Texas football coach Tom Herman held a press conference on Wednesday to discuss the players who finalized their commitment during this early signing period. Jason Suchomel outlined every topic Herman discussed during his media session.
However, two things stood out to me that I thought were worth a separate post.
First, Herman took the time to thank his players for their recruiting help this year. I asked Herman about his recruiting success in Texas after seeing so many top players leave the state last year. Herman said he did not believe the staff did anything super human, and said he grew up in a world where that was supposed to happen.
During Herman’s answer, he shifted gears and praised his players.
“I will tell you this,” Herman said. “One group of people I didn’t thank, and I should have in my opening deal, and I hope everybody is listening. I want to thank our players. Our players are unbelievable recruiters for us. They’re unbelievable recruiters for us. It is my job, it is our assistant coaches job, it is everybody’s job at the University of Texas, when a recruit is around to make sure the best of the best is shown to that recruit. When you get around our players, and this is true in any program, when you talk to the players, they are going to tell you the truth. They’re going to tell you the truth as a recruit and as a parent.
“Our players were off the charts in terms of their glowing remarks of our program with these recruits. I think what you saw, too, is a group of kids that, especially even the young ones, the 31st ranked recruiting class in the country, they understand they’re not going to achieve the things that they want to achieve individually if they don’t have great players around them, so, they really got into recruiting. Coach, do we have the number one class yet? Is it number one yet? That's our players. That's our current players. We’re bringing basically, essentially, kids in to try to take their jobs in most cases, but they know the only way for them to achieve the results they want on the field is if they have great players around them. I can’t thank them enough.”
In addition, Herman thanked Natalia Vaughns (mUTha hustla on Twitter), Byron Hobbs-Vaughns, for her recruiting help. He called her the Queen of Twitter.
Herman also thanked B.J. Foster’s mom, along with the parents of Connor Williams, Malik Jefferson and Malcolm Roach. Herman said he probably left a lot of names out. However, he praised their efforts.
