Strong officially targeting Cumbie

Well, I don't know who Will Baizer is, but he just created a thread confirming Cumbie was at CHHS recruiting for TCU today. Patterson was with him.

Wonder who the CHHS recruit is.

I'd bet that Strong and co have already contacted guys like Buechele to personally let him know there will be changes. I'd bet Watson had contact with him too. The key guys that are the ones recruiting for you.....you gotta keep open communication with them. Anyone see the top recruits mom who called Muschamp a liar for the way he handled the transition to USC?

It could be that Cumbie is moving on, but he is going with Patterson to tell their key recruit face to face. Or it could be that he is staying at TCU.

Time is of the essence, but you really have to give the guy at least 72 hours. Which means we need a decision tomorrow or the offer becomes non-commit-able.

Fair point, and clearly everyone who actually has a hand in these hirings and decisions knows way more than the rest of us. But, simply based on what those of us out of that loop know, it would makes sense to hope that A) there's either already a decision that's been made but that they don't want to announce yet, or B) there's a set timeline, and C) if there's a still a question as to whether Cumbie is going to take the job, that things are all set to move on Gilbert.

This clearly could just all be part of the process, but as people who can only speculate, it's easy to get antsy. But there's some truth to the idea that, if this is just being drawn out from Cumbie's side (and Strong doesn't have an answer yet)... that DOES kind of work against Texas in recruiting right now.

cumbia asking for unlimited perms ?

Seems to be some buzz that Jinks (who was supposedly going to be part of the Cumbie-linked position hires I think?) will be the head coach at Bowling Green...? Not sure what that says about everything else going on...

Source tells us Gary Patterson said Cumbie is "torn." This was followed up with "He's [Patterson] certainly given Cumbie his blessing to leave if he thinks it's right for him."

Same source also clarified the "head coach in waiting" rumor as "absolutely false - "Patterson has at least a decade left most likely."

We were told it ultimately comes down to whether or not Cumbie thinks Strong is going to be around for a while & does Texas have the players to run his system, or will it take 2 years to recruit them all?

Bowling Green hires Mike Jinks to replace Dino Babers. Does that clear the way for Brian Ward to come to Cuse as DC? http://ow.ly/VDZ68

Bowling Green hires Texas Tech assistant Mike Jinks to replace Dino Babers as head coach

By Nate Mink @MinkNate

Bowling Green moved quickly to replace Dino Babers, hiring Texas Tech assistant Mike Jinks as its new football coach, it was announced Tuesday night.

Can confirm not reported yet Cumbie is staying in Fort Worth. it will be announced officially by tomorrow.

I suppose I will be more credible when it's reported. It has been decided. Staying put.

You won't be credible whether it happens or not. From where I sit you have a 50/50 chance of being right, and it wouldn't be shocking either way. But popping up on a message board and having that be your first post ever is closer to a 90% chance of you just being here to troll.

From tcu 247....they seemed concerned and some assistant names are getting tossed out there.

Mobile-friendly - 19 mins ago - Is there serious concern that Curtis Luper would go with Sonny Cumbie if he takes the UT job? If so, this can't be good.

Why don't you make another account that reports 'He decided yesterday, but it took some time to hammer out the last few details and it will all be confirmed tomorrow'. Then one of the accounts will be correct and you can just drop the other.

I think the last paragraph is the legitimate concern for potential OC's being sought by UT. If they take the job and don't achieve 8 wins+ the first year then they will potentially be canned along with Strong. As I mentioned earlier it may be an easier decision if UT's QB position was more stable imo.

9pm update: three of my sources are all saying there is a slight setback in $#@!bie coming to austin. as far as the nuts and bolts of football coaching and him coming to austin, it's pretty much a done deal at this point. however, what the folks in austin and fort worth failed to take into account is where mrs. $#@!bie gives birth.

mrs. $#@!bie was all set to give birth at a medical facility in the forth worth area (my sources won't say where), and the $#@!bies, being private people, had not openly discussed this with either the group in austin or fort worth. she was very open to staying in fort worth and then coming to austin after the birth of the child, but $#@!bie understandably was going to be by his wife's side when she gave birth. the folks in austin offered the use of private jets and a helicopter in forth worth to assist $#@!bie in his commute between the facility and austin, which has firmly impressed the $#@!bies.

the setback this evening is that he made it very clear that he was going to work near where his wife gives birth, in case he needs to leave quickly, and that even the use of a private helicopter and jets to get him from austin to fort worth would not be enough.

the folks in austin got together, and are working with three different groups in austin - st. david's, seton medical center, and the wildcard in all of this, the austin area birthing center. st. david's and seton are the natural choice - both are close to campus, seton has the benefit of basically being between campus and west lake, and some university donors have told the $#@!bies that they will have drivers on call 24/7 to get mrs. $#@!bie to the hospital, and to quickly whisk $#@!bie to his wife's side. police escorts can also be provided with 15 minutes notice to ensure a smooth transit to the hospital of her choice.

mrs. $#@!bie is also interested in alternate birthing methods, but the birthing center is located farther away from campus. university donors are willing to make helicopters available, however a suitable landing location is not available near the birthing center, and the $#@!bies have given the university 24 hours to put together a plan to buy a suitable piece of property near the birthing center, on which can be constructed a suitable landing site for two helicopters (one each for both mrs. $#@!bie and her husband). the $#@!bies are taking into consideration a landing site for a helicopter when they chose their house, and the university-supplied realtors have already provided a list of appropriate houses. some of the owners of those houses have already been told that they may have to vacate their their houses with 72 hours notice as well, but they are bound by an NDA and cannot reveal exactly which houses are under consideration.

with all of that said, i think there isn't much to fear at this point, as i consider this to be a done deal - the big donors can definitely resolve the helicopter landing site situation, should mrs. $#@!bie decide on an alternate method of delivery for the future $#@!bie.

Gilbert would be a home run for Aggie.

The rest of those guys wouldn't even answer the phone. Well Sark might if he is out of rehab and currently drunk.

Like all the guys beating down your door to fill the OC job???

Don't know where this report came from, but unless she is in labor for 3 months and those 3 months happen to be from sept to Dec next year, I don't see how this is a big deal. Dude will probably take about 2 weeks off for the baby anyways.

I get the recruiting part of this, but come on, even if we are talking about the month of January, how the heck is the birth of his wife an obstacle in any way shape or form. Hell, he can coach over skype if he needs too.

That update would be one hell of a start to a top ten craziest things an insider said during a coaching search.

Cumbie isn't coming folks.

It makes no sense. Not trying to sound callous but if that's the holdup just move on to Gilbert. We are talking about a few hours down the road, not the other side of the world.

I don't know this whole deal seems to crazy. I don't know about the donors buying a parcel of land just for Cumbie to be whisked away in a helicopter should he need it. It's not like there are just parcels lying around for tge taking at bargain basement prices. If this was tge head coach perhaps but seems like a lot of drama for Cumbie

yea, it seems way too much for a guy that does not call plays. It is nice to get a little excited about this but lets be real, we were all doing cartwheels when harsin was hired, and yes, I know different staff...etc....yada..yada...but cumbie at the most is a ?....is he better than Watson ? hell, a monkey with a clipboard could do a better job, so hopefully we get him but Bedford still is the DC ....the next OC better be able to put up some numbers on every team next year.

***IF*** we miss on Cumbie, I won't be so mad bc we missed on him per say. I'll be more upset we missed on our first choice. It will finally be a wake up call that we have fallen far from our place atop the cfb world. Gilbert is every bit of a rockstar Cumbie is just on a lot smaller of a scale with no spotlight. For those of you who aren't familiar with him this dude he can coach.

Now with that being said, I'm still optimistic because it doesn't take very long to decline an offer and say NO. It's a lot harder and a lot more things to hash out and finalize to accept a job and say YES.

It's ridiculous on both ends. It's ridiculous that we would bend over backwards and that he would even make those requests. I could buy that he asked if he could borrow a plane or helicopter when his baby is born, but not for strategic helicopter pads to be created just in case.
