to mention he only took 3 years and only a guaranteed $102 million. Thats pennies these days And about as team friendly as you are going to get for that type of pitcher

It has been illegal for a long time. and the astros did not communicate electronically with batters, which is what was illegal.

it's the exact same thing.

No, it's not.

Was every team beating on trashcans and illegally communicating with the player at bat? Every team in the league has players on their roster doctoring pitches. It's why no manager runs out to the home plate ump and cries foul when the other team is doing it better.

The Astros were doctoring pitches AND beating on trashcans.

It's all cheating. To pretend like no other teams were using video to steal signs and communicating that with batters is simply not true. The Red Sox were caught doing it and were punished. The Yankees were caught as well but not punished. The Dodgers were alleged by players to be doing it but weren't investigated. What planet have you been on? And what an argument to make that somehow this form of cheating is more acceptable because it's more widespread? Read the article. Some teams are hiring CHEMISTS to design foreign substances. Do all 30 teams have chemists or just the dodgers? Do you not see the parallels here?

I'm not justifying what the Astros did. I'm pointing out the blatant hypocrisy in the feaux outrage by Dodgers fans over what the Astros did, and Trevor Bauer in particular.

When the motto heralded by the sport is, "If you're not cheating you're not trying" you really shouldn't be surprised by anything. I think I've got the same view you have in terms of whining about the Astros.

Also a former pitcher - lefty with a monster curve and slide piece. The first time I touched a college baseball I realized I would never be able to play at that level, the ball had reduced the seam size dramatically compared to a high school ball. It was a sad day.

I would add Betts, Price and Kelley as well. All three players were on the 2017 and 2018 Red Sox teams that were caught cheating.

Just look at the bill.

thats against the astros!

kidding aside.. i am surprised there havent been a rash of caught foul balls with junk all of them..... given the recent accounts of players finding balls with glue , etc still on them
