Edit: It is a 10 episode series, my apologies: If you have not watched then you are missing a great series.
Excellent time period series with great performances.

Also on Mondays the Chain of Command on Nat Geo concludes with its last episode, great work by National Geographic in cooperation with the military.

Nat Geo will also premiere the Picasso series on April 24 with Antonio Banderas playing Picasso. If you watched Nat Geo's Einstein last year, then you will know the care taken in these series they plan for the next 8-10 years.

I dig The Alienist as a good crime story, but the disgust and dirty feeling sometimes gets too much to finish an episode.

Rampant sexuality between exploited lil boys and despicable grown men gets taxing as hell as much as they show it. Small mutilated corpses don't help either.

So many evil people in that show deserve to be beaten to death on the spot.

Nothing compared to the book. Crazy stuff!

The Alienist is very well cast, imo.

Took me a while to adjust to Dakota Fanning's character so as not to see little Dakota doing the acting. She has done a great job with this show and given us a glimpse into what kind of acting she has in store for us going forward.

Daniel Bruhl is great as well.

Through the first five episodes, I've really enjoyed "The Alienist." The character development of Dr. Kreizler and Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning) has been outstanding, and it has given each of them depth that really lends to the story. And the period details have been an excellent part of it, too. As it is turning out, "The Alienist" is imminently better presented as a 10-part series than a two-hour feature film.

Totally agree on this. Feel like I need to take a shower after watching an episode.

i may have asked you before but did you read his 2nd book, angel of darkness?
I loved the Alienist (read it about 6 months ago), but haven't stared the others. I'm guessing the second was good?

Regarding the show, I like it but don't love it. Initially I felt like everything was over-acted. But now I'm not sure if it's overacting or just acting to fit the period. Production value is great, and I'm surprised at how much they're showing in depicting the child sexualization and violence. It is definitely hard to watch, and crazy to think that people used to have so little regard for children in this way. Ugh...

yor an angel of darkness

do what? i should have you beaten from the board. when i got the alienist, i literally did not put it down until i was done. read straight through the night.

Production values have been great. Way above network TV level. It has been gritty and real. Depicting the boy prostitutes in their dresses and makeup may make some uncomfortable, but it maintains the level of realism the show has established.

i suppose that depicting the world of monsters and serial killers demands that it be graphic ....but that doesn't mean that i have to let all that darkness into my world

i took a peek......el paso

She really won me over last episode. She was the star of that one.

I read the book several years ago and loved it. I have been disappointed in the series though. Acting seems a bit wooden and the person playing Teddie R. is underplaying his role horribly. I don't know how you can make such a dynamic personalty boring but he seems to have done it. Hopefully the pace will pick up for the next 5 episodes.

Just started watching this show on HBO max.

As a sucker for any show or movie set in a historical setting, through 2 episodes so far I am VERY impressed with the production level and quality. All the attentions to details in the set decorations, props, wardrobe, mannerisms used, and even the language used in the script, etc, make you feel like you are legitimately visiting 1896 New York City. In all it's overcrowded streets, horse traffic jams, muck and filth. The number of extras utilized in the street scenes alone crazy to see.

Even when a character opens up an office desk they are rummaging through, I feel the need to pause the TV and check out all of the true to life period props you see getting pushed around. AMAZING details like that don't go unnoticed by a history geek. Which you can tell, were amply used to put this show together.

It seems like it was made at cinematic financing and budget levels, instead of at television production budgets.

And, hell to the Yes for having a young, pre-presidential Teddy Roosevelt as a main character. That's cool too.

Kudos to TNT, for making this great and well made series.
