Texas Recruiting

Well...just looked

2021 - Ohio State had 3 of the top 12
2020 - Clemson had 3 of the top 9 and 4 of the top 21
2019 - Alabama had 4 of the top 17
2018 - Ohio State had 4 of the top 15
2014 - 2017 - was pretty even
2013 - Auburn had 3 of the top 11
2012 - Florida State had 3 of the top 9

Texas A&M this year has 4 of the top 11, 5 of the top 16 and if they get Shemar Turner it will be 5 of the top 11 and 6 of the top 16. Oh yeah, 4 of the top 8.

#damn
I guess you can never have too many of the "big un's".
Wonder if they have a good NIL package. I guess it's now acceptable to I flat out buy the kids.

Eh I wouldn’t classify this as “buying” players If we were “buying” players a dude like Kelvin banks would be making double what any of the other guys got. The 50k is just an added bonus of coming to Texas. Let’s be honest it’s not really that much money. It’s like $4,200 a month. It’s nice, but it ain’t changing any minds

The average American makes $56k/year. $50k plus free room and board for an 18 year old ... I hope they have someone ready to file their tax returns.

Banks is for sure making more than $50k per year lol. I would imagine a 5* recruit like him is getting paid half a million or more. How many other colleges were throwing money at him?

Dont kid yourself.

I really do believe there is something to kids

50K a year at 18 years old is a lot of money. They have housing and food probably paid for so that’s all that much more money in their pockets.

He certainly has the ability to based on NIL rules. Breaking news though guys were always making money

For the recored I understand 50k for an 18 year old kid is good money no question. My point is this NIL deal isn’t changing any minds. All these guys had interest in Texas before. The 50k is just a pot sweetener. It isn’t bringing a guy who wasn’t considering Texas at all and now all the sudden boom here he is.

I don't think Texas' class would have been near this good without NIL money being paid to some of these kids to come here.
I think Cristobol going to Miami and Riley leaving OU did as much or more to help this class than the NIL money did to be honest

In case anyone wasn't aware, the state of Texas has placed no limits or restrictions on NIL funding. Thank goodness we have a legislature that believes in free enterprise for everyone. This is the reason why Texas and Texas A&M are suddenly in the top 5 recruiting rankings. This was a huge consideration for us to make the move to the SEC when we did.

If other states don't loosen their restrictions, Horns and Aggies are going to dominate college football recruiting for the foreseeable future.

I think there will probably have to be restrictions on it in the future. Weather it’s by state law, federal law, or NCAA restrictions. It’s not hard to imagine it getting way out of hand. I’ve long been an advocate for players being able to make money, but it’s not hard to imagine a world where some restrictions are needed.

Not in Texas.

Yes in Texas. I know the state of Texas likes to operate as if it’s immune to everything, but NIL is eventually going to get way out of hand without some universal rules everyone plays by. That might be NCAA regulations, maybe it’s some sort of new sanctioning body that forms, maybe it’s federal law I don’t know. But this will not continue unregulated. Just don’t happen. Even in Texas

Supreme Court has already addressed the issue in case you haven’t heard. Student athlete NIL cannot be restricted universally as the NCAA has been doing for decades. It’s up to the states to regulate if they wish to do so as long as it doesn’t violate the athletes’ right to own their NIL. It ain’t happening in Texas. If anything evolves it will be other states relaxing their restrictions to follow the lead of Texas. Also, student athletes organizing for the right to bargain collectively. Those issues don’t put limits on NIL. It actually expands NIL earning capacity.

I’m reading on several sites that we may be getting a major impact defensive player in the transfer portal. Some kid named Watts from Ohio State.

There is going to be some way to regain it in. Maybe it’s some type of collective bargaining or something similar to that, but it’s not just going to be the Wild West not forever anyway.
I think the Supreme Court opened the door for some other type of governing body for major conference football to work under and they will come up with rules that everyone can live with.

where the NCAA ran a foul of the Supreme Court is they basically said under no circumstances will NIL happen, and I think listening to the justices during arguments that’s where the court was like yeah no. I think if the NCAA had come up with a set of reasonable rules incorporating NIL. They would of faired much better in the Supreme Court

There is no way to limit NIL money. They are contracts with outside entities. You are going to get some smart kids that LLC up and then go out and retain a firm to negotiate endorsement deals on their behalf. You are also going to have booster groups go out and pool money for endorsement deals. The whole thing is legit as long as a kid tweets about a product or service

If collective bargaining for student athletes becomes a thing it will likely be to ensure that all athletes have the same opportunities to earn NIL money. That will make NIL expand not contract. Look for UT’s NIL groups like Horns For Heart to grow exponentially. I won’t be surprised if those groups eventually guarantee a base income to every student athlete on football scholarship.

Any word on why Stewart did not sign yesterday? He re-thinking things or just playing mind games?

Yep, that Watts. I’m pretty sure he’s coming to Texas.
He was a 4 star recruit. Very athletic and was projected to be OSU starter next season. I think Ewers is recruiting him since they were part of the same class. He had two interceptions in very limited playing time this season. He only played about 70 snaps this year. The CB’s ahead of him are both projected to be NFL draft picks which was why he didn’t play more snaps.

I think we should start looking at something besides 4 or 5 Star player, KState showed me that with Vaughn, being from Round Rock, man that was a miss, That was Pop Snyders thing, and they still are doing it, and the Brock Boys , he knocked us down when didn't get them and the 5 Star QB, this guys a crazy guy for sure on building a team...

I think we have taken a good balance of "development guys".

The Westlake DE
Savion Red
The 2 LBs
Kristopher Ross
A Bryant
Xavion Brice

Keep in mind 3 star is the best a kicker can be and we took a LS as well (2 star kid). So 11 3 stars is really 9 3 stars

I do agree with your point, coaches need to trust their own eyes not recruiting/star rankings.

Having said that, the facts are the facts and the teams with the most 4 and 5 Stars tend to win the most games.

@Ketchum does a good job of documenting that every off season.

It’s also important to keep in mind that, on average, maybe only half of a recruiting class actually end up becoming consistent contributors while the rest just never pan out. For this class, all of our 5 stars need to become valuable contributors. Especially Ewers.

I don't think either Casey (rumor is Card is gone) or Maalik is going to hand him the job.

But that does not change the validity of your post.

I think A Bryant is severely underrated. I'm very excited about him. He is now 6-4 300...he can put on another 30 pounds and maintain his speed and explosiveness.

Couple things-- I think this is the wild west period for NIL. It'll slow down. And 2) if we can use another development guy-- that monster from shiner would be a good one. Quick, smart, strong, with quick-twitch. Stick him on special teams for a couple years while he develops, and he could pay off big time. Also probably increases your chances with his 4 star brother.
