Strong officially targeting Cumbie

wickline and strong are Tight...just like Bedford. I do not think strong gets rid of friends unless his hand is forced. I do not expect them to be fired.

OU didn't offer because he didn't playcall. OU went with a proven playcaller with an offense Bob was familiar with and a coordinator recommended by Mike Leach.

This would be my concern with Cumbie. He hasn't been a sole OC in charge of developing and installing an offense and the play caller in charge of executing that offense. He has however been a very good QB coach. If you want to run the air raid then im not sure there is a better choice out there right now but it is a little risky.

I think he'd be a great addition.

If Cumbie doesn't come, it won't be because of money. TCU doesn't have the cash that Texas does. They'd lose a bidding war and it wouldn't even be close. If his decision is going to based on how many Benjamin's get thrown at him, he'll be wearing burnt orange.

We also have to consider that it might not be a purely financial decision. Cumbie may have a figure in his head that would keep him at TCU, regardless of what Texas could offer.

Who knows? Right now, only Cumbie. The rest of us are just speculating... Without enough info to come to any real informed decision.

I'll just sit back and watch to see how it plays out, because if Texas is ready to open the big ass checkbook to get a good OC, we'll get one.

I think if Meachum were to go to UNT then Cumbie would stay at TCU as sole OC. I think they would offer him enough to keep him there.

saw something on another board that North Texas has hired Littrel..so you guys may get your man

Every realistic candidate is going to have some risk. It's going to take a bold move to turn this around because Strong doesn't have the time to let the safe bet play out. He's dug the hole deeper his first 2 years, to the point that every coaching job on the staff is up in question.

So does Norvell stay on as wr coach?

I think he would, assuming he wants to. I don't think Strong wants to rebuild an entire offensive staff. I think the only change will be Watson for a new OC. Possibly a new OL coach, but that's just me guessing. I can't imagine Wickline has good thoughts about how this all has played out from the lawsuit to the demotion.

I guess I'm the only one that really likes Norvell. I think he did pretty good considering what he had to work with. I mean, he had two very subpar QBs, and still managed to make Swoopes a productive contributor. That's doing something. Haven't a lot of you said that a good coach can make the best of what players he has? Well, what he did with Swoopes is make something out of nothing. That's creativity and adaptability. Shame we probably won't get to see what he can do with a real QB, or with more time to work on Heard. Yeah, Cumbie did a fine job on Boykin, who was going into his senior year. Norvell having to work with a freshman is an entirely different situation.

I am concerned that Heard will not develop much. His arm is better than advertised, but he does not seem to have that burning desire to put in the work to learn how to read defenses.

I don't disagree. Given the circumstances Norvell did better than I expected, but I don't see him as a longterm OC. We aren't going to get a real QB delivered to us by the QB fairy, we will have to develop one. We need to bring someone in that can do that. I don't think that's Norvell.

If you're Strong, do you risk your last chance on someone who hasn't called plays?
on the flipside..if you are cumbie....why do you come to this dumpster fire ? Strong will get one more year...he better win or he will be gone.

If Perrin and the BMD are serious about giving strong the support he didn't have and a real shot he's getting a 4th year baring a complete disaster. If they are just giving him a token year and he needs a miracle to get a 4th year then yeah he's going to have issues getting anyone.

I'd rather be OC at TCU than HC at UNT. I am sure the HC at UNT makes more, but long term I don't see the end game. Turn around UNT and get a better offer is a tall if not impossible task at UNT.

I think this is inaccurate.

Why is UNT impossible? They have a beautiful stadium. Play in one of the better mid-majors. They're in a recruiting hotbed.

How can programs like UL-Lafayette, Tulsa, Toledo, San Diego State, La Tech, etc. be turned around but North Texas couldn't? Yeah, it isn't easy but impossible is not a word I would use.

I just read this on 247

A guy pointed out that TCU this year had very experienced O line this year that will be gone next year as will Boykin....good time for a young coach to move on especially at triple salary....especially with a good young O line returning to Texas....we should be in good position here if that is the guy we want.

You look at all the possibilities, examine their strengths and weaknesses, trim the list, do some interviews and then decide. If there's no one else available that is an experienced and successful playcaller for the offense we want to run, then you have no choice but to roll the dice. A bonus that he is known as a powerhouse recruiter and likely has a lot of recruiting ties in the dallas area.

The length of the contract of the new OC and any guaranteed payouts will be very telling.

I know its Arena football but the QB is basically the OC/playcaller so he does have some experience in that regard. I am not a fan of the Air Raid but I do like the way Meachem has set up the run game at TCU. I would hope that they could incorporate some of the TE, HB, Pistol formations that Holgerson uses. Based off the QBs we have I hope the have some kind of option attack as well.

24/7 reporting Watson, Robinson and Wickline will no longer be on the staff once the weekend is over.

Keep in mind UT is hosting a number of prospects on December 12th, so ideally the new hires will happen very quickly.

You are right, impossible is the wrong word. I just think if you are a hot coordinator the level of Meachum you can skip the UNT level stepping stone. Another year or two and he'll will have a lot better offers.

and if Meecham isn't going to UNT we should go after him.

I'd rather have Meachum over Cumbie. That being said if Meachum is currently on HC short lists he probably doesn't want to risk that position to come into such an unstable environment.

I think taking a shot on Cumbie is better. Meachum is more proven but gone in a year if successful. Cumbie is probably HC some day to but it's 2-3 years down the road. I think Cumbie would be fine calling plays. I think we're making calling plays a little more challenging than it is guys. He was a QB for one of the better offensive minds in college football.

24/7 saying Doug Meacham is officially out for the North Texas job, but his name is now getting some run for the Memphis opening.

Justin Fuente took the Memphis job after being TCU's offensive coordinator for two seasons.

24/7 reporting that if Sonny Cumbie does not work out for UT, Sterlin Gilbert of Tulsa will get the next call.
