Texas football coach Tom Herman spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice. Herman was originally slated to have a week away from media interviews, but Texas announced a surprise availability on Monday afternoon.
Here are the highlights of Herman’s press conference:
--- Herman said his team had around 200 game reps on Tuesday, a 12-period practice in spiders. In addition, there was a “thud” scrimmage toward the end of practice, and his young players got some work in.
--- Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger is progressing on schedule, according to Herman. Ehlinger is receiving three treatments a day, his pain is decreasing, while the range of motion is increasing. Herman said Ehlinger’s recovery is on schedule.
--- Herman said Ehlinger is slated to attempt throwing on Thursday and continue treatment throughout this weekend. The goal is to see if Ehlinger can fully participate in practice on Sunday. However, players have Monday off, and Herman is optimistic Ehlinger’s shoulder will be better by October 23 at the latest.
--- Players will be in shorts and shoulder pads on Wednesday. There will be some scout team work, coupled with a little introduction to Oklahoma State. In addition, Herman said there will be a lot of individual work to clear up bad habits that continually show up on game day. Players will wear shorts and helmets on Thursday, but it will be non-contact. Players will have Friday and Saturday off, returning on Sunday.
--- Herman on his players remaining focused during the bye week: “That’s the big emphasis. This is not an off week. You can call it an open week, a bye week, a not playing a game on Saturday week. It’s definitely not an off week. We’re going to get our work in. The old adage of if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. We’ve got a lot of improvements that we need to make, and part of that is getting our bodies back in peak physical condition. We’ve got to make sure that we’re smart with our time on the field. That we’re doing all the things necessary off-the-field to make sure our bodies are right. I think that’s good. We talked about it at practice today that if you’re not of the mindset that you get to go to practice today, rather than you have to go to practice today, do you really love football? Hopefully, most of the team is of the mindset that, ‘When’s practice? I got to get this, this and this better because I’m not a finished product yet. I’m not a complete player yet. I get to get this better so I can help my team get better.’ I think that attitude has permeated most of the locker room.”
--- Herman said he was in Dallas recruiting on Monday. He intends to attend more than one game on Thursday night in Houston, and will spend most of Friday in that area. The entire staff left campus to recruit on Monday. Herman said the coordinators will remain in Austin for practice on Thursday. However, his other assistants will be on the road Thursday and Friday, and a few will make the rounds on Saturday.
